Abstract
Thermoresponsive polymers (TRPs) have been explored over decades for biomedical applications, and poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) TRP is extensively investigated due to its low toxicity and lower critical solution temperature (LCST), close to physiological temperatures. Besides this, the utilization of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which belong to a class of porous polymers, in bio-based applications is of great interest due to their remarkable properties. Thus, the integration of PVCL and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as conjugate materials can lead to advanced bio-based applications; however, the need is to understand the influence of the COF on the PVCL conformation. Herein, a triazine-based COF, CC-TAPT-COF, has been synthesized and completely characterized. Later, the effect of CC-TAPT-COF on the PVCL polymer conformation was studied using various techniques. In fluorescence spectroscopy, a fluorescence quenching for PVCL in the presence of CC-TAPT-COF was observed, which indicated conformational changes. Later, results from thermal fluorescence studies and dynamic light scattering as a function of temperature showed a slight decrease in LCST value for PVCL after the addition of CC-TAPT-COF concentrations. These results showed a slight effect of CC-TAPT-COF on the PVCL conformation. Likewise, a slight decrease in the transmittance value for specific bands in infrared spectra showed a slight effect of CC-TAPT-COF on the PVCL conformation. Further, results from electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed a conjugate formation between PVCL and CC-TAPT-COF due to the presence of binding interactions between them. Overall, the results from several studies showed a slight effect of CC-TAPT-COF on the PVCL during conjugate formation between PVCL and CC-TAPT-COF. This study will be beneficial for the development of COF-thermoresponsive polymer conjugates with a mixture of their unique features as advanced biomaterials.

Abstract
Today, the monitoring and determination of heavy metal pollutants in the environment is an essential requirement for the environmental and research communities. Mercury ion is one of the most hazardous heavy metals, and scientists are trying to develop new methods for its detection. In this study, a new colorimetric sensor based on aggregation gallic acid-capped gold nanoparticles (GA-AuNPs) for the determination of mercury ions in environmental water samples was presented. The green synthesized GA-AuNPs exhibited a sharp surface plasmon resonance peak at 515 nm. The addition of mercury ions changed the surface properties of GA-AuNPs, resulting in the formation of a new peak near 670 nm due to the aggregation of GA-AuNPs, and an obvious color change from red to purple occurred. Thus, mercury ions were detected based on the change in the absorbance ratio (A670/A515). The developed sensor can determine the mercury ions in the concentration range of 78.0 nM to 8.3 µM with a detection limit of 5.5 nM. Based on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) reports, the amount of Hg2+ ions in fresh water should be between 10.0 and 30.0 nM. The results indicate that the developed sensor can detect and determine trace amounts of Hg2+ ions in environmental water samples.

Abstract
Development of novel sulf-functionalized porous organic polymers (POPs) for Mercury (II) (Hg2+) removal is of great significant, but the adsorbents always suffered by the low adsorption capacity, stability, and efficiency for the reason that the common construction of functionalized POPs from the functionalized monomers or post-functionalization of the POPs always sacrifice the porosity. In this paper, porphyrin-based POPs with different heteroatoms were constructed through the aldehyde monomer (benzene, 2,5-thiophenedicarboxaldehyde and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxaldehyde) and pyrrole according to the Adler-Longo method. In this way, nitrogen (N) in pyrrole and sulfur (S) in thiophene structures were embed into the backbone structure of the polymers. The functional structures not only act as the linking building block into the stable cross-linking structure, but also offer abundant uncovered functional sites for Hg2+ adsorption, resulting the porphyrin-based POPs high Hg2+ capacity (1049 mg/g), removal efficiency (more than 99.9%), good reusability and selectivity for its highest heteroatoms contents. The adsorption mechanism confirmed the cooperative coordination of N in porphyrin and S in thiophene with Hg2+. This work confirmed the functional groups play more important role in heavy metal adsorption, and the embedded functional sites into backbone also promotes the stability and the adsorption performance.

