Abstract
Hexahydride OsH6(PiPr3)2 (1) releases H2 to form the isomeric tetrahydrides 2 a and 2 b of general formula OsH4(PiPr3)2. Tetrylenes E{N(SiMe3)2}2 (E=Ge, Sn) are able to selectively trap these isomers distinguishing between them. Tetrylene Ge{N(SiMe3)2}2 catches 2 b to generate OsH4{Ge[N(SiMe3)2]2}(PiPr3)2 (3), which has a piano stool geometry, while Sn{N(SiMe3)2}2 captures 2 a to give OsH4{Sn[N(SiMe3)2]2}(PiPr3)2 (4) with the donor atoms defining a pentagonal bipyramid around the osmium center.

Abstract
Borane coordination, B-H borane bond activation, and borane catenation via metal-mediated dehydrocoupling to form electron-precise B-B bonds are reported. The reaction of trans-[M(IMes)2Cl4] (M = W, Mo) (IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) with borates Li[BH3R] (R = Mes, Dur; Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 and Dur = 2,3,5,6-Me4C6H) afforded the complexes [M(IMes)(η2-H2BR)2(η1-H2BR)] (M = W: R = Mes 1, R = Dur 3; M = Mo: R = Mes 2, R = Dur 4). Three borane ligands are coordinated in 1-4 to the group 6 metal atom via five (σ-B-H) bonds. Reaction of 1 with the phosphines PMe3 and PEt3, respectively, led to the elimination of one of the borane ligands and afforded the hydrido (σ-B-H)-boryl bis(σ-B-H)-borane complexes trans-[W(IMes)(PR3)(η1-HBMes)(η2-H2BMes)(H)] (R = Me 5, R = Et 6), in which the metal atom inserted into one of the remaining σ-B-H bonds of the borane ligands. Reaction of 1 with an additional equivalent borane BH2Mes resulted in borane dehydrocoupling and formation of complex [W(IMes)(η4-BH2Mes-BMes-BMes-BH2Mes)] 7, featuring a unique B4 chain as a ligand. Reaction of trans-[W(IMes)2Cl4] with NaBH4 also led to B-B coupling, and the metallaborane cluster [{W(IMes)(BH4)}2(B5H9)] 9 was formed, in which two tungsten atoms bridge a B5 chain.

Abstract
A bare lead atom is a σ-donor ligand capable of linearly bonding and stabilizing two units of a classical polyhydride complex, with a high-valent metal center. As a proof of concept, we have prepared and characterized the μ2-tetrylide complex (PiPr3)2H4Os═Pb═OsH4(PiPr3)2 in the reaction of OsH6(PiPr3)2 with Pb{N(SiMe3)2}2. Although the Pb-Os bonds exhibit electrostatic interaction, the main orbital interactions result from two dative σ bonds from the lead atom to the osmium centers. The latter also provide much weaker π-backdonations.

Abstract
Complex IrH5(PiPr3)2 (1) activates two different σ-bonds of 3-phenoxy-1-phenylisoquinoline, 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-6-phenylpyridine, 2-(1H-indol-2-yl)-6-phenylpyridine, 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-6-phenylpyridine, N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-N'-phenylimidazolylidene, and 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)-4,6-dimethylbenzene to give IrH{κ3-C,N,C-[C6H4-isoqui-O-C6H4]}(PiPr3)2 (2), IrH{κ3-N,N,C-[NBzim-py-C6H4]}(PiPr3)2 (3), IrH{κ3-N,N,C-[Ind-py-C6H4]}(PiPr3)2 (4), IrH{κ3-C,N,O-[C6H4-py-C6H4O]}(PiPr3)2 (5), IrH{κ3-C,C,O-[C6H4-Im-C6H4O]}(PiPr3)2 (6), and IrH{κ3-N,C,C-[py-C6HMe2-C5H3N]}(PiPr3)2 (7), respectively. The activations are sequential, with the second generally being the slowest. Accordingly, dihydride intermediates IrH2{κ2-C,N-[C6H4-isoqui-O-C6H5]}(PiPr3)2 (2d), IrH2{κ2-N,N-[NBzim-py-C6H5]}(PiPr3)2 (3d), IrH2{κ2-N,N-[Ind-py-C6H5]}(PiPr3)2 (4d), and IrH2{κ2-N,C-[py-C6HMe2-py]}(PiPr3)2 (7d) were characterized spectroscopically. Complexes 3 and 5 are green phosphorescent emitters upon photoexcitation, exhibiting good absorption over a wide range of wavelengths, emission quantum yields about 0.70 in solution, long enough lifetimes (10-17 μs), and reversible electrochemical behavior. In agreement with these features, complex 3 promotes the photocatalytic α-amino C(sp3)-H arylation of N,N-dimethylaniline and N-phenylpiperidine with 1,4-dicyanobenzene and 4-cyanopyridine under blue LED light irradiation. The C-C coupling products are isolated in high yields with only 2 mol % of photocatalyst after 24 h.

