Carbonate Radical Oxidation of Cylindrospermopsin (Cyanotoxin): Kinetic Studies and Mechanistic Consideration

Elucidating the enhanced role of carbonate radical in propranolol degradation by UV/peroxymonosulfate system

Carbonate radical (CO3•-) has been proved to be an important secondary radical in advanced oxidation processes due to various radical reactions involved HCO3-/CO32-. However, the roles and contributions of CO3•- in organic micropollutant degradation have not been explored systematically. Here, we quantified the impact of CO3•- on the degradation kinetics of propranolol, a representative pollutant in the UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, by constructing a steady-state radical model. Substantially, the measured values were coincident with the predictive values, and the contributions of CO3•- on propranolol degradation were the water matrix-dependent. Propranolol degradation increased by 130% in UV/PMS system containing 10 mM HCO3-, and the contribution of CO3•- was as high as 58%. Relatively high pH values are beneficial for propranolol degradation in pure water containing HCO3-, and the contributions of CO3•- also enhanced, while an inverse phenomenon was shown for the effects of propranolol concentrations. Dissolved organic matter exhibited significant scavenging effects on HO•, SO4•-, and CO3•-, substantially retarding the elimination process. The developed model successfully predicted oxidation degradation kinetics of propranolol in actual sewage, and CO3•- contribution was up to 93%, which in indicative of the important role of CO3•- in organic micropollutant removal via AOPs treatment.

Discriminating the Active Ru Species Towards the Selective Generation of Singlet Oxygen from Peroxymonosulfate: Nanoparticles Surpass Single-Atom Catalysts

Singlet oxygen (1O2) is an exceptional reactive oxygen species in advanced oxidation processes for environmental remediation. Despite single-atom catalysts (SACs) representing the promising candidate for the selective generation of 1O2 from peroxymonosulfate (PMS), the necessity to meticulously regulate the coordination environment of metal centers poses a significant challenge in the precisely-controlled synthetic method. Another dilemma to SACs is their high surface free energy, which results in an inherent tendency for the surface migration and aggregation of metal atoms. We here for the first time reported that Ru nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by the facile pyrolysis method behave as robust Fenton-like catalysts, outperforming Ru SACs, towards efficient activation of PMS to produce 1O2 with nearly 100 % selectivity, remarkably improving the degradation efficiency for target pollutants. Density functional theory calculations have unveiled that the boosted PMS activation can be attributed to two aspects: (i) enhanced adsorption of PMS molecules onto Ru NPs, and (ii) decreased energy barriers by offering adjacent sites for promoted dimerization of *O intermediates into adsorbed 1O2. This study deepens the current understanding of PMS chemistry, and sheds light on the design and optimization of Fenton-like catalysts.

Development of a Five-Chemical-Probe Method to Determine Multiple Radicals Simultaneously in Hydroxyl and Sulfate Radical-Mediated Advanced Oxidation Processes

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as hydroxyl radical (HO•)- and sulfate radical (SO4•-)-mediated oxidation, are attractive technologies used in water and wastewater treatments. To evaluate the treatment efficiencies of AOPs, monitoring the primary radicals (HO• and SO4•-) as well as the secondary radicals generated from the reaction of HO•/SO4•- with water matrices is necessary. Therefore, we developed a novel chemical probe method to examine five key radicals simultaneously, including HO•, SO4•-, Cl•, Cl2•-, and CO3•-. Five probes, including nitrobenzene, para-chlorobenzoic acid, benzoic acid, 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoic acid, and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, were selected in this study. Their bimolecular reaction rate constants with diverse radicals were first calibrated under the same conditions to minimize systematic errors. Three typical AOPs (UV/H2O2, UV/S2O82-, and UV/HSO5-) were tested to obtain the radical steady-state concentrations. The effects of dissolved organic matter, Br-, and the probe concentration were inspected. Our results suggest that the five-probe method can accurately measure radicals in the HO•- and SO4•--mediated AOPs when the concentration of Br- and DOM are less than 4.0 μM and 15 mgC L-1, respectively. Overall, the five-probe method is a practical and easily accessible method to determine multiple radicals simultaneously.

