Fungal-Mineral Interactions Modulating Intrinsic Peroxidase-like Activity of Iron Nanoparticles: Implications for the Biogeochemical Cycles of Nutrient Elements and Attenuation of Contaminants

Stability of sedimentary organic matter: Insights from molecular and redox analyses

Sedimentary organic matter (SOM) affects the stability of the aquatic carbon pool. The degradation process of SOM is complex for its multifaceted composition. The concentration and properties of SOM affect its steady state, yet the transformation processes of SOM in lakes remain unclear. Here we show the molecular and redox perspectives of SOM stability in polluted sediments with high organic matter content and diverse vegetation. We find significant differences in carbon fractions across various sites. The origin of the organic matter, determined using excitation-emission matrix spectra, influences the consistency of organic matter composition and biochemical degradation in lacustrine sediment. We also observe that sulfur-containing substances decrease carbon chain length and reduce organic matter stability. Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry shows that sulfur-containing substances decrease the degree of saturation and cause reduction. In contrast, nitrogen-containing compounds increase the modified aromaticity index and humin content, enhancing organic carbon complexity and stability (p < 0.05). These results complement the characteristics and transformations of SOM. In a broader perspective, this study contributes to laying the foundation for understanding SOM stability in the carbon cycle and its future effects.

Biogeochemical process governing cadmium availability in sediments of typical coastal wetlands driven by drying-wetting alternation

Fluctuations in water levels within coastal wetlands can significantly affect cadmium (Cd) cycling and behavior in sediments. Understanding the effects of drying-wetting cycles on Cd availability and binding mechanisms is crucial. However, information regarding this subject remains limited. This study conducted incubation experiments employing chemical extraction, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and microbiological analysis to investigate the Cd behavior under these conditions. The results from a 40-day anaerobic incubation followed by a 20-day aerobic phase indicated that the drying-wetting cycles triggered fluctuations in physicochemical parameters (e.g., pH, EC, and reactive iron (Fed)), affecting Cd mobility. The mobility of Cd was closely linked to nanozyme activity (R2=0.63), exhibiting a strong correlation with Fed (R2=0.51). This suggested that the drying-wetting cycles induced Fed changes, which regulated the nanozyme activity, thereby affecting Cd availability. The changes in Cd availability were strongly linked to transformations in iron oxides and organic functional groups (carboxylic-OH and aliphatic C-H), whereas the bacterial community composition, particularly Bacilli and Clostridia, notably influenced Cd accessibility. These findings offer valuable insights into the geochemical dynamics of Cd in coastal wetland sediments under alternating drying-wetting cycles, enhancing our understanding of its biogeochemical cycling and potential risks.

Isolation of a methyl-reducing methanogen outside the Euryarchaeota

Methanogenic archaea are main contributors to methane emissions, and have a crucial role in carbon cycling and global warming. Until recently, methanogens were confined to Euryarchaeota, but metagenomic studies revealed the presence of genes encoding the methyl coenzyme M reductase complex in other archaeal clades1-4, thereby opening up the premise that methanogenesis is taxonomically more widespread. Nevertheless, laboratory cultivation of these non-euryarchaeal methanogens was lacking to corroborate their potential methanogenic ability and physiology. Here we report the isolation of a thermophilic archaeon LWZ-6 from an oil field. This archaeon belongs to the class Methanosuratincolia (originally affiliated with 'Candidatus Verstraetearchaeota') in the phylum Thermoproteota. Methanosuratincola petrocarbonis LWZ-6 is a strict hydrogen-dependent methylotrophic methanogen. Although previous metagenomic studies speculated on the fermentative potential of Methanosuratincolia members, strain LWZ-6 does not ferment sugars, peptides or amino acids. Its energy metabolism is linked only to methanogenesis, with methanol and monomethylamine as electron acceptors and hydrogen as an electron donor. Comparative (meta)genome analysis confirmed that hydrogen-dependent methylotrophic methanogenesis is a widespread trait among Methanosuratincolia. Our findings confirm that the diversity of methanogens expands beyond the classical Euryarchaeota and imply the importance of hydrogen-dependent methylotrophic methanogenesis in global methane emissions and carbon cycle.