Abstract
Guided by the concept of treating the wastes with wastes, the efficient use of bone residuals as separation materials is worthy of study. Since bone chars (BCs) are composed of hydroxyapatite and carbon matrix, it is desired to extend the carbon component with improved pore structure and abundant modified groups further, which is favorable to capture metal ions. In this work, phosphorus-modified BCs (PBCs) were fabricated by pretreating bone residuals with phytic acid, achieving improved surface areas (208.7-517.6 m2/g, 37.9-8.2-fold of enhancement) and abundant surface phosphorus contents (5.63-7.54 at.%, 2.8-5.8-fold of enhancement) than BCs. PBCs could adsorb heavy metals with fast kinetics (10.0 h) and excellent maximum capacities (463.9, 156.5, and 80.9 mg/g for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II)). Spectroscopic results demonstrated that the formation of precipitation was crucial for the enrichment of Pb(II). Moreover, the coordination with functional groups (O-/reductive N-species), the cation exchange with inorganic Ca2+, the electrostatic attraction with deprotonated O-, and the cation-π coordination should also be considered for the sorption. Our study facilitated the application of activated bone wastes as a promising candidate to remediate aquatic heavy metals.

Abstract
Separation materials have received increasing attention given their broad applications in the management of environmental pollution. It is desired to balance the contradiction between high separation efficiency and selectivity of separation materials. The integration of ball-milled bone chars with electrospun membranes might achieve this balance. In this study, electrospun cellulose/chitosan/ball-milled bone char (CL/CS/MB) membranes were by well-dispersing ball-milled bone chars with nanoscale size (98.9-167.5 nm) and developed porosity (40.2-373.1 m2/g) in the electrospinning solvent. The synergistic integration of distributed MBs (5.4-31.5 wt.% of loading hydroxyapatite on the membrane matrix) allowed the efficient sorption of Pb(II) with fast kinetics (20.0 min), excellent capacity (219.9 mg/g at pH 5.0, T 298 K), and favorable selectivity coefficients (2.76-6.79). The formation of minerals was dominant for the selective sorption of Pb(II) by combining the spectral analysis and quantitative determination. The surface complexation with O-/reductive N-species, the cation exchange with inorganic Ca2+, the electrostatic attraction with deprotonated O-, and the cation-π coordination with the aromatic carbon via the π-electrons should be not ignored for the capture of Pb(II). This work demonstrated the feasibility of electrospun CL/CS/MB membranes as a promising candidate for the remediation of aquatic pollutants.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have become a promising candidate for the remediation of heavy metal pollution. However, researches on COF adsorbents still have challenges on maintaining good optical properties and adsorption performance under harsh conditions. Herein, a fully π-conjugated COF with dual binding sites (Bpy-sp2c-COF) is reported for rapid fluorescence recognition and enhanced adsorption towards divalent heavy metal ions. The vinylene-linkage lattice shows strong luminescence and excellent stability in both strong acidity and basicity. Bpy-sp2c-COF demonstrates not only nanomolar-scale detection of divalent heavy metal ions, but also good adsorption capacity (Hg2+ 718.48, Ni2+ 278.64, Cu2+ 260.11, and Co2+ 126.23 mg/g). Experimental and theoretical studies reveal the intramolecular charge transfer as the fluorescence quenching mechanism. Further simulation results demonstrate the cyano and bipyridine groups on the lattice can act as dual binding sites for divalent heavy metal ions. Experimental results confirmed the adsorption capacity of Bpy-sp2c-COF superior to that of COFs with either cyano groups (Hg2+ 415.34, Ni2+ 165.60, Cu2+ 160.55, and Co2+ 73.14 mg/g), or bipyridine groups (Hg2+ 369.25, Ni2+ 133.41, Cu2+ 133.32, and Co2+ 69.23 mg/g). Besides, robust regeneration of the adsorbent could be achieved over 10 cycles. The fully π-conjugated COF with dual binding sites provides a new approach for designing next-generation sensors and adsorbents with excellent performances.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous and crystalline organic polymers, which have found usage in various fields. These frameworks are tailorable through the introduction of diverse functionalities into the platform. Indeed, functionality plays a key role in their different applications. However, sometimes functional groups are not compatible with reaction conditions or can compete and interfere with other groups of monomers in the direct synthetic method. Also, pre-synthesis of bulky moieties in COFs can negatively affect crystal formation. To avoid these problems a post-synthetic modification (PSM) approach is a helpful tactic. Also, with the assistance of this strategy porous size can be tunable and stability can be improved without considerable effect on the crystallite. In addition, conductivity, hydrophobicity/ hydrophilicity, and chirality are among the features that can be reformed with this method. In this review, different types of PSM strategies based on recent articles have been divided into four categories: (i) post-functionalization, (ii) post-metalation, (iii) chemical locking, and (iv) host-guest post-modifications. Post-functionalization and chemical locking methods are based on covalent bond formation while in post-metalation and host-guest post-modifications, non-covalent bonds are formed. Also, the potential of these post-modified COFs in energy storage and conversion (lithium-sulfur batteries, hydrogen storage, proton-exchange membrane fuel cells, and water splitting), heterogeneous catalysts, food safety evaluation, gas separation, environmental domains (greenhouse gas capture, radioactive element uptake, and water remediation), and biological applications (drug delivery, biosensors, biomarker capture, chiral column chromatography, and solid-state smart nanochannels) have been discussed.