Environmental fate and risk evolution of calcium channel blockers from chlorine-based disinfection to sunlit surface waters

Organic micropollutants present in disinfected wastewater and discharged to sunlit surface waters may be transformed by multiple processes, such as chlorination due to the presence of chlorine residuals, solar irradiation as well as solar-irradiated chlorine residues. This study reports, for the first time, the multi-scenario degradation kinetics, transformation products, and risk evolution of calcium channel blockers (CCBs), a class of emerging pharmaceutical contaminants with worldwide prevalence in natural waters and wastewater. It was found that the chlorination of the studied CCBs (amlodipine (AML) and verapamil (VER)) was dominated by the reaction of HOCl with their neutral species, with second-order rate constants of 6.15×104 M-1 s-1 (AML) and 7.93×103 M-1 s-1 (VER) at pH 5.0-11.0. Bromination is much faster than chlorination, with the measured kapp,HOBr values of 2.94×105 M-1 s-1 and 6.58×103 M-1 s-1 for AML and VER, respectively, at pH 7.0. Furthermore, both CCBs would undergo photolytic attenuations with hydroxyl and carbonate radicals as the dominant reactive species in water. Notably, free chlorine mainly contributed to their abatement during the solar/chlorine treatment. Additionally, the halogen addition on the aromatic ring was observed during chlorination and bromination of the two CCBs. Cyclization was observed under solar irradiation only, while the aromatic ring was opened in the solar/chlorine system. Some products generated by the three transformation processes exhibited non-negligible risks of high biodegradation recalcitrance and toxicity, potentially threatening the aquatic environment and public health. Overall, this study elucidated the environmental fate of typical CCBs under different transformation processes to better understand the resulting ecological risks in these environmental scenarios.

Phototransformation of phosphite induced by zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in aquatic environments

Phosphite, an essential component in the biogeochemical phosphorus cycle, may make significant contributions to the bioavailable phosphorus pool as well as water eutrophication. However, to date, the potential impacts of coexisting photochemically active substances on the environmental fate and transformation of phosphite in aquatic environments have been sparsely elucidated. In the present study, the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), a widely distributed photocatalyst in aquatic environments, on phosphite phototransformation under simulated solar irradiation was systematically investigated. The physicochemical characteristics of the pristine and reacted ZnO NPs were thoroughly characterized. The results showed that the presence of ZnO NPs induced the indirect phototransformation of phosphite to phosphate, and the reaction rate increased with increasing ZnO NPs concentration. Through experiments with quenching and trapping free radicals, it was proved that photogenerated reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide anion (O2•-), and singlet oxygen (1O2), made substantial contributions to phosphite phototransformation. In addition, the influencing factors such as initial phosphite concentration, pH, water matrixes (Cl-, F-, Br-, SO42-, NO3-, NO2-, HCO3-, humic acid (HA) and citric acid (CA)) were investigated. The component of generated precipitates after the phosphite phototransformation induced by ZnO NPs was still dominated by ZnO NPs, while the presence of amorphous Zn3(PO4)2 was identified. This work explored ZnO NPs-mediated phosphite phototransformation processes, indicating that nanophotocatalysts released into aquatic environments such as ZnO NPs may function as photosensitizers to play a beneficial role in the transformation of phosphite to phosphate, thereby potentially mitigating the toxicity of phosphite to aquatic organisms while exacerbating eutrophication. The findings of this study provide a novel insight into the comprehensive assessment of the environmental fate, potential ecological risk, and biogeochemical behaviors of phosphite in natural aquatic environments under the condition of combined pollution.