Mesoporous Oxidized Mn-Ca Nanoparticles as Potential Antimicrobial Agents for Wound Healing

Managing chronic non-healing wounds presents a significant clinical challenge due to their frequent bacterial infections. Mesoporous silica-based materials possess robust wound-healing capabilities attributed to their renowned antimicrobial properties. The current study details the advancement of mesoporous silicon-loaded MnO and CaO molecules (HMn-Ca) against bacterial infections and chronic non-healing wounds. HMn-Ca was synthesized by reducing manganese chloride and calcium chloride by urotropine solution with mesoporous silicon as the template, thereby transforming the manganese and calcium ions on the framework of mesoporous silicon. The developed HMn-Ca was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-visible), and visible spectrophotometry, followed by the determination of Zeta potential. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was determined by using the 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation reaction. The wound healing effectiveness of the synthesized HMn-Ca is evaluated in a bacterial-infected mouse model. The loading of MnO and CaO inside mesoporous silicon enhanced the generation of ROS and the capacity of bacterial capture, subsequently decomposing the bacterial membrane, leading to the puncturing of the bacterial membrane, followed by cellular demise. As a result, treatment with HMn-Ca could improve the healing of the bacterial-infected wound, illustrating a straightforward yet potent method for engineering nanozymes tailored for antibacterial therapy.

Fungal biomineralization of toxic metals accelerates organic pollutant removal

Fungal biomineralization plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of metals in the environment and has been extensively explored for bioremediation and element biorecovery. However, the cellular and metabolic responses of fungi in the presence of toxic metals during biomineralization and their impact on organic matter transformations are unclear. This is an important question because co-contamination by toxic metals and organic pollutants is a common phenomenon in the natural environment. In this research, the biomineralization process and oxidative stress response of the geoactive soil fungus Aspergillus niger were investigated in the presence of toxic metals (Co, Cu, Mn, and Fe) and the azo dye orange II (AO II). We have found that the co-existence of toxic metals and AO II not only enhanced the fungal biomineralization of toxic metals but also accelerated the removal of AO II. We hypothesize that the fungus and in situ mycogenic biominerals (toxic metal oxalates) constituted a quasi-bioreactor, where the biominerals removed organic pollutants by catalyzing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation resulting from oxidative stress. We have therefore demonstrated that a fungal/biomineral system can successfully achieve the goal of toxic metal immobilization and organic pollutant decomposition. Such findings inform the potential development of fungal-biomineral hybrid systems for mixed pollutant bioremediation as well as provide further understanding of fungal organic-inorganic pollutant transformations in the environment and their importance in biogeochemical cycles.

A novel remediation strategy of mixed calcium peroxide and degrading bacteria for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contaminated water

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of toxic organic pollutants commonly detected in the aqueous phase. Traditional biodegradation is inefficient and advanced oxidation technologies are expensive. In the current study, a novel strategy was developed using calcium peroxide (CP) and PAH-degrading bacteria (PDB) to effectively augment PAH degradation by 28.62-59.22%. The PDB consisted of the genera Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, and Comamonas. Applying the response surface model (RSM), the most appropriate parameters were identified, and the predictive degradation rates of phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr), and ΣPAHs were 98%, 76%, and 84%, respectively. The constructed mixed system could reduce 90% of Phe and more than 60% of ΣPAHs and will perform better at pH 5-7 and lower salinity. Because PAHs tend to bind to dissolved organic matter (DOM) with larger molecular weights, humic acid (HA) had a larger negative effect on the PAH-degradation efficiency of the CP-PDB mixed system than fulvic acid (FA). The proposed PAH-degradation pathways in the mixed system were based on the detection of intermediates at different times. The investigation constructed and optimized a novel environmental PAH-degradation strategy. The synergistic application of PDB and oxidation was extended for organic contaminant degradation in aqueous environments.

One-Step Synthesis of Hollow CoS2 Spheres Derived from Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Peroxidase-like Activity

In this work, hollow CoS2 particles were prepared by a one-step sulfurization strategy using polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks as the precursor. The morphology and structure of CoS2 have been monitored by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction. The mechanism for the formation of CoS2 is discussed. The reaction time and sulfur content are found to be important factors that affect the morphology and pure phase formation of CoS2, and a hollow semioctahedral morphology of CoS2 with open voids was obtained when the sulfur source was twice as large as the precursor and the reaction time was 24 h. The CoS2 (24 h) particles show an excellent peroxidase-like activity for the oxidation of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxidized (oxTMB) by hydrogen peroxide. The polyoxometalate used as a precursor helps to stabilize oxTMB during catalytic oxidation, forming a stable curve platform for at least 8 min. Additionally, the colorimetric detection of hydroquinone is developed with a low detection limit of 0.42 μM. This research provides a new strategy to design hollow materials with high peroxidase-mimicking activity.

