A review on artificial water channels incorporated polyamide membranes for water purification: Transport mechanisms and performance

While thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes are advanced for removing salts and trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) from water, TFC PA membranes encounter a water permeance-selectivity trade-off due to PA layer structural characteristics. Drawing inspiration from the excellent water permeance and solute rejection of natural biological channels, the development of analogous artificial water channels (AWCs) in TFC PA membranes (abbreviated as AWCM) promises to achieve superior mass transfer efficiency, enabling breaking the upper bound of water permeance and selectivity. Herein, we first discussed the types and structural characteristics of AWCs, followed by summarizing the methods for constructing AWCM. We discussed whether the AWCs acted as the primary mass transfer channels in AWCM and emphasized the important role of the AWCs in water transport and ion/TrOCs rejection. We thoroughly summarized the molecular-level mechanisms and structure-performance relationship of water molecules, ions, and TrOCs transport in the confined nanospace of AWCs, which laid the foundation for illustrating the enhanced water permeance and salt/TrOCs selectivity of AWCM. Finally, we discussed the challenges encountered in the field of AWCM and proposed future perspectives for practical applications. This review is expected to offer guidance for understanding the transport mechanisms of AWCM and developing next-generation membrane for effective water treatment.

Evaluation of aquaporin based biomimetic forward osmosis membrane in terms of rejection performance for contaminants in greywater and its membrane fouling properties

Forward osmosis (FO) technology is regarded as an alternative to wastewater treatment due to its high permeate flux, excellent solute selectivity and low fouling tendency. In this study, two novel aquaporin based biomimetic membranes (ABMs) were used for comparison in short-term experiments to investigate the impact of membrane surface properties on greywater treatment. The impact of feed solution (FS) temperature on the filtration performance and membrane fouling behavior of ABM was further analyzed in the sequential batch experiments. Results indicated that the membranes with rough surface morphology and low zeta potential (absolute value) facilitated the adsorption of linear alklybezene sulfonates (LAS), thus improving the water flux and the rejection of Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺. The increase in FS temperature enhanced the diffusion of organic matter and the water flux. In addition, sequential batch experiments showed that the membrane fouling layer was mainly in the form of organic and inorganic composite fouling, which was mitigated at FS temperature of 40 °C. Microbial community analysis revealed that the increase in FS temperature affected the diversity of microbial communities. More heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria were enriched in the fouling layer at FS 40 °C than at FS 20 °C. This study provides a novel strategy for employing ABM FO in greywater treatment and reuse.

High-Flux Nanofibrous Composite Reverse Osmosis Membrane Containing Interfacial Water Channels for Desalination

A nanofibrous composite reverse osmosis (RO) membrane with a polyamide barrier layer containing interfacial water channels was fabricated on an electrospun nanofibrous substrate via an interfacial polymerization process. The RO membrane was employed for desalination of brackish water and exhibited enhanced permeation flux as well as rejection ratio. Nanocellulose was prepared by sequential oxidations of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) and sodium periodate systems and surface grafting with different alkyl groups including octyl, decanyl, dodecanyl, tetradecanyl, cetyl, and octadecanyl groups. The chemical structure of the modified nanocellulose was verified subsequently by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and solid NMR measurements. Two monomers, trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD), were employed to prepare a cross-linked polyamide matrix, i.e., the barrier layer of the RO membrane, which integrated with the alkyl groups-grafted nanocellulose to build up interfacial water channels via interfacial polymerization. The top and cross-sectional morphologies of the composite barrier layer were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to verify the integration structure of the nanofibrous composite containing water channels. The aggregation and distribution of water molecules in the nanofibrous composite RO membrane verified the existence of water channels, demonstrated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The desalination performance of the nanofibrous composite RO membrane was conducted and compared with that of commercially available RO membranes in the processing of brackish water, where 3 times higher permeation flux and 99.1% rejection ratio against NaCl were accomplished. This indicated that the engineering of interfacial water channels in the barrier layer could substantially increase the permeation flux of the nanofibrous composite membrane while retaining the high rejection ratio as well, i.e., to break through the trade-off between permeation flux and rejection ratio. Antifouling properties, chlorine resistance, and long-term desalination performance were also demonstrated to evaluate the potential applications of the nanofibrous composite RO membrane; remarkable durability and robustness were achieved in addition to 3 times higher permeation flux and a higher rejection ratio against commercial RO membranes in brackish water desalination.

