Cyclodextrin-Assisted Hierarchical Aggregation of Dawson-type Polyoxometalate in the Presence of {Re6Se8} Based Clusters

Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior of Confined Dy(III) in a Mixed Heteroatom-Substituted Polyoxotungstate

Two heteroatom-templated Dy(III)-confined polyoxotungstates [H2N(CH3)2]7Na7[Dy2(H2O)7(W4O9)(HPSeW15O54)(α-SeW9O33)2]·31H2O (1) and [H2N(CH3)2]14K2Na18{[Dy2(H2O)13W14O40]2[α-SeW9O33]4[HPSeW15O54]2}·44H2O (2) were synthesized by a one-pot aqueous reaction and structurally characterized. The most distinctive structural feature of complexes 1 & 2 is the simultaneous presence of both trivacant Keggin [α-SeW9O33]8- and Dawson [HPSeW15O54]10- building blocks containing P(III)-Se(IV) heteroatoms. The trimeric polyanion of 1 can be represented as a fusion of two trivacant Keggin [α-SeW9O33]8- and Dawson [HPSeW15O54]10- building units encapsulating the [Dy2(H2O)7(W4O9)]12+ cluster. On the other hand, hexameric polyoxoanions of 2 are described as four trivacant Keggin [α-SeW9O33]8- and two Dawson [HPSeW15O54]10-, building units anchoring a [Dy4(H2O)26W28O80]20+ cluster. The magnetic investigation revealed the presence of significant magnetic anisotropy and slow relaxation of magnetization behavior for complex 1 with a phenomenological energy barrier, Ueff = 13.58 K in the absence of an external magnetic field, and Ueff = 24.57 K in the presence of a 500 Oe external dc magnetic field. On the other hand, complex 2 favors the QTM relaxation process in the absence of an external magnetic field and shows field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization with Ueff = 11.11 K at 1500 Oe applied dc field. The in-depth analysis of magnetic relaxation dynamics shows that the relaxation process follows the Orbach as well as Raman relaxation pathways. Further, the ab initio calculation of the studied complexes confirms that the highly axial ground and first excited energy states (containing pure highest mJ states) are responsible for the observed single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. Remarkably, this is the first example of a mixed heteroatom-based Dy(III)-substituted polyoxotungstate with both trimeric Keggin [α-SeW9O33]8- and Dawson [HPSeW15O54]10- building units showing SMM behavior.

NMR spectroscopy to study cyclodextrin-based host-guest assemblies with polynuclear clusters

Natural cyclodextrin (CD) macrocycles are known to form diverse inclusion complexes with a wide variety of organic molecules, but recent work has revealed that inorganic clusters also form multicomponent supramolecular complexes and edifices. Such molecular assemblies exhibit a high degree of organization in solution governed by various chemical processes including molecular recognition, host-guest attraction, hydrophobic repulsion, or chaotropic effect. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most efficient and practical analytical techniques to characterize the nature, the strength and the mechanism of these interactions in solution. This review provides a brief overview on recent examples of the contribution of NMR to the characterization of hybrid systems in solution based on CD with polynuclear clusters, including polyoxometalates (POMs), metallic clusters and hydroborate clusters. The focus will be first on using 1H (and 13C) NMR of the host, i.e., CD, to identify the nature of the interactions and measure their strength. Then, 2D NMR methods will be illustrated by DOSY as a means of highlighting the clustering phenomena, and by NOESY/ROESY to evidence the spatial proximity and contact within the supramolecular assemblies. Finally, other NMR nuclei will be selected to probe the inorganic part as a guest molecule. Attention will be paid to classical host-guest complexes Cluster@CD, but also to hierarchical multi-scale, multi-component assemblies such as Cluster@CD@Cluster.

Large anion binding in water

Large water-soluble anions with chaotropic character display surprisingly strong supramolecular interactions in water, for example, with macrocyclic receptors, polymers, biomembranes, and other hydrophobic cavities and interfaces. The high affinity is traced back to a hitherto underestimated driving force, the chaotropic effect, which is orthogonal to the common hydrophobic effect. This review focuses on the binding of large anions with water-soluble macrocyclic hosts, including cyclodextrins, cucurbiturils, bambusurils, biotinurils, and other organic receptors. The high affinity of large anions to molecular receptors has been implemented in several lines of new applications, which are highlighted herein.

Supramolecular Host–Guest Assemblies of [M6Cl14]2–, M = Mo, W, Clusters with γ-Cyclodextrin for the Development of CLUSPOMs

Host–guest assemblies open up opportunities for developing novel functional CLUSPOM multicomponent systems based on transition metal clusters (CLUS), polyoxometalates (POMs) and macrocyclic organic ligands. In water–ethanol solution γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) interacts with halide metal clusters [M6Cl14]2– (M = Mo, W) to form sandwich-type structures. The supramolecular association between the clusters and CDs, however, remains weak in solution, and the interactions are not strong enough to prevent the hydrolysis of the inorganic guest. Although analysis of the resulting crystal structures reveals inclusion complexation, 1H NMR experiments in solution show no specific affinity between the two components. The luminescent properties of the host–guest compounds in comparison with the initial cluster complexes are also studied to evaluate the influence of CD.