A natural biogenic nanozyme for scavenging superoxide radicals

Biominerals, the inorganic minerals of organisms, are known mainly for their physical property-related functions in modern living organisms. Our recent discovery of the enzyme-like activities of nanomaterials, coined as nanozyme, inspires the hypothesis that nano-biominerals might function as enzyme-like catalyzers in cells. Here we report that the iron cores of biogenic ferritins act as natural nanozymes to scavenge superoxide radicals. Through analyzing eighteen representative ferritins from three living kingdoms, we find that the iron core of prokaryote ferritin possesses higher superoxide-diminishing activity than that of eukaryotes. Further investigation reveals that the differences in catalytic capability result from the iron/phosphate ratio changes in the iron core, which is mainly determined by the structures of ferritins. The phosphate in the iron core switches the iron core from single crystalline to amorphous iron phosphate-like structure, resulting in decreased affinity to the hydrogen proton of the ferrihydrite-like core that facilitates its reaction with superoxide in a manner different from that of ferric ions. Furthermore, overexpression of ferritins with high superoxide-diminishing activities in E. coli increases the resistance to superoxide, whereas bacterioferritin knockout or human ferritin knock-in diminishes free radical tolerance, highlighting the physiological antioxidant role of this type of nanozymes.

Unrecognized Role of Organic Acid in Natural Attenuation of Pollutants by Mackinawite (FeS): The Significance of Carbon-Center Free Radicals

Organic acid is prevalent in underground environments and, against the backdrop of biogeochemical cycles on Earth, holds significant importance in the degradation of contaminants by redox-active minerals. While earlier studies on the role of organic acid in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) primarily concentrated on electron shuttle or ligand effects, this study delves into the combined impacts of organic acid decomposition and Mackinawite (FeS) oxidation in contaminant transformation under dark aerobic conditions. Using bisphenol A (BPA) as a model, our findings showed that oxalic acid (OA) notably outperforms other acids in enhancing BPA removal, attaining a rate constant of 0.69 h-1. Mass spectrometry characterizations, coupled with anaerobic treatments, advocate for molecule-O2 activation as the principal mechanism behind pollutant transformation. Comprehensive results unveiled that carbon center radicals, initiated by hydroxyl radical (•OH) attack, serve as the primary agents in pollutant oxidation, accounting for at least 93.6% of the total •OH generation. This dynamic, driven by the decomposition of organic acids and the concurrent formation of carbon-centered radicals, ensures a steady supply of electrons for ROS generation. The obtained information highlights the importance of OA decomposition in the natural attenuation of pollutants and offers innovative strategies for FeS and organic acid-coupled decontamination.

The mechanism of nanozyme activity of ZnO-Co3O4-v: Oxygen vacancy dynamic change and bilayer electron transfer pathway for wound healing and virtual reality revealing

Since the catalyst's surface was the major active location, the inner structure's contribution to catalytic activity was typically overlooked. Here, ZnO-Co3O4-v nanozymes with several surfaces and bulk oxygen vacancies were created. The O atoms of H2O2 moved inward to preferentially fill the oxygen vacancies in the interior and form new "lattice oxygen" by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth analysis and X-ray absorption fine structure. The internal Co2+ continually transferred electrons to the surface for a continuous catalytic reaction, which generated a significant amount of reactive oxygen species. Inner and outer double-layer electron cycles accompanied this process. A three-dimensional model of ZnO-Co3O4-v was constructed using virtual reality interactive modelling technology to illustrate nanozyme catalysis. Moreover, the bactericidal rate of ZnO-Co3O4-v for Methionine-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Multiple drug resistant Escherichia coli was as high as 99%. ZnO-Co3O4-v was biocompatible and might be utilized to heal wounds following Methionine-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection. This work offered a new idea for nanozymes to replace of conventional antibacterial medications.