Abstract
In recent years, a variety of adsorbents have been developed for Hg2+ removal. However, these adsorbents are unsatisfactory for adsorption due to narrow and irregular pore channels or poor adsorption capacity and low stability. Therefore, it is worth exploring a porous Hg2+ adsorbent material with high adsorption performance and stability. In this study, a benzothiadiazole-based nonbranching functionalized covalent organic framework (COF) material (TPS-COF) by one-step synthesis was reported, which exhibited a high specific surface area of 1564 m2 g-1, high crystallinity and stability attributed to its high conjugated linkage structure of benzothiadiazole. In addition, due to the rich S and N elements of the benzothiadiazole unit, it exhibited excellent adsorption performance on Hg2+, including excellent adsorption amount (1040 mg g-1), high initial adsorption rate (448 mg g-1 min-1) and very short adsorption equilibrium time (10 min), with an efficient removal rate of Hg2+ in the pH range of 2-8. After desorption, the TPS-COF still retained good pore stability, adsorption capacity, and reusability. Such a one-step synthetic unbranched functionalization strategy provides further insights to achieve a good balance between the high crystallinity, functionality and stability of COFs.

Abstract
Lignin, the most abundant source of renewable aromatic compounds derived from natural lignocellulosic biomass, has great potential for various applications as green materials due to its abundant active groups. However, it is still challenging to quickly construct green polymers with a certain crystallinity by utilizing lignin as a building block. Herein, new green lignin-based covalent organic polymers (LIGOPD-COPs) were one-pot fabricated with water as the reaction solvent and natural lignin as the raw material. Furthermore, by using paraformaldehyde as a protector and modulator, the LIGOPD-COPs prepared under optimized conditions displayed better crystallinity than reported lignin-based polymers, demonstrating the feasibility of preparing lignin-based polymers with improved crystallinity. The improved crystallinity confers LIGOPD-COPs with enhanced application performance, which was demonstrated by their excellent performances in sample treatment of non-targeted food safety analysis. Under optimized conditions, phytochromes, the main interfering matrices, were almost completely removed from different phytochromes-rich vegetables by LIGOPD-COPs, accompanied by "full recovery" of 90 chemical hazards. Green, low-cost, and reusable properties, together with improved crystallinity, will accelerate the industrialization and marketization of lignin-based COPs, and promote their applications in many fields.