Abstract
Two rigid β-elimination immune PCcarbeneP pincer ligands, differing in their electron donor properties by variation of the substitution pattern on the aromatic linker arms, were complexed to ruthenium to form the dichlorides LRRuCl2 (R = H or NMe2). These compounds were converted to hydrido chlorides by treatment with dihydrogen (H2) and a base. By converting to tert-butoxide derivatives in situ under an atmosphere of H2, the poly hydride PCalkylP complexes LHRRu(H)3 compounds were generated. In these complexes, H2 has added across the RuC bond in the PCcarbeneP starting materials. The polyhydrides are dynamic in solution and extensive NMR studies helped to elucidate the speciation and fluxional processes operative in this dynamic system. The polyhydride complexes react rapidly with CO2 to give the PCcarbeneP formato hydride complexes LRRu(H)-κ2-O2CH. For R = H, the 1,2-hydride shift from the anchoring alkyl of the PCalkylP carbon to the metal is reversible, but for R = NMe2 it is irreversible. The CO2 incorporated into the formato ligand of these compounds exchanges with free CO2via a bimolecular mechanism that is more rapid for R = NMe2 than for R = H; plausible explanations for this observation are proffered. Experiments designed to evaluate the efficacy of the R = NMe2 formato hydride complex as a catalyst precursor for CO2 hydrogenation to formate salts reveal poor performance in comparison to state-of-the-art ruthenium-based catalysts. This is due primarily to the precipitation of a dimeric μ-κ2-κ1-CO3 carbonate complex that is not an active catalyst for the reaction.

Abstract
Two complementary procedures are presented to prepare cis-pyridyl-iridium(III) emitters of the class [3b+3b+3b'] with two orthometalated ligands of the 2-phenylpyridine type (3b) and a third ligand (3b'). They allowed to obtain four emitters of this class and to compare their properties with those of the trans-pyridyl isomers. The finding starts from IrH5(PiPr3)2, which reacts with 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine to give fac-[Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}3] with an almost quantitative yield. Stirring the latter in the appropriate amount of a saturated solution of HCl in toluene results in the cis-pyridyl adduct IrCl{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ1-Cl-[Cl-H-py-C6MeH4]} stabilized with p-tolylpyridinium chloride, which can also be transformed into dimer cis-[Ir(μ-OH){κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2]2. Adduct IrCl{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ1-Cl-[Cl-H-py-C6MeH4]} directly generates cis-[Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ2-C,N-[C6H4-Isoqui]}] and cis-[Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ2-C,N-[C6H4-py]}] by transmetalation from Li[2-(isoquinolin-1-yl)-C6H4] and Li[py-2-C6H4]. Dimer cis-[Ir(μ-OH){κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2]2 is also a useful starting complex when the precursor molecule of 3b' has a fairly acidic hydrogen atom, suitable for removal by hydroxide groups. Thus, its reactions with 2-picolinic acid and acetylacetone (Hacac) lead to cis-Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ2-O,N-[OC(O)-py]} and cis-Ir{κ2-C,N-[C6MeH3-py]}2{κ2-O,O-[acac]}. The stereochemistry of the emitter does not significantly influence the emission wavelengths. On the contrary, its efficiency is highly dependent on and associated with the stability of the isomer. The more stable isomer shows a higher quantum yield and color purity.

Abstract
Reactions of the IrV hydride [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 {BDI=(Dipp)NC(Me)CH(Me)CN(Dipp); Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 } with E[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 (E=Sn, Pb) afforded the unusual dimeric dimetallotetrylenes ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -E)2 in good yields. Moreover, ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -Ge)2 was formed in situ from thermal decomposition of [Me BDIDipp ]Ir(H)2 Ge[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 . These reactions are accompanied by liberation of HN(SiMe3 )2 and H2 through the apparent cleavage of an E-N(SiMe3 )2 bond by Ir-H. In a reversal of this process, ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -E)2 reacted with excess H2 to regenerate [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 . Varying the concentrations of reactants led to formation of the trimeric ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH2 )3 (μ2 -E)3 . The further scope of this synthetic route was investigated with group 15 amides, and ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -Bi)2 was prepared by the reaction of [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 with Bi(NMe2 )3 or Bi(OtBu)3 to afford the first example of a "naked" two-coordinate Bi atom bound exclusively to transition metals. A viable mechanism that accounts for the formation of these products is proposed. Computational investigations of the Ir2 E2 (E=Sn, Pb) compounds characterized them as open-shell singlets with confined nonbonding lone pairs at the E centers. In contrast, Ir2 Bi2 is characterized as having a closed-shell singlet ground state.

