Production of Reactive Oxygen Species by the Reaction of Periodate and Hydroxylamine for Rapid Removal of Organic Pollutants and Waterborne Bacteria

Hydroxylamine-induced activation of permanganate for enhanced oxidation of sulfamethoxazole: Mechanism and products

Recently, many reagents have been introduced to accelerate the formation of highly reactive intermediate Mn species from permanganate (KMnO4), thereby improving the oxidation activity of KMnO4 towards pollutants. However, most studies have mainly focused on sulfur-containing reducing agents (e.g., bisulfite and sodium sulfite), with little attention paid to nitrogen-containing reducing agents. This study found that hydroxylamine (HA) and hydroxylamine derivatives (HAs) can facilitate KMnO4 in pollutant removal. Taking sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as a target contaminant, the effect of pH, SMX concentration, KMnO4 and HA dosages, and the molar ratio of HA and KMnO4 on the degradation of SMX in the KMnO4/HA process was systematically investigated. Quenching experiments and probe analysis revealed MnO2-catalyzed KMnO4 oxidation, Mn(III) and reactive nitrogen species as the primary active species responsible for SMX oxidation in the KMnO4/HA system. Proposed transformation pathways of SMX in the KMnO4/HA system mainly involve hydroxylation and cleavage reactions. The KMnO4/HA system was more conducive to selective oxidation of SMX, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and several other pollutants, but reluctant to bisphenol S (BPS). Overall, this study proposed an effective system for eliminating pollutants, while providing mechanistic insight into HA-driven KMnO4 activation for environmental remediation.

Natural pyrite and ascorbic acid co-enhance periodate activation for inactivation of antibiotic resistant bacteria and inhibition of resistance genes transmission: A green disinfection process dominated by singlet oxygen

The transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the propagation of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) threaten public health security and human health, and greener and more efficient disinfection technologies are expected to be discovered for wastewater treatment. In this study, natural pyrite and ascorbic acid (AA) were proposed as environmental-friendly activator and reductant for periodate (PI) activation to inactivate ARB. The disinfection treatment of PI/pyrite/AA system could inactivate 5.62 log ARB within 30 min, and the lower pH and higher PI and natural pyrite dosage could further boost the disinfection efficiency. The 1O2 and SO4•- were demonstrated to be crucial for the inactivation of ARB in PI/pyrite/AA system. The disinfection process destroyed the morphological structure of ARB, inducing oxidative stress and stimulating the antioxidant system. The PI/pyrite/AA system effectively reduced the intracellular and extracellular DNA concentration and ARGs abundance, inhibiting the propagation of ARGs. The presence of AA facilitated the activation of PI with natural pyrite and significantly increased the concentration of Fe2+ in solution. The reusability of natural pyrite, the safety of the disinfection by-products and the inhibition of ARB regeneration indicated the application potential of PI/pyrite/AA system in wastewater disinfection.

Matching periodate peak absorbance by far UVC at 222 nm promotes the degradation of micropollutants and energy efficiency

Periodate (PI)-based advanced oxidation processes have gained increasing interest. This study for the first time elevates the light-activation capacity of PI by using far UVC at 222 nm (UV222/PI) without extra chemical inputs. The effectiveness and the underlying mechanisms of UV222/PI for the remediation of micropollutants were studied by selecting atenolol (ATL) as a representative. PI possessed a high molar absorption coefficient of 9480-6120 M-1 cm-1 at 222 nm in the pH range of 5.0-9.0, and it was rapidly decomposed by UV222 with first-order rate constants of 0.0055 to 0.002 s-1. ATL and the six other organic compounds were effectively degraded by the UV222/PI process under different conditions with the fluence-based rate constants generally two to hundred times higher than by UVA photolysis. Hydroxyl radical and ozone were confirmed as the major contributors to ATL degradation, while direct photolysis also played a role at higher pH or lower PI dosages. Degradation pathways of ATL were proposed including hydroxylation, demethylation, and oxidation. The high energy efficiency of the UV222/PI process was also confirmed. This study provides a cost-effective and convenient approach to enhance PI light-response activity for the treatment of micropollutants.

Iron coupled with hydroxylamine turns on the "switch" for free radical degradation of organic pollutants under high pH conditions

Reducing iron by hydroxylamine (HA) can promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the Fenton reaction and play a crucial role in the degradation of organic pollutants. However, the performance of this system at wider environmental thresholds is still not sufficiently understood, especially in the highly alkaline environments resulting from human activities. Here, we assessed the impact of solution pH on organic pollutant degradation by goethite with the addition of HA and H2O2. The solid phase variation and ROS generation were analyzed using Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. This study found that under alkaline conditions, the system can continuously scavenge organic pollutants through oxygen-mediated generation of free radicals. At lower pH levels, organic pollutant decomposition, exemplified by the breakdown of bisphenol A (BPA), is primarily driven by the Fenton reaction facilitated by iron. As pH increases, hydroxyl radical (•OH) production decreases, accompanied by decreased BPA removal efficiency. However, the removal efficiency of BPA increased significantly at pH > 9. At pH 12, the removal of BPA exceeded that of the acidic condition after one hour, which is consistent with observations in soil system studies. Unlike the Fenton reaction, which is not sensitive to oxygen content, the removal of BPA under alkaline conditions occurs only under aerobic conditions. H2O2 is hardly involved in the reaction, and the depletion of HA becomes a critical factor in the decomposition of BPA. Importantly, in contrast to acidic conditions, where the dramatic decomposition of BPA occurs mainly in the first 10 min, the decomposition of BPA under alkaline conditions continued to occur over the 2 h of observation until complete removal. For natural systems, the remediation of pollutants depends more on the active time of ROS than on their reactivity. Therefore, this idea can reference pollution remediation strategies in anthropogenically disturbed environments.

Direct Electron Transfer-Driven Nontoxic Oligomeric Deposition of Sulfonamide Antibiotics onto Carbon Materials for In Situ Water Remediation

The rising in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technologies based on polymerization reactions have advanced the removal of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. However, despite their promise, uncertainties persist regarding their effectiveness in eliminating structurally complex contaminants, such as sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). This study elucidated that oligomerization, rather than mineralization, predominantly governs the removal of SAs in the carbon materials/periodate system. The amine groups in SAs played a crucial role in forming organic radicals and subsequent coupling reactions due to their high f- index and low bond orders. Moreover, the study highlighted the robust adhesion of oligomers to the catalyst surface, facilitated by enhanced van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions. Importantly, plant and animal toxicity assessments confirmed the nontoxic nature of oligomers deposited on the carbon material surface, affirming the efficacy of carbon material-based ISCO in treating contaminated surface water and groundwater. Additionally, a novel classification approach, Δlog k, was proposed to differentiate SAs based on their kinetic control steps, providing deeper insights into the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) and facilitating the selection of optimal descriptors during the oligomerization processes. Overall, these insights significantly enhance our understanding of SAs removal via oligomerization and demonstrate the superiority of C-ISCO based on polymerization in water decontamination.

Homogenous Oxidizing Oligomerization Coupled with Coagulation for Water Purification

Natural manganese oxides could induce the intermolecular coupling reactions among small-molecule organics in aqueous environments, which is one of the fundamental processes contributing to natural humification. These processes could be simulated to design novel advanced oxidation technology for water purification. In this study, periodate (PI) was selected as the supplementary electron-acceptor for colloidal manganese oxides (Mn(IV)aq) to remove phenolic contaminants from water. By introducing polyferric sulfate (PFS) into the Mn(IV)aq/PI system and exploiting the flocculation potential of Mn(IV)aq, a post-coagulation process was triggered to eliminate soluble manganese after oxidation. Under acidic conditions, periodate exists in the H4IO6- form as an octahedral oxyacid capable of coordinating with Mn(IV)aq to form bidentate complexes or oligomers (Mn(IV)-PI*) as reactive oxidants. The Mn(IV)-PI* complex could induce cross-coupling process between phenolic contaminants, resulting in the formation of oligomerized products ranging from dimers to hexamers. These oligomerized products participate in the coagulation process and become stored within the nascent floc due to their catenulate nature and strong hydrophobicity. Through coordination between Mn(IV)aq and H4IO6-, residual periodate is firmly connected with manganese oxides in the floc after coagulation and could be simultaneously separated from the aqueous phase. This study achieves oxidizing oligomerization through a homogeneous process under mild conditions without additional energy input or heterogeneous catalyst preparation. Compared to traditional mineralization-driven oxidation techniques, the proposed novel cascade processes realize transformation, convergence, and separation of phenolic contaminants with high oxidant utilization efficiency for low-carbon purification.