Interlayered Interface of a Thin Film Composite Janus Membrane for Sieving Volatile Substances in Membrane Distillation

Hypersaline wastewater treatment using membrane distillation (MD) has gained significant attention due to its ability to completely reject nonvolatile substances. However, a critical limitation of current MD membranes is their inability to intercept volatile substances owing to their large membrane pores. Additionally, the strong interaction between volatile substances and MD membranes underwater tends to cause membrane wetting. To overcome these challenges, we developed a dual-layer thin film composite (TFC) Janus membrane through electrospinning and sequential interfacial polymerization of a polyamide (PA) layer and cross-linking a polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylic acid (PP) layer. The resulting Janus membrane exhibited high flux (>27 L m^-2 h^-1), salt rejection of ∼100%, phenol rejection of ∼90%, and excellent resistance to wetting and fouling. The interlayered interface between the PA and PP layer allowed the sieve of volatile substances by limiting their dissolution-diffusion, with the increasing hydrogen bond network formation preventing their transport. In contrast, small water molecules with powerful dynamics were permeable through the TFC membrane. Both experimental and molecular dynamics simulation results elucidated the sieving mechanism. Our findings demonstrate that this type of TFC Janus membrane can serve as a novel strategy to design next-generation MD membranes against volatile and non-volatile contaminants, which can have significant implications in the treatment of complex hypersaline wastewater.

The recent advance of precisely designed membranes for sieving

Developing new membranes with both high selectivity and permeability is critical in membrane science since conventional membranes are often limited by the trade-off between selectivity and permeability. In recent years, the emergence of advanced materials with accurate structures at atomic or molecular scale, such as metal organic framework, covalent organic framework, graphene, has accelerated the development of membranes, which benefits the precision of membrane structures. In this review, current state-of-the-art membranes are first reviewed and classified into three different types according to the structures of their building blocks, including laminar structured membranes, framework structured membranes and channel structured membranes, followed by the performance and applications for representative separations (liquid separation and gas separation) of these precisely designed membranes. Last, the challenges and opportunities of these advanced membranes are also discussed.

The coming of age of water channels for separation membranes: from biological to biomimetic to synthetic

Water channels are one of the key pillars driving the development of next-generation desalination and water treatment membranes. Over the past two decades, the rise of nanotechnology has brought together an abundance of multifunctional nanochannels that are poised to reinvent separation membranes with performances exceeding those of state-of-the-art polymeric membranes within the water-energy nexus. Today, these water nanochannels can be broadly categorized into biological, biomimetic and synthetic, owing to their different natures, physicochemical properties and methods for membrane nanoarchitectonics. Furthermore, against the backdrop of different separation mechanisms, different types of nanochannel exhibit unique merits and limitations, which determine their usability and suitability for different membrane designs. Herein, this review outlines the progress of a comprehensive amount of nanochannels, which include aquaporins, pillar[5]arenes, I-quartets, different types of nanotubes and their porins, graphene-based materials, metal- and covalent-organic frameworks, porous organic cages, MoS₂, and MXenes, offering a comparative glimpse into where their potential lies. First, we map out the background by looking into the evolution of nanochannels over the years, before discussing their latest developments by focusing on the key physicochemical and intrinsic transport properties of these channels from the chemistry standpoint. Next, we put into perspective the fabrication methods that can nanoarchitecture water channels into high-performance nanochannel-enabled membranes, focusing especially on the distinct differences of each type of nanochannel and how they can be leveraged to unlock the as-promised high water transport potential in current mainstream membrane designs. Lastly, we critically evaluate recent findings to provide a holistic qualitative assessment of the nanochannels with respect to the attributes that are most strongly valued in membrane engineering, before discussing upcoming challenges to share our perspectives with researchers for pathing future directions in this coming of age of water channels.