Abstract
Conjugated molecules play a critical role in the construction of single-molecule devices. However, most conventional conjugated molecules, such as hydrocarbons, involve only a pπ-pπ conjugation of light elements. While the metal d-orbitals can introduce abundant electronic effects to achieve novel electronic properties, it is very scarce for the charge transport study of dπ-pπ conjugated pathways with a metal involved. Here, we employed the single-molecule break junction technique to investigate the charge transport through dπ-pπ conjugated backbones with metal-carbon multiple bonds integrated into the alternative conjugated pathways. The involved dπ-pπ conjugation not only supports high conductivity comparable to that of conjugated hydrocarbons but also significantly enhances the tunable diversity in electronic properties through the metal-induced secondary interaction. Specifically, the introduction of the metal brings an unconventionally stereoelectronic effect triggered by metal-carbon dπ-pπ hyperconjugation, which can be tuned by protonation taking place on the metal-carbon multiple bonds, collectively modulating the single-molecule rectification feature and transmission mechanism. This work demonstrates the promise of utilizing the diverse electronic effect of metals to design molecular devices.

Abstract
To commercialize hydrogen production by proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, the amount of rare and precious metal (iridium) required for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) must be greatly reduced. In order to solve the problem, carrier loading is used to reduce the amount of iridium. Unlike the carrier modified by conventional metal element doping, this work doped the carrier with the nonmetallic element and then prepared IrO2/TiBxO2 composite catalyst using the Adams melting method. B-doped TiO2 supports with different doping amounts show the main phase rutile structure. Among them, the conductivity of B-doped carrier shows an increasing trend with the increase of doping amount, because boron can form holes and negative centers after doping, and more carriers improve the conductivity of the support. In addition, since element B is manifested from inside to outside on the support, B can affect the catalytic process. After the manifestation of element B, the carrier loaded with IrO2 exhibited superior electrocatalytic properties. The voltammetric charge per unit mass of 40IrO2/TiB0.3O2#2 (where #2 represents B after manifestation) reaches 1970 mC (cm2 mg)-1, the corresponding overpotential is 273 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm-2, and the Tafel slope is 61.9 mV/dec Also, the charge transfer resistance is only 15 Ω. Finally, in the stability test, the composite catalyst is also better than pure IrO2 in the 20 000 s operation. Therefore, element B has an unexpectedly positive effect on the catalytic progress on the surface of the support after its manifestation.

Abstract
Reactions of the hexahydride OsH6(PiPr3)2 (1) with 2-butyne and 3-hexyne and the behavior of the resulting species toward pinacolborane (pinBH) have been investigated in the search for new hydroboration processes. Complex 1 reacts with 2-butyne to give 1-butene and the osmacyclopropene OsH2(η2-C2Me2)(PiPr3)2 (2). In toluene, at 80 °C, the coordinated hydrocarbon isomerizes into a η4-butenediyl form to afford OsH2(η4-CH2CHCHCH2)(PiPr3)2 (3). Isotopic labeling experiments indicate that the isomerization involves Me-to-COs hydrogen 1,2-shifts, which take place through the metal. The reaction of 1 with 3-hexyne gives 1-hexene and OsH2(η2-C2Et2)(PiPr3)2 (4). Similarly to 2, complex 4 evolves to η4-butenediyl derivatives OsH2(η4-CH2CHCHCHEt)(PiPr3)2 (5) and OsH2(η4-MeCHCHCHCHMe)(PiPr3)2 (6). In the presence of pinBH, complex 2 generates 2-pinacolboryl-1-butene and OsH{κ2-H,H-(H2Bpin)}(η2-HBpin)(PiPr3)2 (7). According to the formation of the borylated olefin, complex 2 is a catalyst precursor for the migratory hydroboration of 2-butyne and 3-hexyne to 2-pinacolboryl-1-butene and 4-pinacolboryl-1-hexene. During the hydroboration, complex 7 is the main osmium species. The hexahydride 1 also acts as a catalyst precursor, but it requires an induction period that causes the loss of 2 equiv of alkyne per equiv of osmium.

Abstract
Complex OsH4{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (1) activates the Si-H bond of triethylsilane, triphenylsilane, and 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane to give the silyl-osmium(IV)-trihydride derivatives OsH3(SiR3){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} [SiR3 = SiEt3 (2), SiPh3 (3), SiMe(OSiMe3)2 (4)] and H2. The activation takes place via an unsaturated tetrahydride intermediate, resulting from the dissociation of the oxygen atom of the pincer ligand 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diisopropylphosphino)xanthene (xant(PiPr2)2). This intermediate, which has been trapped to form OsH4{κ2-P,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}(PiPr3) (5), coordinates the Si-H bond of the silanes to subsequently undergo a homolytic cleavage. Kinetics of the reaction along with the observed primary isotope effect demonstrates that the Si-H rupture is the rate-determining step of the activation. Complex 2 reacts with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol and 1-phenyl-1-propyne. The reaction with the former affords Os{C≡CC(OH)Ph2}2{=C=CHC(OH)Ph2}{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (6), which catalyzes the conversion of the propargylic alcohol into (E)-2-(5,5-diphenylfuran-2(5H)-ylidene)-1,1-diphenylethan-1-ol, via (Z)-enynediol. In methanol, the hydroxyvinylidene ligand of 6 dehydrates to allenylidene, generating Os{C≡CC(OH)Ph2}2{=C=C=CPh2}{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (7). The reaction of 2 with 1-phenyl-1-propyne leads to OsH{κ1-C,η2-[C6H4CH2CH=CH2]}{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (8) and PhCH2CH=CH(SiEt3).