Exploration of the Existence Forms and Patterns of Dissolved Oxygen Molecules in Water

The structure of liquid water is primarily composed of three-dimensional networks of water clusters formed by hydrogen bonds, and dissolved oxygen is one of the most important indicators for assessing water quality. In this work, distilled water with different concentration of dissolved oxygen were prepared, and a clear negative correlation between the size of water clusters and dissolved oxygen concentration was observed. Besides, a phenomenon of rapid absorption and release of oxygen at the water interfaces was unveiled, suggesting that oxygen molecules predominantly exist at the interfaces of water clusters. Oxygen molecules can move rapidly through the interfaces among water clusters, allowing dissolved oxygen to quickly reach a saturation level at certain partial pressure of oxygen and temperature. Further exploration into the mechanism by molecular dynamics simulations of oxygen and water clusters found that oxygen molecules can only exist stably at the interfaces among water clusters. A semi-empirical formula relating the average number of water molecules in a cluster (n) to 17O NMR half-peak width (W) was summarized: n = 0.1 W + 0.85. These findings provide a foundation for exploring the structure and properties of water.

The synergistic effect of periodate/ferrate (VI) system on disinfection of antibiotic resistant bacteria and removal of antibiotic resistant genes: The dominance of Fe (IV)/Fe (V)

The proliferation of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) caused by antibiotic abuse has raised concerns about the global infectious-disease crisis. This study employed periodate (PI)/ferrate (VI) (Fe (VI)) system to disinfect Gram-negative ARB (Escherichia coli DH5α) and Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633). The PI/Fe (VI) system could inactivate 1 × 108 CFU/mL of Gram-negative ARB and Gram-positive bacteria by 4.0 and 2.8 log in 30 min. Neutral and acidic pH, increase of PI dosage and Fe (VI) dosage had positive impacts on the inactivation efficiency of ARB, while alkaline solution and the coexistence of 10 mM Cl-, NO3-, SO42- and 20 mg/L humic acid had slightly negative impacts. The reactive species generated by PI/Fe (VI) system could disrupt the integrity of cell membrane and wall, leading to oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. Intracellular hereditary substance, including DNA and ARGs (tetA), would leak into the external environment through damaged cells and be degraded. The electron spin resonance analysis and quenching experiments indicated that Fe (IV)/Fe (V) played a leading role in disinfection. Meanwhile, PI/Fe (VI) system also had an efficient removal effect on sulfadiazine, which was expected to inhibit the ARGs transmission from the source.

Finely-Tuning Chemiluminescent Color of CdTe Nanocrystals and Its Application for Near-Infrared Semi-Automatic Immunoassay

Chemiluminescence (CL), especially commercialized CL immunoassay (CLIA), is normally performed within the eye-visible region of the spectrum by exploiting the electronic-transition-related emission of the molecule luminophore. Herein, dual-stabilizers-capped CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) is employed as a model of nanoparticulated luminophore to finely tune the CL color with superior color purity. Initialized by oxidizing the CdTe NCs with potassium periodate (KIO4), intermediates of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) tend to charge CdTe NCs in both series-connection and parallel-connection routes and dominate the charge-transfer CL of CdTe NCs. The CdTe NCs/KIO4 system can exhibit color-tunable CL with the maximum emission wavelength shifted from 694 nm to 801 nm, and the red-shift span is over 100 nm. Both PL and CL of each of the CdTe NCs are bandgap-engineered; the change in the NCs surface state via CL reaction enables CL of each of the CdTe NCs to be red-shifted for ∼20 nm to PL, while the change in the NCs surface state via labeling CdTe NCs to secondary-antibody (Ab2) enables CL of the CdTe NCs-Ab2 conjugates to be red-shifted for another ∼20 nm to bare CdTe NCs. The CL of CdTe753-Ab2/KIO4 is ∼791 nm, which can perform near-infrared CL immunoassay and semi-automatically determined procalcitonin (PCT) on commercialized in vitro diagnosis (IVD) instruments.

Non-radical activation of low additive periodate by carbon-doped boron nitride for acetaminophen degradation: Significance of high-potential metastable intermediates

Metal-free environmental-friendly and cost-effective catalysts for periodate (PI) activation are crucial to popularize their application for micropollutant removal in water. Herein, we report that carbon-doped boron nitride (C-BN) can efficiently activate PI to degrade acetaminophen under very low oxidant doses (40 μM) and over a relatively wide pH range (3-9). As expected, the significant reduction in periodate addition is likely to be due to the higher chemical utilization efficiency achieved by a non-radical oxidation pathway. This involved two main mechanisms, the electron transfer process mediated by the high-potential metastable C-BN-900-PI* complex and singlet oxygen. In this case, the CO groups and defects on the C-BN surface were identified as key active sites for PI activation. Notably, the prepared C-BN-900 had good cycling performance and the degradation efficiency is recovered after simple annealing. The existence of HCO3- and HA significantly inhibited the reaction, whereas Cl-, SO42-, and NO3- had little effect on the degradation of ACE. Overall, this study provides a new alternative method to regulate the non-radical pathway of boron nitride/periodate system.

Sustainable bioelectric activation of periodate for highly efficient micropollutant abatement

The periodate (PI)-based advanced oxidation process is valued for environmental remediation, but current activation methods involve high costs, secondary contamination risks, and limited applicability due to external energy inputs (e.g., UV), catalyst incorporation (e.g., Fe2+), or environmental modifications (e.g., freezing). In this work, novel bioelectric activation of PI using the electrons generated by electroactive bacteria was developed and investigated for rapid removal of carbamazepine (CBZ), achieving 100 %, 100 %, and 76 % removal efficiency for 4.22 µM of CBZ in 20 min at pH 2, 120 min at pH 6.4, and HRT of 30 min at pH 8.5, respectively, with a 1 mM PI dose and without an input voltage. It was deduced that electrons derived from bacteria could directly activate PI using Ti mesh electrodes and generate •IO3 via single electron transfer under strongly acidic conditions (e.g., pH 2). Nevertheless, under weak alkaline conditions (e.g., pH 8.5), biogenic electrons indirectly activated PI by generating OH-via 4e-reduction at the Ti mesh cathode, resulting in the formation of •O2- and 1O2. In addition to the metal cathode, a carbon-based cathode finely modulates the 2e-reduction, yielding H2O2 and activating PI to mainly form •OH. Moreover, primarily non-toxic IO3- was produced during treatment, while no detectable reactive iodine species (HOI, I2, and I3-) were observed. Furthermore, the bioelectric activation of PI demonstrated its capability to remove various micropollutants present in secondary-treated municipal wastewater, showcasing its broad-spectrum degradation ability. This study introduces a novel, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly PI activation technique with promising applicability for micropollutant elimination in water treatment.

Activation of periodate by biocarbon-supported multiple modified nanoscale iron for the degradation of bisphenol A in high-temperature aqueous solution

As reported, the persistent toxic and harmful pollutant bisphenol A (BPA) from industrial emissions has been consistently found in aquatic environments inhabited by humans. Periodate (PI)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been employed to degrade BPA, although activating PI proves more challenging compared to other oxidants. A novel nano iron metal catalyst, sulfided nanoscale iron-nickel bimetallic nanoparticle supported on biocarbon (S-(nFe0-Ni)/BC) was synthesized and utilized to activate PI for the removal of BPA. The morphology, structure, and composition of S-(nFe0-Ni)/BC were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and fourier-transform infrared spectrum (FTIR). The catalyst demonstrates an excellent ability to activate PI, achieving a BPA removal efficacy of 86.4%, accompanied by a 33% reduction in total organic carbon (TOC) in the {S-(nFe0-Ni)/BC}/PI system. BPA degradation exhibited a significant change at the 5-min mark. In the first stage (0-5 min), nonlinear dynamic fitting research, combined with scavenging experiments, unveiled the competitive degradation of pollutants primarily driven by iodate radical ( IO 3 · ), singlet oxygen1 O 2 , and hydroxyl radical ( · OH ). The competitive dynamics aligned with the ExpAssoc model. The contribution rates of different active species during the second stage (5-120 min) were calculated. The contributions of main species to BPA removal follow the order of IO 3 · >1 O 2 > · OH throughout the entire process. The influence of various parameters, such as the dosage of S-(nFe0-Ni)/BC, initial PI concentration, BPA concentration, pH, temperature, and the presence of coexisting anions, was also examined. Finally, a plausible reaction mechanism in the system is proposed, suggesting that the {S-(nFe0-Ni)/BC}/PI system involves a heterogeneous synergistic reaction occurring primarily on the surface of S-(nFe0-Ni)/BC. Therefore, this study proposes a promising approach for PI-based AOPs to degrade organic pollutants, aiming to mitigate the irreversible harm caused by such pollutants to organisms and the environment.

