Abstract
BACKGROUND Fluoride (F-), an anion with the smallest ionic radius and highest charge density, plays an important role in biomedical and environmental processes, making the development of accurate F- detection methods of great importance. Fluorometric methods with simplicity and sensitivity have gained considerable attention in F- detection. However, their accuracy faces challenges due to issues like autofluorescence interference during real-time light excitation and limited selectivity. Therefore, it is important to establish a simple, real-time light excitation-free, and highly selective method for the accurate determination of F- in complicated samples. RESULTS Herein, a novel phosphorescent approach is developed for the selective and accurate detection of F- in complex samples. Phosphorescence emission CDs@SiO2 is fabricated by confining CDs in a silica protective layer. This design retains the favorable water solubility of silica while benefitting from its inertness, making it resistant to most substances. Furthermore, phosphorescent analysis without real-time light excitation eliminates autofluorescence interference, significantly improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and simplifying sample pretreatment. The specific interaction between F- and the Si-O bond can lead to the degradation of the silica protective layer, exposing the CDs to the solution, resulting in phosphorescence quenching, achieving the highly accurate and sensitive detection of F- with a linear range of 0.001-4 mM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 μM. SIGNIFICANCE This novel F- phosphorescence method based on the metal-free phosphorescent nanomaterial CDs@SiO2 integrates the benefits of no autofluorescence interference, high selectivity, and full aqueous compatibility, and its combination with a smartphone provides a simple, portable, and cost-effective detection platform for accurate and highly sensitive determination of F- in complex samples.

Abstract
Fluoride ion is a strong Lewis base and one of the essential trace elements in human body. It plays a very important role in human health and ecological balance. The deficiency or excessive intake of fluoride ions will cause serious health problems, so the development of a sensitive and accurate detection method for fluoride ions is very important. The colorimetric and/or fluorescence sensing method has been a long standing attractive technique with high sensitivity and fast response. To date, most reported probes for fluoride ion are applicable only in organic solvents or organic-containing aqueous solutions. However, the probes for fluoride ion used in aqueous solution are more practically needed in view of environment protection and human health. In this paper, the materials and designing ideas of the colorimetric and/or fluorescent probes for fluoride ion based on different detection mechanisms in recent years were reviewed. Two main categories including formation of hydrogen bonds and formation of coordination covalent bonds were discussed. The latter one is further subdivided into three types, formation of B-F bond, formation of Si-F bond and formation of Mn+-F bond.

Abstract
Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), a typical kind of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) with aryl groups, has been recognized as an emerging contaminant that causes environmental and health hazards. It is a pervasive threat that can be frequently detected in the environment and living organisms. Hence, establishing an efficient analytical method for TPHP is an urgent issue. In this work, a heteropolyacid (HPA)-luminol chemiluminescence strategy coupled with UV-assisted persulfate (PS) activation was proposed for the sensitive and selective detection of TPHP. The UV-assisted PS oxidation pretreatment could decompose the water-insoluble TPHP into smaller orthophosphates, which were further converted into HPA with the subsequently introduced vanadium‑molybdenum acid. The formed HPA served as a catalyst to oxidize luminol, and strong chemiluminescence at 425 nm was generated immediately. Furthermore, the degradation process of TPHP and chemiluminescence mechanism were also investigated. The results demonstrated that some reactive oxygen radicals such as SO4-, OH, 1O2, and O2-, were involved in the degradation and chemiluminescence reaction. Notably, this proposed chemiluminescence analytical strategy realized a highly sensitive detection for TPHP, and granted the limit of detection down to 0.38 ppt. This study provides an attractive perspective for the detection of emerging OPFRs.

Abstract
Excessive content of fluoride ions (F-) in water will lead to water pollution and endanger human health, so the research on the method of low-cost, rapid, and efficient detection of F- is of particular significance. In this work, an amino-functionalized ligand with an appropriate triplet energy excited state, 2'-amino-[1,1':4',1″-terphenyl]-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid (H4TPTC-NH2), was selected to construct a luminescent single-lanthanide metal-organic framework, EuTPTC-NH2, with uncoordinated amino groups for the detection of F-. Based on host-guest interactions, that is, hydrogen bonds formed between the free amino groups and F- ions, EuTPTC-NH2 was developed as a ratiometric fluorescence probe for F- detection with good anti-interference ability, low detection limit, high water stability, and selectivity. It was found that EuTPTC-NH2 has an excellent linear response to F- in the concentration range of 0-80 μM with high sensitivity and a low detection limit of 11.26 μM. A hydrogel membrane based on the combination of EuTPTC-NH2 and agarose was also prepared for the quantitative visual detection of F- in water.

Abstract
In this review, we describe recent progresses on the stimuli-responsive hybrid materials based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and their applications as a chemical sensor. In particular, we explain the unique functions originating from molecular assembly concerning POSS-containing soft materials mainly from our studies. POSS has an inorganic cubic core composed of silicon-oxygen (Si-O) bonds and organic substituents at each vertex. Owing to intrinsic properties of POSS, such as high thermal stability, rigidity, and low chemical reactivity, various robust hybrid materials have been developed. From the numerous numbers of POSS hybrids, we herein focus on the environment-sensitive optical materials in which molecular assembly of POSS itself and functional units connected to POSS should be a key factor for expressing material properties. We also explain the mechanisms of chemical sensors originating from these stimuli-responsive optical properties. Stimuli-responsive excimer emission and pollutant detectors, nanoplastic sensors with the water-dispersive POSS networks, trans fatty acid sensors, turn-on luminescent sensors for aerobic condition and fluoride anion sensors are described. We also mention the mechanochromic polyurethane hybrids and the thermally-durable mechanochromic luminescent materials. The roles of the unique optical properties from soft materials composed of rigid POSS, which doesn't have significant light-absorption and emission properties in the visible region, are surveyed.

Abstract
Developing an effective method for monitoring fluoride ion in biological samples is meaningful because fluoride ion plays a vital role in biological processes. In this contribution, a simple water-soluble ESIPT fluorescent probe 2-((4-((tert-butyldiphenylsilyl)oxy)-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)methyl)-1-ethylpyridin-1-ium iodide (SPI) was constructed for monitoring fluoride ion. The probe SPI containing pyridinium salt group exhibited preeminent water solubility. The probe SPI introducing a trimethyldiphenylsilyl ether recognition group displayed excellent selectivity for fluoride ion over other biologically relevant species. Additionally, the probe SPI exhibited a fast response for a fluoride ion, suggesting that it could provide real-time fluoride ion detection. Importantly, the probe could detect fluoride ion with a linear range of 0-70.0 × 10-6 M and a low detection limit of 1.16 × 10-6 M. Furthermore, probe SPI could detect fluoride ion with a large Stokes shift (98 nm), which was attributed to ESIPT fluorescence sensing process. At last, probe SPI was successfully employed to monitor fluoride ion in living cells.
