Metal-Metal (MM) Bond Distances and Bond Orders in Binuclear Metal Complexes of the First Row Transition Metals Titanium Through Zinc

Binuclear Lantern Complexes of All First-Row 3d Metals Scandium to Zinc: Metal-Metal Bond Lengths and Bond Orders, with Measures of Intrinsic Metal-Metal Bond Strength

The B3LYP and M06-L functionals with the cc-pVTZ basis set are used to study lantern-type binuclear complexes of all the first-row (3d block) metals scandium to zinc in various low-energy spin states, out of which the ground states are predicted. These complexes are studied as models using mostly the unsubstituted formamidinate ligand. For each metal, metal-metal (MM) bond lengths are related to the formal MM bond orders (zero to five), derived by MO analysis and by electron counting. The predicted ground-state spin multiplicities and MM bond lengths of the model complexes generally agree fairly well with available experimental results on substituted analogues. Finally, values of the formal shortness ratio and Wiberg index for the MM bonds in all of these complexes in all spin states studied are categorized into ranges according to the MM bond orders 0 to 5 in steps of 0.5. The trends shown validate their use in estimating intrinsic metal-metal bond strength regardless of the metal.

Modulation of Fe-Fe distance and spin in diiron complexes using tetradentate ligands with different flanking donors

Here we report the synthesis and characterization of diiron complexes containing triaryl N4 and N2S2 ligands derived from o-phenylenediamine. The complexes display significant differences in Fe-Fe distances and magnetic properties that depend on the identity of the flanking NMe2 and SMe donor groups.

Torsion Effects Beyond the δ Bond and the Role of π Metal-Ligand Interactions

Previous studies on bimetallic paddlewheel compounds have established a direct correlation between metal-metal distance and ligand torsion angles, leading to the rule that higher torsion results in longer metal-metal bond distances. Here, the new discovery based on diarylformamidinate Ru₂⁵⁺ paddlewheel compounds [Ru2Cl(DArF)4] that show an opposite behavior is reported: higher torsions lead to shorter metal-metal distances. This discovery challenges the assumption that internal rotation solely impacts the δ bond. By combining experimental and theoretical techniques, it is demostrated that this trend is associated with previously overlooked π metal-ligand interactions. These π metal-ligand interactions are a direct consequence of the paddlewheel structure and the conjugated nature of the bidentate ligands. This findings offer far-reaching insights into the influence of equatorial ligands and their π-conjugation characteristics on the electronic properties of paddlewheel complexes. That this effect is not exclusive of diruthenium compounds but also occurs in other bimetallic cores such as ditungsten or dirhodium is demonstrated, and with other ligands showing allyl type conjugation. These results provide a novel approach for fine-tuning the properties of these compounds with significant implications for materials design.

Ferromagnetically Coupled Chromium(III) Dimer Shows Luminescence and Sensitizes Photon Upconversion

There has been much progress on mononuclear chromium(III) complexes featuring luminescence and photoredox activity, but dinuclear chromium(III) complexes have remained underexplored in these contexts until now. We identified a tridentate chelate ligand able to accommodate both meridional and facial coordination of chromium(III), to either access a mono- or a dinuclear chromium(III) complex depending on reaction conditions. This chelate ligand causes tetragonally distorted primary coordination spheres around chromium(III) in both complexes, entailing comparatively short excited-state lifetimes in the range of 400 to 800 ns in solution at room temperature and making photoluminescence essentially oxygen insensitive. The two chromium(III) ions in the dimer experience ferromagnetic exchange interactions that result in a high spin (S=3) ground state with a coupling constant of +9.3 cm-1. Photoinduced energy transfer from the luminescent ferromagnetically coupled dimer to an anthracene derivative results in sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion. Based on these proof-of-principle studies, dinuclear chromium(III) complexes seem attractive for the development of fundamentally new types of photophysics and photochemistry enabled by magnetic exchange interactions.

A one-pot reduction route to bimetallic manganese 1,8-naphthyridine complexes

Reaction of the dinucleating ligand 2,7-bis(6-methyl-2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine (MeL) with the MnI and MnII precursors MnBr(CO)5 and MnCl2 resulted in the formation of the monometallic complexes [MnBr(CO)3(MeL)] (1) and [MnCl2(MeL)] (3). In both cases, formation of bimetallic manganese complexes could be achieved by reduction with KC8, yielding the carbonyl-bridged complex [Mn2(CO)6(MeL)] (2) and the helicate complex [Mn2(MeL)2] (4), respectively. EPR results demonstrate that 4 represents a novel, weakly antiferromagnetically coupled homovalent dimer (J = -0.85 cm-1). The two formally Mn0 ions are both high spin (S = 3/2) and exhibit a zero-field splitting of ≈1 cm-1, suggesting reduction of the complex is substantially ligand centered, and may be better described as a MnII complex coupled to two open shell singlet ligands [MnII2(MeL2-)2]. X-ray crystallography, UV-Vis spectroscopy and DFT analysis support this finding.