Quantitative Contribution of Oxygen Vacancy Defects to Arsenate Immobilization on Hematite

Hematite is a common iron oxide in natural environments, which has been observed to influence the transport and fate of arsenate by its association with hematite. Although oxygen vacancies were demonstrated to exist in hematite, their contributions to the arsenate immobilization have not been quantified. In this study, hematite samples with tunable oxygen vacancy defect (OVD) concentrations were synthesized by treating defect-free hematite using different NaBH4 solutions. The vacancy defects were characterized by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, Doppler broadening of annihilation radiation, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), thermogravimetric mass spectrometry (TG-MS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that oxygen vacancy was the primary defect type existing on the hematite surface. TG-MS combined with EPR analysis allowed quantification of OVD concentrations in hematite. Batch experiments revealed that OVDs had a positive effect on arsenate adsorption, which could be quantitatively described by a linear relationship between the OVD concentration (Cdef, mmol m-2) and the enhanced arsenate adsorption amount caused by defects (ΔQm, μmol m-2) (ΔQm = 20.94 Cdef, R2 = 0.9813). NH3-diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (NH3-DRIFT) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that OVDs in hematite were beneficial to the improvement in adsorption strength of surface-active sites, thus considerably promoting the immobilization of arsenate.

The IV International Symposium on Fungal Stress and the XIII International Fungal Biology Conference

For the first time, the International Symposium on Fungal Stress was joined by the XIII International Fungal Biology Conference. The International Symposium on Fungal Stress (ISFUS), always held in Brazil, is now in its fourth edition, as an event of recognized quality in the international community of mycological research. The event held in São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil, in September 2022, featured 33 renowned speakers from 12 countries, including: Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, México, Pakistan, Spain, Slovenia, USA, and UK. In addition to the scientific contribution of the event in bringing together national and international researchers and their work in a strategic area, it helps maintain and strengthen international cooperation for scientific development in Brazil.

Risk assessment and binding mechanisms of potentially toxic metals in sediments from different water levels in a coastal wetland

The excessive accumulation of potentially toxic metals (Pb and Cd) in coastal wetlands is among the main factors threatening wetland ecosystems. However, the effects of water table depth (WTD) on the risk and binding mechanisms of potentially toxic metals in sediments remain unclear. Here, sediments from different WTD obtained from a typical coastal wetland were evaluated using a newly developed strategy based on chemical extraction methods coupled with high-resolution spectroscopy. Our findings indicated that the WTD of the coastal wetland fluctuates frequently and the average enrichment factor for Pb was categorized as minor, whereas Cd enrichment was categorized as moderate. High-resolution spectroscopy techniques also demonstrated that organic functional groups and partly inorganic compounds (e.g., Fe-O/Si-O) played a vital role in the binding of Pb and Cd to surface sediments. Additionally, mineral components rather than organic groups were mainly bound to these metals in the bottom sediments. Collectively, our findings provide key insights into the potential health effects and binding characteristics of potentially toxic metals in sediments, as well as their dynamic behavior under varying sediment depths at a microscale.

Magnetic biochar promotes the risk of mobile genetic elements propagation in sludge anaerobic digestion

Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) mediated horizontal gene transfer is the primary reason for the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes in environment. The behavior of MGEs under magnetic biochar pressure in sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) is still unknown. This study evaluated the effects of different dosage magnetic biochar on the MGEs in AD reactors. The results showed that the biogas yield was highest (106.68 ± 1.16 mL g^-1 VS_added) with adding optimal dosage of magnetic biochar (25 mg g^-1 TS_added), due to it increased the microorganism's abundance involved in hydrolysis and methanogenesis. While, the total absolute abundance of MGEs in the reactors with magnetic biochar addition increased by 11.58%-77.37% compared with the blank reactor. When the dosage of magnetic biochar was 12.5 mg g^-1 TS_added, the relative abundance of most MGEs was the highest. The enrichment effect on ISCR1 was the most significant, and the enrichment rate reached 158.90-214.16%. Only the intI1 abundance was reduced and the removal rates yield 14.38-40.00%, which was inversely proportional to the dosage of magnetic biochar. Co-occurrence network explored that Proteobacteria (35.64%), Firmicutes (19.80%) and Actinobacteriota (15.84%) were the main potential host of MGEs. Magnetic biochar changed MGEs abundance by affecting the potential MGEs-host community structure and abundance. Redundancy analysis and variation partitioning analysis showed that the combined effect of polysaccharides, protein and sCOD exhibited the greatest contribution (accounted for 34.08%) on MGEs variation. These findings demonstrated that magnetic biochar increases the risk of MGEs proliferation in AD system.

