Abstract
Azo dyes are typical toxic and refractory organic pollutants widely used in the textile industry. Bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) have great potential for the treatment of azo dyes with the help of microorganisms as biocatalysts and have advanced significantly in recent years. However, the latest and significant advancement and achievements of BESs treating azo dyes have not been reviewed since 8 years ago. This review thus focuses on the recent investigations of BESs treating azo dyes from the year of 2013-2020 in order to broaden the knowledge and deepen the understanding in this field. In this review, azo dyes degradation mechanisms of BESs are first elaborated, followed by the introduction of BES configurations with the emphasis on the novelties. The azo dye degradation performance of BESs is then presented to demonstrate their effectiveness in azo dye removal. Effects of various operating parameters on the overall performance of BESs are comprehensively elucidated, including electrode materials, external resistances and applied potentials, initial concentrations of azo dyes, and co-substrates. Predominant microorganisms responsible for degradation of azo dyes in BESs are highlighted in details. Furthermore, the combination of BESs with other processes to further improve the azo dye removal are discussed. Finally, an outlook on the future research directions and challenges is provided from the viewpoint of realistic applications of the technology.

Abstract
The use of dyes dates to ancient times and has increased due to population and industrial growth, leading to the rise of synthetic dyes. These pollutants are of great environmental impact and azo dyes deserve special attention due their widespread use and challenging degradation. Among the biological solutions developed to mitigate this issue, bacteria are highlighted for being versatile organisms, which can be applied as single organism cultures, microbial consortia, in bioreactors, acting in the detoxification of azo dyes breakage by-products and have the potential to combine biodegradation with the production of products of economic interest. These characteristics go hand in hand with the ability of various strains to act under various chemical and physical parameters, such as a wide range of pH, salinity, and temperature, with good performance under industry, and environmental, relevant conditions. This review encompasses studies with promising results related to the use of bacteria in the bioremediation of environments contaminated with azo dyes in the most diverse techniques and parameters, both in environmental and laboratory samples, also addressing their mechanisms and the legislation involving these dyes around the world, showcasing the importance of bacterial bioremediation, specialty in a scenario in an ever-increasing pursuit for sustainable production.

Abstract
The biological treatment of textile wastewater discharged from the dye baths and rinsing processes are challenged by both high temperatures of 50-80 °C and sulfate reduction. At present, most studies report azo dyes can be removed under mesophilic conditions, but the sulfate reduction is inevitable, consuming extra electron donors and producing undesirable sulfide. In this work, a Caldanaerobacter (> 97%) dominated extreme-thermophilic consortium (EX-AO7) was enriched using xylose as the substrate. The typical sulfate-reducing enzymes such as sulfite oxidase and sulfite reductase were not identified in enriched EX-AO7 by the metagenomic analysis. Then, the decolorization and sulfate reduction were expectedly decoupled by enriched EX-AO7 in extreme-thermophilic conditions, in which no sulfide was detected during the AO7 decolorization process. AO7 of 100 and 200 mg/L could be totally decolorized by EX-AO7. However, when 400 mg/L AO7 was added, the residual AO7 concentration was 22 ± 19 mg/L after 24 h, which was mainly due to the toxicity of AO7. Dosing zero-valent iron (ZVI) could also promote AO7 decolorization by 1.7 times since the addition of ZVI could provide a proliferative environment for EX-AO7 growth. Thereby, our work provides a new paradigm to promote the AZO dyes decolorization and minimize sulfate reduction.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Cu 2O Cabbage/RGO Nanocomposites under Visible Light Irradiation. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13111712. Abstract
Towards the utilization of Cu2O nanomaterial for the degradation of industrial dye pollutants such as methylene blue and methyl orange, the graphene-incorporated Cu2O nanocomposites (GCC) were developed via a precipitation method. Using Hummers method, the grapheme oxide (GO) was initially synthesized. The varying weight percentages (1-4 wt %) of GO was incorporated along with the precipitation of Cu2O catalyst. Various characterization techniques such as Fourier-transform infra-red (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffused reflectance (UV-DRS), Raman spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and electro chemical impedance (EIS) were followed for characterization. The cabbage-like morphology of the developed Cu2O and its composites were ascertained from field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). In addition, the growth mechanism was also proposed. The results infer that 2 wt % GO-incorporated Cu2O composites shows the highest value of degradation efficiency (97.9% and 96.1%) for MB and MO at 160 and 220 min, respectively. Further, its catalytic performance over visible region (red shift) was also enhanced to an appreciable extent, when compared with that of other samples.

Abstract
The feasibility of mixed dye wastewater treatment was evaluated with a novel integrated bioprocess that consisted of a hybrid anaerobic reactor (HAR) with a built-in bioelectrochemical system, an aerobic biofilm reactor (ABFR) and a denitrification reactor (DR). The position of the DR significantly affected chemical oxygen demand (COD) and colority in effluent, and placing the DR after the ABFR improved effluent quality probably due to minimization of the undesired autoxidation of aromatic amine in dye wastewater. The optimal integrated process of HAR + ABFR + DR efficiently treated mixed dye wastewater, and concentrations of COD and TN were decreased down to 75 ± 18 mg/L and 12.91 ± 0.31 mg/L, respectively, along with colority 48 ± 4 times. Total phosphorus reduced to below 0.5 mg/L with coagulation using poly aluminum chloride, and the effluent quality fully met the discharge standard. This comprehensive study suggests the feasibility of the BES based process for practical application to mixed dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Excess sludge contains a large amount of organic matter, most of which is present in the form of bacteria and extracellular polymeric substances. In this study, a photosynthetic bioelectrochemical system (BES) combined with ultrasonic treatment (UT) was investigated to mineralize sludge. The sludge was disintegrated by the UT, and the supernatant separated from the treated sludge was further degraded through a bioelectrochemical system containing photosynthetic bacteria (PSB-BES). The UT efficiency was enhanced by supernatant separation. The PSB-BES method effectively improved the degradation of the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) from the supernatant. The SCOD and protein removal were increased 1.4 and 1.5 times, respectively, compared to BES without PSB. In addition, the effects of several key operating factors including illumination, voltage, and temperature were systematically investigated. This study provides a basis for further development of sludge mineralization processes. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The sludge was disintegrated by the ultrasound treatment. The supernatant separated from treated sludge was further degraded by a bioelectrochemical system combined with photosynthetic bacteria. The ultrasonic treatment efficiency was enhanced by supernatant separation. The PSB-BES method effectively improved the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) degradation from the supernatant. The effects of several key operating factors including light (dark-photo), voltage, and temperature were systematically investigated.