Pd8 Nanocluster with Nonmetal-to-Metal- Ring Coordination and Promising Photothermal Conversion Efficiency

Constructing ambient-stable, single-atom-layered metal-based materials with atomic precision and understanding their underlying stability mechanisms are challenging. Here, stable single-atom-layered nanoclusters of Pd were synthesized and precisely characterized through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A pseudo-pentalene-like Pd8 unit was found in the nanocluster, interacting with two syn PPh units through nonmetal-to-metal -ring coordination. The unexpected coordination, which is distinctly different from the typical organoring-to-metal coordination in half-sandwich-type organometallic compounds, contributes to the ambient stability of the as-obtained single-atom-layered nanocluster as revealed through theoretical and experimental analyses. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations revealed dominant electron transition along the horizontal x-direction of the Pd8 plane, indicating high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of the nanocluster, which was verified by the experimental PCE of 73.3 %. Therefore, this study unveils the birth of a novel type of compound and the finding of the unusual nonmetal-to-metal -ring coordination and has important implications for future syntheses, structures, properties, and structure-property correlations of single-atom-layered metal-based materials.

CO2 and H2 Activation on Zinc-Doped Copper Clusters

Here we systematically investigate the CO2 and H2 activation and dissociation on small Cun Zn0/+ (n=3-6) clusters using Density Functional Theory. We show that Cu6 Zn is a superatom, displaying an increased HOMO-LUMO gap and is inert towards CO2 or H2 activation or dissociation. While other neutral clusters weakly activate CO2 , the cationic clusters preferentially bind the CO2 in monodentate nonactivated way. Notably, Cu4 Zn allows for the dissociation of activated CO2 , whereas larger clusters destabilize all activated CO2 binding modes. Conversely, H2 dissociation is favored on all clusters examined, except for Cu6 Zn. Cu3 Zn+ and Cu4 Zn, favor the formation of formate through the H2 dissociation pathway rather than CO2 dissociation. These findings suggest the potential of these clusters as synthetic targets and underscore their significance in the realm of CO2 hydrogenation.

On-Surface Synthesis of Multiple Cu Atom-Bridged Organometallic Oligomers

A metal-metal bond between coordination complexes has the nature of a covalent bond in hydrocarbons. While bimetallic and trimetallic compounds usually have three-dimensional structures in solution, the high directionality and robustness of the bond can be applied for on-surface syntheses. Here, we present a systematic formation of complex organometallic oligomers on Cu(111) through sequential ring opening of 11,11,12,12-tetraphenyl-1,4,5,8-tetraazaanthraquinodimethane and bonding of phenanthroline derivatives by multiple Cu atoms. A detailed characterization with a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations revealed the role of the Cu adatoms in both enantiomers of the chiral oligomers. Furthermore, we found sufficient strength of the bonds against sliding friction by manipulating the oligomers up to a hexamer. This finding may help to increase the variety of organometallic nanostructures on surfaces.

Highly Selective Nickel-Catalyzed Isomerization-Hydroboration of Alkenes Affords Terminal Functionalization at Remote C-H Position

We report herein the synthesis and characterization of nickel complexes supported by tridentate and bidentate phosphino(silyl) ancillary ligands, along with the successful application of these complexes as precatalysts for the hydroboration of terminal and internal alkenes using pinacolborane (HBPin). These reactions proceeded with low nickel loadings of 2.5-5 mol % in the absence of co-solvent, and in some cases at room temperature. Isomerization to afford exclusively the terminal hydroboration product was obtained across a range of internal alkenes, including tri- and tetra-substituted examples. This reactivity is unprecedented for nickel and offers a powerful means of achieving functionalization at a C-H position remote from the C=C double bond. Nickel-catalyzed deuteroboration experiments using DBPin support a mechanism involving 1,2-insertion of the alkene and subsequent chain-walking, which results in isotopic scrambling.

Cleavage of Carbon Dioxide C=O Bond Promoted by Nickel-Boron Cooperativity in a PBP-Ni Complex

The synthesis and characterization of (tBu PBP)Ni(OAc) (5) by insertion of carbon dioxide into the Ni-C bond of (tBu PBP)NiMe (1) is presented. An unexpected CO2 cleavage process involving the formation of new B-O and Ni-CO bonds leads to the generation of a butterfly-structured tetra-nickel cluster (tBu PBOP)2 Ni4 (μ-CO)2 (6). Mechanistic investigation of this reaction indicates a reductive scission of CO2 by O-atom transfer to the boron atom via a cooperative nickel-boron mechanism. The CO2 activation reaction produces a three-coordinate (tBu P2 BO)Ni-acyl intermediate (A) that leads to a (tBu P2 BO)-NiI complex (B) via a likely radical pathway. The NiI species is trapped by treatment with the radical trap (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) to give (tBu P2 BO)NiII (η2 -TEMPO) (7). Additionally, 13 C and 1 H NMR spectroscopy analysis using 13 C-enriched CO2 provides information about the species involved in the CO2 activation process.