Microporous Biocarbons Derived from Inonotus obliquus Mushroom and Their Application in the Removal of Liquid and Gaseous Impurities. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms232415788. Abstract
Biocarbons were obtained by physical and chemical activation of the residue of the extraction of chaga fungi (Inonotus obliquus). The residue was subjected to heat treatment carried out in a microwave oven and in a quartz tubular reactor. The materials were characterized by elemental analysis, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, determination of pH, and the contents of acidic and basic oxygen functional groups on the surface of biocarbons by the Boehm method. The final biocarbon adsorbents have surface areas varying from 521-1004 m2/g. The physical activation of the precursor led to a strongly basic character of the surface. Chemical activation of Inonotus obliquus promoted the generation of acid functional groups. All biocarbons were used for methyl red sodium salt adsorption from the liquid phase. The sorption capacities of biocarbons towards the organic dye studied varied from 77 to 158 mg/g. The Langmuir model was found to better describe the experimental results. The results of the kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption of methyl red sodium salt on the biocarbons followed the pseudo-second-order model. The acidic environment was conducive to the adsorption of the dye on the obtained biocarbons. Moreover, thermodynamic studies confirmed that the organic dye adsorption on the biocarbons was a spontaneous endothermic process. The biocarbons obtained were also tested as adsorbents of hydrogen sulfide in dry and wet conditions. The sorption capacities towards hydrogen sulfide varied in the range of 21.9-77.9 mg. The results have shown that the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide depends on the process conditions and the activation procedure of biocarbons (method of activation and thermochemical treatment of samples). It has been shown that the initial material used can be a new precursor for obtaining cheap and-more importantly-universal bioadsorbents characterized by high effectiveness in the removal of air and water pollutants.

Abstract
In this work, we reported a modified COF material for trinitrophenol (TPA) ratiometric sensing and removal. Here a cationic covalent organic framework (C-COF) was prepared as host, while two Tb(III)-based ions were doped into C-COF as probe by ionic exchange reaction with probe loading level of ∼15%. In the absence of TPA, weak Tb(III) emission (489 nm, 545 nm, 585 nm) and bright red COF emission were observed (633 nm). The addition of TPA increased Tb(III) emission and decreased COF emission, following linear response within TPA concentration region of 0-9 μM. Their limit of detection values were determined as 0.9 μM and 4.5 μM, respectively. Corresponding working equations were fitted as I/I0 = 1.225 + 6.914 × 105 M-1[TPA], R2 = 0.997 for TbCF3-COF and I/I0 = 1.063 + 9.222 × 104 M-1 [TPA], R2 = 0.993 for TbDBM-COF. TbCF3-COF showed better sensing performance than TbDBM-COF, due to its suitable ligand triplet energy level. Their sensing mechanism was revealed as dopant "replacement", where dopant molecules loaded in COF micropore were replaced by TPA molecules, accompanied with energy competing on Tb(III) 5D4 level, showing ratiometric signals. Good selectivity and removal capacity (∼7.4 wt%) for TPA were achieved.

Abstract
Efficient magnetic solid phase extraction using crystalline porous polymers can find important applications in food safety. Herein, the core-shell Fe3O4@COFs nanospheres were synthesized by one-pot method and characterized in detail. The porous COF shell with large surface area had fast and selective adsorption for propylparaben via π-π, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. The extraction and desorption parameters were evaluated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the extraction equilibrium was reached only in 5 min, the maximum adsorption capacity for propylparaben was 500 mg g-1 and the proposed Fe3O4@DhaTab-based-MSPE-HPLC-UV method afforded good linearity (4-20000 μg mL-1) with R2 (0.997), low limits of detection (0.55 μg L-1) and limits of quantification (1.5 μg L-1). Furthermore, the developed method was applied to determine propylparaben in soft drinks with the recoveries (97.0-98.3%) and relative standard deviations (0.61 to 3.75%). These results revealed the potential of Fe3O4@DhaTab as efficient adsorbents for parabens in food samples.

