Fabrication of Durably Antibacterial Cotton Fabrics by Robust and Uniform Immobilization of Silver Nanoparticles via Mussel-Inspired Polydopamine/Polyethyleneimine Coating

Enhancing Antimicrobial Performance of Gauze via Modification by Ag-Loaded Polydopamine Submicron Particles

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are known for their antibacterial properties and their ability to promote wound healing. By incorporating silver nanoparticles into medical gauze, the resulting composite material shows promise as an advanced wound dressing. However, clinical applications are hindered by challenges related to the stability of silver nanoparticle loading on the gauze as nanoparticle leaching can compromise antibacterial efficacy. In this study, silver nanoparticles were immobilized onto polydopamine (PDA) submicron particles, which were then used to modify medical gauze. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was employed to analyze the elemental distribution on the modified gauze, confirming successful surface modification. The antibacterial properties of the modified gauze were assessed using a laser scanning confocal microscope (CLSM). The results demonstrated a significant reduction in the adhesion rates of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) by 99.1% and 63%, respectively, on the PDA-Ag-modified gauze. Optical density (OD) measurements at 590 nm indicated that the modified gauze effectively inhibited biofilm formation, underscoring its potent antimicrobial capabilities. Further antibacterial efficacy was evaluated by diluting and plating co-cultured bacterial solutions with the modified dressing, followed by 24 h incubation and colony counting. The gauze exhibited an antibacterial efficiency of 99.99% against E. coli and 99.8% against S. aureus. Additionally, cell compatibility tests, involving the co-culture of PDA-Ag composites with human cells, demonstrated excellent biocompatibility. These findings suggest that PDA-Ag-modified medical gauze holds significant potential for the treatment of infected wounds, offering a promising solution to improve wound care through enhanced antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility.

Construction of durable antibacterial cellulose textiles through grafting dynamic disulfide-containing amino-compound and nanosilver deposition

Cotton textile is very comfortable to wear, and also provides an ideal environment for bacterial propagation, easily causing harm to human health. In order to address this issue, various antibacterial techniques are employed for cotton finishing. However, some processes are complex and involve the use of environmentally unfriendly chemicals. In this work, a durable and efficient antibacterial cotton fabric was prepared via grafting of an amino-compound containing dynamic disulfide bonds, and then in-situ deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Briefly, the reactive α-lipoic acid-modified polyethyleneimine (mPEI) was introduced to the cotton fibers via thiol-ene click reaction. Subsequently, the amino groups and dynamically-generated sulfhydryl groups in the mPEI molecules were used to initiate the ultrafast reduction of silver ions without the participation of additional reductant, constructing a stable antibacterial layer on fiber surface. The results reveal that the amino and thiol groups of mPEI could form coordination bonds with the deposited silver nanoparticles, and the antibacterial ability of AgNP@cotton-g-mPEI fabric remains at a high level even after 20 washing cycles. After 30 min of contact with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), the antibacterial rates against both bacteria reached 99.99 %. Meanwhile, the network matrix constructed by the recombination of the dynamic disulfide bonds in mPEI endows the cotton fabric with detectable wrinkle resistance and encouraging anti-ultraviolet effect. The present work provides a novel alternative for preparation of durable and efficient antibacterial textiles.

Investigation of Antimicrobial Effects of Polydopamine-Based Composite Coatings

Herein, polydopamine (PDA)-based antimicrobial coatings loaded with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and gentamicin were designed and prepared on glass slides using two different approaches. To our knowledge, this study was performed for the first time with the aim to compare these methods (viz., in situ loading and physical adsorption method) regarding the loading and release behavior of payloads. In one method, gentamicin was in situ loaded on PDA-coated substrates during PDA polymerization followed by Ag NPs immobilization (named as Ag@Gen/PDA); for the second method, Ag NPs and gentamicin were simultaneously loaded onto PDA via physical adsorption by immersing pre-formed PDA coatings into a mixed solution of Ag NPs and gentamicin (named as Ag/Gen@PDA). The loading and release characteristics of these antimicrobial coatings were compared, and both gave variable outcomes. The in situ loading method consequently provided a relatively slow release of loaded antimicrobials, i.e., approx. 46% for Ag@Gen/PDA as compared to 92% from physically adsorbed Ag/GenPDA in an immersion period of 30 days. A similar trend was observed for gentamicin release, i.e., ~0.006 µg/mL from Ag@Gen/PDA and 0.02 µg/mL from Ag/Gen@PDA each day. The slower antimicrobial release from Ag@Gen/PDA coatings would ultimately provide an effective long-term antimicrobial property as compared to Ag/Gen@PDA. Finally, the synergistic antimicrobial activities of these composite coatings were assessed against two microbial species, namely, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, hence providing evidence in the prevention of bacterial colonization.

