Recent advances in continuous flow synthesis of metal-organic frameworks and their composites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their exceptional properties and diverse applications across various fields. The conventional batch synthesis methods for MOFs and their composites often suffer from challenges such as long reaction times, poor reproducibility, and limited scalability. Continuous flow synthesis has emerged as a promising alternative for overcoming these limitations. In this short review, we discuss the recent advancements, challenges, and future perspectives of continuous flow synthesis in the context of MOFs and their composites. The review delves into a brief overview of the fundamental principles of flow synthesis, highlighting its advantages over batch methods. Key benefits, including precise control over reaction parameters, improved scalability and efficiency, rapid optimization capabilities, enhanced reaction kinetics and mass transfer, and increased safety and environmental sustainability, are addressed. Additionally, the versatility and flexibility of flow synthesis techniques are discussed. The article then explores various flow synthesis methods applicable to MOF and MOF composite production. The techniques covered include continuous flow solvothermal synthesis, mechanochemical synthesis, microwave and ultrasound-assisted flow synthesis, microfluidic droplet synthesis, and aerosol synthesis. Notably, the combination of flow chemistry and aerosol synthesis with real-time characterization is also addressed. Furthermore, the impact of flow synthesis on the properties and performance of MOFs is explored. Finally, the review discusses current challenges and future perspectives in the field of continuous flow MOF synthesis, paving the way for further development and broader application of this promising technique.

Microfluidic-Aerosol Hyphenated Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Hybrid Catalysts for CO2 Utilization

A new and efficient technique is developed by combining the hyphenated microfluidic- and aerosol-based synthesis with the coupled differential mobility analysis for the effective and continuous synthesis and simultaneous analysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived hybrid nanostructured products. HKUST-1, a copper-based MOF, is chosen as the representative to fabricate Cu-based hybrid catalysts for reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction, an effective route for CO2 utilization. The effect of precursor concentration and carrier selection on the properties of the resulting products, including mobility size distribution, crystallization degree, surface area, and metal dispersion are investigated, as well as the correlation between the material properties of the synthesized catalysts and their catalytic performance in RWGS reaction in terms of conversion ratio/rate, selectivity, and operational stability. The results indicate that the continuous microfluidic droplet system can successfully synthesize MOF colloids, followed by the continuous production of MOF-derived hybrid materials through the tandem aerosol spray-drying-reaction system. High catalytic activity and low initiate temperature toward RWGS (turnover frequency = 0.0074 s-1; 450 °C) are achievable. The work facilitates the production and the designed concept of relevant MOF-derived hybrid nanostructured catalysts in the continuous synthesis system and the enhancement of applications in CO2 capture and utilization.

Recent Advances in Two-Dimensional MXene-Based Electrochemical Biosensors for Sweat Analysis

Sweat, a biofluid secreted naturally from the eccrine glands of the human body, is rich in several electrolytes, metabolites, biomolecules, and even xenobiotics that enter the body through other means. Recent studies indicate a high correlation between the analytes' concentrations in the sweat and the blood, opening up sweat as a medium for disease diagnosis and other general health monitoring applications. However, low concentration of analytes in sweat is a significant limitation, requiring high-performing sensors for this application. Electrochemical sensors, due to their high sensitivity, low cost, and miniaturization, play a crucial role in realizing the potential of sweat as a key sensing medium. MXenes, recently developed anisotropic two-dimensional atomic-layered nanomaterials composed of early transition metal carbides or nitrides, are currently being explored as a material of choice for electrochemical sensors. Their large surface area, tunable electrical properties, excellent mechanical strength, good dispersibility, and biocompatibility make them attractive for bio-electrochemical sensing platforms. This review presents the recent progress made in MXene-based bio-electrochemical sensors such as wearable, implantable, and microfluidic sensors and their applications in disease diagnosis and developing point-of-care sensing platforms. Finally, the paper discusses the challenges and limitations of MXenes as a material of choice in bio-electrochemical sensors and future perspectives on this exciting material for sweat-sensing applications.

Real-Time Quantifying Microdroplet Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework Colloids Using Gas-Phase Electrophoresis

A hyphenated electrospray-differential mobility analysis (ES-DMA) was developed for providing a high-resolution, real-time quantitative analysis on the metal-organic framework (MOF) colloids produced via the concept of microfluidic flow chemistry. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 was chosen as the representative MOF of the study. The results show that the physical size and number concentration of the MOF colloid were successfully characterized by the hyphenated ES-DMA during the microdroplet synthetic process, with 3 nm and 4% of measurement uncertainties, respectively. The effects of the synthetic temperature and the molar ratio of the organic linker to metal precursor were investigated, providing an opportunity for accurate control on the particle size (100-200 nm) of the microdroplet-synthesized MOF. The work demonstrates a powerful approach for the real-time quality assurance and material optimization in microdroplet synthesis of colloidal MOFs.

Rapid growth of MXene-based membranes for sustainable environmental pollution remediation

Water consumption has grown in recent years due to rising urbanization and industry. As a result, global water stocks are steadily depleting. As a result, it is critical to seek strategies for removing harmful elements from wastewater once it has been cleaned. In recent years, many studies have been conducted to develop new materials and innovative pathways for water purification and environmental remediation. Due to low energy consumption, low operating cost, and integrated facilities, membrane separation has gained significant attention as a potential technique for water treatment. In these directions, MXene which is the advanced 2D material has been explored and many applications were reported. However, research on MXene-based membranes is still in its early stages and reported applications are scatter. This review provides a broad overview of MXenes and their perspectives, including their synthesis, surface chemistry, interlayer tuning, membrane construction, and uses for water purification. Application of MXene based membrane for extracting pollutants such as heavy metals, organic contaminants, and radionuclides from the aqueous water bodies were briefly discussed. Furthermore, the performance of MXene-based separation membranes is compared to that of other nano-based membranes, and outcomes are very promising. In order to shed more light on the advancement of MXene-based membranes and their operational separation applications, significant advances in the fabrication of MXene-based membranes is also encapsulated. Finally, future prospects of MXene-based materials for diverse applications were discussed.