Measuring Metal-Metal Communication in a Series of Ketimide-Bridged [Fe2]6+ Complexes

Reaction of Fe(acac)3 with 3 equiv of Li[N═C(R)Ph] (R = Ph, tBu) results in the formation of the [Fe2]6+ complexes, [Fe2(μ-N═C(R)Ph)2(N═C(R)Ph)4] (R = Ph, 1; tBu, 2), in low to moderate yields. Reaction of FeCl2 with 6 equiv of Li(N═C13H8) (HN═C13H8 = 9-fluorenone imine) results in the formation of [Li(THF)2]2[Fe(N═C13H8)4] (3) in good yield. Subsequent oxidation of 3 with ca. 0.8 equiv of I2 generates the [Fe2]6+ complex, [Fe2(μ-N═C13H8)2(N═C13H8)4] (4), along with free fluorenyl ketazine. Complexes 1, 2, and 4 were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetometry. The Fe-Fe distances in 1, 2, and 4 range from 2.803(7) to 2.925(1) Å, indicating that no direct Fe-Fe interaction is present in these complexes. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra for complexes 1, 2, and 4 are all consistent with the presence of symmetry-equivalent high-spin Fe3+ centers. Finally, all three complexes exhibit a similar degree of antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal centers (J = -26 to -30 cm-1), as ascertained by SQUID magnetometry.

Stabilizing hydrogen-mediated sextuple bonds by quintuple superatomic bonding and a bond

Multiple bond orders of four and five are frequently obtained for d-block elements. However, compounds with sextuple bonding (2σ, 2π, and 2δ), for instance, Cr₂, Mo₂ and W₂, are less stable and trapped only in the gas phase or inert matrices, probably resulting from large repulsion of two σ-type (σ_s and ) orbitals within the same zone. Herein, a superatomic bonding model is proposed to describe experimentally synthesized bridging hydride compounds. We theoretically predicted four unprecedented quintuple bridging hydride species with large E_HL values, among which [(Cp)₂Sc₂(μ-H)₅]^- and [(Cp)₂Mn₂(μ-H)₅]^- (Cp = cyclopentadienyl) contain quintuple superatomic bonding (σ, 2π, and 2δ). In particular, two other species, [(Cp)₂Ti₂(μ-H)₅]^- and [(Cp)₂V₂(μ-H)₅]⁺, were found to feature stable hydrogen-mediated sextuple bonding comprising a quintuple superatomic delocalized bond and an extra localized bond. Thereinto, the superatomic σ_s bond disperses to the outer space for better overlap with the orbitals of bridging H atoms, thus leaving the inner regions with low electron densities and providing adequate space for the bond. These two quintuple bridging hydride compounds are verified to have thermal stability by molecular dynamics simulations and expected to provide an effective strategy to synthesize molecules with stable hydrogen-mediated sextuple bonding under normal experimental conditions.

Dative quadruple bonds between d10 transition metals and beryllium in BeM(PMe3 )2 and BeM(CO)2 (M = Ni, Pd, and Pt) complexes: Transition metal fragments as six-electron donor and two-electron acceptor

The structure, chemical bonding, and reactivity of neutral 16 valence electrons (VE) transition metal complexes of beryllium, BeM(PMe₃ )₂ (1M-Be) and BeM(CO)₂ (2M-Be, M = Ni, Pd, and Pt) were studied. The molecular orbital and EDA-NOCV analysis suggest dative quadruple bonds between the transition metal and beryllium, viz., one Be→M σ bond, one Be←M σ bond, and two Be←M π bonds. The strength of these bonding interactions varies based on the ligands coordinated to the transition metal. The Be←M σ bond is stronger than the Be→M σ bond when the ligand is PMe_3, whereas the reverse order is observed when the ligand is CO. This is attributed to the higher π acceptor strength of CO as compared to PMe₃ . Since these complexes have M-Be dative quadruple bonds, the beryllium center is susceptible to ambiphilic reactivity, as indicated by high proton and hydride affinity values.

Emerging d-d orbital coupling between non-d-block main-group elements Mg and I at high pressure

d-d orbital coupling, which increases anisotropic and directional bonding, commonly occurs between d-block transition metals. Here, we report an unexpected d-d orbital coupling in the non-d-block main-group element compound Mg₂I based on first-principles calculations. The unfilled d orbitals of Mg and I atoms under ambient conditions become part of the valence orbitals and couple with each other under high pressures, resulting in the formation of highly symmetric I-Mg-I covalent bonding in Mg₂I, which forces the valence electrons of Mg atoms into the lattice voids to form interstitial quasi-atoms (ISQs). In turn, the ISQs highly interact with the crystal lattice, contributing to lattice stability. This study greatly enriches the fundamental understanding of chemical bonding between non-d-block main-group elements at high pressures.