Preparation of functional and reactive nanosilver nanogels using oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose

The designing of functional and reactive nanosilver has been carried out by in-situ reduction of silver nitrate using oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (OCMC). The reduction process is also accompanied by the stabilization of nanoparticles using the OCMC polymer chain, leading to the formation of a structure where nanosilver is entrapped within OCMC gel. The silver nanogels characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are found to be ∼22 nm. By virtue of the presence of dialdehyde functionality around the silver nanogels, they have the ability to react with a polymer having a complementary functional group. The nanogels have exhibited prominent antimicrobial activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It has been observed that a 0.3 mM concentration of silver nanogel is active in inhibiting bacterial growth. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized Ag nanogels was dose-dependent, with 99.9 % of E. coli and S. aureus destroyed within 5 h at a concentration of 0.4 mM Ag nanogels. The nanogels disrupted the bacterial cell wall and generated reactive oxygen species inside the cell, which resulted in cell death. This investigation provides a very interesting application as a coating for biomedical implants and devices.

A Bifunctional Spray Coating Reduces Contamination on Surfaces by Repelling and Killing Pathogens

Surface-mediated transmission of pathogens is a major concern with regard to the spread of infectious diseases. Current pathogen prevention methods on surfaces rely on the use of biocides, which aggravate the emergence of antimicrobial resistance and pose harmful health effects. In response, a bifunctional and substrate-independent spray coating is presented herein. The bifunctional coating relies on wrinkled polydimethylsiloxane microparticles, decorated with biocidal gold nanoparticles to induce a "repel and kill" effect against pathogens. Pathogen repellency is provided by the structural hierarchy of the microparticles and their surface chemistry, whereas the kill mechanism is achieved using functionalized gold nanoparticles embedded on the microparticles. Bacterial tests with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa reveal a 99.9% reduction in bacterial load on spray-coated surfaces, while antiviral tests with Phi6─a bacterial virus often used as a surrogate to SARS-CoV-2─demonstrate a 98% reduction in virus load on coated surfaces. The newly developed spray coating is versatile, easily applicable to various surfaces, and effective against various pathogens, making it suitable for reducing surface contamination in frequently touched, heavy traffic, and high-risk surfaces.

Inspired by the Periodontium: A Universal Bacteria-Defensive Hydrogel for Preventing Percutaneous Device-Related Infection

Percutaneous device-related infection has greatly shortened the service period of devices and seriously reduced the quality of life of patients. Bacteria are one of the main pathogenic factors and cannot be effectively and conveniently eradicated by traditional strategies (e.g., construct coatings and introduce antibiotics), due to the complex interface among medical devices, surrounding tissue, and colonizing bacteria. Inspired by the periodontium, a universal bacteria-defensive hydrogel adapting to the complicated interface is fabricated by introducing phenol-amine chemistry to a polymeric matrix of N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HPC hydrogels). The HPC hydrogels with excellent toughness (2.1 MJ/m3), adhesion (10.2 and 13.2 kPa for pigskin and Ti-6Al-4V alloy, respectively), and antibacterial property (up to 99.9% for both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) contributed to the innate microbe barrier via sealing the tissue-device interface and adaptive defense to eradicate bacteria. Meanwhile, bacterial invasion experiments demonstrate HPC hydrogels possess both a bacteria-defensive property (up to 24 h) and cell-protecting function at the same time. Furthermore, the biocompatibility of HPC hydrogels is verified in tests for in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo irritation. Hence, the designed HPC hydrogels are considered as an emerging and universal candidate for preventing bacterial infection and can protect the deep tissue around a percutaneous device.

