A Chemodosimetric Approach for Fluorimetric Detection of Hg2+ Ions by Trinuclear Zn(II)/Cd(II) Schiff Base Complex: First Case of Intermediate Trapping in a Chemodosimetric Approach

Two isostructural Zn/Co-MOFs with penetrating structures: multifunctional properties of both luminescence sensing and conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates

Two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, {[Zn(HL)(bpea)]·DMF}n (Zn-MOF-1) and {[Co(HL)(bpea)]·DMF}n (Co-MOF-2) (H3L = 3-(3,5-dicarboxybenzyloxy)benzoic acid, bpea = 1,2-di(pyridyl)ethane), were obtained by the reaction of H3L and N-containing ligand bpea with Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and Co(NO3)2·6H2O, respectively. The isomorphic Zn-MOF-1 and Co-MOF-2 featured a 3D penetrating framework with different stabilities, luminescence, and catalytic properties. Luminescence measurement indicated that Zn-MOF-1 could be used to detect Al3+ through a turn-on effect with a detection limit of 0.42 μM. The sensing mechanism experiments showed that the enhanced luminescence of Zn-MOF-1 toward Al3+ may be due to the weak interaction between Al3+ and Zn-MOF-1 and the absorbance-caused enhancement (ACE) mechanism. Meanwhile, both Zn-MOF-1 and Co-MOF-2 showed interesting CO2 adsorption properties and could catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides resulting in 96 and 92% ideal products within 12 hours, respectively. They can be cycled up to 5 times without significant loss of catalytic efficiency.

Phenanthroline and Schiff Base associated Cu(II)-coordinated compounds containing N, O as donor atoms for potent anticancer activity

As an inherent metal ion, copper has been the subject of investigation for developing a novel antitumoral compound that exhibits fewer adverse effects. Copper serves as a cofactor in multiple enzymes, generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), facilitates tumour evolution, metastasis and angiogenesis and has been detected at elevated concentrations in the serum and tissues of various human cancer types. In the given setting, utilising two methodologies in developing novel Copper-based pharmaceuticals for anti-cancer applications is standard practice. These approaches involve either the sequestration of unbound Copper ions or the synthesis of Copper complexes that induce cellular apoptosis. In the past four decades, the latter system has been used, leading to numerous reviews that have examined the anticancer characteristics of a wide range of Copper complexes. These analyses have consistently demonstrated that multiple factors frequently influence the efficacy of these compounds. This review examines the possible anticancer properties of copper and Cu(II) complexes that incorporate Schiff base ligands containing 1,10-phenanthroline. The present study will comprehensively analyse the examined cell lines and mechanistic research associated with each complex.

A highly selective fluorescence turn-on sensor for Hg2+ based on quinolimide in aqueous media and its applications

Herein, a novel fluorescent sensor QPE based on quinolimide was developed, which displayed the highly selective response to Hg2+ through the turn-on signal in aqueous media. The corresponding recognition mechanism of QPE for Hg2+ was investigated by the titration experiments, Job's plots, HRMS, and DFT calculations analysis. QPE could detect Hg2+ in a broad pH range (pH = 4-9) with the LOD of 20 nM and the LOQ of 66 nM. Meanwhile, QPE-loaded test strips were demonstrated in the visual detection of Hg2+. Importantly, QPE exhibited the reliable capability to track Hg2+ in real water and soil samples and yeast cells, indicating that QPE could be used as a prospective tool for monitoring Hg2+ in wide fields.

Role of Labile Methanol on the Bio-inspired Catalytic Activity of a Zn(II)-based Compound: An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

Two Zn(II)-based compounds, [Zn2 L1 (OAc)3 (MeOH)] (1) and [Zn2 L2 (OAc)3 ]n (2), have been reported where HL1 is (E)-4-bromo-2-methoxy-6-(((2-morpholino ethyl)imino) methyl)phenol and HL2 is (E)-4-bromo-2-methoxy-6-(((2-(piperazine-1-yle)ethyl)imino)methyl) phenol. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis unveils vivid change in structural arrangements and dimensionality from 1 to 2 due to change in coordinated atom from oxygen to nitrogen of the ligands. SCXRD study shows that compound 1 is dinuclear but compound 2 has a 1-dimensional polymeric structure having helical chain. Structural diversity greatly influences the catalytic activity. Compound 1 acts as excellent catalyst for conversion of 3, 5-di-tert-butyl catechol (3, 5-DTBC) to 3, 5-di-tert-butylbenzoquinone (3, 5-DTBQ) with the turnover number (kcat ) value of 34.94 sec-1 . Further, compound 1 reveals phosphatase like activity for conversion of disodium salt of (4-nitrophenyl)-phosphate hexahydrate to p-nitrophenolate with the kcat value of 24.64 sec-1 . Interestingly, compound 2 does not show any catalytic activity. To correlate this distinctly different catalytic behavior of two compounds, DFT calculation was carried out. The calculation reveals that detachment of coordinated methanol from coordination sphere of zinc in compound 1 is energetically favourable which creates room for substrate binding, resulting in high catalytic activity. By contrast, in compound 2, detachment of piperazine or Zn-O of -COOH group is energetically unfavourable, resulting in no catalytic activity.

A novel fluorescence probe for the recognition of Cd2+ and its application

A facile fluorescence probe BQBH was synthesized and investigated on its spectrum property. The result showed that the BQBH had high sensitivity and selectivity for Cd²⁺ with lowest detection determined as 0.14 μM by fluorescence response. The 1: 1 binding ratio between BQBH and Cd²⁺ was determined by Job's plot, and the binding details were further confirmed by ¹H NMR titration, FT-IR spectrum and HRMS analysis. The applications including on test paper, smart phone and cell image were all also investigated.