Organic carbon preservation in wetlands: Iron oxide protection vs. thermodynamic limitation

The sequestration of organic carbon (OC) in wetland sediments is influenced by the presence of oxygen or lack thereof. The mechanisms of OC sequestration under redox fluctuations, particularly by the co-mediation of reactive iron (Fe) protection and thermodynamic limitation by the energetics of the OC itself, remain unclear. Over the past 26 years, a combination of field surveys and remote sensing images had revealed a strong decline in both natural and constructed wetland areas in Tianjin. This decline could be attributed to anthropogenic landfill practices and agricultural reclamation efforts, which may have significant impacts on the oxidation-reduction conditions for sedimentary OC. The Fe-bound OC (CBD extraction) decreased by 2 to 10-fold (from 8.3 to 10% to 0.7-4.5%) with increasing sediment depth at three sites with varying water depths (WD). The high-resolution spectro-microscopy analysis demonstrated that Fe (oxyhydr)oxides were colocalized with sedimentary OC. Corresponding to lower redox potential, the nominal oxidation state of C (NOSC), which corresponds to the energy content in OC, became more negative (energy content increased) with increasing sediment depth. Taken together, the preservation of sedimentary OC is contingent on the prevailing redox conditions: In environments where oxygen availability is high, reactive Fe provides protection for OC, while in anoxic environments, thermodynamic constraints (i.e., energetic constraints) limit the oxidation of OC.

Lighting Up Agricultural Sustainability in the New Era through Nanozymology: An Overview of Classifications and Their Agricultural Applications

With the concept of sustainable agriculture receiving increasing attention from humankind, nanozymes, nanomaterials with enzyme-like activity but higher environmental endurance and longer-term stability than natural enzymes, have enabled agricultural technologies to be reformative, economic, and portable. Benefiting from their multiple catalytic activities and renewable nanocharacteristics, nanozymes can shine in agricultural scenarios using enzyme engineering and nanoscience, acting as sustainable toolboxes to improve agricultural production and reduce the risk to agricultural systems. Herein, we comprehensively discuss the classifications of nanozymes applied in current agriculture, including peroxidase-like, oxidase-like, catalase-like, superoxide dismutase-like, and laccase-like nanozymes, as well as their biocatalytic mechanisms. Especially, different applications of nanozymes in agriculture are deeply reviewed, covering crop protection and nutrition, agroenvironmental remediation and monitoring, and agroproduct quality monitoring. Finally, the challenges faced by nanozymes in agricultural applications are proposed, and we expect that our review can further enhance agricultural sustainability through nanozymology.

Surface acidity modulates the peroxidase-like activity of nanoclay

A novel surface acidity modulation strategy allows us to obtain modified nanoclay with specific peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity. Fe³⁺ exchange could increase the surface acidity of modified montmorillonite (MMT), resulting in a significant enhancement of its POD-like activity. We proposed that the POD-like catalytic reaction followed the electron transfer pathway and ping-pong mechanism. Correspondingly the constructed colorimetric sensor for H₂O₂ exhibited high sensitivity and specificity.

Effects of iron mineral adhesion on bacterial conjugation: Interfering the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes through an interfacial process

Bacterial conjugation is one of the most prominent ways for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) transmission in the environment. Interfacial interactions between natural colloidal minerals and bacteria can alter the effective contact of bacteria, thereby affecting ARGs conjugation. Understanding the impact of iron minerals, a core component of colloidal minerals, on ARGs conjugation can help assess and intervene in the risk of ARGs transmission. With three selected iron minerals perturbation experiments, it was found that the conjugative transfer of plasmid that carried kanamycin resistance gene was 1.35 - 3.91-fold promoted by low concentrations of iron minerals (i.e., 5 - 100 mg L^-1), but inhibited at high concentrations (i.e., 1000 - 2000 mg L^-1) as 0.10 - 0.22-fold. Conjugation occurrence was highly relevant to the number of bacteria adhering per unit mass of mineral, thus switch in the adhesion modes of mineral-bacterial determined whether the conjugate transfer of ARGs was facilitated or inhibited. In addition, a unified model was formularized upon the physicochemical and physiological effects of adhesion on conjugation, and it can be used in estimating the critical inhibitory concentration of different iron minerals on conjugation. Our findings indicate natural colloidal minerals have great potential for applications in preventing the environmental propagation of ARGs through interfacial interactions.

