A Novel Method for the Preparation of Narrow-Disperse Nanoencapsulated Phase Change Materials by Phase Inversion Emulsification and Suspension Polymerization

Preparation and Properties of Narrowly Dispersed Polyurethane Nanocapsules Containing Essential Oil via Phase Inversion Emulsification

Narrowly dispersed polyurethane (PU) nanocapsules containing lavender essential oil (LO) were fabricated by polyaddition of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) trimer with polyol using a phase inversion emulsification technique. The particle size distribution (PSD), surface morphology, structure, encapsulation parameters, release properties, and thermal stability of nanocapsules have been characterized using a laser particle size analyzer (LPSA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that the nanocapsules have a smaller size (ca. 268 nm), regular sphericity, uniform particle size (polydispersity index, PDI = 0.078), clear core-shell structure, and smooth surface. When the ratio of LO to TDI trimer is 5:10, the yield, encapsulation efficiency, and loading capacity of the nanocapsules can reach a maximum of 70.7%, 98.6%, and 64.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the release experiments showed that the cumulative release of LO from nanocapsules was only about 17% at room temperature and about 32% at 50 °C even after 20 days.

Poly(mono/diethylene glycol n-tetradecyl ether vinyl ether)s with Various Molecular Weights as Phase Change Materials

At present, research on the relationship of comb-like polymer phase change material structures and their heat storage performance is scarce. Therefore, this relationship from both micro and macro perspectives will be studied in this paper. In order to achieve a high phase change enthalpy, ethylene glycol segments were introduced between the vinyl and the alkyl side chains. A series of poly(mono/diethylene glycol n-tetradecyl ether vinyl ethers) (PC₁₄E_nVEs) (n = 1, 2) with various molecular weights were polymerized by living cationic polymerization. The results of PC₁₄E₁VE and PC₁₄E₂VE showed that the minimum number of carbon atoms required for side-chain crystallization were 7.7 and 7.2, which were lower than that reported in the literature. The phase change enthalpy 89 J/g (for poly(mono ethylene glycol n-tetradecyl ether vinyl ethers)) and 86 J/g (for poly(hexadecyl acrylate)) were approximately equal. With the increase of molecular weight, the melting temperature, the melting enthalpy, and the initial thermal decomposition temperature of PC₁₄E₁VE changed from 27.0 to 28.0 °C, from 95 to 89 J/g, and from 264 to 287 °C, respectively. When the number average molar mass of PC₁₄E_nVEs exceeded 20,000, the enthalpy values remained basically unchanged. The introduction of the ethylene glycol chain was conducive to the crystallization of alkyl side chains.

Sinomenine-loaded microcapsules fabricated by phase reversion emulsification-drying in liquid method: An evaluation of process parameters, characterization, and released properties

Sinomenine is a natural alkaloid with important biological activities (e.g. anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic). However, the unstability and short half-life absolutely limited its application to foods. Microencapsulation technology can offer a way to solve these issues. In this study, polylactic acid microcapsules loading sinomenine hydrochloride were fabricated by phase inversion emulsification-drying in liquid technique. The results showed that microcapsules had nice spherical shape, uniform particle size, and free flowing. The encapsulation efficiency was 89.2% and drug loading was 8.9% under the optimal conditions. In vitro release assays demonstrated that release of sinomenine from microcapsules was sustained and slow. Moreover, it was found that the sinomenine release fitted Fickian diffusion mechanism. The results of cytotoxicity study showed that sinomenine-loaded microcapsules were biocompatible. Sinomenine-loaded microcapsules could inhibit the growth of MDA-MB-231 cells using methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay. In summary, polylactide microcapsules exhibit excellent properties for sinomenine that can be used in drug or food industry.
