Parts per Million Detection of Alcohol Vapors via Metal Organic Framework Functionalized Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors

ZIF-8-Based Surface Plasmon Resonance and Fabry-Pérot Sensors for Volatile Organic Compounds

This work explores the use of ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework (MOF) material, for its use in the optical detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Fabry-Pérot and surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based sensors. The experiments have been carried out with ethanol (EtOH) and show response times as low as 30 s under VOC-saturated atmospheres, and the estimated limit of detection is below 4000 ppm for both sensor types. The selectivity towards other VOCs is relatively poor, although the dynamics of adsorption/desorption differ for each VOC and could be used for selectivity purposes. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of ZIF-8 has been confirmed and the fabricated sensors are insensitive to this compound, which is a very attractive result for its practical use in gas sensing devices.

FO-SPR Model for Full-Spectrum Signal Analysis of Back-reflecting FO-SPR Sensors to Monitor MOF Deposition

In this study, we explore the full-spectrum capabilities of fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (FO-SPR) for analyzing heterogeneous samples with increased comprehensiveness. Our approach involves refining a literature-derived FO-SPR model to more precisely reflect experimental data obtained using a back-reflecting sensor configuration. Key enhancements in our model include adjustments to the thickness and permittivity of the gold SPR-active layer on the FO-SPR sensor as well as improvements to the angular distribution of light within the system. We apply this optimized model to the investigation of the deposition process of a metal-organic framework (MOF), specifically ZIF-8, using FO-SPR. By closely examining the temporal variations in the FO-SPR signal during MOF layer formation, we simultaneously determine the evolving thickness and refractive index (RI) of the MOF layer, offering a dual-parameter analysis. Our results demonstrate that a full-spectrum analysis of the FO-SPR signal can extract critical information from samples exhibiting radial heterogeneity. This advancement significantly enhances the quantitative assessment of various phenomena that alter the refractive index in the sensor's domain, such as adsorption and binding processes. This work thus represents a significant step forward in the field of FO-SPR sensor technology, promising broad applications in areas requiring the precise detection and analysis of complex samples.

Tuning the optical properties of the metal-organic framework UiO-66 via ligand functionalization

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising class of materials for optical applications, especially due to their modular design which allows fine-tuning of the relevant properties. The present theoretical study examines the Zr-based UiO-66-MOF and derivatives of it with respect to their optical properties. Starting from the well-known monofunctional amino- and nitro-functionalized UiO-66 derivatives, we introduce novel UiO-66-type MOFs containing bifunctional push-pull 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) linkers. The successful synthesis of such a novel UiO-66 derivative is also reported. It was carried out using a para-nitroaniline (PNA)-based bdc-analogue linker. Applying density functional theory (DFT), suitable models for all UiO-66-MOF analogues were generated by assessing different exchange-correlation functionals. Afterwards, HSE06 hybrid functional calculations were performed to obtain the electronic structures and optical properties. The detailed HSE06 electronic structure calculations were validated with UV-Vis measurements to ensure reliable results. Finally, the refractive index dispersion of the seven UiO-66-type materials is compared, showing the possibility to tailor the optical properties by the use of functionalized linker molecules. Specifically, the refractive index can be varied over a wide range from 1.37 to 1.78.

Recent progress on MOF-based optical sensors for VOC sensing

The raising apprehension of volatile organic compound (VOC) exposures urges the exploration of advanced monitoring platforms. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide many attractive features including tailorable porosity, high surface areas, good chemical/thermal stability, and various host-guest interactions, making them appealing candidates for VOC capture and sensing. To comprehensively exploit the potential of MOFs as sensing materials, great efforts have been dedicated to the shaping and patterning of MOFs for next-level device integration. Among different types of sensors (chemiresistive sensors, gravimetric sensors, optical sensors, etc.), MOFs coupled with optical sensors feature distinctive strength. This review summarized the latest advancements in MOF-based optical sensors with a particular focus on VOC sensing. The subject is discussed by different mechanisms: colorimetry, luminescence, and sensors based on optical index modulations. Critical analysis for each system highlighting practical aspects was also deliberated.

