Study of Emissions from Domestic Solid-Fuel Stove Combustion in Ireland

Moss-bag technique as an approach to monitor elemental concentration indoors

The moss-bag technique has been used for many decades to monitor outdoor pollution. More recently, however, the method has been used to monitor indoor air pollution (IAP), as humans spend the majority of their time indoors. The purpose of the research conducted was to evaluate indoor air pollution using active moss biomonitoring. Pleurozium schreberi moss bags were exposed for two seasons (summer and winter), hanging over tile stoves and coal stoves. The selected elements: Al, Cu, Cd, Co, Pb, Zn, V, Ba, Cr, Fe, Mn, Sr, P, Ni, and S were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and, for Hg, by a direct mercury analyzer. The study found the exposure season affected the concentrations of selected elements in 62.5% of cases, and their source was identified. The average concentrations of Co, Ba, Cr, and Sr were higher, and statistically significant, in winter, after a 12-week exposure period of the mosses, regardless of the type of heating or cooking stove owned. The higher phosphorus concentrations obtained in summer indicate physiological stress caused by unfavorable winter exposure conditions. In the future, the number of species used to assess indoor air pollution should be increased and the range of pollutants expanded, along with the identification of their sources, taking residents' lifestyles into account.

Accurate particulate matter emission measurements from biomass combustion: A holistic evaluation of full and partial flow dilution systems

Accurately measuring particulate matter emissions from biomass combustion is crucial for evaluating the performance of fuels, combustion appliances and flue gas cleaning methods. These measurements are essential for refining emission inventories for health risk assessments and environmental models and for defining pollution control strategies. However, as air quality standards become increasingly stringent and emission levels decrease, it is important to develop reliable, accurate measurement methods. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of two particulate dilution systems, namely a full flow dilution (FFD) tunnel and a two-stage partial flow dilution system (porous tube diluter combined with ejector diluter, PTD + ED), for characterising the particle number size distribution from a wood pellet boiler. The maximum relative sampling errors due to not sampling isokinetically increase with particle size and dilution ratio (DR), but are less than 1% for particles smaller than 1 μm for both systems. The total particle number concentration with FFD is on average 35% lower than with PTD + ED, which suggests substantial particle loss during FFD. In addition with FFD, a strong negative correlation is observed between DR and the average particle size. On the other hand with PTD + ED, both the dilution air temperature and DR have no substantial influence on the particle number emissions. However, it is observed with both systems that the particle distribution is affected by coagulation, and this effect becomes more pronounced as dilution decreases. Overall, this work provides insights into the strengths and limitations of particulate dilution systems for accurately measuring emissions from biomass combustion, which can support the development of more reliable measurement methods and assist in implementing effective pollution control strategies.

Seasonality of Aerosol Sources Calls for Distinct Air Quality Mitigation Strategies

An Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) was deployed to investigate the temporal variability of non-refractory particulate matter (NR-PM₁) in the coastal city of Galway, Ireland, from February to July 2016. Source apportionment of the organic aerosol (OA) was performed using the newly developed rolling PMF strategy and was compared with the conventional seasonal PMF. Primary OA (POA) factors apportioned by rolling and seasonal PMF were similar. POA factors of hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), peat, wood, and coal were associated with domestic heating, and with an increased contribution to the OA mass in winter. Even in summer, sporadic heating events occurred with similar diurnal patterns to that in winter. Two oxygenated OA (OOA) factors were resolved, including more-oxygenated OOA and less-oxygenated OOA (i.e., MO-OOA and LO-OOA, accordingly) which were found to be the dominant OA factors during summer. On average, MO-OOA accounted for 62% of OA and was associated with long-range transport in summer. In summer, compared to rolling PMF, the conventional seasonal PMF over-estimated LO-OOA by nearly 100% while it underestimated MO-OOA by 30%. The results from this study show residential heating and long-range transport alternately dominate the submicron aerosol concentrations in this coastal city, requiring different mitigation strategies in different seasons.

Saccharides Emissions from Biomass and Coal Burning in Northwest China and Their Application in Source Contribution Estimation

Saccharides are important tracers in aerosol source identification but results in different areas varied significantly. In this study, six saccharides (levoglucosan, arabitol, glucose, mannitol, inositol, and sucrose) were determined for their emission factors and diagnostic ratios from domestic combustion of typical biomass and coal fuels in Northwest China. Three types of coal (i.e., anthracitic coal, bituminous coal, and briquettes) and five types of biomass (i.e., maize straw, wheat straw, corn cob, wood branches, and wood block) collected from regional rural areas were selected. Overall, the ranking of the fuel types in terms of the emission factor of particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) was coal < firewood fuel < straw fuel, with a range of 0.14–36.70 g/kg. Furthermore, the emission factor (e.g., organic carbon (OC) levels) of traditional stove-Heated Kang in the Guanzhong Plain differed significantly from that of wood stoves burning the same fuel, which is attributable to differences in the combustion conditions. The combined diagnostic ratios of levoglucosan (LG)/OC and arabitol/elemental carbon can be used to accurately distinguish the source contribution from coal and biomass combustion to atmospheric PM. Estimation of the biomass burning (BB) contribution to PM2.5 had an uncertainty of −2.7% to 41.0% and overestimation of 9.9–28.2% when LG was used as the sole tracer, despite its widespread use in other studies; thus, these estimation methods are inadequate and require improvement. The results also revealed that specialized emission control and clean energy strategies are required for both residential BB and non-BB sources on a regional scale.