Abstract
The silylation of a phosphine of OsH6 (Pi Pr3 )2 is performed via net-metathesis between Si-C(spn ) and H-C(sp3 ) σ-bonds (n=2, 3). Complex OsH6 (Pi Pr3 )2 activates the Si-H bond of Et3 SiH and Ph3 SiH to give OsH5 (SiR3 )(Pi Pr3 )2 , which yield OsH4 {κ1 -P,η2 -SiH-[i Pr2 PCH(Me)CH2 SiR2 H]}(Pi Pr3 ) and R-H (R=Et, Ph), by displacement of a silyl substituent with a methyl group of a phosphine. Such displacement is a first-order process, with activation entropy consistent with a rate determining step occurring via a highly ordered transition state. It displays selectivity, releasing the hydrocarbon resulting from the rupture of the weakest Si-substituent bond, when the silyl ligand bears different substituents. Accordingly, reactions of OsH6 (Pi Pr3 )2 with dimethylphenylsilane, and 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane afford OsH5 (SiR2 R')(Pi Pr3 )2 , which evolve into OsH4 {κ1 -P,η2 -GeH-[i Pr2 PCH(Me)CH2 SiR2 H]}(Pi Pr3 ) (R=Me, OSiMe3 ) and R'-H (R'=Ph, Me). Exchange reaction is extended to Et3 GeH. The latter reacts with OsH6 (Pi Pr3 )2 to give OsH5 (GeEt3 )(Pi Pr3 )2 , which loses ethane to form OsH4 {κ1 -P,η2 -GeH-[i Pr2 PCH(Me)CH2 GeEt2 H]}(Pi Pr3 ).

Abstract
The preparation of aromatic hydride-osmaoxazolium and hydride-oxazole compounds is reported and their reactivity toward phenylacetylene investigated. Complex [OsH(OH)(≡CPh)(IPr)(PiPr3)]OTf (1; IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolylidene, OTf = CF3SO3) reacts with acetonitrile and benzonitrile to give [OsH{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)NHC(R)O]}(NCR)(IPr)(PiPr3)]OTf (R = Me (2), Ph (3)) via amidate intermediates, which are generated by addition of the hydroxide ligand to the nitrile. In agreement with this, the addition of 2-phenylacetamide to acetonitrile solutions of 1 gives [OsH{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)NHC(CH2Ph)O]}(NCCH3)(IPr)(PiPr3)]OTf (4). The deprotonation of the osmaoxazolium ring of 2 and 4 leads to the oxazole derivatives OsH{κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)NC(R)O]}(IPr)(PiPr3) (R = Me (5), CH2Ph (6)). Complexes 2 and 4 add their Os-H and Os-C bonds to the C-C triple bond of phenylacetylene to afford [Os{η3-C 3 ,κ1-O-[CH2C(Ph)C(Ph)NHC(R)O]}(NCCH3)2(IPr)]OTf (R = Me (7), CH2Ph (8)), bearing a tridentate amide-N-functionalized allyl ligand, while complexes 5 and 6 undergo a vicarious nucleophilic substitution of the hydride at the metal center with the alkyne, via the compressed dihydride adduct intermediates OsH2(C≡CPh){κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)NC(R)O]}(IPr)(PiPr3) (R = Me (9), CH2Ph (10)), which reductively eliminate H2 to yield the acetylide-osmaoxazoles Os(C≡CPh){κ2-C,O-[C(Ph)NC(R)O]}(IPr)(PiPr3) (R = Me (11), CH2Ph (12)).

Abstract
The hexahydride complex OsH6(PiPr3)2 promotes the C-H bond activation of the 1,3-disubstituted phenyl group of the [BF4]- and [BPh4]- salts of the cations 1-(3-(isoquinolin-1-yl)phenyl)-3-methylimidazolium and 1-(3-(isoquinolin-1-yl)phenyl)-3-methylbenzimidazolium. The reactions selectively afford neutral and cationic trihydride-osmium(IV) derivatives bearing κ2-C,N- or κ2-C,C-chelating ligands, a cationic dihydride-osmium(IV) complex stabilized by a κ3-C,C,N-pincer group, and a bimetallic hexahydride formed by two trihydride-osmium(IV) fragments. The metal centers of the hexahydride are separated by a bridging ligand, composed of κ2-C,N- and κ2-C,C-chelating moieties, which allows electronic communication between the metal centers. The wide variety of obtained compounds and the high selectivity observed in their formation is a consequence of the main role of the azolium group during the activation and of the existence of significant differences in behavior between the azolium groups. The azolium role is governed by the anion of the salt, whereas the azolium behavior depends upon its imidazolium or benzimidazolium nature. While [BF4]- inhibits the azolium reactions, [BPh4]- favors the azolium participation in the activation process. In contrast to benzimidazolylidene, the imidazolylidene resulting from the deprotonation of the imidazolium substituent coordinates in an abnormal fashion to direct the phenyl C-H bond activation to the 2-position. The hydride ligands of the cationic dihydride-osmium(IV) pincer complex display intense quantum mechanical exchange coupling. Furthermore, this salt is a red phosphorescent emitter upon photoexcitation and displays a noticeable catalytic activity for the dehydrogenation of 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone and of 1,2-phenylenedimethanol to 1-isobenzofuranone. The bimetallic hexahydride shows catalytic synergism between the metals, in the dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline and alcohols.