Polyphenol based hybrid nano-aggregates modified collagen fibers of biological valve leaflets to achieve enhanced mechanical, anticoagulation and anti-calcification properties

Glutaraldehyde (Glut)-crosslinked porcine pericardium and bovine pericardium are mainly consisted of collagen and widely used for the preparation of heterogenous bioprosthetic heart valves (BHV), which play an important role in the replacement therapy of severe valvular heart disease, while their durability is limited by degeneration due to calcification, thrombus, endothelialization difficulty and prosthetic valve endocarditis. Herein, we develop a novel BHV, namely, TPly-BP, based on natural tannic acid and polylysine to improve the durability of Glut crosslinked bovine pericardium (Glut-BP). Impressively, tannic acid and polylysine could form nanoaggregates via multiple hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds, and the introduction of nanoaggregates not only improved the mechanical properties and collagen stability but also endowed TPly-BP with good biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. Compared to Glut-BP, TPly-BP showed significantly reduced cytotoxicity, improved endothelial cell adhesion, a low hemolysis ratio and obviously reduced platelet adhesion. Importantly, TPly-BP exhibited great antibacterial and in vivo anti-calcification ability, which was expected to improve the in vivo durability of BHVs. These results suggested that TPly-BP would be a potential candidate for BHV.

Therapeutic Applications of Self-assembled Indole-3-butanoyl-polyethylenimine Nanostructures

This study demonstrates the therapeutic potential of indole-3-butanoyl-polyethylenimine (IBP) nanostructures formed via self-assembly in aqueous system. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis confirmed the formation of the nanostructures in the size range of ~ 194-331 nm. These nanostructures showed commendable antimicrobial activity against wide range of microbes including multi-drug resistant bacteria. Besides, appreciable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were also observed. Results of cytotoxicity studies, performed on normal transformed human embryonic kidney (HEK 293) cells and human red blood cells (hRBCs), revealed almost non-toxic behavior of these nanostructures, however, remarkable toxicity on human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), human osteosarcoma cells (Mg63) and human liver cancer cells (HepG2) was observed. The pre-apoptotic and anti-proliferative activity of IBP nanostructures were confirmed by acridine orange/propidium iodide dual staining assay followed by confocal microscopy and scratch assay on Mg63 cells. Taken together, these results advocate the promising potential of the synthesized IBP nanostructures in the therapeutic applications.

Functional non-glutaraldehyde treated porcine pericardium for anti-coagulation, anti-calcification, and endothelial proliferation bioprosthetic heart valves

In the last decade, the number of transcatheter heart valve replacement for severe heart valve disease has increased exponentially. Although the bioprosthetic artificial heart valve (BHV) has similar fluid dynamics performance to the original heart valve compared with mechanical heart valve so that there is no need to take long-term anticoagulant drugs to prevent thromboembolism, transcatheter BHV replacement are still at risk for thrombosis during the first few months according to the clinical data. However, the use of antithrombotic drugs can also increase the risk of bleeding. Therefore, it is particularly important to improve the anticoagulant properties for the BHV itself. In this work, a kind of non-glutaraldehyde cross-linked BHV material with excellent antithrombotic ability has been prepared from carboxylated oxazolidine treated porcine pericardium (consisting of collagen, elastin and glycoprotein) with the further graft of the anticoagulant heparin sodium via hydrophilic modified chitosan. Along with the similar mechanical properties and collagen stability comparable to the glutaraldehyde cross-linked porcine pericardium (PP), these functional non-glutaraldehyde cross-linked PPs exhibit better biocompatibility, promoted endothelial proliferation and superior anti-calcification ability. More importantly, excellent anticoagulant activity can be observed in the hematological experiments in vivo and in vitro. In summary, these excellent performances make these functional non-glutaraldehyde cross-linked PPs great potentialities in the BHV applications.

Injectable shape memory hydroxyethyl cellulose/soy protein isolate based composite sponge with antibacterial property for rapid noncompressible hemorrhage and prevention of wound infection