Lantern-type dinickel complexes: An exploration of possibilities for nickel-nickel bonding with bridging bidentate ligands

Many binuclear nickel complexes have NiNi distances suggesting NiNi covalent bonds, including lantern-type complexes with bridging bidentate ligands. This DFT study treats tetragonal, trigonal, and digonal lantern-type complexes with the formamidinate, guanidinate, and formate ligands, besides some others. Formal bond orders (ranging from zero to two) are assigned to all the NiNi bonds on the basis of MO occupancy considerations. A VB-based electron counting approach assigns plausible resonance structures to the dinickel cores. Model tetragonal complexes with the dimethylformamidinate and the dithioformate ligands have singlet ground states whose non-covalently bonded NiNi distances are close to those in their experimentally known counterparts. Trigonal dinickel complexes are unknown, but are predicted to have quartet ground states with NiNi bonds of order 0.5. The model digonal complexes are predicted to have triplet ground states, but the predicted NiNi bond lengths are longer than those found in their experimentally known counterparts. This could owe to inadequate treatment of electron correlation by DFT in these short NiNi bonds with their multiconfigurational character. All the NiNi bond distances here are categorized into ranges according to the NiNi bond orders of 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2, no NiNi bonds of order higher than two being identified. The NiNi bonds of given order in these lantern-type complexes are consistently shorter than the corresponding NiNi bonds in dinickel complexes having carbonyl ligands, attributable to the metalmetal bond lengthening effect of CO ligands.

Molecular Capacitors: Accessible 6- and 8-Electron Redox Chemistry from Dimeric "Ti(I)" and "Ti(0)" Synthons Supported by Imidazolin-2-Iminato Ligands

Reduction of the diamagnetic Ti(III)/Ti(III) dimer [Cl₂Ti(μ-NIm^Dipp)]₂ (1) (NIm^Dipp = [1,3-bis(Dipp)imidazolin-2-iminato]^-, Dipp = C₆H₃-2,6-ⁱPr₂) with 4 and 6 equiv of KC₈ generates the intramolecularly arene-masked, dinuclear titanium compounds [(μ-N-η⁶-Im^Dipp)Ti]₂ (2) and {[(Et₂O)₂K](μ-N-μ-η⁶:η⁶-Im^Dipp)Ti}₂ (3), respectively, in modest yields. The compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis, and inspection of the bond metrics within the η⁶-coordinated aryl substituent of the bridging imidazolin-2-iminato ligand shows perturbation of the aromatic system most consistent with two-electron reduction of the ring. As such, 2 and 3 can be assigned respectively as possessing metal centers in formal Ti(III)/Ti(III) and Ti(II)/Ti(II) oxidation states. Exploration of their redox chemistry reveal the ability to reduce several substrate equivalents. For instance, treatment of 2 with excess C₈H₈ (COT) forms the novel COT-bridged complex [(Im^DippN)(η⁸-COT)Ti](μ-η²:η³-COT)[Ti(η⁴-COT)(NIm^Dipp)] (4) that dissociates in THF solutions to give mononuclear (Im^DippN)Ti(η⁸-COT)(THF) (5). Addition of COT to 3 yields heterometallic [(Im^DippN)(η⁴-COT)Ti(μ-η⁴:η⁵-COT)K(THF)(μ-η⁶:η⁴-COT)Ti(NIm^Dipp)(μ-η⁴:η⁴-COT)K(THF)₂]_n (6). Compounds 4 and 5 are the products of the 4-electron oxidation of 2, while 6 stands as the 8-electron oxidation product of 3. Reduction of organozides was also explored. Low temperature reaction of 2 with 4 equiv of AdN₃ gives the terminal and bridged imido complex [(Im^DippN)Ti(═NAd)](μ-NAd)₂[Ti(NIm^Dipp)(N₃Ad)] (7) that undergoes intermolecular C-H activation of toluene at room temperature to afford the amido compound [(Im^DippN)Ti(NHAd)](μ-NAd)₂[Ti(C₆H₄Me)(NIm^Dipp)] (8-tol). These complexes are the 6-electron oxidation products of the reaction of 2 with AdN₃. Furthermore, treatment of 3 with 4 equiv of AdN₃ produces the thermally stable Ti(III)/Ti(III) terminal and bridged imido [K(18-crown-6)(THF)₂]{[(Im^DippN)Ti(NAd)](μ-NAd)₂K[Ti(NIm^Dipp)]} (10). Altogether, these reactions firmly establish 2 and 3 as unprecedented Ti(I)/Ti(I) and Ti(0)/Ti(0) synthons with the clear capacity to effect multielectron reductions ranging from 4 to 8 electrons.

Mimicking the Cu Active Site of Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenase Using Monoanionic Tridentate N-Donor Ligands

In an effort to prepare small molecule mimics of the active site of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO), three monoanionic tridentate N donor ligands comprising a central deprotonated amide group flanked by two neutral donors were prepared, and their coordination chemistry with Cu(I) and Cu(II) was evaluated. With Cu(I), a dimer formed, which was characterized by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. A variety of mononuclear and dinuclear Cu(II) species with a range of auxiliary ligands (MeCN, Cl^-, OH^-, OAc^-, OBz^-, CO₃ ^2-) were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction and various spectroscopies (UV-vis, EPR). The complexes exhibit structural similarities to the LPMO active site.