Photobleaching-induced changes in the optical and photochemical properties of algal organic matter

Algal organic matter (AOM), a significant source of endogenous dissolved organic matter (DOM) is released in high concentrations during cyanobacterial blooms, along with cyanotoxins. Subsequent photobleaching of AOM is an important phenomenon to investigate. In this study, intracellular organic matter (IOM) and extracellular organic matter (EOM) were extracted from cultured cyanobacteria taken from Taihu Lake in China. The formation of photochemically produced reactive intermediates in different stages of IOM and EOM photobleaching was compared to Suwannee River DOM (SRDOM, reference standard DOM). Results revealed notable differences influenced by the pigment component among IOM, EOM, and SRDOM. The pigment in IOM contributed to a triplet state pool with strong energy-transfer but limited electron-transfer capabilities. Notably, IOM exhibited the highest triplets state quantum yield value in the visible region, suggesting its potential significance in pollutant degradation in deeper water layers. For EOM, one of the pools exhibits photolability and remarkable electron-transfer capability, indicating it as a high-energy triplet state component. Moreover, three cyanotoxins (MC-LR, ACA, and ATX-a) were detected in the extracted AOM, and their photodegradation was monitored during the AOM photobleaching process. This highlights the potential role of AOM as a photosensitizer in the natural self-cleaning mechanisms of water bodies, facilitating the degradation of organic pollutants through photochemical reactions. The findings of this study contribute to understanding the dynamic nature of AOM and its implications in environmental processes.

Fate and environmental behaviors of microplastics through the lens of free radical

Microplastics (MPs), as plastics with a size of less than 5 mm, are ubiquitously present in the environment and become an increasing environmental concern. The fate and environmental behavior of MPs are significantly influenced by the presence of free radicals. Free radicals can cause surface breakage, chemical release, change in crystallinity and hydrophilicity, and aggregation of MPs. On the other hand, the generation of free radicals with a high concentration and oxidation potential can effectively degrade MPs. There is a limited review article to bridge the fate and environmental behaviors of MP with free radicals and their reactions. This paper reviews the sources, types, detection methods, generation mechanisms, and influencing factors of free radicals affecting the environmental processes of MPs, the environmental effects of MPs controlled by free radicals, and the degradation strategies of MPs based on free radical-associated technologies. Moreover, this review elaborates on the limitations of the current research and provides ideas for future research on the interactions between MPs and free radicals to better explain their environmental impacts and control their risks. This article aims to keep the reader abreast of the latest development in the fate and environmental behaviors of MP with free radicals and their reactions and to bridge free radical chemistry with MP control methodology.

Ferrate(VI) mediated degradation of the potent cyanotoxin, cylindrospermopsin: Kinetics, products, and toxicity

The presence of cylindrospermopsin (CYN), a potent cyanotoxin, in drinking water sources poses a tremendous risk to humans and the environment. Detailed kinetic studies herein demonstrate ferrate(VI) (Fe^VIO₄^2-, Fe(VI)) mediated oxidation of CYN and the model compound 6-hydroxymethyl uracil (6-HOMU) lead to their effective degradation under neutral and alkaline solution pH. A transformation product analysis indicated oxidation of the uracil ring, which has functionality critical to the toxicity of CYN. The oxidative cleavage of the C5=C6 double bond resulted in fragmentation of the uracil ring. Amide hydrolysis is a contributing pathway leading to the fragmentation of the uracil ring. Under extended treatment, hydrolysis, and extensive oxidation lead to complete destruction of the uracil ring skeleton, resulting in the generation of a variety of products including nontoxic cylindrospermopsic acid. The ELISA biological activity of the CYN product mixtures produced during Fe(VI) treatment parallels the concentration of CYN. These results suggest the products do not possess ELISA biological activity at the concentrations produced during treatment. The Fe(VI) mediated degradation was also effective in the presence of humic acid and unaffected by the presence of common inorganic ions under our experimental conditions. The Fe(VI) remediation of CYN and uracil based toxins appears a promising drinking water treatment process.