Abstract
![]()
The reaction of the hexahydride OsH6(PiPr3)2 with a P,Ge,P-germylene-diphosphine
affords
an osmium tetrahydride derivative bearing a Ge,P-chelate, which arises
from the hydrogenolysis of a P–C(sp3) bond. This
Os(IV)–Ge(II) compound is a pioneering example of a bifunctional
catalyst based on the coordination of a σ-donor acid, which
is active in the dehydrogenation of formic acid to H2 and CO2. The kinetics
of the dehydrogenation, the characterization of the resting state
of the catalysis, and DFT calculations point out that the hydrogen
formation (the fast stage) exclusively occurs on the coordination
sphere of the basic metal center, whereas both the metal center and
the σ-donor Lewis acid cooperatively participate in the CO2 release (the rate-determining step). During the process,
the formate group pivots around the germanium to approach its hydrogen
atom to the osmium center, which allows its transfer to the metal
and the CO2 release. An alternative
class of bifunctional catalysts can be assembled
by coordination of σ-donor Lewis acids to platinum-group-metal
basic fragments. In contrast to what happens with the previously reported
bifunctional catalysts, this design allows enhancing the basicity
of the base and the acidity of the acid. According to this, a bifunctional
catalyst for the dehydrogenation of formic acid, based on an osmium(IV)-germylene
cooperative system, has been prepared and the mechanism of the catalysis
established.

Abstract

The hexahydride OsH6(PiPr3)2 competently catalyzes the hydration
of aliphatic nitriles
to amides. The main metal species under the catalytic conditions are
the trihydride osmium(IV) amidate derivatives OsH3{κ2-N,O-[HNC(O)R]}(PiPr3)2, which have been isolated and fully characterized
for R = iPr and tBu. The rate of hydration is
proportional to the concentrations of the catalyst precursor, nitrile,
and water. When these experimental findings and density functional
theory calculations are combined, the mechanism of catalysis has been
established. Complexes OsH3{κ2-N,O-[HNC(O)R]}(PiPr3)2 dissociate the carbonyl group of the chelate to afford
κ1-N-amidate derivatives, which
coordinate the nitrile. The subsequent attack of an external water
molecule to both the C(sp) atom of the nitrile and the N atom of the
amidate affords the amide and regenerates the κ1-N-amidate catalysts. The attack is concerted and takes place
through a cyclic six-membered transition state, which involves Cnitrile···O–H···Namidate interactions. Before the attack, the free carbonyl
group of the κ1-N-amidate ligand
fixes the water molecule in the vicinity of the C(sp) atom of the
nitrile. The hexahydride complex OsH6(PiPr3)2 competently catalyzes the
hydration of aliphatic
nitriles to amides. Isolation of the main metal species under the
catalytic conditions, kinetics of hydration, and density functional
theory calculations support an alternative mechanism to those previously
reported.

Abstract
![]()
An unusual 1,3-hydrogen shift from the metal center to the Cβ atom of the C3-chain of the allenylidene
ligand in a hydride-osmium(II)-allenylidene complex is the beginning
of several interesting transformations in the cumulene. The hydride-osmium(II)-allenylidene
complex was prepared in two steps, starting from the tetrahydride
dimer [(Os(H···H){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]})2(μ-Cl)2][BF4]2 (1). Complex 1 reacts with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol to give the hydride-osmium(II)-alkenylcarbyne
[OsHCl(≡CCH=CPh2){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}]BF4 (2), which yields OsHCl(=C=C=CPh2){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (3) by selective abstraction of the Cβ–H hydrogen atom of the alkenylcarbyne ligand
with KtBuO. Complex 3 is
metastable. According to results of DFT calculations, the migration
of the hydride ligand to the Cβ atom of the cumulene
has an activation energy too high to occur in a concerted manner.
However, the migration can be catalyzed by water, alcohols, and aldehydes.
The resulting alkenylcarbyne-osmium(0) intermediate is unstable and
evolves into a 7:3 mixture of the hydride-osmium(II)-indenylidene
OsHCl(=CIndPh){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (4) and the osmanaphthalene
OsCl(C9H6Ph){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (5). Protonation
of 4 with HBF4 leads to the elongated dihydrogen
complex [OsCl(η2-H2)(=CIndPh){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}]BF4 (6), while the protonation
of 5 regenerates 2. In contrast to 4, complex 6 evolves to a half-sandwich indenyl
derivative, [Os(η5-IndPh)H{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}][BF4]Cl
(7). Phenylacetylene also provokes the 1,3-hydrogen shift
in 3. However, it does not participate in the migration.
In contrast to water, alcohols, and aldehydes, it stabilizes the resulting
alkenylcarbyne to afford [Os(≡CCH=CPh2)(η2-HC≡CPh){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}]Cl (8).