Abstract
Carbon xerogels were obtained by polycondensation of resorcinol and formaldehyde in a water medium. Their surface was oxidized by ammonium persulfate and then modified with amine groups. Four amines were used: methylamine, ethylamine, propylamine, and ethylenediamine, differing in carbon chain length and number of amine groups. The materials were characterized by low-temperature nitrogen sorption, elemental analysis, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and determination of the surface oxygen group content with the use of the Boehm method. The final carbon adsorbents had surface areas ranging from 172-663 m2/g and acid-base nature. They were applied for adsorption of thymol blue from water solution. The sorption capacities of the studied adsorbents ranged from 83 to 140 mg/g. The presence of amine groups on the xerogel surface was found to increase its sorption capacity towards the dye studied. The dye adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous, as indicated by the positive values of ΔH and the negative values of ΔG, respectively. The kinetics of adsorption of thymol blue was established to be described by the pseudo-second-order model. The equilibrium data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The character of thymol blue adsorption is much better described by the Langmuir isotherm.

Abstract
Pig hair (PH), a keratinous waste, was modified by ammonium thioglycolate in a ball milling to promote its performance of Hg(II) sequestration. The ball milling broke the hydrophobic cuticle sheath and enhanced the reduction of disulfide bond, which increased the sulfydryl content of the modified PH (BTPH) from 0.07 to 11.05 μmol/g. BTPH exhibited a significantly higher capture capacity of Hg(II) (415.4 mg/g) than PH (3.1 mg/g), as well as the commercial activated carbon (219.7 mg/g), and persisted its performance over a wide range of solution pH. Meanwhile, BTPH with a distribution coefficient of 5.703 × 105 mL/g could selectively capture Hg(II) from the water with the coexisting metal ions such as Mg(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II). Moreover, the low-cost BTPH could reduce the Hg(II) from 1.0 mg/L to well below the limit of drinkable water (2 μg/L) in real-world samples. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and state-of-the-art characterizations illustrated that the binding of Hg(II) to sulfydryl groups was the main adsorption mechanism. Notably, BTPH decreased the mercury content of water spinaches from 24.1 to 0.50 mg/kg and thereby significantly reduced the phytotoxicity of Hg(II). This work therefore provides a sustainable way to utilize keratinous wastes for the remediation of aqueous Hg(II).

Abstract
Due to the excellent ion-sensing potential of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), the new imine-linked conjugated COF (IC-COF) is synthesized through a water-based synthesis reaction between 1,5-diaminonaphthalene and 2,4,6-tris(4-formylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine to create a luminescence sensor. It is noteworthy that the green synthesized IC-COF shows excellent selectivity to phosphate ions (PO43-) with a detection limit of 0.61 μM. The recyclability performance of IC-COF is high, indicating that it can be reused without a significant reduction in performance (5.2% decline after 5 cycles). Theoretical calculations using the density functional theory are performed on the IC-COF-PO43- and IC-COF-Cu+ complexes to explore the sensing mechanism. The fluorescence quenching in the presence of PO43- ions is attributed to the difference between PO43- binding sites to the IC-COF compared to Cu+, which leads to the considerable change in the IC-COF absorption spectrum from 400 to 600 nm.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with 2D or 3D networks are a class of novel porous crystalline materials, and have attracted more and more attention in the field of gas purification owing to their attractive physicochemical properties, such as high surface area, adjustable functionality and structure, low density, and high stability. However, few systematic reviews about the application statuses of COFs in gas purification are available, especially about non-CO2 harmful gases. In this review, the recent progress of COFs about the capture, catalysis, and detection of common harmful gases (such as CO2, NOx, SO2, H2S, NH3 and volatile pollutants) were comprehensively discussed. The design strategies of COF functional materials from porosity adjustment to surface functionalization (including bottom-up approach, post-synthetic approach, and blending with other materials) for certain application were summarized in detail. Furthermore, the faced challenges and future research directions of COFs in the harmful gas treatment were clearly proposed to inspire the development of COFs.