Association of Keplerate-Type Polyoxometalate {Mo72Fe30} with Tetracycline: Nature of Binding Sites and Antimicrobial Action

The association process between the tetracycline (TC) antibiotic molecule and Keplerate-type nanocluster polyoxometalate (POM) {Mo72Fe30} was studied in aqueous solution. The novel supramolecular ensemble {Mo72Fe30}@TC12.5 was produced, its composition and structure were revealed by means of elemental analysis (C, N, H) and vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman). Based on the spectral data, the POM structure’s integrity was confirmed and binding sites of TC with the Keplerate {Mo72Fe30} surface were found. Due to thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and in-situ Raman spectroscopy during the process of {Mo72Fe30}@TC12.5 thermal destruction, we showed a significant change in the phase composition of POM’s destruction products after association with TC. The antibacterial activity of the obtained complex {Mo72Fe30}@TC12.5 was examined. The experimental results allowed us to note the partial inhibition of TC’s antibacterial activity owing to the coordination of TC to FeIII centers, in turn, which hinders the participation of TC in coordination via Mg2+ of ribosomal subunits 30S in bacteria.

Supramolecular hybrids of chiral Waugh polyoxometalate with cyclodextrins

The development of novel systems for chiral polyoxometalates (POMs) is an attractive research field because of their fascinating topological structures and well-defined functions. Herein, we have developed a new reaction route for the synthesis of two unprecedented chiral Waugh POM-based supramolecular architectures. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the architectures exhibit a wavy three-dimensional framework and bamboo-rod-connected framework upon regulating the size of the cyclodextrin and the stacking pattern of the D₃ symmetric Waugh {MnMo₉}. Solution studies using NMR, circular dichroism and isothermal titration calorimetry corroborate nicely the very weak interactions between the components. The intricate chiral microenvironment originating from the hybrid frameworks may be responsible for the selective recognition of the Λ-{MnMo₉} enantiomer. This study highlights the importance of the asymmetric configuration of the POM for designing CD/POM assemblies and understanding their chirality.

A review on functional nanoarchitectonics nanocomposites based on octahedral metal atom clusters (Nb6, Mo6, Ta6, W6, Re6): inorganic 0D and 2D powders and films

This review is dedicated to various functional nanoarchitectonic nanocomposites based on molecular octahedral metal atom clusters (Nb₆, Mo₆, Ta₆, W₆, Re₆). Powder and film nanocomposites with two-dimensional, one-dimensional and zero-dimensional morphologies are presented, as well as film matrices from organic polymers to inorganic layered oxides. The high potential and synergetic effects of these nanocomposites for biotechnology applications, photovoltaic, solar control, catalytic, photonic and sensor applications are demonstrated. This review also provides a basic level of understanding how nanocomposites are characterized and processed using different techniques and methods. The main objective of this review would be to provide guiding significance for the design of new high-performance nanocomposites based on transition metal atom clusters.

Tuning the Ground- and Excited-State Redox Potentials of Octahedral Hexanuclear Rhenium(III) Complexes by the Combination of Terminal Halide and N-Heteroaromatic Ligands

The present study reports that the ground- and excited-state Re₆(23e)/Re₆(24e) redox potentials of an octahedral hexanuclear rhenium(III) complex can be controlled by systematically changing the number and type of the N-heteroaromatic ligand (L) and the number of chloride ions at the six terminal positions. Photoirradiation of [Re₆(μ₃-S)₈Cl₆]^4- with an excess amount of L afforded a mono-L-substituted hexanuclear rhenium(III) complex, [Re₆(μ₃-S)₈Cl₅(L)]^3- (L = 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap), 3,5-lutidine (lut), 4-methylpyridine (mpy), pyridine (py), 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), 4-cyanopyridine (cpy), and pyrazine (pz)). The bis- and tris-lut-substituted complexes, trans- and cis-[Re₆(μ₃-S)₈Cl₄(lut)₂]^2- and mer-[Re₆(μ₃-S)₈Cl₃(lut)₃]^-, were synthesized by the reaction of [Re₆(μ₃-S)₈Cl₆]^3- with an excess amount of lut in refluxed N,N-dimethylformamide. The mono-L-substituted complexes showed one-electron redox processes assignable to E _1/2[Re₆(23e)/Re₆(24e)] = 0.49-0.58 V versus Ag/AgCl. The ground-state oxidation potentials were linearly correlated with the pK _a of the N-heteroaromatic ligand [pK _a(L)], the ¹H NMR chemical shift of the ortho proton on the coordinating ligand, and the Hammett constant (σ) of the pyridyl-ligand substituent. The series of [Re₆(μ₃-S)₈X_6-n (L) _n ] ^n-4 complexes (n = 0, X = Cl, Br, I, or NCS; n = 1-3, X = Cl) showed a linear correlation with the sum of the Lever electrochemical parameters at the six terminal ligands (ΣE _L). The cyclic voltammograms of the mono-L-substituted complexes (L = bpy, cpy, and pz) showed one-electron redox waves assignable to E _1/2(L⁰/L^-) = -1.28 to -1.48 V versus Ag/AgCl. Two types of photoluminescences were observed for the complexes, originating from the cluster core-centered excited triplet state (³CC) for L = dmap, lut, mpy, and py and from the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited triplet state (³MLCT) for L = bpy, cpy, and pz. The complexes with the ³CC character exhibited emission features and photophysical properties similar to those of ordinary hexanuclear rhenium complexes. The emission maximum wavelength of the complexes with ³MLCT shifted to the longer wavelength in the order L = 4-phenylpyridine (ppy), bpy, pz, and cpy, which agreed with the difference between E _1/2[Re₆(23e)/Re₆(24e)] and E _1/2(L⁰/L^-). The calculated oxidation potential of the excited hexanuclear rhenium complex with the ³CC character was linearly correlated with pK _a(L), σ, and ΣE _L. The ground- and excited-state oxidation potentials were finely tuned by the combination of halide and L ligands at the terminal positions.