Abstract

Rhodium
and iridium diolefin catalysts for the acceptorless and
base-free dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols have been prepared,
and their degradation has been investigated, during the study of the
reactivity of the dimers [M(μ-Cl)(η4-C8H12)]2 (M = Rh (1), Ir
(2)) and [M(μ-OH)(η4-C8H12)]2 (M = Rh (3), Ir (4)) with 1,3-bis(6′-methyl-2′-pyridylimino)isoindoline
(HBMePHI). Complex 1 reacts with HBMePHI, in dichloromethane,
to afford equilibrium mixtures of 1, the mononuclear
derivative RhCl(η4-C8H12){κ1-Npy-(HBMePHI)} (5), and the binuclear species [RhCl(η4-C8H12)]2{μ-Npy,Npy-(HBMePHI)} (6). Under
the same conditions, complex 2 affords the iridium counterparts
IrCl(η4-C8H12){κ1-Npy-(HBMePHI)} (7) and [IrCl(η4-C8H12)]2{μ-Npy,Npy-(HBMePHI)} (8). In contrast to chloride,
one of the hydroxide groups of 3 and 4 promotes
the deprotonation of HBMePHI to give [M(η4-C8H12)]2(μ-OH){μ-Npy,Niso-(BMePHI)} (M = Rh
(9), Ir (10)), which are efficient precatalysts
for the acceptorless and base-free dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols.
In the presence of KOtBu, the [BMePHI]− ligand undergoes three different degradations: alcoholysis
of an exocyclic isoindoline-N double bond, alcoholysis of a pyridyl-N
bond, and opening of the five-membered ring of the isoindoline core.

Cyclometalated Osmium Compounds and beyond: Synthesis, Properties, Applications. Molecules 2021; 26:molecules26061563. Abstract
The synthesis of cyclometalated osmium complexes is usually more complicated than of other transition metals such as Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, where cyclometalation reactions readily occur via direct activation of C–H bonds. It differs also from their ruthenium analogs. Cyclometalation for osmium usually occurs under more severe conditions, in polar solvents, using specific precursors, stronger acids, or bases. Such requirements expand reaction mechanisms to electrophilic activation, transmetalation, and oxidative addition, often involving C–H bond activations. Osmacycles exhibit specific applications in homogeneous catalysis, photophysics, bioelectrocatalysis and are studied as anticancer agents. This review describes major synthetic pathways to osmacycles and related compounds and discusses their practical applications.

Abstract

The
C,N,N′-donor aryl-diimineborate pincer ligand of the
complexes OsH2{κ3-C,N,N-[C6H3RCH=NB(cat)N=CHC6H4R]}(PiPr3)2 (R
= H, Me) has been generated in a one-pot procedure, by the reaction
of the hexahydride OsH6(PiPr3)2 with catecholborane (catBH) and two molecules of the corresponding
aryl nitrile. The osmium–pincer bonding situation has been
analyzed by means of atoms in molecules (AIM), natural bond orbital
(NBO), and energy decomposition analysis coupled with the natural
orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) methods. According to the
results, the complexes exhibit a rather strong electron-sharing Os–C
bond, two weaker donor–acceptor N–Os bonds, and two
π-back-donations from the transition metal to vacant π*
orbitals of the formed metallacycles. In addition, spectroscopic findings
and DFT calculations reveal that the donor units of the pincer are
incorporated in a sequential manner. First, the central Os–N
bond is formed, by the reaction of the dihydrideborate ligand of the
intermediate OsH3{κ2-H,H-(H2Bcat)}(PiPr3)2 with one of the aryl nitriles. The subsequent oxidative
addition of the o-C–H bond of the aryl substituent
of the resulting κ1-N-(N-boryl-arylaldimine) affords the Os–C bond. Finally, the second
Os–N bond is generated from a hydride, an ortho-metalated N-boryl-arylaldimine, and the second aryl nitrile.