Design of an Artificial Opal/Photonic Crystal Interface for Alcohol Intoxication Assessment: Capillary Condensation in Pores and Photonic Materials Work Together

Alcohol intoxication has a dangerous effect on human health and is often associated with a risk of catastrophic injuries and alcohol-related crimes. A demand to address this problem adheres to the design of new sensor systems for the real-time monitoring of exhaled breath. We introduce a new sensor system based on a porous hydrophilic layer of submicron silica particles (SiO₂ SMPs) placed on a one-dimensional photonic crystal made of Ta₂O₅/SiO₂ dielectric layers whose operation relies on detecting changes in the position of surface wave resonance during capillary condensation in pores. To make the active layer of SiO₂ SMPs, we examine the influence of electrostatic interactions of media, particles, and the surface of the crystal influenced by buoyancy, gravity force, and Stokes drag force in the frame of the dip-coating preparation method. We evaluate the sensing performance toward biomarkers such as acetone, ammonia, ethanol, and isopropanol and test sensor system capabilities for alcohol intoxication assessment. We have found this sensor to respond to all tested analytes in a broad range of concentrations. By processing the sensor signals by principal component analysis, we selectively determined the analytes. We demonstrated the excellent performance of our device for alcohol intoxication assessment in real-time.

Real-Time Monitoring of Gas-Phase and Dissolved CO2 Using a Mixed-Matrix Composite Integrated Fiber Optic Sensor for Carbon Storage Application

Novel chemical sensors that improve detection and quantification of CO₂ are critical to ensuring safe and cost-effective monitoring of carbon storage sites. Fiber optic (FO)-based chemical sensor systems are promising field-deployable systems for real-time monitoring of CO₂ in geological formations for long-range distributed sensing. In this work, a mixed-matrix composite integrated FO sensor system was developed with a purely optical readout that reliably operates as a detector for gas-phase and dissolved CO₂. A mixed-matrix composite sensor coating consisting of plasmonic nanocrystals and hydrophobic zeolite embedded in a polymer matrix was integrated on the FO sensor. The mixed-matrix composite FO sensor showed excellent reversibility/stability in a high humidity environment and sensitivity to gas-phase CO₂ over a large concentration range. This remarkable sensing performance was enabled by using plasmonic nanocrystals to significantly enhance the sensitivity and a hydrophobic zeolite to effectively mitigate interference from water vapor. The sensor exhibited the ability to sense CO₂ in the presence of other geologically relevant gases, which is of importance for applications in geological formations. A prototype FO sensor configuration, which possesses a robust sensing capability for monitoring dissolved CO₂ in natural water, was demonstrated. Reproducibility was confirmed over many cycles, both in a laboratory setting and in the field. More importantly, we demonstrated on-line monitoring capabilities with a wireless telemetry system, which transferred the data from the field to a website. The combination of outstanding CO₂ sensing properties and facile coating processability makes this mixed-matrix composite FO sensor a good candidate for practical carbon storage applications.

VOC Mixture Sensing with a MOF Film Sensor Array: Detection and Discrimination of Xylene Isomers and Their Ternary Blends

Detection and recognition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are crucial in many applications. While pure VOCs can be detected by various sensors, the discrimination of VOCs in mixtures, especially of similar molecules, is hindered by cross-sensitivities. Isomer identification in mixtures is even harder. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with their well-defined, nanoporous, and versatile structures have the potential to improve the VOC sensing performance by tailoring the adsorption affinities. Here, we detect and identify ternary xylene isomer mixtures by using an array of six gravimetric, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based sensors coated with selected MOF films with different isomer affinities. We use classical molecular simulations to provide insights into the sensing mechanism. In addition to the attractive interaction between the analytes and the MOF film, the isomer discrimination is caused by the rigid crystalline framework sterically controlling the access of the isomers to different adsorption sites in the MOFs. The sensor array has a very low limit of detection of 1 ppm for each pure isomer and allows the isomer discrimination in mixtures. At 100 ppm, 16 different ternary o-p-m-xylene mixtures were identified with high classification accuracy (96.5%). This work shows the unprecedented performance of MOF-sensor arrays, also referred to as MOF-electronic nose (MOF-e-nose), for sensing VOC mixtures. Based on the study, guidelines for detecting and discriminating complex mixtures of volatile molecules are also provided.

Label-Free Fluorescent Nanofilm Sensor Based on Surface Plasmon Coupled Emission: In Situ Monitoring the Growth of Metal-Organic Frameworks

We have proposed a universal label-free fluorescent nanofilm sensor based on surface plasmon coupled emission (SPCE). A metal-dye-dielectric (MDD) structure was fabricated to mediate the label-free monitoring based on SPCE. The nonfluorescent dielectric film smartly borrowed the fluorescence signal from the bottom dye layer and led to a new SPCE response through the adjacent metal film. The fluorescence emission angle and polarization strongly depended on the thickness of the nonfluorescent dielectric film on the MDD structure. As a demonstration, the growth of a two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework film (ZIF-L) was in situ monitored in the liquid phase by MDD-SPCE for the first time. The label-free fluorescent sensors are facilely prepared by a spin coating technique, with the potential to be widely spread for in situ studies, especially toward nanomaterial growth processes.