Highlights in Interface of Wastewater Treatment by Utilizing Metal Organic Frameworks: Purification and Adsorption Kinetics

Polluted water has become a concern for the scientific community as it causes many severe threats to living beings. Detection or removal of contaminants present in wastewater and attaining purity of water that can be used for various purposes are a primary responsibility. Different treatment methods have already been used for the purification of sewage. There is a need for low-cost, highly selective, and reusable materials that can efficiently remove pollutants or purify contaminated water. In this regard, MOFs have shown significant potential for applications such as supercapacitors, drug delivery, gas storage, pollutant adsorption, etc. The outstanding structural diversity, substantial surface areas, and adjustable pore sizes of MOFs make them superior candidates for wastewater treatment. This Review provides an overview of the interaction science and engineering (kinetic and thermodynamic aspects with interactions) underpinning MOFs for water purification. First, fundamental strategies for the synthesis methods of MOFs, different categories, and their applicability in wastewater treatment are summarized, followed by a detailed explanation of various interaction mechanisms. Finally, current challenges and future outlooks for research on MOF materials toward the adsorption of hazardous components are discussed. A new avenue for modifying their structural characteristics for the adsorption and separation of hazardous materials, which will undoubtedly direct future work, is also summarized.

o-Semiquinone Radical and o-Benzoquinone Selectively Degrade Aniline Contaminants in the Periodate-Mediated Advanced Oxidation Process

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) often employ strong oxidizing inorganic radicals (e.g., hydroxyl and sulfate radicals) to oxidize contaminants in water treatment. However, the water matrix could scavenge the strong oxidizing radicals, significantly deteriorating the treatment efficiency. Here, we report a periodate/catechol process in which reactive quinone species (RQS) including the o-semiquinone radical (o-SQ•-) and o-benzoquinone (o-Q) were dominant to effectively degrade anilines within 60 s. The second-order reaction rate constants of o-SQ•- and o-Q with aniline were determined to be 1.0 × 108 and 4.0 × 103 M-1 s-1, respectively, at pH 7.0, which accounted for 21% and 79% of the degradation of aniline with a periodate-to-catechol molar ratio of 1:1. The major byproducts were generated via addition or polymerization. The RQS-based process exhibited excellent anti-interference performance in the degradation of aniline-containing contaminants in real water samples in the presence of diverse inorganic ions and organics. Subsequently, we extended the RQS-based process by employing tea extract and dissolved organic matter as catechol replacements as well as metal ions [e.g., Fe(III) or Cu(II)] as periodate replacements, which also exhibited good performance in aniline degradation. This study provides a novel strategy to develop RQS-based AOPs for the highly selective degradation of aniline-containing emerging contaminants.

Fe(IV)/Fe(V)-mediated polyferric sulfate/periodate system: A novel coagulant/oxidant strategy in promoting micropollutant abatement

Strategic modulation of the advanced oxidation processes for the selective oxidation of micropollutants has attracted accumulating attention in water decontamination. This study first reported the combination of the coagulant polyferric sulfate (PFS) and oxidant periodate (PI) to accomplish synergistic abatement of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The oxidizing performance of SMX by this system was almost unaffected by coexisting water constituents, indicating the great promise of selective oxidation. Different from the current hydroxyl radicals (•OH)-mediated coagulant/oxidant systems (e.g., PFS/H2O2 and PFS/ozone), the dominance of high-valent Fe(IV)/Fe(V) intermediates was unambiguously verified in the PFS/PI treatment. The PFS colloids before and after the oxidation were characterized and the iron speciation was analyzed. The transformation of monomeric iron configurations (Fe(a)) to oligomeric iron configurations (Fe(b)) could maintain the homeostasis of surface-bound Fe(III) and Fe(II). The interaction mechanisms included the production of reactive species and dynamic reaction equilibrium for micropollutant degradation. Finally, the transformation pathways of SMX and carbamazepine (CMZ) in the PFS/PI system were postulated. Overall, this study provided a novel coagulant/oxidant strategy to achieve selective and sustainable water purification.

Thermo-activated periodate oxidation process for tetracycline degradation: Kinetics and byproducts transformation pathways

Periodate-based advanced oxidation processes have been diffusely practiced for pollutant decontamination. However, the thermo-activation of periodate process (heat/PI), an effective water pollution removal process, has been rarely discussed, and the degradation pathway of this heat/PI system requires investigation. In this work, tetracycline antibiotics were selected as the model micropollutant for the comprehensive evaluation of the heat/PI system. The heat/PI system exhibited good performance for tetracycline (TC) remediation with temperature increases. The principal reactive oxidative species in the heat/PI system was confirmed using quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance experiments. Further, the potential reactive sites in the TC were identified based on the density functional theory calculation. Based on the detection results of intermediates, there was no significant difference in byproducts generated during TC degradation under various temperatures in the heat/PI system. The Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.) method was applied to calculate the individual toxicity of the byproducts. This study contributes to a comprehensive explanation of the process of the thermal activation of periodate, and in particular, it explains the source of oxidation power, the transformation of byproducts, and the toxicity of reaction systems.

Ozone- and Hydroxyl Radical-Induced Degradation of Micropollutants in a Novel UVA-LED-Activated Periodate Advanced Oxidation Process

In this study, novel light emitting diode (LED)-activated periodate (PI) advanced oxidation process (AOP) at an irradiation wavelength in the ultraviolet A range (UVA, UVA-LED/PI AOP) was developed and investigated using naproxen (NPX) as a model micropollutant. The UVA-LED/PI AOP remarkably enhanced the degradation of NPX and seven other selected micropollutants with the observed pseudo-first-order rate constants ranging from 0.069 ± 0.001 to 4.50 ± 0.145 min-1 at pH 7.0, demonstrating a broad-spectrum micropollutant degradation ability. Lines of evidence from experimental analysis and kinetic modeling confirmed that hydroxyl radical (•OH) and ozone (O3) were the dominant species generated in UVA-LED/PI AOP, and they contributed evenly to NPX degradation. Increasing the pH and irradiation wavelength negatively affected NPX degradation, and this could be well explained by the decreased quantum yield (ΦPI) of PI. The degradation kinetics of NPX by the UVA-LED/PI AOP in the presence of water matrices (i.e., chloride, bicarbonate, and humic acid) and in real waters were examined, and the underlying mechanisms were illustrated. A total of nine transformation products were identified from NPX oxidation by the UVA-LED/PI AOP, mainly via hydroxylation, dealkylation, and oxidation pathways. The UVA-LED/PI AOP proposed might be a promising technology for the treatment of micropollutants in aqueous solutions. The pivotal role of ΦPI during light photolysis of PI may guide the future design of light-assisted PI AOPs.

The removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes by sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron activating periodate: Efficacy and mechanism

Antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have drawn much more attention due to their high risk on human health and ecosystem. In this study, the performance of sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI)/periodate (PI) system toward ARB inactivation and ARGs removal was systematically investigated. The S-nZVI/PI system could realize the complete inactivation of 1 × 108 CFU/mL kanamycin, ampicillin, and tetracycline-resistant E. coli HB101 within 40 min, meanwhile, possessed the ability to remove the intracellular ARGs (iARGs) (including aphA, tetA, and tnpA) carried by E. coli HB101. Specifically, the removal of aphA, tetA, and tnpA by S-nZVI/PI system after 40 min reaction was 0.31, 0.47, and 0.39 log10copies/mL, respectively. The reactive species attributed to the E. coli HB101 inactivation were HO• and O2•-, which could cause the destruction of E. coli HB101 morphology and enzyme system (such as superoxide dismutase and catalase), the loss of intracellular substances, and the damage of iARGs. Moreover, the influence of the dosage of PI and S-nZVI, the initial concentration of E. coli HB101, as well as the co-existing substance (such as HCO3-, NO3-, and humic acid (HA)) on the inactivation of E. coli HB101 and its corresponding iARGs removal was also conducted. It was found that the high dosage of PI and S-nZVI and the low concentration of E. coli HB101 could enhance the disinfection performance of S-nZVI/PI system. The presence of HCO3-, NO3-, and HA in S-nZVI/PI system showed inhibiting role on the inactivation of E. coli HB101 and its corresponding iARGs removal. Overall, this study demonstrates the superiority of S-nZVI/PI system toward ARB inactivation and ARGs removal.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Tracks Condition-Sensitive Water Radical Cation

Oxidizing species or radicals generated in water are of vital importance in catalysis, the environment, and biology. In addition to several related reactive oxygen species, using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), we present a nontrapping chemical transformation pathway to track water radical cation (H2O+•) species, whose formation is very sensitive to the conditioning environments, such as light irradiation, mechanical action, and gas/chemical introduction. We reveal that H2O+• can oxidize the 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) to the crucial epoxy hydroxylamine (HDMP=O) intermediate, which further reacts with the hydroxyl radical (•OH) for the formation of the EPR-active sextet radical (DMPO=O•). Interestingly, we uncover that H2O+• can react with dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP), 5-tert-butoxycarbonyl-5-methyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (BMPO), and α-phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) which contain a double-bond structure to produce corresponding derivatives as well. It is thus expected that both H2O+• and •OH are ubiquitous in nature and in various water-containing experimental systems. These findings provide a novel perspective on radicals for water redox chemistry.

Target-prepared sludge biochar-derived synergistic Mn and N/O induces high-performance periodate activation for reactive iodine radicals generation towards ofloxacin degradation

Converting waste activated sludge into catalysts for the removal of antibiotics in water fulfils the dual purpose of waste-to-resource and hazardous pollution elimination. In this study, sludge-derived biochar (SDB) for efficient periodate (PI) activation was first prepared via one-step pyrolysis of potassium permanganate-polyhexamethylenebiguanide conditioned sludge without additional modification. The SDB (750 °C)-PI system degraded 100% ofloxacin (OFL, 41.5 μM) within 6 min and was almost undisturbed by inorganic ions or humic acids. The experimental results confirmed that the predominant role of reactive iodine species (RIS) and the auxiliary involvement of singlet oxygen (1O2) jointly contributed to the OFL degradation. Theoretical calculations further indicated that the synergy between Mn and N/O induced local charge redistribution and improved electron transfer capability of SDB, leading to the formation of electron-rich Mn sites and enhanced Mn(II)↔Mn(III)↔Mn(IV) redox to promote PI activation. More importantly, the enhanced adsorption and charge transfer of PI on the Mn site of the Mn-N/O-C structures induced the I-O bond stretching and the rapid generation of RIS. This study offered a cost-effective strategy for developing SDB-based catalysts, further advancing the comprehension of sludge management and the intricate mechanisms underlying RIS formation in PI-advanced oxidation processes.

Selective abatement of electron-rich organic contaminants by trace complexed Mn(II)-catalyzed periodate via high-valent manganese-oxo species

Mn(II) is among the most efficient catalysts for the periodate (PI)-based oxidation process. In-situ formed colloidal MnO2 simultaneously serves as the catalyst and oxidant during the degradation of organic contaminants by PI. Here, it is revealed that the complexation of Mn(II) by ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) further enhances the performance of PI-based oxidation in the selective degradation of organic contaminants. As evidenced by methyl phenyl sulfoxide probing, 18O-isotope labeling, and mass spectroscopy, EDTA complexation modulates the reaction pathway between Mn(II) and PI, triggering the generation of high-valent manganese-oxo (MnV-oxo) as the dominant reactive species. PI mediates the single-electron oxidation of Mn(II) to Mn(III), which is stabilized by EDTA complexation and then further oxidized by PI via the oxygen-atom transfer step, ultimately producing the MnV-oxo species. Ligands analogous to EDTA, namely, [S,S]-ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid and L-glutamic acid N,N-diacetic acid, also enhances the Mn(II)/PI process and favors MnV-oxo as the dominant species. This study demonstrates that functional ligands can tune the efficiency and reaction pathways of Mn(II)-catalyzed peroxide and peroxyacid-based oxidation processes.

Solar/periodate-triggered rapid inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa by interrupting the Calvin-Benson cycle

Frequent outbreak of cyanobacteria is a serious problem for drinking water treatment. The microcystins released from Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) could cause irreversible damage to human health. Catalyst-free solar/periodate (PI) system has recently presented great potential for bacterial inactivation, whereas the application potential and underlying mechanisms of the effective M. aeruginosa control remain unclear. Our work delineated the key role of ROS that inactivating/harmless disposing M. aeruginosa in the simulated sunlight (SSL)/PI system. Singlet oxygen may specifically cause DNA damage but maintain membrane integrity, preventing the risk of microcystins leakage. The SSL/PI 300 μM system could also effectively inhibit M. aeruginosa recovery for >7 days and completely degrade microcystin-LR (50.0 μg/L) within 30 min. Non-targeted metabolomic analysis suggested that the SSL/PI system inactivated M. aeruginosa mainly by interrupting the Calvin-Benson cycle, which damaged the metabolic flux of glycolysis and its downstream pathways such as the oxidative PPP pathway and glutathione metabolism. Furthermore, the activated PI system exhibited an even better algal inhibition under natural sunlight irradiation, evidenced by the seriously damaged cell membrane of M. aeruginosa. Overall, this study reported the comprehensive mechanisms of algal control and application potentials of solar/PI systems. The findings facilitated the development of emerging algicidal technology and its application in controlling environmental harmful algae.

Unraveling the intrinsic mechanism behind the selective oxidation of sulfonamide antibiotics in the Mn(II)/periodate process: The overlooked surface-mediated electron transfer process

Mn(II) exhibits a superb ability in activating periodate (PI) for the efficient degradation of aqueous organic contaminants. Nevertheless, ambiguous conclusions regarding the involved reactive species contributing to the removal of organic contaminants remain unresolved. In this work, we found that the Mn(II)/PI process showed outstanding and selective reactivity for oxidizing sulfonamides with the removal ranging from 57.1% to 100% at pH 6.5. Many lines of evidence suggest that the in-situ formed colloidal MnO2 (cMnO2) served as a catalyst to mediate electron transfer from sulfonamides to PI on its surface via forming cMnO2-PI complex (cMnO2-PI*) for the efficient oxidation of sulfonamides in the Mn(II)/PI process. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify that the inclusive aniline moiety was the key site determining the electron transfer-dominated oxidation of sulfonamides. Furthermore, DFT calculation results reveal that the discrepancies in the removal of sulfonamides in the Mn(II)/PI process were attributed to different kinetic stability and chemical reactivity of sulfonamides caused by their heterocyclic substituents. In addition, a high utilization efficiency of PI was achieved in the Mn(II)/PI process owing to the surface-mediated electron transfer mechanism. This work provides deep insights into the surface-promoted mechanism in the cMnO2-involved oxidation processes.

The overlooked role of Cr(VI) in micropollutant degradation under solar light irradiation

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is ubiquitous in natural environments, whereas its role in the transformation of coexisting contaminants may have been overlooked. In this work, it was reported for the first time that the irradiation of Cr(VI) by solar light (solar light/Cr(VI) system) could effectively degrade various micropollutants with different structures. The removal efficiency of selected micropollutants was increased by 13.3-64.8% by the solar light/Cr(VI) system compared to that by direct solar photolysis. Meanwhile, the oxidation rates were enhanced by 2.2-21.5 folds, while they were negligible by Cr(VI) oxidation alone. Experiments by specific scavengers, probe compounds, fluorescence absorbance, and electron spin resonance analysis demonstrated that hydroxyl radical (•OH) was the major reactive species in the solar light/Cr(VI) system. Further experiments showed that the generation of •OH was closely related to the intermediate Cr(V) generated from Cr(VI) reduction, and Cr(V) could be re-oxidized back to Cr(VI). Increasing solution pH negatively affected model micropollutant (carbamazepine (CBZ)) degradation by the solar light/Cr(VI) system, mainly due to the decreased quantum yield of •OH at higher pH. Coexisting sulfate ions showed negligible effect on CBZ degradation in the solar light/Cr(VI) system, while the presence of bicarbonate, chloride, and humic acid inhibited CBZ degradation to varying degrees, owing to their diverse scavenging effects on •OH. Furthermore, moderate CBZ degradation was also achieved by natural solar light photolysis of Cr(VI). This study demonstrated the pivotal role of Cr(VI) in the transformation of micropollutants under solar irradiation, which advances the understanding of the fate of micropollutants in natural environments.

