Highly Enhanced Photocatalytic Water-Splitting Activity of Gallium Zinc Oxynitride Derived from Flux-Assisted Zn/Ga Layered Double Hydroxides

Multifunctional Layered Double Hydroxides for Drug Delivery and Imaging

Two-dimensional nanomaterials, particularly layered double hydroxides (LDHs), have been widely applied in the biomedical field owing to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, controllable drug release/loading ability, and enhanced cellular permeability. Since the first study analyzing intercalative LDHs in 1999, numerous studies have investigated their biomedical applications, including drug delivery and imaging; recent research has focused on the design and development of multifunctional LDHs. This review summarizes the synthetic strategies and in-vivo and in-vitro therapeutic actions and targeting properties of single-function LDH-based nanohybrids and recently reported (from 2019 to 2023) multifunctional systems developed for drug delivery and/or bio-imaging.

Metal nitride-based nanostructures for electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production

The over-dependence on fossil fuels is one of the critical issues to be addressed for combating greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen, one of the promising alternatives to fossil fuels, is renewable, carbon-free, and non-polluting gas. The complete utilization of hydrogen in every sector ranging from small to large scale could hugely benefit in mitigating climate change. One of the key aspects of the hydrogen sector is its production via cost-effective and safe ways. Electrolysis and photocatalysis are well-known processes for hydrogen production and their efficiency relies on electrocatalysts, which are generally noble metals. The usage of noble metals as catalysts makes these processes costly and their scarcity is also a limiting factor. Metal nitrides and their porous counterparts have drawn considerable attention from researchers due to their good promise for hydrogen production. Their properties such as active metal centres, nitrogen functionalities, and porous features such as surface area, pore-volume, and tunable pore size could play an important role in electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production. This review focuses on the recent developments in metal nitrides from their synthesis methods point of view. Much attention is given to the emergence of new synthesis techniques, methods, and processes of synthesizing the metal nitride nanostructures. The applications of electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production are summarized. Overall, this review will provide useful information to researchers working in the field of metal nitrides and their application for hydrogen production.

A coating strategy to achieve effective local charge separation for photocatalytic coevolution

Semiconductors of narrow bandgaps and high quantum efficiency have not been broadly utilized for photocatalytic coevolution of H₂ and O₂ via water splitting. One prominent issue is to develop effective protection strategies, which not only mitigate photocorrosion in an aqueous environment but also facilitate charge separation. Achieving local charge separation is especially challenging when these reductive and oxidative sites are placed only nanometers apart compared to two macroscopically separated electrodes in a photoelectrochemical cell. Additionally, the driving force of charge separation, namely the energetic difference in the barrier heights across the two type of sites, is small. Herein, we used conformal coatings attached by nanoscale cocatalysts to transform two classes of tunable bandgap semiconductors, i.e., CdS and GaInP₂, into stable and efficient photocatalysts. We used hydrogen evolution and redox-mediator oxidation for model study, and further constructed a two-compartment solar fuel generator that separated stoichiometric H₂ and O₂ products. Distinct from the single charge-transfer direction reported for conventional protective coatings, the coating herein allows for concurrent injection of photoexcited electrons and holes through the coating. The energetic difference between reductive and oxidative catalytic sites was regulated by selectivity and local kinetics. Accordingly, the charge separation behavior was validated using numerical simulations. Following this design principle, the CdS/TiO₂/Rh@CrO_x photocatalysts evolved H₂ while oxidizing reversible polysulfide redox mediators at a maximum rate of 90.6 μmol⋅h^-1⋅cm^-2 by stacking three panels. Powered by a solar cell, the redox-mediated solar water-splitting reactor regenerated the polysulfide repeatedly and achieved solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 1.7%.

Nanostructure Engineering and Modulation of (Oxy)Nitrides for Application in Visible-Light-Driven Water Splitting

(Oxy)nitride-based nanophotocatalysts have been extensively investigated for solar-to-chemical conversion, and not only allow wide spectral utilization to achieve high theoretical energy conversion efficiency but also exhibit suitable conduction and valence band positions for robust reduction and oxidation of water. During the past decades, a few reviews on the research progress in designing and synthesizing new visible-light-responsive semiconductors for various applications in solar-to-chemical conversion have been published. However, those on the effects of their bulk and composite (surface/interface) nanostructures on basic processes as well as solar water splitting performances to produce hydrogen are still limited. In this review, a brief introduction on the relationship between the nanostructure photocatalytic properties is included. Three main processes of solar water splitting are involved, allowing the elucidation of the correlation with the nanostructural properties of the photocatalyst such as surface/interface, size, morphology, and bulk structure. Subsequently, the development of methodologies and strategies for modulating the bulk and composite structures to improve the efficiencies of the basic processes, particularly charge separation, is summarized in detail. Finally, the prospects of (oxy)nitride-based photocatalysts such as controlled synthesis, modulation of 1D/2D morphology, exposed facet regulation, heterostructure formation, theoretical simulation, and time- and space-resolved spectroscopy are discussed.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of SiC-Based Ternary Graphene Materials: A DFT Study and the Photocatalytic Mechanism

A graphene-like semiconductor composite is one of the most promising photocatalyst that does not use noble metals. These composites have excellent photocatalytic properties and have attracted great attention for water splitting. Here, a facile method called the hydrothermal method was used to prepare graphene oxide (GO)/SiC/MoS₂ composites. Under visible-light irradiation, the GO/SiC/MoS₂ composite had excellent photocatalytic production of hydrogen from water splitting. In particular, the catalyst added 8 wt % of Mo weight yielded the highest quantum of 20.45% at 400-700 nm of wavelength. A positive synergistic effect between the layered GO and MoS₂ components contributed to the enhanced photoactivity of the SiC particles. The synergistic effect reduced the recombination of photogenerated holes and electrons, enhanced the rate of electron transfer, and provided more reaction active sites for water splitting. The interactions among SiC, GO, and MoS₂ were investigated using a density functional theory. The calculations showed that the relative positions between graphene only slightly affect the stability of the interface, and the MoS₂ layers have a great influence. The photocatalytic mechanism was also discussed, and electron transfer was predicted.