Chaotropic Effect as an Assembly Motif to Construct Supramolecular Cyclodextrin-Polyoxometalate-Based Frameworks

In aqueous solution, low-charged polyoxometalates (POMs) exhibit remarkable self-assembly properties with nonionic organic matter that have been recently used to develop groundbreaking advances in host-guest chemistry, as well as in soft matter science. Herein, we exploit the affinity between a chaotropic POM and native cyclodextrins (α-, β-, and γ-CD) to enhance the structural and functional diversity of cyclodextrin-based open frameworks. First, we reveal that the Anderson-Evans type polyoxometalate [AlMo₆O₁₈(OH)₆]^3- represents an efficient inorganic scaffold to design open hybrid frameworks built from infinite cyclodextrin channels connected through the disk-shaped POM. A single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrates that the resulting supramolecular architectures contain large cavities (up to 2 nm) where the topologies are dictated by the rotational symmetry of the organic macrocycle, generating honeycomb (bnn net) and checkerboard-like (pcu net) networks for α-CD (C₆) and γ-CD (C₈), respectively. On the other hand, the use of β-CD, a macrocycle with C₇ ideal symmetry, led to a distorted-checkerboard-like network. The cyclodextrin-based frameworks built from an Anderson-Evans type POM are easily functionalizable using the molecular recognition properties of the macrocycle building units. As a proof of concept, we successfully isolated a series of compartmentalized functional frameworks by the entrapment of polyiodides or superchaotropic redox-active polyanions within the macrocyclic host matrix. This set of results paves the way for designing multifunctional supramolecular frameworks whose pore dimensions are controlled by the size of inorganic entities.

Host-Guest Complexation Between Cyclodextrins and Hybrid Hexavanadates: What are the Driving Forces?

Host-guest complexes between native cyclodextrins (α-, β- and γ-CD) and hybrid Lindqvist-type polyoxovanadates (POVs) [V₆ O₁₃ ((OCH₂ )₃ C-R)₂ ]^2- with R = CH₂ CH₃ , NO₂ , CH₂ OH and NH(BOC) (BOC = N-tert-butoxycarbonyl) were studied in aqueous solution. Six crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the nature of the functional R group strongly influences the host-guest conformation and also the crystal packing. In all systems isolated in the solid-state, the organic groups R are embedded within the cyclodextrin cavities, involving only a few weak supramolecular contacts. The interaction between hybrid POVs and the macrocyclic organic hosts have been deeply studied in solution using ITC, cyclic voltammetry and NMR methods (1D ¹ H NMR, and 2D DOSY, and ROESY). This set of complementary techniques provides clear insights about the strength of interactions and the binding host-guest modes occurring in aqueous solution, highlighting a dramatic influence of the functional group R on the supramolecular properties of the hexavanadate polyoxoanions (association constant K_1:1 vary from 0 to 2 000 M^-1 ) while isolated functional organic groups exhibit only very weak intrinsic affinity with CDs. Electrochemical and calorimetric investigations suggest that the driving force of the host-guest association involving larger CDs (β- and γ-CD) is mainly related to the chaotropic effect. In contrast, the hydrophobic effect supported by weak attractive forces appears as the main contributor for the formation of α-CD-containing host-guest complexes. In any cases, the origin of driving forces is clearly related to the ability of the macrocyclic host to desolvate the exposed moieties of the hybrid POVs.

Self-induced synthesis under neutral conditions and novel visible light photocatalytic activity of Ag4V2O7 polyoxometalate

Ag₄V₂O₇ POM with a nanorod-bundle structure was designed under neutral conditions, which showed good visible photodegradation performance against chloramphenicol.