Elucidation of divergent desaturation pathways in the formation of vinyl isonitrile and isocyanoacrylate

Two different types of desaturations are employed by iron- and 2-oxoglutarate-dependent (Fe/2OG) enzymes to construct vinyl isonitrile and isocyanoacrylate moieties found in isonitrile-containing natural products. A substrate-bound protein structure reveals a plausible strategy to affect desaturation and hints at substrate promiscuity of these enzymes. Analogs are synthesized and used as mechanistic probes to validate structural observations. Instead of proceeding through hydroxylated intermediate as previously proposed, a plausible carbocation species is utilized to trigger C=C bond installation. These Fe/2OG enzymes can also accommodate analogs with opposite chirality and different functional groups including isonitrile-(D)-tyrosine, N-formyl tyrosine, and phloretic acid, while maintaining the reaction selectivity.

While canonical oxygen-rebound pathway has been utilized by several Fe/2OG enzymes, insights into the desaturation process remain to be elucidated. Here, the authors suggest that a carbocation might be deployed to enable chemically divergent desaturations through decarboxylation and deprotonation.

Oligopyrrolic Cu(II)-based tetragonal cage: synthesis, structure, and spectral and magnetic properties

The first oligopyrrolic Cu(II)-based metallocage featuring two antiferromagnetically coupled dimeric cupric tetracarboxylate units linked by a single molecule of water was assembled successfully using a nonlinear pyridine-pyrrolate ligand. Broken symmetry density functional theory (BS-DFT) calculations show that the exchange couplings between Cu(II) ions in the Cu₂ unit and over the water bridge are -298 and -0.13 cm^-1, respectively.

Two σ- and two π-dative quadruple bonds between the s-block element and transition metal in [BeM(CO)4; M = Fe - Os]

We report the chemical bonding and reactivity of the first example of neutral 18 valence electron transition metal complexes of beryllium, [BeM(CO)₄; M = Fe - Os], in trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry, where the bonding between the transition metal and the s-block element beryllium (M-Be) can be best described by dative quadruple bonds. In contrast to the conventional multiple bonding pattern, the quadruple bonds comprise two σ-bonds and two π-bonds, viz., one Be → M σ-bond, one M → Be σ-bond, and two M → Be π-bonds. Since the M-Be quadruple bonds are described by dative interactions, the Be centre shows ambiphilic character as indicated by the high proton and hydride affinity values.

Combining metal-metal cooperativity, metal-ligand cooperativity and chemical non-innocence in diiron carbonyl complexes

Several metalloenzymes, including [FeFe]-hydrogenase, employ cofactors wherein multiple metal atoms work together with surrounding ligands that mediate heterolytic and concerted proton-electron transfer (CPET) bond activation steps. Herein, we report a new dinucleating PNNP expanded pincer ligand, which can bind two low-valent iron atoms in close proximity to enable metal-metal cooperativity (MMC). In addition, reversible partial dearomatization of the ligand's naphthyridine core enables both heterolytic metal-ligand cooperativity (MLC) and chemical non-innocence through CPET steps. Thermochemical and computational studies show how a change in ligand binding mode can lower the bond dissociation free energy of ligand C(sp3)-H bonds by ∼25 kcal mol-1. H-atom abstraction enabled trapping of an unstable intermediate, which undergoes facile loss of two carbonyl ligands to form an unusual paramagnetic (S = ) complex containing a mixed-valent iron(0)-iron(i) core bound within a partially dearomatized PNNP ligand. Finally, cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that these diiron complexes show catalytic activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction. This work presents the first example of a ligand system that enables MMC, heterolytic MLC and chemical non-innocence, thereby providing important insights and opportunities for the development of bimetallic systems that exploit these features to enable new (catalytic) reactivity.

Non-redox reactivity of V(ii) and Fe(ii) formamidinates towards CO2 resulting in the formation of novel M(ii) carbamates

Multiple CO2 insertions into the M–N bonds of V(ii) and Fe(ii) bis(formamidinates) led to the isolation of three novel carbamates. The CO2 insertion effectivity depended on the solvent used and the metal centre's coordination sphere geometry.

Direct observation of reversible bond homolysis by 2D EXSY NMR

Bond homolysis is one of the most fundamental bond cleavage mechanisms. Thus, understanding of bond homolysis influences the development of a wide range of chemistry. Photolytic bond homolysis and its reverse process have been observed directly using time-resolved spectroscopy. However, direct observation of reversible bond homolysis remains elusive. Here, we report the direct observation of reversible Co–Co bond homolysis using two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance exchange spectroscopy (2D EXSY NMR). The characterization of species involved in this homolysis is firmly supported by diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY NMR). The unambiguous characterization of the Co–Co bond homolysis process enabled us to study ligand steric and electronic factors that influence the strength of the Co–Co bond. Understanding of these factors will contribute to rational design of multimetallic complexes with desired physical properties or catalytic activity.

Synthesis and reactivity of heteroleptic zinc(I) complexes toward heteroallenes

Heteroleptic zinc(I) complexes L^1,2Zn-ZnCp* (L¹ = HC[C(CF₃)NC₆F₅]₂1; L² = HC[C(Me)NDipp]₂; Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr₂C₆H₃2) are synthesized by reactions of Cp*₂Zn₂ with L¹H and L²ZnH. 2 reacts with t-BuNCO to give unprecedented carbamate complex (4), while reactions with RN₃ gave bis-hexazene, triazenide, and trimeric azide complexes (5-7).