Abstract
The development of functional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with specific properties is an emerging research field. In the current work, COF-SQ-Ph was synthesized through the aza-Diels-Alder reaction between phenylacetylene and the matrix COF-SQ (triazine-based COF) generated from the organic monomers 2, 4, 6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1, 3, 5-triazine and 2, 5-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde in flask. The functionalized COF-SQ-Ph with an extended π-conjugated structure and enhanced structural stability was used as the sulfur loading recipient to prepare sulfur cathodes for lithium-sulfur batteries. Sulfur-impregnated COF-SQ-Ph marked as COF-SQ-Ph-S displayed better cycling stability with a specific capacity of 618 mA h g-1 after 150 cycles due to the lithiophilic interaction between lithium polysulfides and nitrogen atoms from quinoline and triazine moieties in COF-SQ-Ph-S. The functionalization of triazine-based COFs through a cycloaddition reaction in flask could promote the large-scale preparation of tailored COFs and the post-synthesis modification of COF-SQ.

Abstract
Mercury pollution is a significant threat to the environment and health worldwide. Therefore, effective and low-cost absorbents that are easily scalable are needed for real-world applications. Enlarging the surface area of the materials and doping with heteroatoms are two of the most common strategies to cope with this problem. Sulfur-doped activated carbon synthesized from the carbonization of inverse vulcanized thiopolymers makes it possible to combine both large specific surface area and doping of heteroatoms, resulting in outperformance in mercury uptake against commercial activated carbons. Convenient recovery of mercury absorbents after treatment should be beneficial in mercury collecting and recycling. Therefore, magnetic sulfur-doped carbons (MSCs) were prepared by functionalizing sulfur doped carbons through chemical precipitation with magnetic iron oxides. Besides the characterisations of materials, mercury uptake experiments, such as stactic test, capacity test, impact of solution pH, and mixed ions interferences were performed. These MSCs exhibit high specific surface area (1,329 m2/g), high sulfur content (up to 14.8 wt%), porous structure, low cost, and are convenient for retrieval. MSCs are demonstrated high uptake capacity (187 mg g-1) and efficiency in mercury solution and multifunctional absorption in mixed ions solution, showing their potential to be applied in water purification and environmental remediation.

Abstract
A solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was established for fipronil and its metabolite residues (fipronil desulfinyl, fipronil sulphone and fipronil sulphide) in eggs with a covalent triazine framework (CTF) porous material as the adsorbent followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) detection. Multiple probes and quantum chemistry theory calculations were conducted to describe the versatile adsorption property directly and quantifiably. The conjugated structure of CTF and N-containing triazine generated π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds between the CTF and the targets, which led to high extraction efficiency and recoveries. The solid-phase extraction parameters, including amount of the adsorbent, type of eluent, amount of eluent and loading rate were investigated. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the recoveries of the analytes were between 85.5% and 103.2%, and the RSD (n = 5) was between 1.8% and 3.6%. The LODs and LOQs were 0.13-0.2 ng g-1 and 0.5-0.8 ng g-1, respectively. The sorbent can effectively reduce the interference of the matrix and meet the detection requirements of fipronil and its metabolites in eggs. These results imply that the CTF as adsorbents have great potential in the analysis of trace targets in samples with complex matrices.

Abstract
Global population growth and water resource scarcity are significant social problems currently being studied by many researchers focusing on finding new materials for water treatment. The aim is to obtain quality water suitable for drinking and industrial consumption. In this sense, an emergent class of crystalline porous materials known as Covalent-Organic Frameworks (COFs) offers a wide range of possibilities since their structures can be designed on demand for specific applications. Indeed, in the last decade, many efforts have been made for their use in water treatment. This perspective article aims to overview the state-of-the-art COFs collecting the most recent results in the field for water detection of pollutants and water treatment. After the introduction, where we overview the classical design strategies on COF design and synthesis for obtaining chemically stable COFs, we summarize the different experimental methodologies used for COFs processing in the form of supported and free-standing membranes and colloids. Finally, we describe the use of COFs in processes involving the detection of pollutants in water and wastewater treatment, such as the capture of organic compounds, heavy metals, and dyes, the degradation of organic pollutants, as well as in desalination processes. Finally, we provide a perspective on the field and the potential technological use of these novel materials.