Uncontrollable hemorrhage and subsequent wound infection are severe threats to life, especially for the deep noncompressible massive bleeding. However, traditional hemostatic materials are ineffective for extreme bleeding and subsequent wound infection. Here, we prepared an injectable shape memory hydroxyethyl cellulose/soy protein isolate based composite sponge (EHSS) for rapid noncompressible hemorrhage and prevention of wound infection. The nano silver (AgNPs)-loaded shape memory sponge (EHP@Ag) was fabricated by mussel-inspired polydopamine coating EHSS sponge, then reducing and immobilizing AgNPs in situ. The EHP@Ag sponges showed rapid blood-triggered shape recovery speed, which is beneficial for administering noncompressible hemorrhage. The results of the hemostatic experiment in vivo demonstrated that EHP@Ag sponge exhibited a desirable hemostasis effect (hemostasis time: 22.75 ± 3.86 s, blood loss: 285.25 ± 24.93 mg) compared to the commercial gelatin sponge (hemostasis time: 49.25 ± 3.30 s, blood loss: 755.50 ± 24.45 mg). Meanwhile, the EHP@Ag sponge has an efficient antibacterial property. Furthermore, the antibacterial experiment in vivo showed that the EHP@Ag sponges could kill bacteria effectively and reduce the bacteria-induced inflammatory response. In summary, the shape memory sponges can quickly control bleeding and avoid bacterial infection, which shows great potential for clinical application as a multifunctional hemostatic agent.

Mussel-Inspired Multicomponent Codeposition Strategy toward Antibacterial and Lubricating Multifunctional Coatings on Bioimplants

Bacterial infections and limited surface lubrication are the two key challenges for bioimplants in dynamic contact with tissues. However, the simultaneous lubricating and antibacterial properties of the bioimplants have rarely been investigated. In this work, we successfully developed a multifunctional coating with simultaneous antibacterial and lubricating properties for surface functionalization of bioimplant materials. The multifunctional coating was fabricated on a polyurethane (PU) substrate via polydopamine (PDA)-assisted multicomponent codeposition, containing polyethyleneimine (PEI) and trace amounts of copper (Cu) as synergistic antibacterial components and zwitterionic poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) as the lubricating component. The obtained PDA(Cu)/PEI/PMPC coating showed excellent antibacterial activity (antibacterial efficiency: ∼99%) to both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus compared with bare PU. The excellent antibacterial properties were attributed to the combined effect of anti-adhesion capability of hydrophilic PMPC and PEI and bactericidal activity of Cu in the coating. Meanwhile, the coefficient of friction of the coating was significantly decreased by ∼52% compared with bare PU owing to the high hydration feature of PMPC, suggesting the superior lubricating property. Furthermore, the PDA(Cu)/PEI/PMPC coating was highly biocompatible toward human umbilical vein endothelial cells demonstrated by in vitro cytotoxicity tests. This study not only contributes to the chemistry of PDA-assisted multicomponent codeposition but also provides a facile and practical way for rational design of multifunctional coatings for medical devices.

Cellulose-Based Nanomaterials Advance Biomedicine: A Review

There are various biomaterials, but none fulfills all requirements. Cellulose biopolymers have advanced biomedicine to satisfy high market demand and circumvent many ecological concerns. This review aims to present an overview of cellulose knowledge and technical biomedical applications such as antibacterial agents, antifouling, wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and bone regeneration. It includes an extensive bibliography of recent research findings from fundamental and applied investigations. Cellulose-based materials are tailorable to obtain suitable chemical, mechanical, and physical properties required for biomedical applications. The chemical structure of cellulose allows modifications and simple conjugation with several materials, including nanoparticles, without tedious efforts. They render the applications cheap, biocompatible, biodegradable, and easy to shape and process.

Breathable, Antibacterial, and Biocompatible Collagen Fiber Network Decorated with Zwitterionic Silver Nanoparticles for Plantar Pressure Monitoring

Foot plantar pressure monitoring and gait analysis are of great significant in footwear design, sport biomechanics, injury prevention, and early warning of disease. Flexible and wearable smart insoles pave a feasible way for these application scenarios. However, the majority of the currently developed smart insoles are composed of synthetic polymers (e.g., plastics, rubbers, etc.), leading to inevitable problems associated with air permeability, hygiene condition, biocompatibility, and wearing comfort. Here, a new paradigm of a natural collagen fiber network (CFN) with soft and breathable features, which can be obtained by facilely treating animal hides via conventional leather pretreatment process, is selected as substrate material for constructing smart insoles due to its high permeability and porosity. Further, biocompatible zwitterionic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with both carboxybetaine and catechol groups on the interface were designed for firmly and uniformly immobilization onto the hierarchical micro-/nanoscale fibers of CFN through mussel-inspired catechol/amino chemistry, giving rise to both good antibacterial property and pressure sensing capability of the resultant material. The finally developed smart insole by using the AgNPs decorated CFN exhibits good capability for plantar pressure mapping and gait feature analysis. Especially, the smart insole will be very suitable for pressure monitoring and gait analysis of a diabetic foot with sensitive skin that requires a high biocompatible and antibacterial environment.