A Study of NbMo and NbMo- by Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Photoelectron spectra of the niobium-molybdenum diatomic anion, obtained at 488 and 514 nm, display vibrationally resolved transitions from the ground state and one excited electronic state of the anion to the ground state and one excited electronic state of the neutral molecule. The electron affinity of NbMo is measured to be 1.130 ± 0.005 eV. Its ²Δ_3/2 spin-orbit component is observed to lie 870 ± 20 cm^-1 above its previously identified ²Δ_5/2 ground state. For ⁹³Nb⁹⁸Mo, vibrational energies measured for levels up to v = 4 for the ²Δ_5/2 and ²Δ_3/2 states give harmonic frequency and anharmonicity constant values of ω_e = 492 ± 12 cm^-1 and ω_ex_e = 8.0 ± 3.2 cm^-1, the former value corresponding to a force constant of 6.80 ± 0.35 mdyn/Å. These two vibrational parameters suggest a bond dissociation energy that is too low by at least a factor of 3, indicating that the ground state potential energy curve of NbMo deviates markedly from a Morse potential at higher energies. An excited electronic state of NbMo, assigned as a ²Σ⁺ state, is observed at 2900 ± 25 cm^-1 (T₀). Vibrational energies up to v = 8 in this excited state give values of ω_e = 544 ± 8 cm^-1 and ω_ex_e = 1.9 ± 1.2 cm^-1 for ⁹³Nb⁹⁸Mo. The former value corresponds to a high vibrational force constant of 8.30 ± 0.25 mdyn/Å. Both doublet states of the neutral molecule are accessed from the anion ground state, which is assigned as ¹Σ⁺. For the ⁹³Nb⁹⁸Mo^- anion, the fundamental vibrational frequency (ΔG_1/2) is 484 ± 15 cm^-1. Electron affinity data indicate that the bond dissociation energy of NbMo^- is 0.213 ± 0.005 eV greater than that of neutral NbMo, whose previously reported value then gives D₀ = 4.85 ± 0.27 eV for the anion. An excited state of the anion lying 3050 ± 25 cm^-1 (T₀) above its ground state is assigned as ³Δ, and the energies of its spin-orbit components above the ³Δ₃ lowest energy level are measured to be 450 ± 20 cm^-1 (³Δ₂) and 1100 ± 20 cm^-1 (³Δ₁). Their uneven spacing suggests that the energy of the ³Δ₂ level is lowered by interaction with a higher energy Ω = 2 anion state. The vibrational frequency (ΔG_1/2) for the ³Δ₁ and ³Δ₂ states is measured to be 433 ± 20 cm^-1. Bond length differences among the observed states are estimated from Franck-Condon fits to vibrational band intensity profiles. When combined with the previously reported NbMo bond length, these provide bond length estimates for the ground state of the anion (1.940 ± 0.025 Å) and for the observed excited states. These species offer extreme examples of multiple metal-metal bonding, with formal bond orders of 5¹/₂ for the ²Δ ground and ²Σ⁺ excited doublet states of NbMo, 6 for the singlet ground state of the anion, and 5 for its low-lying triplet state. The relationships among their bonding properties and those of related multiply bonded transition metal dimers are discussed.

Metal-to-Metal Distance Modulated Au(I)/Ru(II) Cyclophanyl Complexes: Cooperative Effects in Photoredox Catalysis

The modular synthesis of Au(I)/Ru(II) decorated mono- and heterobimetallic complexes with π-conjugated [2.2]paracyclophane is described. [2.2]Paracyclophane serves as a rigid spacer which holds the metal centers in precise spatial orientations and allows metal-to-metal distance modulation. A broad set of architectural arrangements of pseudo -geminal, -ortho, -meta, and -para substitution patterns were employed. Metal-to-metal distance modulation of Au(I)/Ru(II) heterobimetallic complexes and the innate transannular π-communication of the cyclophanyl scaffold provides a promising platform for the investigations of structure-activity relationship and cooperative effects. The Au(I)/Ru(II) heterobimetallic cyclophanyl complexes are stable, easily accessible, and exhibit promising catalytic activity in the visible-light promoted arylative Meyer-Schuster rearrangement.

Metal-to-Metal Distance Modulation by Ligand Design: A Case Study of Structure-Property Correlation in Planar Chiral Cyclophanyl Metal Complexes

Multinuclear metal complexes have seen tremendous progress in synthetic advances, their versatile structural features, and emerging applications. Here, we conceptualize Metal-to-Metal distance modulation in cyclophanyl metal complexes by bridging ligand design employing the co-facially stacked cyclophanyl-derived pseudo-geminal, -ortho, -meta, and -para constitutional isomers grafted with N-, O-, and P- containing chelates that allow the installation of diverse (hetero)metallic moieties in a distance-defined and spatially-oriented relation to one another. Metal-to-Metal distance modulation and innate transannular "through-space" π-π electronic interactions via the co-facially stacked benzene rings in cyclophanyl-derived complexes as well as their specific stereochemical structural features (element of planar chirality) are crucial factors that contribute to the tuning of structure-property relationships, which stand at the very center from the perspective of cooperative effects in catalysis as well as emerging material applications.