Abstract

Reactions of polyhydrides OsH6(PiPr3)2 (1)
and IrH5(PiPr3)2 (2) with rollover cyclometalated
hydride complexes have been investigated in order to explore the influence
of a metal center on the MHn unit of the
other in mixed valence binuclear polyhydrides. Hexahydride 1 activates an ortho-CH bond of the heterocyclic
moiety of the trihydride metal–ligand compounds OsH3{κ2-C,N-[C5RH2N-py]}(PiPr3)2 (R = H (3), Me (4), Ph (5)). Reactions of 3 and 4 lead to the hexahydrides
(PiPr3)2H3Os{μ-[κ2-C,N-[C5RH2N-C5H3N]-N,C-κ2]}OsH3(PiPr3)2 (R = H (6), Me (7)),
whereas 5 gives the pentahydride (PiPr3)2H3Os{μ-[κ2-C,N-[C5H3N-C5(C6H4)H2N]-C,N,C-κ3]}OsH2(PiPr3)2 (8).
Pentahydride 2 promotes C—H bond activation of 3 and the iridium-dihydride IrH2{κ2-C,N-[C5H3N-py]}(PiPr3)2 (9)
to afford the heterobinuclear pentahydride (PiPr3)2H3Os{μ-[κ2-C,N-[C5H3N-C5H3N]-N,C-κ2]}IrH2(PiPr3)2 (10) and the homobinuclear tetrahydride (PiPr3)2H2Ir{μ-[κ2-C,N-[C5H3N-C5H3N]-N,C-κ2]}IrH2(PiPr3)2 (11), respectively. Complexes 6–8 and 11 display HOMO delocalization
throughout the metal–heterocycle-metal skeleton. Their sequential
oxidation generates mono- and diradicals, which exhibit intervalence
charge transfer transitions. This notable ability allows the tuning
of the strength of the hydrogen–hydrogen and metal–hydrogen
interactions within the MHn units. The influence of a metal center on the
MHn unit of the other in binuclear osmium-
and iridium-polyhydride
complexes bearing rollover cyclometalated bipyridines as a bridging
ligand has been studied.

Abstract
A reversible carbon-boron bond formation has been observed in the reaction of the coordinatively unsaturated, cyclometalated, Pt(ii) complex [Pt(I t BuiPr')(I t BuiPr)][BArF], 1, with tricoordinated boranes HBR2. X-ray diffraction studies provided structural snapshots of the sequence of reactions involved in the process. At low temperature, we observed the initial formation of the unprecedented σ-BH complexes [Pt(HBR2)(I t BuiPr')(I t BuiPr)][BArF], one of which has been isolated. From -15 to +10 °C, the σ-BH species undergo a carbon-boron coupling process leading to the platinum hydride derivative [Pt(H)(I t BuiPr-BR2)(I t BuiPr)][BArF], 4. Surprisingly, these compounds are thermally unstable undergoing carbon-boron bond cleavage at room temperature that results in the 14-electron Pt(ii) boryl species [Pt(BR2)(I t BuiPr)2][BArF], 2. This unusual reaction process has been corroborated by computational methods, which indicate that the carbon-boron coupling products 4 are formed under kinetic control whereas the platinum boryl species 2, arising from competitive C-H bond coupling, are thermodynamically more stable. These findings provide valuable information about the factors governing productive carbon-boron coupling reactions at transition metal centers.

Abstract
A synthetic methodology to prepare iridium(III) emitters of the class [3b+3b+3b'] with two ortho-metalated 1-phenylisoquinolines and an asymmetrical β-diketonate has been discovered. The abstraction of the chloride ligands of the dimer [Ir(μ-Cl){κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2]2 (1, C6H5-isoqui = 1-phenylisoquinoline) with AgBF4 in acetone and the subsequent addition of water to the resulting solution affords the water solvate mononuclear complex [Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2(H2O)2]BF4 (2), which reacts with KOH to give the dihydroxo-bridged dimer [Ir(μ-OH){κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2]2 (3). Treatment of the latter with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate leads to Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2{κ2-O,O-[OC(CO2CH3)CHC(OCH3)O]} (4), as a result of the anti-addition of the O-H bond of a mononuclear [Ir(OH){κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2] fragment to the C-C triple bond of the alkyne and the coordination of one of the carboxylate substituents to the metal center. Complex 3 also reacts with α,β-unsaturated ketones. The reaction with 3-(4-methylphenyl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one affords Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2{κ2-O,O-[OC(C6H5)CHC(p-C6H4Me)O]} (5), whereas methyl vinyl ketone gives a mixture of Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2{κ2-O,O-[OC(CH3)CHCHO]} (6) and Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2{κ2-O,O-[OC(CH3)CHC(CH═CH2)O]} (7). Complexes 5 and 6 are the result of the addition of the O-H bond of the mononuclear [Ir(OH){κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2] fragment to the C-C double bond of the α,β-unsaturated ketones and the coordination of the carbonyl group to the iridium center, to generate O,O-chelates which lose molecular hydrogen to aromatize into the asymmetrical β-diketonate ligands. Complexes 4-7 are phosphorescent emitters in the red spectral region (599-672 nm) in doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film at 5 wt % at room temperature and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at room temperature and 77 K. They display short lifetimes (0.8-2.5 μs) and quantum yields in both doped PMMA films and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at room temperature depending on the substituents of the β-diketonate: about 0.6-0.5 for 4 and 6 and ca. 0.35 for 5 and 7.