Microbial community mediates hydroxyl radical production in soil slurries by iron redox transformation

The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated by minerals and/or microorganisms plays a vital but underappreciated role in affecting carbon and nutrient cycles at soil-water interfaces. It is currently unknown which interactions between microbial communities and iron (Fe) minerals produce hydroxyl radical (HO^•), which is the strongest oxidant among ROS. Using a series of well-controlled anoxic incubations of soil slurries, we demonstrated that interactions between microbial communities and Fe minerals synergistically drove HO^• production (up to ∼100 nM after 21-day incubation). Microorganisms drove HO^• generation in anoxic environments predominantly by modulating iron redox transformation that was more prominent than direct production of ROS by microorganisms. Among the microbial communities, Geobacter, Paucimonas, Rhodocyclaceae_K82, and Desulfotomaculum were the key genera strongly affecting HO^• production. In manured soils, the former two species had higher abundances and were crucial for HO^• production. In contrast, the latter two species were mainly abundant and important in soils with mineral fertilizers. Our study suggests that abundant highly reactive oxidant HO^• can be generated in anoxic environments and the microbial community-mediated redox transformations of iron (oxyhydr)oxides may be responsible for the HO^• production. These findings shed light on the microbial generation of HO^• in fluctuating redox environments and on consequences for global C and nutrient cycling.

Molecular Trade-Offs between Lattice Oxygen and Oxygen Vacancy Drive Organic Pollutant Degradation in Fungal Biomineralized Exoskeletons

Fungal-mineral interactions can effectively alleviate cellular stress from organic pollutants, the production of which are expected to rapidly increase owing to the Earth moving into an unprecedented geological epoch, the Anthropocene. The underlying mechanisms that may enable fungi to combat organic pollution during fungal-mineral interactions remain unclear. Inspired by the natural fungal sporulation process, we demonstrate for the first time that fungal biomineralization triggers the formation of an ultrathin (hundreds of nanometers thick) exoskeleton, enriched in nanosized iron (oxyhydr)oxides and biomolecules, on the hyphae. Mapped biochemical composition of this coating at a subcellular scale via high spatial resolution (down to 50 nm) synchrotron radiation-based techniques confirmed aromatic C, C-N bonds, amide carbonyl, and iron (oxyhydr)oxides as the major components of the coatings. This nanobiohybrid system appeared to impart a strong (×2) biofunctionality for fungal degradation of bisphenol A through altering molecular-level trade-offs between lattice oxygen and oxygen vacancy. Together, fungal coatings could act as "artificial spores", which enable fungi to combat physical and chemical stresses in natural environments, providing crucial insights into fungal biomineralization and coevolution of the Earth's lithosphere and biosphere.

Insights into the effect of iron-carbon particle amendment on food waste composting: Physicochemical properties and the microbial community

The effects of iron-carbon (Fe-C) particle amendment on organic matter degradation, product quality and functional microbial community in food waste composting were investigated. Fe-C particles (10%) were added to the material and composted for 32 days in a lab-scale composting system. The results suggested that Fe-C particle enhanced organic matter degradation by 12.3%, particularly lignocellulose, leading to a greater humification process (increased by 15.5%). In addition, NO₃^--N generation was enhanced (15.9%) by nitrification with more active ammonia monooxygenase and nitrite oxidoreductase activities in the cooling and maturity periods. Fe-C particles not only significantly increased the relative abundances of Bacillus and Aspergillus for organic matter decomposition, but also decreased the relative abundances of acid-producing bacteria. RDA analysis demonstrated that the bacterial community was significantly influenced by dissolved organic matter, C/N, NO₃^--N, humic acid, volatile fatty acids and pH, while electrical conductivity was the key factor affecting the fungal community.