Key ingredients and recycling strategy of personal protective equipment (PPE): Towards sustainable solution for the COVID-19 like pandemics

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the complications of plastic trash management and disposal. The current situation of living in fear of transmission of the COVID-19 virus has further transformed our behavioural models, such as regularly using personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and single-use applications for day to day needs etc. It has been estimated that with the passage of the coronavirus epidemic every month, there is expected use of 200 billion pieces of single-use facemasks and gloves. PPE are well established now as life-saving items for medicinal specialists to stay safe through the COVID-19 pandemic. Different processes such as glycolysis, hydrogenation, aminolysis, hydrolysis, pyrolysis, and gasification are now working on finding advanced technologies to transfer waste PPE into value-added products. Here, in this article, we have discussed the recycling strategies of PPE, important components (such as medical gloves, gowns, masks & respirators and other face and eye protection) and the raw materials used in PPE kits. Further, the value addition methods to recycling the PPE kits, chemical & apparatus used in recycling and recycling components into value-added products. Finally, the biorenewable materials in PPE for textiles components have been discussed along with concluded remarks.

From Unimolecular Template to Silver Nanocrystal Clusters: An Effective Strategy to Balance Antibacterial Activity and Cytotoxicity

Silver nanomaterials have attracted a great deal of interest due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, it is still challenging to balance the high antibacterial efficiency with low damage to biological cells of silver nanostructures, especially when the diameter decreases to less than 10 nm. Here, we developed a new type of Ag nanohybrid material via a unimolecular micelle template method, which presents amazing antibacterial activities and almost noncytotoxicity. First, water-soluble multiarm star-shaped brushlike copolymer α-CD-g-[(PEO₄₀-g-PAA₅₀)-b-PEO₅]₁₈ was precisely synthesized and its micelle behavior in different solvents was revealed. Then, nanocrystal clusters assembled by Ag grains (Ag@Template NCs) were prepared through an in situ redox route using the unimolecular micelle of α-CD-g-[(PEO₄₀-g-PAA₅₀)-b-PEO₅]₁₈ as the soft template, AgNO₃ as a precursor, and tetrabutylammonium borohydride (TBAB) as the reducing agent. The overall size of the achieved Ag@Template NCs is controlled by the template structure at around 40 nm (D_h in DMF), and the size of the Ag grain can be easily regulated from ∼1 to ∼5 nm by adjusting the feeding ratio of AgNO₃/acrylic acid (AA) units in the template from 1:10 to 1:1. Benefitting from the structural design of the template, all Ag@Template NCs prepared here exhibit excellent dispersibility and chemical stability in different aqueous environments (neutral, pH = 5.5, and 0.9% NaCl physiological saline solution), which play a crucial role in the long-term storage and potential application in a complex physiological environment. The antibacterial and cytotoxicity tests indicate that Ag@Template NCs display much better performance than Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), which have a comparable overall size of ∼25 nm. The inhibitory capability of Ag@Template NCs to bacteria strongly depends on the grain size. Specifically, the Ag@Template-1 NC assembled by the smallest grains (1.6 ± 0.3 nm) presents the best antibacterial activity. For E. coli (-), the MIC value is as low as 5 μg/mL (0.36 μg/mL of Ag), while for S. aureus (+), the value is around 10 μg/mL (0.72 μg/mL of Ag). The survival rate of L02 cells and lactate dehydrogenase assay together illustrate the low cytotoxicity possessed by the prepared Ag@Template NCs. Therefore, the proposed Ag@Template NC structure successfully resolves the high reactivity, instability, and fast oxidation issues of the ultrasmall Ag nanoparticles, and integrates high antibacterial efficiency and nontoxicity to biological cells into one platform, which implies its broad potential application in biomedicine.