Abstract
An efficient, environment-friendly and economical catalyst to control contaminants of environment is an enduring interest in recent years. In this study, a new composite, DyxMnFe2-xO4nanoparticles decorated over mesoporous silica was synthesized and utilized for removal of organic pollutant. Highly crystalline nature of DyxMnFe2-xO4 nanoparticles and amorphous nature of material was confirmed by XRD (X-ray diffraction) technique. Infrared spectra of fabricated material before and after adsorption of dye molecules evidenced the successful adsorption of dye molecules by fabricated adsorbent. From field emission scanning electron microscopic (FESEM) images of Dy3+ substituted MnFe2O4 composite with mesoporous silica, it was clearly observed that ferrite particles of size 20-30 nm were decorated on the surface of mesoporous silica particles and distributed well over spherical silica balls homogeneously. Its magnificent mesoporous nature was revealed from BET (nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements) analysis. Surface area, pore volume and average pore size was found 387.95 m2/g, 0.390 cm3/g and 4.02 nm respectively. Tri-modal pore size distribution showed its effective utilization in adsorption. The abundant (SiOH) hydroxyl groups of mesoporous silica, the broad diffraction hump of silica depicted its superior loading capacity of target molecular specie inside its porous network. From band gap analysis, a red shift of 2.43 eV exhibited semiconductor photocatalysis of DyxMnFe2-xO4 nanoparticles. Degradation efficiency of bare MnFe2O4, DyxMnFe2-xO4 and mesoporous silica-based composite was tested using crystal violet dye. Its explored adsorption-photocatalysis synergy, degradation mechanism, kinetic investigation, easily recovery and remarkable recycling ability suggested that the new fabricated composite is best for environmental remediation.

Abstract
Heavy metal ions are highly toxic and widely spread as environmental pollutants. This work reports the development of two novel chelating adsorbents, based on the chemical modifications of graphene oxide and zirconium phosphate by functionalization with melamine-based chelating ligands for the effective and selective extraction of Hg(ii) and Pb(ii) from contaminated water sources. The first adsorbent melamine, thiourea-partially reduced graphene oxide (MT-PRGO) combines the heavier donor atom sulfur with the amine and triazine nitrogen's functional groups attached to the partially reduced GO nanosheets to effectively capture Hg(ii) ions from water. The MT-PRGO adsorbent shows high efficiency for the extraction of Hg(ii) with a capacity of 651 mg g-1 and very fast kinetics resulting in a 100% removal of Hg(ii) from 500 ppb and 50 ppm concentrations in 15 second and 30 min, respectively. The second adsorbent, melamine zirconium phosphate (M-ZrP), is designed to combine the amine and triazine nitrogen's functional groups of melamine with the hydroxyl active sites of zirconium phosphate to effectively capture Pb(ii) ions from water. The M-ZrP adsorbent shows exceptionally high adsorption affinity for Pb(ii) with a capacity of 681 mg g-1 and 1000 mg g-1 using an adsorbent dose of 1 g L-1 and 2 g L-1, respectively. The high adsorption capacity is also coupled with fast kinetics where the equilibrium time required for the 100% removal of Pb(ii) from 1 ppm, 100 ppm and 1000 ppm concentrations is 40 seconds, 5 min and 30 min, respectively using an adsorbent dose of 1 g L-1. In a mixture of six heavy metal ions at a concentration of 10 ppm, the removal efficiency is 100% for Pb(ii), 99% for Hg(ii), Cd(ii) and Zn(ii), 94% for Cu(ii), and 90% for Ni(ii) while at a higher concentration of 250 ppm the removal efficiency for Pb(ii) is 95% compared to 23% for Hg(ii) and less than 10% for the other ions. Because of the fast adsorption kinetics, high removal capacity, excellent regeneration, stability and reusability, the MT-PRGO and M-ZrP are proposed as top performing remediation adsorbents for the solid phase extraction of Hg(ii) and Pb(ii), respectively from contaminated water.