Targeted Decomplexation of Metal Complexes for Efficient Metal Recovery by Ozone/Percarbonate

Traditional methods cannot efficiently recover Cu from Cu(II)-EDTA wastewater and encounter the formation of secondary contaminants. In this study, an ozone/percarbonate (O₃/SPC) process was proposed to efficiently decomplex Cu(II)-EDTA and simultaneously recover Cu. The results demonstrate that the O₃/SPC process achieves 100% recovery of Cu with the corresponding k_obs value of 0.103 min^-1 compared with the typical ^•OH-based O₃/H₂O₂ process (81.2%, 0.042 min^-1). The carbonate radical anion (CO₃^•-) is generated from the O₃/SPC process and carries out the targeted attack of amino groups of Cu(II)-EDTA for decarboxylation and deamination processes, resulting in successive cleavage of Cu-O and Cu-N bonds. In comparison, the ^•OH-based O₃/H₂O₂ process is predominantly responsible for the breakage of Cu-O bonds via decarboxylation and formic acid removal. Moreover, the released Cu(II) can be transformed into stable copper precipitates by employing an endogenous precipitant (CO₃^2-), accompanied by toxic-free byproducts in the O₃/SPC process. More importantly, the O₃/SPC process exhibits excellent metal recovery in the treatment of real copper electroplating wastewater and other metal-EDTA complexes. This study provides a promising technology and opens a new avenue for the efficient decomplexation of metal-organic complexes with simultaneous recovery of valuable metal resources.

Quantification of the diverse inhibitory effects of dissolved organic matter on transformation of micropollutants in UV/persulfate treatment

Dissolved organic matter (DOM), ubiquitous in natural waters, is known to inhibit the degradation of micropollutants in the advanced oxidation processes such as the UV/peroxydisulfate process. However, the quantitative understanding of the inhibitory pathways is missing. In this study, guanosine, aniline and catechol belonging to amines, purines and phenols were first investigated due to their resistance to UV irradiation at 254 nm and similar reactivity with SO₄^•- and HO^•, respectively. The presence of 0.5 mg_C L^-1 Suwannee River NOM (SRNOM) inhibited their degradation rates by 72.9%, 54.5%, and 32.4%, respectively, despite their similar degradation rates in the absence of SRNOM. The results highlight the importance of reverse reduction of oxidation intermediates to the parent compound by antioxidant moieties in SRNOM besides the inner filtering and radical scavenging effects. The three inhibitory pathways were quantified for 34 common micropollutants. In the presence of 0.5 mg_C L^-1 SRNOM, inner filtering effect was found to contribute less than 2.8% of the inhibitory percentages (IP). Radical scavenging effects contribute between 10.7% and 38.9% and compounds having lower reactivity with SO₄^•- (< 4.0 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1) tended to be inhibited more strongly. The IP of reverse reduction effects of SRNOM varied significantly from none up to 70.8%. It was linearly related with a micropollutant's reduction potential. Purines and amines generally exhibited more pronounced reverse reduction inhibition than phenols. The results of this study provide guidance on improving the elimination efficiency of micropollutants.

Phototransformation of the fungicide tebuconazole, and its predicted fate in sunlit surface freshwaters

The fungicide tebuconazole (TBCZ) is expected to undergo negligible direct photolysis in surface freshwaters, but it can be degraded by indirect photochemistry. TBCZ mainly reacts with hydroxyl radicals and, to a lesser extent, with the triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (³CDOM*). Indirect photochemistry is strongly affected by environmental conditions, and TBCZ lifetimes of about one week are expected in sunlit surface waters under favourable circumstances (shallow waters with low concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, DOC, during summer). In these cases, the time trend would follow pseudo-first order kinetics (mono-exponential decay). Under less favourable conditions, photoinduced degradation would span over a few or several months, and TBCZ phototransformation would depart from an exponential trend because of seasonally changing sunlight irradiance. The TBCZ phototransformation products should be less toxic than their parent compound,thus photodegradation has potential to decrease the environmental impact of TBCZ. Hydroxylation is a major TBCZ transformation route, due to either OH attack, or one-electron oxidation sensitised by ³CDOM*, followed by reaction of the oxidised transient with oxygen and water.