Ru(III)-Periodate for High Performance and Selective Degradation of Aqueous Organic Pollutants: Important Role of Ru(V) and Ru(IV)

In this study, Ru(III) ions were utilized to activate periodate (PI) for oxidation of trace organic pollutants (TOPs, e.g., carbamazepine (CBZ)). The Ru(III)/PI system can significantly promote the oxidation of CBZ in a wide initial pH range (3.0-11.0) at 1 μM Ru(III), showing much higher performance than transition metal ions (i.e., Fe(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Fe(III), Cu(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), and Ce(III)) and noble metal ion (i.e., Ag(I), Pd(II), Pt(II), and Ir(III)) activated PI systems. Probe experiments, UV-vis spectra, and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra confirmed high-valent Ru-oxo species (Ru(V)=O) as the dominant oxidant in the process. Because of the dominant role of Ru(V)=O, the Ru(III)/PI process exhibited a remarkable selectivity and strong anti-interference in the oxidation of TOPs in complex water matrices. The Ru(V)=O species can undertake 1-e- and 2-e- transfer reactions via the catalytic cycles of Ru(V)=O → Ru(IV) → Ru(III) and Ru(V)=O → Ru(III), respectively. The utilization efficiency of PI in the Ru(III)/PI process for the oxidation of TOPs can approach 100% under optimal conditions. PI stoichiometrically transformed into IO3- without production of undesired iodine species (e.g., HOI and I2). This study developed an efficient and environmentally benign advanced oxidation process for rapid removal of TOPs and enriched understandings on reactivity of Ru(V)=O and Ru catalytic cycles.

Periodate-based advanced oxidation processes: A review focusing on the overlooked role of high-valent iron and manganese species

Periodate-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received mounting attention in scientific research in the past two decades due to their fair oxidizing capability for satisfactory decontamination performance. Unlike iodyl (IO₃^•) and hydroxyl (^•OH) radicals are widely recognized as the predominant species generated from periodate activation, the role of high-valent metal as a dominant reactive oxidant has been proposed recently. Although several excellent reviews concerning periodate-based AOPs have been reported, there are still prevalent knowledge roadblocks to high-valent metals' formation and reaction mechanisms. Therefore, this work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of high-valent metals, especially concerning the identification methods (e.g., direct and indirect strategies), formation mechanisms (e.g., formation pathways and interpretation based on density functional theory calculation), reaction mechanisms (e.g., nucleophilic attack, electron transfer, oxygen-atom transfer, electrophilic addition, and hydride and hydrogen-atom transfer), and reactivity performance (e.g., chemical properties, influencing factors, and practical applications). Furthermore, points for critical thinking and further prospects for high-valent metal-mediated oxidation processes are suggested, emphasizing the need for parallel efforts to enhance the stability and reproducibility of high-valent metal-mediated oxidation processes in real world applications.

Novel strategy for copper precipitation from cupric complexes wastewater: Catalytic oxidation or reduction self-decomplexation?

Cupric (Cu(II)) complexes in industrial wastewater are responsible for the failure of conventional alkaline precipitation, but the properties of cuprous (Cu(I)) complexes at alkaline circumstance have not been focused. This report proposed a novel strategy for the remediation of Cu(II)-complexed wastewater by coupling alkaline precipitation with green benign reductant, namely, hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HA). This remediation process (HA-OH) exhibits superior Cu removal efficiency that cannot be achieved with the same dosage of oxidants (3 mM). The possibility of Cu(I) activated O₂ catalysis and self-decomplexation precipitation were investigated, and the results identified that ¹O₂ was generated from Cu(II)/Cu(I) cycle, but it was insufficient to annihilate organic ligands. Cu(I) self-decomplexation was the dominate mechanism of Cu removal. For real industrial wastewater, HA-OH process can realize the efficient Cu₂O precipitation and Cu recovery. This novel strategy utilized intrinsic pollutant in wastewater without introducing other metals, complicated materials, and expensive equipment, broadening the insight for the remediation of Cu(II)-complexed wastewater.

Activation of periodate by N-doped iron-based porous carbon for degradation of sulfisoxazole: Significance of catalyst-mediated electron transfer mechanism

Periodate (PI) has recently been studied as an excellent oxidant in advanced oxidation processes, and its reported mechanism is mainly the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work presents an efficient approach using N-doped iron-based porous carbon (Fe@N-C) to activate periodate for the degradation of sulfisoxazole (SIZ). Characterization results indicated the catalyst has high catalytic activity, stable structure, and high electron transfer activity. In terms of degradation mechanism, it is pointed out that the non-radical pathway is the dominant mechanism. In order to prove this mechanism, we have carried out scavenging experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, salt bridge experiments and electrochemical experiments, which demonstrate the occurrence of mediated electron transfer mechanism. Fe@N-C could mediate the electron transfer from organic contaminant molecules to PI, thus improving the efficiency of PI utilization, rather than simply inducing the activation of PI through Fe@N-C. The overall results of this study provided a new understanding into the application of Fe@N-C activated PI in wastewater treatment.

The promoted degradation of biochar-adsorbed 2,4-dichlorophenol in the presence of Fe(III)

Organic pollutant degradation by biochar could be promoted by Fe because of the Fenton-like reaction. However, studies have also confirmed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play only a limited role in organic pollutant degradation by biochar. Herein, we quantitatively identified 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) adsorption and degradation in Fe-biochar systems and obtained degradation (k₁) and adsorption rate constants (k₂) by two-compartment first-order kinetics modeling. The k₁ was approximately 7-10 times lower than the corresponding k₂ and the positive correlation between k₁ and k₂ illustrated that adsorption and degradation were kinetically associated. ROS quenching only slightly inhibited 2,4-DCP degradation. Chemicals with similar structures to ROS quenchers (without quenching ability) also inhibited 2,4-DCP degradation, probably because of the competition of the active degradation sites on biochars. Electrochemical analysis and pH-impact experiments further elucidated that 2,4-DCP underwent oxidation-dominated degradation in the adsorbed phase via direct electron transfer. Fe(III) obviously increased 2,4-DCP adsorption through cation bridging and enhanced electron density by Fe-O conjugations on the biochar surface, which facilitated subsequent degradation. This study emphasized the importance of degradation on the biochar solid phase and that a breakthrough of the mass transfer bottleneck of adsorption will greatly promote degradation.

Nitrilotriacetic acid-assisted Mn(II) activated periodate for rapid and long-lasting degradation of carbamazepine: The importance of Mn(IV)-oxo species

Periodate-based (PI, IO₄^-) oxidation processes for pollutant elimination have gained increased attention in recent years. This study shows that nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) can assist trace Mn(II) in activating PI for fast and long-lasting degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) (100% degradation in 2 min). PI can oxidize Mn(II) to permanganate(MnO₄^-, Mn(VII)) in the presence of NTA, which indicates the important role of transient manganese-oxo species. ¹⁸O isotope labeling experiments using methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) as a probe further confirmed the formation of manganese-oxo species. The chemical stoichiometric relationship (PI consumption: PMSO₂ generation) and theoretical calculation suggested that Mn(IV)-oxo-NTA species were the main reactive species. The NTA-chelated manganese facilitated direct oxygen transfer from PI to Mn(II)-NTA and prevented hydrolysis and agglomeration of transient manganese-oxo species. PI was transformed completely to stable and nontoxic iodate but not lower-valent toxic iodine species (i.e., HOI, I₂, and I^-). The degradation pathways and mechanisms of CBZ were investigated using mass spectrometry and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. This study provided a steady and highly efficient choice for the quick degradation of organic micropollutants and broadened the perspective on the evolution mechanism of manganese intermediates in the Mn(II)/NTA/PI system.