Comparing Isoelectronic, Quadruple-Bonded Metalloporphyrin and Metallocorrole Dimers: Scalar-Relativistic DFT Calculations Predict a >1 eV Range for Ionization Potential and Electron Affinity

A scalar-relativistic DFT study of isoelectronic, quadruple-bonded Group 6 metalloporphyrins (M = Mo, W) and Group 7 metallocorroles (M = Tc, Re) has uncovered dramatic differences in ionization potential (IP) and electron affinity (EA) among the compounds. Thus, both the IPs and EAs of the corrole derivatives are 1 eV or more higher than those of the porphyrin derivatives. These differences largely reflect the much lower orbital energies of the δ- and δ*-orbitals of the corrole dimers relative to those of the porphyrin dimers, which in turn reflect the higher (+III as opposed to +II) oxidation states of the metals in the former compounds. Significant differences have also been determined between Mo and W porphyrin dimers and between Tc and Re corrole dimers. These differences are thought to largely reflect greater relativistic destabilization of the 5d orbitals of W and Re relative to the 4d orbitals of Mo and Tc. The calculated differences in IP and EA should translate to major differences in electrochemical redox potentials-a prediction that in our opinion is well worth confirming.

Lantern-Type Divanadium Complexes with Bridging Ligands: Short Metal-Metal Bonds with High Multiple Bond Orders

Vanadium forms binuclear complexes with a variety of ligands often containing V≡V triple bonds. Many tetragonal divanadium paddlewheel complexes with bridging bidentate ligands have been experimentally characterized. This research exhaustively treats model tetragonal, trigonal, and digonal paddlewheel-type divanadium complexes V₂ L_x (L=formamidinate, guanidinate, and carboxylate; x=2, 3, 4), each in the three lowest-energy spin states. The V-V formal bond orders are obtained from metal-metal MO diagrams for representative structures. A number of short V-V multiple bonds of order 3, 3.5, and 4 are found in these model complexes. The short V≡V triple bonds and singlet ground state predicted here for the model tetragonal complexes correspond well with the limited experimental results for the series of known tetragonal paddlewheels. Digonal divanadium lanterns with very short V-V quadruple bonds are predicted as interesting synthetic targets. The V-V bond distances are categorized into distinct ranges according to the formal bond order values from 0.5 to 4. These bond length ranges are compared with the ranges compiled for other divanadium complexes including carbonyl complexes.

Variational Energy Decomposition Analysis of Charge-Transfer Interactions between Metals and Ligands in Carbonyl Complexes

Variational energy decomposition analyses have been presented to quantify the σ-dative, ligand-to-metal forward charge transfer (CT) and the π-conjugative, metal-to-ligand backward charge delocalization on a series of isolelectronic transition-metal carbonyl complexes M(CO)₆, including M = Ti^2-, V^-, Cr, Mn⁺, and Fe²⁺. Although the qualitative features of these energy terms are understood, well-defined quantitative studies have been scarce. Consistent with early findings, electrostatic and Pauli exchange effects play a key role in σ-donation, resulting in blue shifts in ligand vibrational frequency in the complex geometries. Excluding chemical bonding interactions between the CO ligand and the metal fragments in the energy decomposition analysis, we found that loosely bound electrostatic complexes can be formed at a longer metal-to-ligand distance due to the exponential decay of Pauli exchange. In all complexes, the overall binding stabilization can be attributed to CT effects, with opposing trends between σ-donation and π-back bonding that follows an order of Ti^2- (4.4) > V^1- (2.6) > Cr (1.5) > Mn¹⁺ (1.1) > Fe²⁺ (0.5) in π-to-σ CT ratio. These electronic and energetic features are mirrored in the vibrational frequency shifts induced by different factors. The present investigation may help stimulate the use of energy decomposition techniques to understand the structure and activity of metallocatalysts using density functional theory.

Dirhodium(II)/Xantphos-Catalyzed Relay Carbene Insertion and Allylic Alkylation Process: Reaction Development and Mechanistic Insights

Although dirhodium-catalyzed multicomponent reactions of diazo compounds, nucleophiles and electrophiles have achieved great advance in organic synthesis, the introduction of allylic moiety as the third component via allylic metal intermediate remains a formidable challenge in this area. Herein, an attractive three-component reaction of readily accessible amines, diazo compounds, and allylic compounds enabled by a novel dirhodium(II)/Xantphos catalysis is disclosed, affording various architecturally complex and functionally diverse α-quaternary α-amino acid derivatives in good yields with high atom and step economy. Mechanistic studies indicate that the transformation is achieved through a relay dirhodium(II)-catalyzed carbene insertion and allylic alkylation process, in which the catalytic properties of dirhodium are effectively modified by the coordination with Xantphos, leading to good activity in the catalytic allylic alkylation process.

Unsupported Lanthanide-Transition Metal Bonds: Ionic vs Polar Covalent?