Inorganic anions influenced the photoaging kinetics and mechanism of polystyrene microplastic under the simulated sunlight: Role of reactive radical species

The photo-transformation of microplastic (MP) in natural water may involve interactions with various ingredients, but the photoaging kinetics and underlying mechanism are not well understood. This work systematically explored the photoaging process of polystyrene microplastic (PS-MP) in the presence of commonly-found inorganic anions, including NO₃^-, HCO₃^-, Br^- and Cl^-. The addition of these ions led to more obvious changes in the morphology, functional groups and molecular weight of photoaging PS-MP. The evolution of carbonyl index value for the photoaged samples conformed to pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the photoaging rate constant (k) in the presence of inorganic anions at their environmentally relevant concentrations of 0.6 mM, 1.2 mM, 0.1 M and 0.1 mM was calculated to be k_HCO3- = 0.0074 d^-1, k_NO3- = 0.01001 d^-1, k_Cl- = 0.00783 d^-1, and k_Br- = 0.00888 d^-1, which was higher than that in ultrapure water (k=0.00705 d^-1). Electron paramagnetic resonance technique and quenching experiments demonstrated that photo-transformation of PS-MP was mainly mediated by indirect photolysis, i.e., the formation of reactive radical species. The photosensitivity of NO₃^- promoted more •OH production, thereby accelerated the indirect photoaging of PS-MP. Meanwhile, the presence of halide ions promoted the generation of reactive halogen species, which were also involved in the indirect photoaging of PS-MP. Interestingly, as •OH scavenger, HCO₃^- had no inhibitory effect on PS-MP photoaging, attributing to the oxidation of CO₃^•-. This study provides valuable insights into the understanding of photo-transformation of MPs in natural aquatic environments.

Phytotoxic effects of microcystins, anatoxin-a and cylindrospermopsin to aquatic plants: A meta-analysis

Global warming and eutrophication may lead to increased incidence of harmful algal blooms and related production of cyanotoxins that can be toxic to aquatic plants. Previous studies have evaluated the phytotoxic effects of cyanotoxins on aquatic plants. However, most studies have evaluated only a limited number of plant species and cyanotoxins; there is also considerable variability between studies, which obscures general patterns and hinders understanding of the phytotoxic effects of cyanotoxins. Here, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis by compiling 41 published papers to estimate the phytotoxic effects of anatoxin-a, cylindrospermopsin, and microcystins in 34 species of aquatic plants, with the aim of 1) investigating the phytotoxicity of different cyanotoxins to aquatic plants; 2) determining the aquatic plant species most sensitive to the phytotoxic effects of cyanotoxins; and 3) evaluating the bioaccumulation potential of cyanotoxins in aquatic plants. Most aquatic plants were negatively affected by cyanotoxin exposure and their response was dose-dependent; however, morphological indicators and photosynthesis of certain aquatic plants were marginally stimulated under low concentrations of anatoxin-a and cylindrospermopsin. Anatoxin-a showed the greatest bioaccumulation capacity in aquatic plants compared to cylindrospermopsin and microcystin variants. Bioaccumulation factors of cyanotoxins in aquatic plants generally decreased with increasing water exposure concentrations. Our study supports the One Health goal to manage the risk of public exposure to toxic substances, and indicates that cyanotoxins warrant further investigations in aquatic plants. Environmental managers and public health authorities need to be alert to the long-term exposure and chronic toxicity of cyanotoxins, and the potential trophic transfer of cyanotoxins from aquatic plants to higher-order organisms.