Abstract
Hydride complexes resulting from the oxidative addition of C–H bonds are intermediates in hydrocarbon activation and functionalization reactions. The discovery of metal systems that enable their direct formation through photoexcitation with visible light could lead to advantageous synthetic methodologies. In this study, easily accessible dimers [Pt2(μ-Cl)2(C^N)2] (C^N = cyclometalated 2-arylpyridine) are demonstrated as a very convenient source of Pt(C^N) subunits, which promote photooxidative C–H addition reactions with different 2-arylpyridines (N′^C′H) upon irradiation with blue light. The resulting [PtH(Cl)(C^N)(C′^N′)] complexes are the first isolable Pt(iv) hydrides arising from a cyclometalation reaction. A transcyclometalation process involving three photochemical steps is elucidated, which occurs when the C^N ligand is a monocyclometalated 2,6-diarylpyridine, and a detailed analysis of the photoreactivity associated with the Pt(C^N) moiety is provided. Alkyne insertions into the Pt–H bond of a photogenerated Pt(iv) hydride are also reported as a demonstration of the ability of this class of compounds to undergo subsequent organometallic reactions. The photochemical generation of isolable bis-cyclometalated Pt(iv) hydrides via photooxidative C–H addition reactions is demonstrated from easily accessible Pt(ii) precursors using visible light.![]()

Abstract
The saturated trihydride IrH3 {κ3 -P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2 )2 ]} (1; xant(PiPr2 )2 =9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diisopropylphosphino)xanthene) activates the B-H bond of two molecules of pinacolborane (HBpin) to give H2 , the hydride-boryl derivatives IrH2 (Bpin){κ3 -P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2 )2 ]} (2) and IrH(Bpin)2 {κ3 -P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2 )2 ]} (3) in a sequential manner. Complex 3 activates a C-H bond of two molecules of benzene to form PhBpin and regenerates 2 and 1, also in a sequential manner. Thus, complexes 1, 2, and 3 define two cycles for the catalytic direct C-H borylation of arenes with HBpin, which have dihydride 2 as a common intermediate. C-H bond activation of the arenes is the rate-determining step of both cycles, as the C-H oxidative addition to 3 is faster than to 2. The results from a kinetic study of the reactions of 1 and 2 with HBpin support a cooperative function of the hydride ligands in the B-H bond activation. The addition of the boron atom of the borane to a hydride facilitates the coordination of the B-H bond through the formation of κ1 - and κ2 -dihydrideborate intermediates.

Abstract
Our planet urgently needs sustainable solutions to alleviate the anthropogenic global warming and climate change. Homogeneous catalysis has the potential to play a fundamental role in this process, providing novel, efficient, and at the same time eco-friendly routes for both chemicals and energy production. In particular, pincer-type ligation shows promising properties in terms of long-term stability and selectivity, as well as allowing for mild reaction conditions and low catalyst loading. Indeed, pincer complexes have been applied to a plethora of sustainable chemical processes, such as hydrogen release, CO2 capture and conversion, N2 fixation, and biomass valorization for the synthesis of high-value chemicals and fuels. In this work, we show the main advances of the last five years in the use of pincer transition metal complexes in key catalytic processes aiming for a more sustainable chemical and energy production.

Abstract
The σ-amine-borane pincer complex [Rh(PONOP)(η1-H3B·NMe3)][BArF4] [2, PONOP = κ3-NC5H3-2,6-(OPtBu2)2] is prepared by addition of H3B·NMe3 to the dihydrogen precursor [Rh(PONOP)(η2-H2)][BArF4], 1. In a similar way the related H3B·NMe2H complex [Rh(PONOP)(η1-H3B·NMe2H)][BArF4], 3, can be made in situ, but this undergoes dehydrocoupling to reform 1 and give the aminoborane dimer [H2BNMe2]2. NMR studies on this system reveal an intermediate neutral hydride forms, Rh(PONOP)H, 4, that has been prepared independently. 1 is a competent catalyst (2 mol%, ∼30 min) for the dehydrocoupling of H3B·Me2H. Kinetic, mechanistic and computational studies point to the role of NMe2H in both forming the neutral hydride, via deprotonation of a σ-amine-borane complex and formation of aminoborane, and closing the catalytic cycle by reprotonation of the hydride by the thus-formed dimethyl ammonium [NMe2H2]+. Competitive processes involving the generation of boronium [H2B(NMe2H)2]+ are also discussed, but shown to be higher in energy. Off-cycle adducts between [NMe2H2]+ or [H2B(NMe2H)2]+ and amine-boranes are also discussed that act to modify the kinetics of dehydrocoupling.
