Synergistic Combination of the Capillary Effect of Collagen Fibers and Size-Sieving Merits of Metal–Organic Frameworks for Emulsion Separation with High Flux

Collagen presents a well-organized hierarchical multilevel structure. Microfibers, fibers, and fiber bundles are the aggregates of natural collagen; which achieve an ideal balance of mechanical strength and toughness at the mesoscopic scale for biological tissue. These mesostructured aggregates of collagen isolated from biological tissues retain these inherent organizational features to enable their use as building blocks for constructing new collagen materials with ideal mechanical performance, thermal and dimensional stability. This strategy is distinct from the more common bottom-up or molecular-level design and assembly approach to generating collagen materials. The present review introduces the hierarchical structure of biological collagen with a focus on mesostructural features. Isolation strategies for these collagen aggregates (CAs) are summarized. Recent progress in the use of these mesostructural components for the construction of new collagen materials with emerging applications is reviewed, including in catalysis, environmental applications, biomedicine, food packaging, electrical energy storage, and flexible sensors. Finally, challenges and prospects are assessed for controllable production of CAs as well as material designs.

Recent Advances in Biomass-Based Materials for Oil Spill Cleanup

Oil spill on sea surfaces, which mainly produced by the oil leakage accident happened on tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs and wells, has bring irreversible damage to marine environments and ecosystems. Among various spill oil handling methods, using sorbents to absorb and recover spill oils is a perspective method because they are cost-effective and enable a high recovery and without secondary pollution to the ecosystem. Currently, sorbents based on biomass materials have aroused extensively attention thanks to their features of inexpensive, abundant, biodegradable, and sustainable. Herein, we comprehensively review the state-of-the-art development of biomass-based sorbents for spill oil cleanup in the recent five years. After briefly introducing the background, the basic theory and material characteristics for the separation of oil from water and the adsorption of oils is also presented. Various modification methods for biomass materials are summarized in section three. Section four discusses the recent progress of biomass as oil sorbents for oil spill cleanup, in which the emphasis is placed on the oil sorption capacity and the separation efficiency. Finally, the challenge and future development directions is outlined.

Collagen Fiber-Based Advanced Separation Materials: Recent Developments and Future Perspectives

Separation plays a critical role in a broad range of industrial applications. Developing advanced separation materials is of great significance for the future development of separation technology. Collagen fibers (CFs), the typical structural proteins, exhibit unique structural hierarchy, amphiphilic wettability, and versatile chemical reactivity. These distinctive properties provide infinite possibilities for the rational design of advanced separation materials. During the past 2 decades, many progressive achievements in the development of CFs-derived advanced separation materials have been witnessed already. Herein, the CFs-based separation materials are focused on and the recent progresses in this topic are reviewed. CFs widely existing in animal skins display unique hierarchically fibrous structure, amphiphilicity-enabled surface wetting behaviors, multi-functionality guaranteed covalent/non-covalent reaction versatility. These outstanding merits of CFs bring great opportunities for realizing rational design of a variety of advanced separation materials that were capable of achieving high-performance separations to diverse specific targets, including oily pollutants, natural products, metal ions, anionic contaminants and proteins, etc. Besides, the important issues for the further development of CFs-based advanced separation materials are also discussed.

Type II porous ionic liquid based on metal-organic cages that enables L-tryptophan identification

Porous liquids with chemical separation properties are quite well-studied in general, but there is only a handful of reports in the context of identification and separation of non-gaseous molecules. Herein, we report a Type II porous ionic liquid composed of coordination cages that exhibits exceptional selectivity towards L-tryptophan (L-Trp) over other aromatic amino acids. A previously known class of anionic organic-inorganic hybrid doughnut-like cage (HD) is dissolved in trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride (THTP_Cl). The resulting liquid, HD/THTP_Cl, is thereby composed of common components, facile to prepare, and exhibit room temperature fluidity. The permanent porosity is manifested by the high-pressure isotherm for CH4 and modeling studies. With evidence from time-dependent amino acid uptake, competitive extraction studies and molecular dynamic simulations, HD/THTP_Cl exhibit better selectivity towards L-Trp than other solid state sorbents, and we attribute it to not only the intrinsic porosity of HD but also the host-guest interactions between HD and L-Trp. Specifically, each HD unit is filled with nearly 5 L-Trp molecules, which is higher than the L-Trp occupation in the structure unit of other benchmark metal-organic frameworks.

Effectively remove p-arsanilic acid from water over amphiphilic amino modified collagen fiber

Efficient and rapid removal of p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) in water is very important in environmental protection and human health, however it is still a severe challenge in actual engineering. Herein, a novel sorbent (CF-PEI) was successfully fabricated by simply modifying the amphiphilic skin collagen fiber (CF) substrate with Polyethylenimine (PEI). The as-prepared CF-PEI exhibits high-efficiency adsorption for negatively charged p-ASA with aromatic rings due to the introduction of amino groups and the existence of hydrophobic bands, and the maximum adsorption capacity of CF-PEI for p-ASA was high up to 285.71 mg g^-1. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of CF-PEI on p-ASA mainly includes electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond and amphiphilicity. The multi-level all-fiber structure of CF makes it mainly focus on surface mass transfer with short mass transfer distance, and its capillary drainage effect can realize large flow and rapid separation. CF-PEI based on CF can realize the ability to separate low-concentration p-ASA with high flow rate and high efficiency. The effective processing volume was 12.5 L g^-1 when the separation flux reached as high as 9931.27 L m^-2 h^-1. Notably, the p-ASA adsorbed on CF-PEI was almost completely eluted by NaOH (0.5 mol L^-1). The adsorbent is convenient to prepare, recyclable, high in efficiency, and has a great application prospect in removing organic micro-pollutants.

Collagen fiber membrane-derived chemically and mechanically durable superhydrophobic membrane for high-performance emulsion separation

Abstract

Developing high-performance separation membrane with good durability is a highly desired while challenging issue. Herein, we reported the successful fabrication of chemically and mechanically durable superhydrophobic membrane that was prepared by embedding UiO-66 as size-sieving sites within the supramolecular fiber structure of collagen fiber membrane (CFM), followed by the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating. The as-prepared CFM/UiO-66(12)/PDMS membrane featured capillary effect-enhanced separation flux and homogeneous porous channels guaranteed high separation efficiency. When utilized as double-layer separation membranes, this new type of composite membranes separated various surfactant stabilized water-in-oil microemulsions and nanoemulsions, with the separation efficiency high up to 99.993 % and the flux as high as 973.3 L m− 2 h− 1. Compared with commercial polytetrafluoro ethylene (PTFE) membrane, the advantage of the double-layer CFM/UiO-66(12)/PDMS membranes in separation flux was evident, which exhibited one order of magnitude higher than that of commercial PTFE membrane. The CFM/UiO-66(12)/PDMS membrane was acid-alkali tolerant, UV-aging resistant and reusable for emulsion separation. Notably, the CFM/UiO-66(12)/PDMS membrane was mechanically durable against strong mechanical abrasion, which was still capable of separating diverse water-in-oil emulsions after the abrasion with sandpaper and assembled as double-layer separation membranes. We anticipate that the combination of CFM and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective strategy for fabricating high-performance separation membrane with high mechanical and chemical durability.