Inhibition by phenolic antioxidants of the degradation of aromatic amines and sulfadiazine by the carbonate radical (CO3•-)

The carbonate radical CO3•- and the excited triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter play an important role in the photodegradation of some easily oxidized pollutants in surface waters, such as the aromatic amines. Anilines and sulfadiazine are known to undergo back-reduction processes when their degradation is mediated by the excited triplet states of photosensitizers (triplet sensitization). Back-reduction, which inhibits photodegradation, means that phenols or the antioxidant (mostly phenolic) moieties occurring in the natural dissolved organic matter of surface waters reduce, back to the parent compounds, the radical species derived from the mono-electronic oxidation of anilines and sulfadiazine. Here we show that a similar process takes place as well in the case of substrate oxidation by CO3•-. The carbonate radical was here produced upon oxidation of HCO3-/CO32- by either HO•, generated by nitrate photolysis, or SO4•-, obtained by photolysis of persulfate. Back-reduction was observed in both cases in the presence of phenols, but at different extents as far as the details of reaction kinetics are concerned, and the occurrence of additional reductants might affect the efficacy by which phenols carry out the reduction process. In particular, when the carbonate radicals were produced by NO3- photolysis in the presence of HCO3-/CO32-, the numerical values of [PhOH]1/2 (the phenol concentration that halves the photodegradation rate of the substrate) were 2.19 ± 0.23 µM for aniline, 1.15 ± 0.25 µM for 3-chloroaniline, 1.18 ± 0.26 µM for 4-chloroaniline, and 1.18 ± 0.22 µM for 3,4-dichloroaniline. In contrast, when CO3•- was produced by photolysis of persulfate in the presence of HCO3-/CO32-, the corresponding values were 0.28 ± 0.02 µM for aniline and 0.79 ± 0.10 µM for sulfadiazine. Back-reduction has the potential to significantly inhibit photodegradation by CO3•- and excited triplet states in natural waters, and to comparatively increase the importance of HO•-mediated degradation that is not affected by the same phenomenon.

Role of Antioxidant Moieties in the Quenching of a Purine Radical by Dissolved Organic Matter

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been known to inhibit the degradation of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in advanced oxidation processes but quantitative understanding is lacking. Adenine (ADN) was selected as a model TrOC due to the wide occurrence of purine groups in TrOCs and the well-documented transient spectra of its intermediate radicals. ADN degradation in the presence of DOM during UV/peroxydisulfate treatment was quantified using steady-state photochemical experiments, time-resolved spectroscopy, and kinetic modeling. The inhibitory effects of DOM were found to include competing for photons, scavenging SO₄^•- and HO^•, and also converting intermediate ADN radicals (ADN(-H)^•) back into ADN. Half of the ADN(-H)^• were reduced back to ADN in the presence of about 0.2 mg_C L^-1 of DOM. The quenching rate constants of ADN(-H)^• by the 10 tested DOM isolates were in the range of (0.39-1.18) × 10⁷ M_C^-1 s^-1. They showed a positive linear relationship with the total antioxidant capacity of DOM. The laser flash photolysis results of the low-molecular-weight analogues of redox-active moieties further supported the dominant role of antioxidant moieties in DOM in the quenching of ADN(-H)^•. The diverse roles of DOM should be considered in predicting the abatement of TrOCs in advanced oxidation processes.