Effect of O-substitution in imidazole based Zn(II) dual fluorescent probes in the light of arsenate detection in potable water: a combined experimental and theoretical approach

Efficient detection of arsenate (AsO₄^3-) from contaminated drinking water extracted from underground has become a matter of utmost necessity and an exquisite challenge owing to the growing public health issue due to arsenicosis. In order to combat this we planned to detect arsenate with the naked eye under UV light using a novel chemosensor material whose structure and functioning as a sensor could be certified mechanistically. Hence we were encouraged to synthesize two differently O-substituted imidazole based homologous ligands: C1 (HL¹ = 2-((E)-(3-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)propylimino)methyl)-6-ethoxyphenol) and C2 (HL² = 2-((E)-(3-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)propylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol). To accomplish the purposeful exploration of the luminescent sensor, we considered Chelation Enhanced Fluorescence (CHEF) and kept on searching for a metal cation that would be able to turn on the fluorescence of the ligands. Considering Zn(II) as the most suitable candidate, luminescent complexes D1 and D2 ({[Zn₂(L¹)₂(I)₂](DMF)} and [Zn₂(L²)₂(I)₂](DMF), respectively) were synthesized and characterized by SXRD, UV-Vis, FT-IR, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. In spite of the resemblance in the solid state structures of D1 and D2, the selective response of D1 towards arsenate with high quenching constants (2.13 × 10⁶), unlike D2, has been demonstrated mechanistically with steady state and time resolved fluorescence titration, solution phase ESI-MS spectral analysis and DFT studies. The selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor D1 explicitly make this material a potent candidate for arsenate detection due to its very low detection limit (8.2 ppb), low cost and user friendly characteristics. Real life implementation of this work in a test strip is expected to prove beneficial for public health to identify arsenate polluted water.

In Situ Assembled Polynuclear Zinc Oxo Clusters Using Modified Schiff Bases as Ligands

A series of different cores and nuclearity zinc metal clusters 1-5 have been synthesized using Zn(ClO4)2·6H2O, Schiff-base primary ligands, and dibenzoyl methane (DBM) or monoethanolamine (MEA) as co-ligand in a room-temperature reaction. The structure of the complexes is characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Among them, (1) [Zn(L1)(DBM)] is mononuclear; (2) [Zn4(L2)2(DBM)4], (3) [Zn4(L2)4(H2O)2(ClO4)2]·2CH2Cl2, and (4) [Zn4(L3)2(DBM)4] have a cubane core; and (5) [Zn4(L4)4(MEA)2(ClO4)2] has a ladderlike core structure. Compounds 1-5 have also been characterized using UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopies. For an in-depth understanding of the absorption spectra of 1 and 3, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed, which suggest that the transitions correspond to the π → π* intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) transitions.

Highly sensitive naphthalimide based Schiff base for the fluorimetric detection of Fe3

A simple 1,8-naphthalimide based Schiff base probe (E)-6-((4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)-2-(2-morpholinoethyl)-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (NDSM) has been designed and synthesized for the specific detection of Fe3+ based on a fluorimetric mode. The absorbance of NDSM at 360 nm increased significantly in acetonitrile : water (7 : 3, v/v) medium only in the presence of Fe3+ ions with a visible colour change from yellow to golden yellow. Likewise, fluorescence emission intensity at 531 nm was almost wholly quenched in the presence of Fe3+. However, other competitive ions influenced insignificantly or did not affect the optical properties of NDSM. Lysosome targetability was expected from NDSM due to the installation of a basic morpholine unit. The LOD was found to be 0.8 μM with a response time of seconds. The fluorescence reversibility of NDSM + Fe3+ was established with complexing agent EDTA. Fe3+ influences the optical properties of NDSM by complexing with it, which blocks C[double bond, length as m-dash]N isomerization in addition to the ICT mechanism. The real-time application of Fe3+ was demonstrated in test paper-based detection, by the construction of a molecular logic gate, quantification of Fe3+ in water samples and fluorescence imaging of Fe3+.

Mercury Toxicity and Detection Using Chromo-Fluorogenic Chemosensors

Mercury (Hg), this non-essential heavy metal released from both industrial and natural sources entered into living bodies, and cause grievous detrimental effects to the human health and ecosystem. The monitoring of Hg2+ excessive accumulation can be beneficial to fight against the risk associated with mercury toxicity to living systems. Therefore, there is an emergent need of novel and facile analytical approaches for the monitoring of mercury levels in various environmental, industrial, and biological samples. The chromo-fluorogenic chemosensors possess the attractive analytical parameters of low-cost, enhanced detection ability with high sensitivity, simplicity, rapid on-site monitoring ability, etc. This review was narrated to summarize the mercuric ion selective chromo-fluorogenic chemosensors reported in the year 2020. The design of sensors, mechanisms, fluorophores used, analytical performance, etc. are summarized and discussed.

A new 7-diethylamino-4-hydroxycoumarin based reversible colorimetric/fluorometric probe for sequential detection of Al3+/PPi and its potential use in biodetection and bioimaging applications

A new 7-diethylamino-4-hydroxycoumarin appended acylhydrazone probe was prepared and utilized for the sequential detection of Al³⁺/PPi in a reversible off–on–off emissive manner. The various practical applications of the probe were established.
