Insights into Chlorobenzene Catalytic Oxidation over Noble Metal Loading {001}-TiO2: The Role of NaBH4 and Subnanometer Ru Undergoing Stable Ru0Ru4+ Circulation

Unveiling the Function of Oxygen Vacancy on Facet-Dependent CeO2 for the Catalytic Destruction of Monochloromethane: Guidance for Industrial Catalyst Design

Secondary pollution remains a critical challenge for the catalytic destruction of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). By employing experimental studies and theoretical calculations, we provide valuable insights into the catalytic behaviors exhibited by ceria rods, cubes, and octahedra for monochloromethane (MCM) destruction, shedding light on the elementary reactions over facet-dependent CeO2. Our findings demonstrate that CeO2 nanorods with the (110) facet exhibit the best performance in MCM destruction, and the role of vacancies is mainly to form a longer distance (4.63 Å) of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) compared to the stoichiometric surface, thereby enhancing the activation of MCM molecules. Subsequent molecular orbital analysis showed that the adsorption of MCM mainly transferred electrons from the 3σ and 4π* orbitals to the Ce 4f orbitals, and the activation was mainly caused by weakening of the 3σ bonding orbitals. Furthermore, isotopic experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the hydrogen chloride generated is mainly derived from methyl in MCM rather than from water, and the primary function of water is to form excess saturated H on the surface, facilitating the desorption of generated hydrogen chloride.

Defects materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti) materials enhanced photocatalytic activity for toluene and chlorobenzene mixtures degradation: Mechanism study

In this paper, the effect of three monocarboxylic acids on MIL-125 synthesis was systematically investigated and the results were discussed in detail. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption curves indicated that small molecule acids (acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid) affected the morphology of MIL-125 and induced lamellar pores and structural defects in the crystals. Thermogravimetric measurements confirmed the presence of acid-regulated defective metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Electrochemical tests and density function theory calculations indicated that acid modulation could change the forbidden bandwidth of the material. The acid modification strategy effectively promoted the transfer of photogenerated electrons and enhanced the adsorption and activation of O2 and H2O molecules, generating reactive radicals. The modified MOFs also showed excellent performance in the removal of mixed toluene and chlorobenzene. The degradation pathways of the mixture were analyzed by in situ infrared (IR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The mixture was converted to chlorophenolic intermediates in the presence of reactive oxygen species, further decomposed to form ethers and ethanol, and finally formed small molecules such as carbon dioxide and water. A feasible method was provided for the preparation of photocatalysts for the treatment of mixed VOCs.

Electron Donation from Boron Suboxides via Strong p-d Orbital Hybridization Boosts Molecular O2 Activation on Ru/TiO2 for Low-Temperature Dibromomethane Oxidation

Low-temperature catalytic oxidation is of significance to the degradation of halogenated volatile organic compounds (HVOCs) to avoid hazardous byproducts with low energy consumption. Efficient molecular oxygen (O2) activation is pivotal to it but usually limited by the insufficient electron cloud density at the metal center. Herein, Ru-B catalysts with enhanced electron density around Ru were designed to achieve efficient O2 activation, realizing dibromomethane (DBM) degradation T90 at 182 °C on RuB1/TiO2 (about 30 °C lower than pristine Ru/TiO2) with a TOFRu value of 0.055 s-1 (over 8 times that of Ru/TiO2). Compared to the limited electron transfer (0.02 e) on pristine Ru/TiO2, the Ru center gained sufficient negative charges (0.31 e) from BOx via strong p-d orbital hybridization. The Ru-B site then acted as the electron donor complexing with the 2π* antibonding orbital of O2 to realize the O2 dissociative activation. The reactive oxygen species formed thereby could initiate a fast conversion and oxidation of formate intermediates, thus eventually boosting the low-temperature catalytic activity. Furthermore, we found that the Ru-B sites for O2 activation have adaptation for pollutant removal and multiple metal availability. Our study shed light on robust O2 activation catalyst design based on electron density adjustment by boron.

Progress of catalytic oxidation of typical chlorined volatile organic compounds (CVOCs): A review

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) are still a part of the current atmospheric environmental problems that cannot be ignored, but unlike conventional VOCs, the presence of Cl causes various catalyst deactivations in the catalytic process. In this paper, we focus on six common CVOCs and discuss various behavioral mechanisms of the whole catalytic process from six aspects: catalyst selection, factors affecting the catalytic effect, changes in catalytic behavior in the presence of different gases, catalyst poisoning deactivation behavior, degradation products and degradation mechanisms to provide guidance for further development of low-temperature and efficient CVOCs catalysts.

Insights into the Selective Transformation of Ceria Sulfation and Iron/Manganese Mineralization for Enhancing the Selective Recovery of Rare Earth Elements

To cope with the urgent and unprecedented demands for rare earth elements (REEs) in sophisticated industries, increased attention has been paid to REE recovery from recycled streams. However, the similar geochemical behaviors of REEs and transition metals often result in poor separation performance due to nonselectivity. Here, a unique approach based on the selective transformation between ceria sulfation and iron/manganese mineralization was proposed, leading to the enhancement of the selective separation of REEs. The mechanism of the selective transformation of minerals could be ascribed to the distinct geochemical and metallurgical properties of ions, resulting in different combinations of cations and anions. According to hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) theory, the strong Lewis acid of Ce(III) was inclined to combine with the hard base of sulfates (SO₄^2-), while the borderline acid of Fe(II)/Mn(II) prefers to interact with oxygen ions (O^2-). Both in situ characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation further revealed that such selective transformation might trigger by the generation of an oxygen vacancy on the surface of CeO₂, leading to the formation of Ce₂(SO₄)₃ and Fe/Mn spinel. Although the electron density difference of the configurations (CeO_2-x-SO₄, Fe₂O_3-x-SO₄, and MnO_2-x-SO₄) shared a similar direction of the electron transfer from the metals to the sulfate-based oxygen, the higher electron depletion of Ce (Q_Ce = -1.91 e) than Fe (Q_Fe = -1.66 e) and Mn (Q_Mn = -1.64 e) indicated the higher stability in the Ce-O-S complex, resulting in the larger adsorption energy of CeO_2-x-SO₄ (-6.88 eV) compared with Fe₂O_3-x-SO₄ (-3.10 eV) and MnO_2-x-SO₄ (-2.49 eV). This research provided new insights into the selective transformation of REEs and transition metals in pyrometallurgy and thus offered a new approach for the selective recovery of REEs from secondary resources.