Metal-Organic Framework Based Gas Sensors

The ever-increasing concerns over indoor/outdoor air quality, industrial gas leakage, food freshness, and medical diagnosis require miniaturized gas sensors with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, stability, low power consumption, cost-effectiveness, and long lifetime. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring structural diversity, large specific surface area, controllable pore size/geometry, and host-guest interactions, hold great promises for fabricating various MOF-based devices for diverse applications including gas sensing. Tremendous progress has been made in the past decade on the fabrication of MOF-based sensors with elevated sensitivity and selectivity toward various analytes due to their preconcentrating and molecule-sieving effects. Although several reviews have recently summarized different aspects of this field, a comprehensive review focusing on MOF-based gas sensors is absent. In this review, the latest advance of MOF-based gas sensors relying on different transduction mechanisms, for example, chemiresistive, capacitive/impedimetric, field-effect transistor or Kelvin probe-based, mass-sensitive, and optical ones are comprehensively summarized. The latest progress for making large-area MOF films essential to the mass-production of relevant gas sensors is also included. The structural and compositional features of MOFs are intentionally correlated with the sensing performance. Challenges and opportunities for the further development and practical applications of MOF-based gas sensors are also given.

Self-Assembly of Silver Clusters into One- and Two-Dimensional Structures and Highly Selective Methanol Sensing

The development of new materials for the design of sensitive and responsive sensors has become a crucial research direction. Here, two silver cluster-based polymers (Ag-CBPs), including one-dimensional {[Ag 22 (L1) 8 (CF 3 CO 2 ) 14 ](CH 3 OH) 2 } n chain and two-dimensional {[Ag 12 (L2) 2 (CO 2 CF 3 ) 14 (H 2 O) 4 (AgCO 2 CF 3 ) 4 ](HNEt 3 ) 2 } n film, are designed and used to simulate the human nose, an elegant sensor to smells, to distinguish organic solvents. We study the relationship between the atomic structures of Ag-CBPs determined by x-ray diffraction and the electrical properties in the presence of organic solvents (e.g., methanol and ethanol). The ligands, cations, and the ligated solvent molecules not only play an important role in the self-assembly process of Ag-CBP materials but also determine their physiochemical properties such as the sensing functionality.

Large refractive index changes in ZIF-8 thin films of optical quality

The refractive index (RI) of ZIF-8 thin films with optical quality was determined over the whole visible spectrum. The RI can be fine-tuned over a wide range by loading with different organic guest molecules for various optical applications.

An Overview of Artificial Olfaction Systems with a Focus on Surface Plasmon Resonance for the Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds

The last three decades have witnessed an increasing demand for novel analytical tools for the analysis of gases including odorants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in various domains. Traditional techniques such as gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, although very efficient, present several drawbacks. Such a context has incited the research and industrial communities to work on the development of alternative technologies such as artificial olfaction systems, including gas sensors, olfactory biosensors and electronic noses (eNs). A wide variety of these systems have been designed using chemiresistive, electrochemical, acoustic or optical transducers. Among optical transduction systems, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been extensively studied thanks to its attractive features (high sensitivity, label free, real-time measurements). In this paper, we present an overview of the advances in the development of artificial olfaction systems with a focus on their development based on propagating SPR with different coupling configurations, including prism coupler, wave guide, and grating.

A donor-π-acceptor aggregation-induced emission compound serving as a portable fluorescent sensor for detection and differentiation of methanol and ethanol in the gas phase

The design strategy of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophores with donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) conjugation structure has greatly contributed to the development of luminescent materials and devices, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensors. In this work, a D-π-A fluorophore DEBAB was synthesized, showing both AIE and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties as confirmed by spectroscopic data and quantum chemical calculations. Furthermore, there is notable emission-enhancement when DEBAB is exposed to small-molecule alcohols, such as methanol and ethanol. Based on this phenomenon, a portable film sensor was fabricated, capable of detecting methanol and ethanol in gas phase, with detection limit (DL) as low as 8.02 ppm. Our systematic investigation suggests that hydrogen-bonding may be formed between DEBAB and alcohols, intensifying the AIE efficacy while influencing the ICT process. This working mechanism is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations including electrostatic potential mapping and molecular total energy. In addition, a sensor array was fabricated on a cellulose paper strip, showing different levels of emission changing in response to alcohols. Thus the detection and differentiation of methanol and ethanol are enabled.