Ferrate(VI)/Periodate System: Synergistic and Rapid Oxidation of Micropollutants via Periodate/Iodate-Modulated Fe(IV)/Fe(V) Intermediates

The presence of organic micropollutants in water sources worldwide has created a need for the development of effective and selective oxidation methods in complex water matrices. This study is the first report of the combination of ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) and periodate (PI) for synergistic, rapid, and selective elimination of multiple micropollutants. This combined system was found to outperform other Fe(VI)/oxidant systems (e.g., H₂O₂, peroxydisulfate, and peroxymonosulfate) in rapid water decontamination. Scavenging, probing, and electron spin resonance experiments showed that high-valent Fe(IV)/Fe(V) intermediates, rather than hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, singlet oxygen, and iodyl radicals, played a dominant role in the process. Further, the generation of Fe(IV)/Fe(V) was evidenced directly by the ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic test. Surprisingly, the reactivity of PI toward Fe(VI) is rather low (0.8223 M^-1 s^-1) at pH 8.0, implying that PI was not acting as an activator. Besides, as the only iodine sink of PI, iodate also played an enhanced role in micropollutant abatement by Fe(VI) oxidation. Further experiments proved that PI and/or iodate might function as the Fe(IV)/Fe(V) ligands, causing the utilization efficiency of Fe(IV)/Fe(V) intermediates for pollutant oxidation to outcompete their auto-decomposition. Finally, the oxidized products and plausible transformation pathways of three different micropollutants by single Fe(VI) and Fe(VI)/PI oxidation were characterized and elucidated. Overall, this study proposed a novel selective oxidation strategy (i.e., Fe(VI)/PI system) that could efficiently eliminate water micropollutants and clarified the unexpected interactions between PI/iodate and Fe(VI) for accelerated oxidation.

A novel Fe-PTFE magnetic composite prepared by ball milling for the efficient degradation of imidacloprid: Insights into interaction mechanisms based on ultrasonic piezoelectric catalysis

In this study, a novel magnetic poly (tetrafluoroethylene, PTFE) (Fe@PTFE) piezoelectric catalytic material was successfully prepared by a simple ball milling treatment. The prepared piezoelectric catalytic material Fe@PTFE exhibited excellent catalytic performance under the activation of ultrasonic (US) and realized the efficient degradation of imidacloprid (IMI) at low concentrations in an aqueous environment. It was demonstrated by various characterization methods that Fe⁰ was successfully loaded onto PTFE particles (1-15 μm) by ball milling. The US/Fe@PTFE system exhibited superior IMI degradation efficiency (99 %) and degradation rate (7.81× 10^-2 min^-1) under ultrasonic polarization with high efficiences of IMI degradation after five cycles. In addition, the system maintained excellent removal efficiencies in the real water matrixes. The mechanism study demonstrated that Fe@PTFE generated a variety of reactive oxygen species (^•OH, ¹O₂ and O₂^•-) and H₂O₂ under the irradiation of US, and the production of H₂O₂ provided the conditions for the continuation of the Fenton-like reaction. Furthermore, the presence of O₂^•- in the system enhanced the recycling efficiency of Fe(III) and Fe(II), which further enhanced the degradation efficiency of the Fenton-like process. This study provides a novel perspective on a PTFE-based ultrasonic piezoelectric catalytic system for the efficient removal of organic pollutants in the environmental field.

Promising antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of Orobanche aegyptiaca extract-mediated bimetallic silver-selenium nanoparticles synthesis: Effect of UV-exposure, bacterial membrane leakage reaction mechanism, and kinetic study

In this research, Orobanche aegyptiaca extract was utilized as an eco-friendly, and cost-effective green route for the construction of bimetallic silver-selenium nanoparticles (Ag-Se NPs). Bimetallic Ag-Se NPs were characterized by XRD, EDX, FTIR, HR-TEM, DLS, SEM/mapping and EDX studies. Antimicrobial, and antibiofilm potentials were tested against some selected pathogenic bacteria and unicellular fungi by ZOI, MIC, effect of UV exposure, and inhibition %. Reaction mechanism was assessed through membrane leakage assay and SEM imaging. HRTEM analysis confirmed the spherical nature and was ranged from 18.1 nm to 72.0 nm, and the avarage particle size is determined to be 30.58 nm. SEM imaging prove that bimetallic Ag-Se NPs presents as a bright particles, and both Ag and Se were distributed equally across O. aegyptiaca extract and Guar gum stabilizers. ZOI results showed that, bimetallic Ag-Se NPs have antimicrobial activity against S. aureus (20.0 nm), E. coli (18.5 nm), P. aeruginosa (12.6 nm), and C. albicans (18.2 nm). In addition, bimetallic Ag-Se NPs were able to inhibit the biofilm formation for S. aureus by 79.48%, for E. coli by 78.79%, for P. aeruginosa by 77.50%, and for C. albicans by 73.73%. Bimetallic Ag-Se NPs are an excellent disinfectant once it had excited by UV light. It was observed that the quantity of cellular protein discharged from S. aureus is directly proportional to the concentration of bimetallic Ag-Se NPs and found to be 244.21 μg/mL after the treatment with 1 mg/mL, which proves the antibacterial characteristics, and explains the creation of holes in the cell membrane of S. aureus producing in the oozing out of the proteins from the S. aureus cytoplasm. Based on the promising properties, they showed superior antimicrobial potential at low concentration (to avoid toxicity) and continued-phase durability, they may use in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Periodate activation by pyrite for the disinfection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria: Performance and mechanisms

The propagation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) greatly endangers the ecological safety and human health. This study employed pyrite (FeS₂, naturally abundant mineral) for periodate (PI) activation to disinfect ARB. FeS₂/PI system could disinfect 1 × 10⁷ CFU mL^-1 of kanamycin-resistant E.coli below the limit of detection in 20 min. Efficient ARB inactivation performance was achieved in pH from 3 to 9, ionic strength from 0 to 300 mM, with HA (0.1-10 mg L^-1) in suspension, and in real water samples including tap water, river water and sewage. FeS₂/PI system could also efficiently disinfect gentamycin-resistant E.coli and Gram-positive B. subtilis. The generated reactive species including Fe(IV), ·O₂^- and ·OH would attack cell membrane and overwhelmed intracellular defense system. The intracellular kanamycin resistance genes in cells would be released and then degraded in FeS₂/PI system. PI preferred to be adsorbed on Fe site of FeS₂ (with lower adsorption energy, more occupancy of bonding state and stronger bonding strength). The subsequent transfer of electron cloud from Fe site to PI would cleave IO bond to generate reactive species. Moreover, FeS₂/PI system could also combine with sand filtration system to efficiently capture and disinfect ARB. Therefore, FeS₂/PI system is a promising approach to inactivate ARB in different scenarios.

Molten-salts assisted preparation of iron-nitrogen-carbon catalyst for efficient degradation of acetaminophen by periodate activation

Highly efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts were desired to activate periodate (PI) for sustainable pollution control. Herein, iron-nitrogen-carbon catalyst was synthesized using a facile molten-salts mediated pyrolysis strategy (denoted as FeNC-MS) and employed to activate PI for the degradation of acetaminophen (ACE). Compared with iron-nitrogen-carbon catalyst prepared by direct pyrolysis method (marked as FeNC), FeNC-MS exhibited superior catalytic activity due to its large specific surface area (1600 m² g^-1) and the abundance of FeN_x sites. The batch experiments revealed that FeNC/PI process achieved 37 % ACE removal within 20 min, while ACE removal in FeNC-MS/PI process was 98 % under the identical conditions. Integrated with electron paramagnetic resonance tests, quenching experiments, chemical probe identification, and electrochemical experiments, we demonstrated that FeNC-MS-PI complexes-mediated electron transfer was the predominant mechanism for the oxidation of ACE. Further analysis disclosed that FeN_x sites in FeNC-MS were the main active sites for the activation of PI. Additionally, FeNC-MS/PI process exhibited significant resistance to humic acid and background electrolyte, and avoided the secondary pollution imposed by Fe leaching. The possible degradation pathways of ACE were proposed. The germination experiments of lettuce seeds showed that the ecotoxicity of ACE solution was significantly reduced after treatment with FeNC-MS/PI process. Overall, this study provided a facile strategy for the synthesis of efficient iron-nitrogen-carbon catalysts and gained fundamental insight into the mechanism of PI activation by iron-nitrogen-carbon catalysts for pollutants degradation.