Graphene- and Nanoparticle-Embedded Antimicrobial and Biocompatible Cotton/Silk Fabrics for Protective Clothing

Protection against pathogens using personal protective equipment is essential yet challenging in healthcare settings. Concerns over emerging biothreats and outbreaks of infectious diseases underscore the need for antimicrobial and biocompatible protective clothing to protect patients and staff. Herein, we report the antimicrobial efficacy and cytotoxicity of cotton/silk fabrics containing embedded reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and Ag/Cu nanoparticles (NPs), prepared using a 3-glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxy silane coupling agent followed by chemical reduction and vacuum heat treatment. Embedding NPs on top of the RGO layer substantially increased the antimicrobial activity. All RGO-Ag NPs or RGO-Cu NPs embedded in cotton or silk fabrics reduced the viability of approximately 99% of the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. RGO-Ag NPs embedded into cotton or silk fabrics reduced the viability of the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus by 78-99%, which was higher than the growth inhibition by RGO-Cu NPs samples against S. aureus. Both silk and cotton containing RGO-Cu NPs produced a greater reduction in the viability of the yeast Candida albicans compared to RGO-Ag NPs fabrics. All RGO-Ag NPs or RGO-Cu NPs embedded in cotton or silk fabrics showed good washing durability by sustaining good bactericidal activity, even on washing up to 10 times. Moreover, none of the RGO-Ag or RGO-Cu fabrics reduced mammalian cells' (HEK293) viability by >30%, suggesting low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. These findings show that RGO-NPs embedded in cotton or silk fabrics have great potential for use in protective clothing and medical textiles.

Rapid Biocidal Activity of N-Halamine-Functionalized Polydopamine and Polyethylene Imine Coatings

Microorganisms easily adhere to the surface of substrates and further form biofilms, which present problems in various fields. Therefore, the development of surfaces with antimicrobial adhesion or viability is a promising approach. In this study, we were committed to develop a rapid sterilizing coating. First, polyester fibers were immersed into a mixing solution of dopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) for forming the co-deposition of PDA and PEI coatings. After this, the co-deposition of PDA and PEI coatings was immersed in a solution of household bleach for chlorination. We found that the nitrogens of PDA and PEI could be chlorinated repeatedly and that the oxidative chlorine content increased with the increasing PEI concentration upon co-deposition. Next, the efficacy of the co-deposition of chlorinated PDA and PEI coatings in eliminating Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was investigated. We found that the antibacterial ability of the coatings increased with increasing PEI content. In addition, the chlorinated co-deposition coatings had significantly improved antibacterial properties compared to the unchlorinated ones. The chlorinated co-deposition coatings inactivated >99.99% of S. aureus and >99.9% of E. coli after contact of less than 10 min. Therefore, chlorination of a PDA/PEI co-deposition surface is a feasible method for use in antibacterial coatings.

A Brief Overview of Antimicrobial Nanotextiles Prepared by In Situ Synthesis and Deposition of Silver Nanoparticles on Cotton

Antimicrobial nanotextiles are prepared by coating or deposition of the biocides such as organic compounds or nanoparticles on the textile fibers. The deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on textiles has received increased attention due to their well-known antimicrobial properties. Recently, the technique of in situ synthesis and deposition of AgNPs on cotton is being used frequently to prepare antimicrobial nanotextiles. The technique involves complexation of the Ag⁺ ions in cotton fibers followed by their reduction to generate the particles. This in situ synthesis and deposition approach provides several advantages over the post synthesis deposition or grafting process. In this brief overview, we have presented basic information about different biocides used to prepare antimicrobial nanotextiles and highlighted the importance of in situ synthesis and deposition of AgNPs on cotton to prepare the antimicrobial nanotextiles. The recent achievements in this field and future challenges that need to be addressed are presented.

Recent breakthroughs of antibacterial and antiviral protective polymeric materials during COVID-19 pandemic and after pandemic: Coating, packaging, and textile applications

The global epidemic owing to COVID-19 has generated awareness to ensuring best practices for avoiding the microorganism spread. Indeed, because of the increase in infections caused by bacteria and viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, the global demand for antimicrobial materials is growing. New technologies by using polymeric systems are of great interest. Virus transmission by contaminated surfaces leads to the spread of infectious diseases, so antimicrobial coatings are significant in this regard. Moreover, antimicrobial food packaging is beneficial to prevent the spread of microorganisms during food processing and transportation. Furthermore, antimicrobial textiles show an effective role. We aim to provide a review of prepared antimicrobial polymeric materials for use in coating, food packaging, and textile during the COVID-19 pandemic and after pandemic.