State of the Art in Alcohol Sensing with 2D Materials

Since the discovery of graphene, the star among new materials, there has been a surge of attention focused on the monatomic and monomolecular sheets which can be obtained by exfoliation of layered compounds. Such materials are known as two-dimensional (2D) materials and offer enormous versatility and potential. The ultimate single atom, or molecule, thickness of the 2D materials sheets provides the highest surface to weight ratio of all the nanomaterials, which opens the door to the design of more sensitive and reliable chemical sensors. The variety of properties and the possibility of tuning the chemical and surface properties of the 2D materials increase their potential as selective sensors, targeting chemical species that were previously difficult to detect. The planar structure and the mechanical flexibility of the sheets allow new sensor designs and put 2D materials at the forefront of all the candidates for wearable applications. When developing sensors for alcohol, the response time is an essential factor for many industrial and forensic applications, particularly when it comes to hand-held devices. Here, we review recent developments in the applications of 2D materials in sensing alcohols along with a study on parameters that affect the sensing capabilities. The review also discusses the strategies used to develop the sensor along with their mechanisms of sensing and provides a critique of the current limitations of 2D materials-based alcohol sensors and an outlook for the future research required to overcome the challenges.

Balancing Noncovalent Interactions in the Self-Assembly of Nonplanar Aromatic Carboxylic Acid MOF Linkers at the Solution/Solid Interface: HOPG vs Au(111)

This study explores directed noncovalent bonding in the self-assembly of nonplanar aromatic carboxylic acids on gold and graphite surfaces. It is the first step in developing a new design strategy to create two-dimensional surface metal-organic frameworks (SURFMOFs). The acid molecules used are tetraphenylethene-based and are typically employed in the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) MOF crystalline solids. They include tetraphenylethene tetracarboxylic acid, tetraphenylethene bisphenyl carboxylic acid, and tetraphenylethene tetrakis-phenyl carboxylic acid. The two-dimensional structures formed from these molecules on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and Au(111) are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy in a solution environment. The process of monolayer formation and final surface linker structures are found to be strongly dependent on the combination of the molecule and substrate used and are discussed in terms of intermolecular and molecule-substrate interactions, bonding geometry, and symmetry of the acid molecules. In the case of linker self-assembly on HOPG, the molecule-substrate interactions play a significant role in the resulting surface structure. When the acid molecules are adsorbed on Au(111), the intermolecular interactions tend to dominate over the weaker molecule-substrate bonding. Additionally, the interplay of π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding that directs the surface self-assembly on different supports can be modified by varying the linker concentration. This is particularly applicable for the case of the acid molecules adsorbing on the Au(111) substrate. Precise control over predesigned surface structures and orientation of the nonplanar aromatic carboxylic linkers open up an exciting prospect for manipulating the direction of SURFMOF growth in two dimensions and potentially in 3D.

Nanoporous MIL-101(Cr) as a sensing layer coated on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) nanosensor to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

The application of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as a sensing layer has been attracting great interest over the last decade, due to their high porosity and tunability, which provides a large surface area and active sites for trapping or binding target molecules. MIL-101(Cr) is selected as a good candidate from the MOFs family to fabricate a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) nanosensor for the detection of volatile organic compound (VOC) vapors. The structural and chemical properties of synthesized MIL-101(Cr) are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and so on. A stable and uniform layer of MOF is coated onto the surface of a QCM sensor by the drop casting method. The frequency of the QCM crystal is changed during exposure to different concentrations of target gas molecules. Here, the sensor response to some VOCs with different functional groups and polarities, such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, n-hexane, acetone, dichloromethane, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and pyridine under N₂ atmosphere at ambient conditions is studied. Sensing properties such as sensitivity, reversibility, stability, response time, recovery time, and limit of detection (LOD) of the sensor are investigated. The best sensor response is observed for pyridine detection with sensitivity of 2.793 Hz ppm⁻¹. The sensor shows short response/recovery time (less than two minutes), complete reversibility and repeatability which are attributed to the physisorption of the gases into the MOF pores and high stability of the device.

Metal–organic frameworks can be used as sensing layer in QCM fabrication because of their huge surface area.

Plasmonic nose: integrating the MOF-enabled molecular preconcentration effect with a plasmonic array for recognition of molecular-level volatile organic compounds

Timely detection of toxic vapor is vital for safeguarding people's lives. Herein, we design a plasmonic nose based on a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-encapsulated Ag nanocube array for ultratrace recognition of VOC vapor. The plasmonic nose enables in situ adsorption kinetics and recognition of various VOCs at ppm levels, eliminating false positives. Our approach provides a paradigm shift to next-generation, effective and specific gas sensors.