Uncovering novel disinfection mechanisms of solar light/periodate system: The dominance of singlet oxygen and metabolomic insights

Disinfection plays an essential role in waterborne pathogen control and disease prevention, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Catalyst-free solar light/periodate (PI) system has recently presented great potential in water disinfection, whereas the in-depth chemical and microbiological mechanisms for efficient bacterial inactivation remain unclear. Our work delineated firstly the critical role of singlet oxygen, instead of reported hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals, in dominating bacterial inactivation by the PI/simulated sunlight (SSL) system. Multi-evidence demonstrated the prominent disinfection performance of this system for Staphylococcus aureus in terms of culturability (> 6 logs CFU), cellular integrity, and metabolic activity. Particularly, the excellent intracellular DNA removal (> 95%) indicated that PI/SSL system may function as a selective disinfection strategy to diminish bacterial culturability without damaging the cell membrane. The PI/SSL system could also effectively inhibit bacterial regrowth for > 5 days and horizontal gene transfer between E. coli genera. Nontargeted metabolomic analysis suggested that PI/SSL system inactivated bacteria by triggering the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species and the depletion of reduced glutathione. Additionally, the PI/SSL system could accomplish simultaneous micropollutant removal and bacterial inactivation, suggesting its versatility in water decontamination. Overall, this study deciphers more comprehensive antibacterial mechanisms of this environmentally friendly disinfection system, facilitating the technical development and application of the selective disinfection strategy in environmental pathogen control.

Insight into mechanism of peroxydisulfate activation by natural pyrite: Participation of Fe(IV) and regulation of Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle by sulfur species

In this study, natural pyrite (NP) was used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for imidacloprid (IMD) degradation. NP was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Effects of key reaction parameters (NP dosage, PDS concentration and initial pH) and co-existing ions on IMD degradation in the NP/PDS system were investigated. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests identified the existence of sulfate radical (SO₄^•-), hydroxyl radical (^•OH), singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and superoxide radical (O₂^•-). The cumulative concentration of SO₄^•- and ^•OH were quantified by the formation of benzoquinone (BQ) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), respectively. Meanwhile, more than 60% of methylphenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) was selectively converted to methylphenyl sulfone (PMSO₂), revealing that Fe(IV) was dominant in the NP/PDS system. The order of contribution of the three reactive species in the NP/PDS system was Fe(IV) > ^•OH > SO₄^•- (contributions of ¹O₂ and O₂^•- were negligible). Fe(II) released from NP played a crucial role in PDS activation, and sulfur species in NP could also boost Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and contribute to the generation of reactive species. Further, the possible degradation pathways of IMD have been proposed based on the detected intermediates using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), and the toxicity (including acute toxicity, developmental toxicity and mutagenicity) of these intermediates have been predicted using Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T). Moreover, NP/PDS system was applied in four natural water bodies and IMD degradation efficiency reached more than 97% after adjusting the pH to 3. The fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra showed that in addition to IMD, NP/PDS system could also remove other impurities.

Water Complex of Imidogen

Imidogen (NH) is the simplest nitrogen hydride that plays an important role in combustion and interstellar chemistry, and its combination with H₂O is the prototypical amidation reaction of O-H bonds involving a nitrene intermediate. Herein, we report the observation of the elusive water complex of NH, a prereaction complex associated with the amidation reaction in a solid N₂ matrix at 10 K. The hydrogen-bonded structure of NH···OH₂ (versus HN···HOH) is confirmed via IR spectroscopy with comprehensive isotope labeling (D, ¹⁸O, and ¹⁵N) and quantum chemical calculations at the UCCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ level of theory. In line with the observed absorption at 350 nm, irradiation of the complex at 365 nm leads to O-H bond insertion, yielding hydroxylamine NH₂OH.

Promoting selective water decontamination via boosting activation of periodate by nanostructured Ru-supported Co3O4 catalysts

The superior catalytic efficiency of ruthenium (Ru)-based nanocomposites in advanced oxidation processes for water decontamination has attracted accumulating attention worldwide. However, rather limited knowledge is currently available regarding their roles in activating periodate (PI), an emerging oxidant with versatile environmental applications. This study firstly delineated that Ru-supported Co₃O₄ (Ru/Co₃O₄), a typical Ru-based nanomaterial, can efficiently accomplish PI activation to eliminate multiple organic micropollutants and inactivate different pathogenic bacteria. Almost all eight micropollutants can be completely removed within 2 min of Ru/Co₃O₄-PI oxidation except sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which was degraded ∼70 % at 2 min with 100 % mineralization after 10 min. The excellent catalytic performance was independent of PI dosages, initial pH, and coexisting water constituents, demonstrating its prominent capability as a selective oxidation strategy. Diverse lines of evidence indicated the dominant role of single oxygen in the Ru/Co₃O₄-PI system, which triggered the generation of five transformation products of SMX with reduced environmental risks. Concurrently, PI was stoichiometrically converted to the eco-friendly IO₃^-. Additionally, Ru/Co₃O₄-PI system achieved 6-log inactivation of different pathogenic bacteria within 1 min, implying the feasibility of rapid water disinfection. Overall, this work demonstrated the excellent promise of Ru-based composites in PI activation for highly efficient and selective water decontamination.

Ball milling-assisted preparation of sludge biochar as a novel periodate activator for nonradical degradation of sulfamethoxazole: Insight into the mechanism of enhanced electron transfer

The non-radical pathway of periodate (PI) activation for the removal of persistent organic contaminants has received increasing attention due to its higher stability and oxidative advantages. In this study, the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by ball mill treated magnetic sludge biochar (BM-MSBC) through activation of PI by electron transfer mechanism was reported. Experimental and characterization results showed that the ball milling treatment resulted in a better pore and defect structure, which also significantly enhanced the electron transfer capacity of the sludge biochar. The BM-MSBC/PI system exhibited notable dependence of activator concentration and initial pH, while the effect of PI concentration was not significant. The coexisting substances (common anions and natural organic matters) hardly affect the degradation of SMX in the BM-MSBC/PI system. The phytotoxicity experiments suggested that the treatment of BM-MSBC/PI system could significantly reduce the biological toxicity of SMX solution. This study provides a novel, economical, and facile modification method for the application of sludge biochar in advanced oxidation processes.

Enhanced anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge with periodate-based pretreatment

The potential of periodate (PI) in sludge anaerobic digestion is not tapped, although it has recently attracted great research interest in organic contaminants removal and pathogens inactivation in wastewater treatment. This is the first work to demonstrate significant improvement in methane generation from waste activated sludge (WAS) with PI pretreatment and to provide underlying mechanisms. Biochemical methane potential tests indicated that methane yield enhanced from 100.2 to 146.3 L per kg VS (VS, volatile solids) with PI dosages from 0 to 100 mg per g TS (TS, total solids). Electron spin resonance showed PI could be activated without extra activator addition, which might be attributed to the native transition metals (e.g., Fe²⁺) in WAS, thereby generating hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide radicals (•O₂ ^-), and singlet oxygen (¹O₂). Further scavenging tests demonstrated all of them synergistically promoted WAS disintegration, and their contributions were in the order of •O₂ ^- > •OH > ¹O₂, leading to the release of substantial biodegradable substances (i.e., proteins and polysaccharides) into the liquid phase for subsequent biotransformation. Moreover, fluorescence and ultraviolet spectroscopy analyses indicated the recalcitrant organics (especially lignocellulose and humus) could be degraded by reducing their aromaticity under oxidative stress of PI, thus readily for methanogenesis. Microbial community analysis revealed some microorganisms participating in hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and acetoclastic methanogenesis were enriched after PI pretreatment. The improved key enzyme activities and up-regulated metabolic pathways further provided direct evidence for enhanced methane production. This research was expected to broaden the application scope of PI and provide more diverse pretreatment choices for energy recovery through anaerobic digestion.

Emerging periodate-based oxidation technologies for water decontamination: A state-of-the-art mechanistic review and future perspectives

With the ever-increasing severity of the ongoing water crisis, it is of great significance to develop efficient, eco-friendly water treatment technologies. As an emerging oxidant in the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), periodate (PI) has received worldwide attention owing to the advantages of superior stability, susceptible activation capability, and high efficiency for decontamination. This is the first review that conducts a comprehensive analysis of the mechanism, pollutant transformation pathway, toxicity evolution, barriers, and future directions of PI-based AOPs based on the scientific information and experimental data reported in recent years. The pollutant elimination in PI-based AOPs was mainly attributed to the in situ generate reactive oxygen species (e.g., ^•OH, O(³P), ¹O₂, and O₂^•-), reactive iodine species (e.g., IO₃^• and IO₄^•), and high-valent metal-oxo species with exceptionally high reactivity. These reactive species were derived from the PI activated by the external energy, metal activators, alkaline, freezing, hydroxylamine, H₂O_2, etc. It is noteworthy that direct electron transport could also dominate the decontamination in carbon-based catalyst/PI systems. Furthermore, PI was transformed to iodate (IO₃^-) stoichiometrically via an oxygen-atom transfer process in most PI-based AOPs systems. However, the production of I₂, I^-, and HOI was sometimes inevitable. Furthermore, the transformation pathway of typical micropollutants was clarified, and the in silico QSAR-based prediction results indicated that most transformation products retained biodegradation recalcitrance and multi-endpoint toxicity. The barriers faced by the PI-based AOPs were also clarified with potential solutions. Finally, future perspectives and research directions are highlighted based on the current state of PI-based AOPs. This review enhances our in-depth understanding of PI-based AOPs for pollutant elimination and identifies future research needs to focus on the reduction of toxic byproducts.