Skin-inspired nanofibrillated cellulose-reinforced hydrogels with high mechanical strength, long-term antibacterial, and self-recovery ability for wearable strain/pressure sensors

The advent of electric skins (E-skin) with tactile sensation, flexibility, and human affinity characteristics have attracted considerable attention in extensive research fields, including intelligent robots and health monitoring, etc. To improve the intrinsic brittleness of hydrogels, a multifunctional E-skin was fabricated involving a TEMPO-NFC and a covalently cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM) network. In this work, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as long-term antibacterial agent and conductive fillers were coated onto NFC nanofibers. Subsequently, this nanocomposite hydrogel was synthesized by free radical copolymerization of AM monomers with PNAg fibers as interpenetrating fibers network. Importantly with NFC present, the nanocomposite hydrogel exhibited superior mechanical performance and excellent self-recovery ability. The obtained sensor with excellent mechanical stability and sensing performance could detect mechanotransduction signal of human movements. This work provides a practicable method to prepare high antibacterial efficiency, excellent mechanical performance, and dual-modal nanocellulose-based hydrogel sensor for the broad-range application in human-motion detection and intelligence skins.

Polydopamine antibacterial materials

Recently, the development of polydopamine (PDA) has demonstrated numerous excellent performances in free radical scavenging, UV shielding, photothermal conversion, and biocompatibility. These unique properties enable PDA to be widely used as efficient antibacterial materials for various applications. Accordingly, PDA antibacterial materials mainly include free-standing PDA materials and PDA-based composite materials. In this review, an overview of PDA antibacterial materials is provided to summarize these two types of antibacterial materials in detail, including the fabrication strategies and antibacterial mechanisms. The future development and challenges of PDA in this field are also presented. It is hoped that this review will provide an insight into the future development of antibacterial functional materials based on PDA.

Unique "posture" of rose Bengal for fabricating personal protective equipment with enhanced daylight-induced biocidal efficiency

The aggregation-caused self-quenching of photosensitizers (PS), especially on a solid substrate, has highly limited their photo-induced biocidal efficiency in practical applications. Here, we designed a unique "posture" of rose Bengal (RB) on cotton-based super-adsorptive fibrous equipment, with RB being separately captured in the mesopores of porous organic polymers (POPs). The resultant daylight-induced biocidal cotton fabric with enhanced efficiency was named as DBwEE-Cotton. The enhanced biocidal activity of the DBwEE-Cotton was achieved based on two mechanisms: (1) the separation of RB in mesopores on the fabric avoids the aggregation-caused self-quenching; and (2) other than singlet oxygen generation, RB is forced to undergo type I photoreaction by surrounding the RB with massive amounts of good hydrogen donors (i.e., POP) under daylight irradiation. Given the enhanced production efficiency of reactive oxygen species by the DBwEE-Cotton, 99.9999% of E. coli and L. innocua bacteria were killed within 20 min of daylight exposure. The DBwEE-Cotton also presents excellent wash and light durability with no biocidal function loss. The development of DBwEE-Cotton provides a facile strategy of avoiding aggregation-caused self-quenching and modulating photoreactions of PS on a flexible substrate, which may guide the design of novel personal protective equipment (PPE) integrated with improved biocidal efficiency, wearability, and repeated and long-term applicability for protecting people from lethal infectious diseases.

Novel Strategy of Mussel-Inspired Immobilization of Naringinase with High Activity Using a Polyethylenimine/Dopamine Co-deposition Method

Mussel-inspired surface chemistry is recognized as a simple, efficient, and mild surface modification method and has become a research hotspot in many fields. In this study, polyethylenimine/dopamine was coated on the surface of SBA-15 using a co-deposition method, making it possible to immobilize naringinase with high activity and operation stability. The optimal modification and immobilization conditions as well as enzyme properties were investigated. The naringinase activity can reach up to 753.78 U/g carrier, which was much higher than those of the previous works. Besides, the residual naringinase activity still kept 78.91% of the initial activity after one month of storage and maintained 60.79% after 8 cycles. Therefore, the strategy of mussel-inspired enzyme immobilization could be recognized as a promising and universal enzyme immobilization method, with the advantages of high relative enzyme activity, enzyme carrying rate, enzyme activity recovery rate, and good reusability and storage stability.