Lanthanide-transition metal complexes continue to be of interest, not only because of their synthetic challenge but also of their promising magnetic properties. Computational work examining the chemical bonding between lanthanides and transition metals in PyCp₂Ln-TMCp(CO)₂ (DyPyCp₂^2- = [2,6-(CH₂C₅H₃)₂C₅H₃N]^2-) reveals strong Ln-TM dative bonds. Gas-phase optimized geometries are in good agreement with experimental structures at the density functional theory (DFT) level with large-core pseudopotentials. From La to Lu, there is a small increase in the bond dissociation energy, as well as a decrease in Ln-Fe bond lengths. Energy decomposition analyses attribute this trend to an increase in the electrostatic contribution from the decreasing bond length and a modest increase in the orbital contribution. The natural bond orbital analysis clearly indicates that 3d⁶ "lone pairs" in the [FeCp(CO)₂]^- fragment act as a Lewis bases donating nearly 0.5 electron to Ln virtual orbitals of mainly d character. The interfragment bonding was also quantified by the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, which indicates that the Ln-Fe bond is more covalent than the Ca-Fe bond in the hypothetical CpCa-FeCp(CO)₂ but less covalent than the Zn-Fe bond in the hypothetical CpZn-FeCp(CO)₂. Further comparisons suggest that to the [PyCp₂Ln]⁺ cation the [FeCp(CO)₂]^- anion appears much like a halide. Overall, these Ln-TM dative bonds appear to have strong electrostatic contributions as well as significant orbital mixing and dispersion contributions.

Transition Metal Chain Complexes Supported by Soft Donor Assembling Ligands

The chemistry of discrete molecular chains constituted by metals in low oxidation states, displaying metal-metal proximity and stabilized by suitable metal-bridging, assembling ligands comprising at least one soft donor atom is comprehensively reviewed; complexes with a single (hard or soft) bridging atom (e.g., μ-halide, μ-sulfide, or μ-PR₂ etc.) as well as "closed" metal arrays (that fall in the realm of cluster chemistry) are excluded. The focus is on transition metal-based systems, with few excursions to cases combining transition and post-transition elements. Most relevant supporting ligands have neutral C, P, O, or S donor (mainly, N-heterocyclic carbene, phosphine, ether, thioether) or anionic donor (mainly phenyl, ylide, silyl, phosphide, thiolate) groups. A supporting-ligand-based classification of the metal chains is introduced, using as the classifying parameter the number of "bites" (i.e., ligand bridges) subtending each intermetallic separation. The ligands are further grouped according to the number of donor atoms interacting with the metal chain (called denticity in the following) and the column of the Periodic Table to which the set of donor atoms belongs (in ascending order). A complementary metal-based compilation of the complexes discussed is also provided in a concise tabular form.

Asymmetric Solvation of the Zinc Dimer Cation Revealed by Infrared Multiple Photon Dissociation Spectroscopy of Zn2+(H2O)n (n = 1-20)

Investigating metal-ion solvation—in particular, the fundamental binding interactions—enhances the understanding of many processes, including hydrogen production via catalysis at metal centers and metal corrosion. Infrared spectra of the hydrated zinc dimer (Zn₂⁺(H₂O)_n; n = 1–20) were measured in the O–H stretching region, using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy. These spectra were then compared with those calculated by using density functional theory. For all cluster sizes, calculated structures adopting asymmetric solvation to one Zn atom in the dimer were found to lie lower in energy than structures adopting symmetric solvation to both Zn atoms. Combining experiment and theory, the spectra show that water molecules preferentially bind to one Zn atom, adopting water binding motifs similar to the Zn⁺(H₂O)_n complexes studied previously. A lower coordination number of 2 was observed for Zn₂⁺(H₂O)₃, evident from the highly red-shifted band in the hydrogen bonding region. Photodissociation leading to loss of a neutral Zn atom was observed only for n = 3, attributed to a particularly low calculated Zn binding energy for this cluster size.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bidentate Isonitrile Iron Complexes

The divalent iron complexes trans-[FeBr₂(BINC)₂], [Cp*FeCl(BINC)] (Cp* = Me₅C₅), and [FeBr₂(CNAr₃NC)₂] with the chelating bis(isonitrile) ligands BINC (bis(2-isocyanophenyl)phenylphosphonate) and CNAr₃NC (2,2″-diisocyano-3,5,3″,5"tetramethyl-1,1':3',1″-terphenyl) have been prepared and characterized. Their subsequent reduction yields the di- and trinuclear compounds [Fe₃(BINC)₆], [Cp*Fe(BINC)]₂, [Fe(CNAr₃NC)₂]₂, and [K(Et₂O)]₂[Fe(CNAr₃NC)₂]₂. The molecular structures of all new species were determined by X-ray crystallography and compared to those of related iron carbonyl complexes, demonstrating that the bidentate isonitrile ligands are capable surrogates for two CO ligands with only minimal distortion of the tetrahedral or octahedral geometry of the parent complexes. The complexes were further characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, and the electrochemical properties of selected compounds were analyzed by UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry.