Degradation of Safranin O in Water by UV/TiO2/IO4− Process: Effect of Operating Conditions and Mineralization

Hybrid advanced oxidation processes employed to degrade recalcitrant organic pollutants in water have been widely examined in recent years. In the present work, the potential of TiO2-mediated photocatalysis in the presence of the periodate anion (IO4−) toward Safranin O (SO) removal from aqueous solutions was investigated. The findings revealed a high efficiency of the UV/TiO2/IO4− system due to the production of more reactive radicals (•OH, IO3• and IO4•) and non-radical species (O3, IO3− and IO4−). Additionally, the presence of IO4− as an effective electron acceptor avoids electron-hole recombination, which induces more oxidative reactions at the hole level, increasing the degradation rate of SO. Kinetically, the involvement of IO4− anions in the UV/TiO2 system enhanced substantially the initial rate of degradation; from 0.295 to 12.07 mg L−1 min−1. The performance of both systems, i.e., UV/TiO2 and UV/TiO2/IO4−, was examined under different conditions such as initial dye concentration, photocatalyst loading, periodate dosage, initial solution pH, temperature and dissolved gases. The SO degradation was found to be maximized at low concentration of pollutant at the optimum loading of catalyst (0.4 g L−1). The continuous increasing in periodate concentration over the range of 0.01–3 mM improved the system reactivity with no overdose effect. Both systems seemed to be insensitive to minor variations in temperature in the range of 15–45 °C, and showed a strong dependence on initial solution pH where the degradation rates increased proportionally with pH values up to pH 10 and decreased afterwards. A slight negative effect on the photocatalytic removal yield was noted under either aeration, nitrogen or argon atmospheres in the presence of periodate (UV/TiO2/IO4−), with minor enhancement under aeration for the classical system (UV/TiO2). The mineralization of the organic substrate was also monitored. The depletion of organic matter with time was measured using total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Despite the rapid decolorization of the dye solution in the UV/TiO2/IO4− system, a TOC removal efficiency of ~62% was obtained with both systems after 180 min of treatment.

Converting Hybrid Mechanisms to Electron Transfer Mechanism by Increasing Biochar Pyrolysis Temperature for the Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole in a Sludge Biochar/Periodate System

In this study, sludge biochar was prepared under four pyrolysis temperatures (SBC300, SBC500, SBC700, and SBC900) and then was employed to activate periodate (PI) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Various characterization methods were employed to investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the physicochemical properties of sludge biochar and the activation capacity of periodate. The SMX adsorption capacity of SBCs and the ability of activating PI to degrade SMX increased with the increasing pyrolysis temperature. The degradation of SMX by the SBCs/PI systems was highly dependent on the initial pH of the solution and the dosage of SBCs. Mechanistic studies indicated that the degradation of SMX by the SBCs/PI system was mainly based on an electron-mediated transfer mechanism. Additionally, the electron transfer capacity of the SBCs affected the defects and the degree of graphitization. The contribution of free radicals to SMX degradation decreases with increasing pyrolysis temperature. Toxicity experiments demonstrated that the toxic elimination of SMX by the SBCs/PI system was enhanced with increasing pyrolysis temperature.

Improved Dewaterability of Waste Activated Sludge by Fe(II)-Activated Potassium Periodate Oxidation

Fe(II)-activated potassium periodate (KIO₄) oxidation was used to improve the dewaterability of waste-activated sludge for the first time. Compared with those of raw sludge, the capillary suction time (CST), specific resistance filtration (SRF), and water content of filter cake (W_C) of sludge treated using the Fe(II)/KIO₄ process under the optimal conditions (i.e., the initial pH = 6.8, KIO₄ dose = 1.4 mmol/g volatile suspended solids, Fe(II)/KIO₄ molar ratio = 1.2) decreased by 64.34%, 84.13%, and 6.69%, respectively. For conditioned sludge flocs, the Zeta potential and particle size were increased, and hydrophilic proteins in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were partly degraded, accompanied by the transformation of tightly bound EPS into soluble EPS and the conversion of dense sludge flocs into loose and porous ones. During Fe(II)/KIO₄ oxidation, Fe(IV) and the accompanying ^•OH were determined as the predominant reactive species and the underlying mechanism of sludge EPS degradation was proposed. This work provides a prospective method for conditioning the sludge dewaterability.

Efficient degradation of alkyl imidazole ionic liquids in simulated sunlight irradiated periodate system: Kinetics, reaction mechanisms, and toxicity evolution

As a class of emerging aquatic pollutants, alkylimidazole-based ionic liquids (AM-ILs) have received extensive attention due to the large acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. Therefore, in order to protect both aquatic organisms and human beings, it is necessary to seek an efficient and environmental-friendly technology for removal of AM-ILs from water bodies. In this work, we found that under simulated sunlight (Xe lamp) irradiation, periodate (KIO₄, PI) could efficiently degrade 1-hexyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bromide ([HMMIm]Br), a representative AM-ILs with six carbon atoms in the side chain. Kinetics experiments on the degradation of [HMMIm]Br were performed, and the results showed that a high degradation efficiency (≥90.00%) of the cation ([HMMIm]⁺) was still maintained under harsh water conditions of strong acidity/alkaliny or with various non-target inorganic ions. More importantly, the anion of bromide ion (Br^-) was not oxidized to the carcinogenic bromate (BrO₃^-) in current reaction system. The excited stated PI (marked as PI*) was detected by Laser flash photolysis, and it was an important reactive species for [HMMIm]⁺ degradation. As rationalized by theoretical calculations and scavenging experiments, the main oxidation mechanisms of [HMMIm]⁺ were hydroxyl radicals induced substitution reaction, PI* initiated electron and double oxygen transfer, and direct photolysis mediated chemical bond cleavage reaction, which contributed to 73%, 21%, and 6% of [HMMIm]⁺ degradation, respectively. Moreover, toxicity evaluation by ECOSAR software indicated that the oxidation products were generally less toxic to three aquatic organisms (fish, water flea, and green algae) than the target molecule [HMMIm]Br. In conclusion, this work proposed novel oxidation mechanisms of sunlight-activated PI system, and the findings may inspire further researches on the application of photoactivated hypervalent acids in water purification.

Understanding the nonradical activation of peroxymonosulfate by different crystallographic MnO2: The pivotal role of MnIII content on the surface

Manganese oxide-activated persulfate plays a critical role in water purification and in situ chemical oxidation processes, but the underlying mechanism needs to be further revealed. Herein, the detailed mechanism of MnO₂ with various crystallographic structures (α-, β-, γ-, and δ-MnO₂) towards peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was investigated. PMS activated by tunnel structured α-, β-, and γ-MnO₂ showed higher acetaminophen (ACE) removal than layer structured δ-MnO₂ with the removal efficiency following an order of α-MnO₂ (85%) ≈ γ-MnO₂ (84%) > β-MnO₂ (65%) > δ-MnO₂ (31%). Integrated with chemical quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance, Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Langmuir-Hinshelwood model on kinetic data, both surface-bound PMS complexes and direct oxidation by surface manganese species (Mn^{(Ⅳ, Ⅲ)}_(s)) were disclosed as the dominant oxidation mechanism for ACE degradation in α-, β-, and γ-MnO₂/PMS, which were rarely observed in previous reports. Moreover, the catalytic activity of α-, β-, and γ-MnO₂ was positively correlated to the Mn^III_(s) content on the catalyst surface. Higher content of Mn^III_(s) would stimulate the generation of more oxygen vacancies, which was conducive to the adsorption of PMS and the formation of reactive complexes. Overall, this study might provide deeper insight into the nonradical activation mechanism of PMS over different crystallographic MnO₂.