Toward Selective Oxidation of Contaminants in Aqueous Systems

The presence of diverse pollutants in water has been threating human health and aquatic ecosystems on a global scale. For more than a century, chemical oxidation using strongly oxidizing species was one of the most effective technologies to destruct pollutants and to ensure a safe and clean water supply. However, the removal of increasing amount of pollutants with higher structural complexity, especially the emerging micropollutants with trace concentrations in the complicated water matrix, requires excessive dosage of oxidant and/or energy input, resulting in a low cost-effectiveness and possible secondary pollution. Consequently, it is of practical significance but scientifically challenging to achieve selective oxidation of pollutants of interest for water decontamination. Currently, there are a variety of examples concerning selective oxidation of pollutants in aqueous systems. However, a systematic understanding of the relationship between the origin of selectivity and its applicable water treatment scenarios, as well as the rational design of catalyst for selective catalytic oxidation, is still lacking. In this critical review, we summarize the state-of-the-art selective oxidation strategies in water decontamination and probe the origins of selectivity, that is, the selectivity resulting from the reactivity of either oxidants or target pollutants, the selectivity arising from the accessibility of pollutants to oxidants via adsorption and size exclusion, as well as the selectivity due to the interfacial electron transfer process and enzymatic oxidation. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are briefly outlined to stimulate future discussion and interest on selective oxidation for water decontamination, particularly toward application in real scenarios.

Degradation of norfloxacin by calcite activating peroxymonosulfate: Performance and mechanism

In this study, calcite was investigated as an activator for the norfloxacin (NOR) degradation by peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Under optimum conditions, the NOR removal percentage was 99.7% within 60 min, and the pseudo-first-order kinetics effectively described the two-stage oxidation process. The NOR removal percentage improved from 10.4% to 91.5% and the reaction rate constant elevated from 0.0010 to 0.1217 min^-1 when 0.5 g/L calcite was added compared to that without calcite addition. Furthermore, the results of radical scavenger and electron spin resonance trapping indicated that the favorable alkaline environment and a proper level of carbonate in the Calcite/PMS system facilitated the activation of PMS to generate ¹O₂ for rapid NOR degradation. Compared with NaOH, calcite was able to maintain the pH (8-9) of the reaction system stable. Besides, the content of anions with buffering capacity and organic matter in the water matrix influenced the removal percentage of NOR. Seven intermediates were identified and the NOR degradation pathways were suggested. The findings of this research provided an environmentally friendly activator for remediation of organic wastewater and deepened the understanding of the interaction between calcium carbonate and PMS.

Foreseen Effects of Climate-Impacted Scenarios on the Photochemical Fate of Selected Cyanotoxins in Surface Freshwaters

Cyanobacteria populate most water environments, and their ability to effectively exploit light and nutrients provide them with a competitive advantage over other life forms. In particular conditions, cyanobacteria may experience considerable growth and give rise to the so-called harmful algal blooms (HABs). HABs are often characterized by the production of cyanotoxins, which cause adverse effects to both aquatic organisms and humans and even threaten drinking water supplies. The concentration of cyanotoxins in surface waters results from the budget between production by cyanobacteria and transformation, including photodegradation under sunlight exposure. Climate change will likely provide favorable conditions for HABs, which are expected to increase in frequency over both space and time. Moreover, climate change could modify the ability of some surface waters to induce phototransformation reactions. Photochemical modeling is here carried out for two cyanotoxins of known photoreaction kinetics (microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin), which follow different phototransformation pathways and for particular freshwater scenarios (summertime stratification in lakes, water browning, and evaporative water concentration). On this basis, it is possible to quantitatively predict that the expected changes in water-column conditions under a changing climate would enhance photodegradation of those cyanotoxins that are significantly transformed by reaction with the triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (³CDOM*). This is known to be the case for microcystin-LR, for which faster photodegradation in some environments would at least partially offset enhanced occurrence. Unfortunately, very few data are currently available for the role of ³CDOM* in the degradation of other cyanotoxins, which is a major knowledge gap in understanding the link between cyanotoxin photodegradation and changing climate.