Analytical methods to determine and sense heavy metal pollutants using MXene and MXene-based composites: Mechanistic prophecy into sensing properties

The presence of heavy metal ions in the biosphere is of grave concern, as these are toxic and impact living organisms. Lack of pure drinking water can spread waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, typhoid, etc. The presence of heavy metals like arsenic and radioactive materials can cause cancer. The detection and removal of these heavy metals are important for sustaining life. Herein, MXene comes to the rescue as a crucial and potential material, which can sense and adsorb heavy metal ions. Developed in 2011, MXenes are an emerging class of 2D nanomaterials that are appropriate substitutes for existing heavy metal ions sensing materials and have shown excellent efficiency due to their better hydrophilicity, capacity of transportation of electrons, functionalization, and a great variety in compositions as compared to the other nanomaterials properties. This work gives an insight into the chemistry and synthesis of MXenes for further utilization as a sensor in heavy metal ions toxicity and underlines the key future challenges to knowing the full prospective of MXenes in environmental systems.

Graphene Oxide of Extra High Oxidation: A Wafer for Loading Guest Molecules

We present a new modification of graphene oxide with very high content (85 wt %) of oxygen-containing functional groups (hydroxy, epoxy, lactol, carboxyl, and carbonyl groups) that forms stable aqueous dispersion in up to 9 g·L^-1 concentration solutions. A novel faster method of the synthesis is described that produces up to 1 kg of the material and allows controlling the particle size in solution. The synthesized compound was characterized by various physicochemical methods and molecular dynamics modeling, revealing a unique structure in the form of a multilayered wafer of several sheets thick, where each sheet is highly corrugated. The ragged structure of the sheets forms pockets with hindered mobility of water that leads to the possibility of trapping guest molecules.

Functionalization of Graphene Oxide with Porphyrins: Synthetic Routes and Biological Applications

Among the available carbon nanomaterials, graphene oxide (GO) has been widely studied because of the possibility of anchoring different chemical species for a large number of applications, including those requiring water-compatible systems. This Review summarizes the state-of-the-art of synthetic routes used to functionalize GO, such as those involving multiple covalent and non-covalent bonds to organic molecules, functionalization with nanoparticles and doping. As a recent development in this field, special focus is given to the formation of nanocomposites comprising GO and porphyrins, and their characterization through spectroscopic techniques (such as UV-Vis, fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy), among others. The potential of such hybrid systems in targeted biological applications is also discussed, namely for cancer therapies relying on photodynamic and photothermal therapies and for the inhibition of telomerase enzyme. Lastly, some promising alternative materials to GO are presented to overcome current challenges of GO-based research and to inspire future research directions in this field.

MXenes-Based Bioanalytical Sensors: Design, Characterization, and Applications

MXenes are recently developed 2D layered nanomaterials that provide unique capabilities for bioanalytical applications. These include high metallic conductivity, large surface area, hydrophilicity, high ion transport properties, low diffusion barrier, biocompatibility, and ease of surface functionalization. MXenes are composed of transition metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides and have a general formula Mn+1Xn, where M is an early transition metal while X is carbon and/or nitrogen. Due to their unique features, MXenes have attracted significant attention in fields such as clean energy production, electronics, fuel cells, supercapacitors, and catalysis. Their composition and layered structure make MXenes attractive for biosensing applications. The high conductivity allows these materials to be used in the design of electrochemical biosensors and the multilayered configuration makes them an efficient immobilization matrix for the retention of activity of the immobilized biomolecules. These properties are applicable to many biosensing systems and applications. This review describes the progress made on the use and application of MXenes in the development of electrochemical and optical biosensors and highlights future needs and opportunities in this field. In particular, opportunities for developing wearable sensors and systems with integrated biomolecule recognition are highlighted.

Carbon based nanomaterials for tissue engineering of bone: Building new bone on small black scaffolds: A review

Tissue engineering is a rapidly-growing approach to replace and repair damaged and defective tissues in the human body. Every year, a large number of people require bone replacements for skeletal defects caused by accident or disease that cannot heal on their own. In the last decades, tissue engineering of bone has attracted much attention from biomedical scientists in academic and commercial laboratories. A vast range of biocompatible advanced materials has been used to form scaffolds upon which new bone can form. Carbon nanomaterial-based scaffolds are a key example, with the advantages of being biologically compatible, mechanically stable, and commercially available. They show remarkable ability to affect bone tissue regeneration, efficient cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. Basically, scaffolds are templates for growth, proliferation, regeneration, adhesion, and differentiation processes of bone stem cells that play a truly critical role in bone tissue engineering. The appropriate scaffold should supply a microenvironment for bone cells that is most similar to natural bone in the human body. A variety of carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerenes, carbon dots (CDs), nanodiamonds and their derivatives that are able to act as scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, are covered in this review. Broadly, the ability of the family of carbon nanomaterial-based scaffolds and their critical role in bone tissue engineering research are discussed. The significant stimulating effects on cell growth, low cytotoxicity, efficient nutrient delivery in the scaffold microenvironment, suitable functionalized chemical structures to facilitate cell-cell communication, and improvement in cell spreading are the main advantages of carbon nanomaterial-based scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.