Mechanism of bicarbonate enhancing the photodegradation of β-blockers in natural waters

The impact of HCO₃^- on the photodegradation of β-blockers was investigated under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results show that in the presence of HCO₃^-, the photodegradation rates increase significantly for sotalol (SOT), whereas no effects on the degradation of carvedilol and arotinolol are observed. Using quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and degradation product determination, we demonstrate that carbonate radical (CO₃^•-) is formed by direct oxidation of HCO₃^- by triplet-excited SOT (³SOT*) and plays a significant role in SOT photodegradation. Competition kinetics experiments show that the three β-blockers all have high second-order rate constants (10⁷-10⁸ M^-1 s^-1) for the reaction with CO₃^•-. However, only ³SOT* has a higher reduction potential that can oxidize HCO₃^- to produce CO₃^•-. Thus, enhanced SOT removal rates in the presence of HCO₃^- were observed. In addition, the results show that seawater DOM could increase HCO₃^--induced photodegradation of SOT, whereas SRNOM mainly behaves as a CO₃^•- quencher and decreases the removal rate of SOT. The results underscore the role of HCO₃^- in limiting the persistence of organic pollutants like SOT in sunlit natural waters, and especially in marine and coastal waters.

Four decades of progress in cylindrospermopsin research: The ins and outs of a potent cyanotoxin

The cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin (CYN), a toxic metabolite from cyanobacteria, is of particular concern due to its cosmopolitan occurrence, aquatic bioaccumulation, and multi-organ toxicity. CYN is the second most often recorded cyanotoxin worldwide, and cases of human morbidity and animal mortality are associated with ingestion of CYN contaminated water. The toxin poses a great challenge for drinking water treatment plants and public health authorities. CYN, with the major toxicity manifested in the liver, is cytotoxic, genotoxic, immunotoxic, neurotoxic and may be carcinogenic. Adverse effects are also reported for endocrine and developmental processes. We present a comprehensive review of CYN over the past four decades since its first reported poisoning event, highlighting its global occurrence, biosynthesis, toxicology, removal, and monitoring. In addition, current data gaps are identified, and future directions for CYN research are outlined. This review is beneficial for understanding the ins and outs of this environmental pollutant, and for robustly assessing health hazards posed by CYN exposure to humans and other organisms.

Reevaluation of the contributions of reactive intermediates to the photochemical transformation of 17β-estradiol in sewage effluent

Photodegradation of the natural steroid 17β-estradiol (E2), an endocrine-disrupting hormone that has been widely detected in aquatic environments, was investigated in wastewater effluents at various pH ranges under simulated solar irradiation. The rate of E2 degradation in the sewage effluents was stable at pH 6.0-7.0 but suddenly increased from pH 8.0-10.0. The second-order reaction rate constants of E2 with ³EfOM* and CO₃^•- were measured to increase 11.0-fold and 18.0-fold from pH 6.0 to 10.0, respectively. Two main reasons are proposed for this sharp increase. First, the change in the ionization state of E2 made it susceptible to oxidation by triplet-state effluent organic matter (³EfOM*) and carbonate radicals (CO₃^•-). Second, the steady-state concentration of CO₃^•- increased with increasing pH. Indirect photolysis was suggested to be the main degradation pathway in the sewage effluents, and ³EfOM* was proposed to play a major role at pH 8.0-9.0, while CO₃^•- played a significant role at pH 10.0. In this study, EfOM was shown for the first time to inhibit the oxidation of E2 initiated by ³EfOM* and CO₃^•-. Thus, we suggest that EfOM plays a dual role in the photodegradation of E2: EfOM can not only be activated as ³EfOM* to degrade E2 but also can inhibit the degradation of E2 by reducing the E2 oxidation intermediate back to E2. The estrogenic activity of the photodegradation products was also studied. The in vitro estrogenic activity of E2 solutions decreased approximately as fast as the E2 photodegradation occurred in the effluent water at various pH values, suggesting that solar photodegradation in sewage effluents reduces the risk of endocrine disruption in waters impacted by E2 and subject to continuing inputs. The results of this study are important for predicting the environmental fate of endocrine-disrupting chemicals and developing methods for their removal from aquatic environments.
