A Primary Amide-Functionalized Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Coumarin-3-carboxylic Acids via a Tandem Reaction

Two pillared-layer metal-organic frameworks based on the pinwheel trinuclear carboxylate-clusters of Zn(II) and Co(II): synthesis, crystal structures, magnetic study, and Lewis acid catalysis

Using a dicarboxylic acid, [1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (H₂L1) and an exobidentate ligand, (1E,1'E)-N,N'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(1-(pyridin-4-yl)methanimine) (L2), two 3D interpenetrated networks, {[Zn₃(L1)₃(L2)]·9H₂O}_n (Zn-MOF) and {[Co₃(L1)₃(L2)(DMF)]·0.5DMF}_n (Co-MOF), have been prepared in good yields. The crystal structure analysis of Zn-MOF and Co-MOF revealed that both have a 3D pillared-layer structure based on pinwheel trinuclear metal-carboxylate clusters as secondary building units (SBUs). Furthermore, the structures also exhibited three-fold interpenetration. Although the overall networks in Zn-MOF and Co-MOF showed significant resemblances, there are marked differences in their crystal structures, which are associated with the coordination environment of the metal centre and the binding modes of the carboxylates. Gas adsorption studies (N₂ at 77 K and 1 bar) indicated that Co-MOF is more porous than Zn-MOF. Magnetic measurements on Co-MOF indicate a significant antiferromagnetic interaction (45 K to 303 K) between trimeric Co(II) S = 3/2 spins through syn-syn carboxylato bridges. Both MOFs were studied for the Lewis acid catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation reactions between benzaldehydes and malononitrile with an active methylene group, where Zn-MOF was found to be a better catalyst than Co-MOF. This was supported by the Monte Carlo simulations indicating the better substrate binding ability of Zn-MOF than Co-MOF.

Two Zn(II)/Cd(II) Coordination Polymers as Recyclable Heterogeneous Catalysts for an Efficient Room-Temperature Synthesis of α-Aminonitriles via the Solvent-Free Strecker Reaction

The α-aminonitriles are versatile building blocks in the synthesis of natural or artificial amino acids as well as important intermediates in organic synthesis. For their synthesis, the three-component Strecker reaction involving an aldehyde or a ketone together with amines and trimethylsilyl cyanide is used. In the literature, hydrothermally produced metal-based heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysts have been utilized in various solvents. In this work, we aimed at a greener approach toward such catalysis by (a) making two precatalysts with d¹⁰ metal centers, {[Zn(hipamifba)(H₂O)]·2H₂O}_n (1) and {[Cd(hipamifba)(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O}_n (2) (where H₂hipamifba = 4-(((4-((carboxymethyl) carbamoyl)phenyl)amino)methyl)benzoic acid), via an easy and scalable room-temperature method, and (b) showcasing the use of these coordination polymers (CPs) as very efficient, recyclable, and heterogeneous catalysts for the Strecker reaction to form α-aminonitriles in high yields under solvent-free reaction at ambient conditions. This has also allowed us to demonstrate the importance of open metal sites in such catalysis through an efficiency comparison between activated 1 and 2. In addition, activated 2 exhibited a wide substrate scope including a natural product Girgensohnine, providing an example of a natural product synthesis by a CP catalyst via an organic transformation such as the Strecker reaction.

Continuous Flow Biocatalysis: Synthesis of Coumarin Carboxamide Derivatives by Lipase TL IM from Thermomyces lanuginosus

Coumarin carboxamide derivatives are important building blocks for organic synthesis and chemical biology due to their excellent biopharmaceutical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time a two-step enzymatic synthesis of coumarin carboxamide derivatives. Salicylaldehyde and dimethyl malonate were reacted to obtain coumarin carboxylate methyl derivatives, which were then reacted with various amines under the catalysis of lipase TL IM from Thermomyces lanuginosus to obtain coumarin carboxamide derivatives in continuous flow reactors. We studied various reaction parameters on the yields. The important features of this method include mild reaction conditions, a short reaction time (40 min), reduced environmental pollution, higher productivity (STY = 31.2941 g L−1 h−1) and enzymes being relatively easy to obtain.

3-Carboxylic Acid and Formyl-Derived Coumarins as Photoinitiators in Photo-Oxidation or Photo-Reduction Processes for Photopolymerization upon Visible Light: Photocomposite Synthesis and 3D Printing Applications

In this paper, nine organic compounds based on the coumarin scaffold and different substituents were synthesized and used as high-performance photoinitiators for free radical photopolymerization (FRP) of meth(acrylate) functions under visible light irradiation using LED at 405 nm. In fact, these compounds showed a very high initiation capacity and very good polymerization profiles (both high rate of polymerization (Rp) and final conversion (FC)) using two and three-component photoinitiating systems based on coum/iodonium salt (0.1%/1% w/w) and coum/iodonium salt/amine (0.1%/1%/1% w/w/w), respectively. To demonstrate the efficiency of the initiation of photopolymerization, several techniques were used to study the photophysical and photochemical properties of coumarins, such as: UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, steady-state photolysis, real-time FTIR, and cyclic voltammetry. On the other hand, these compounds were also tested in direct laser write experiments (3D printing). The synthesis of photocomposites based on glass fiber or carbon fiber using an LED conveyor at 385 nm (0.7 W/cm²) was also examined.

Deciphering supramolecular isomerization in coordination polymers: connected molecular squares vs. fused hexagons

The self-assembly of Mn(ii), bis(tridentate) ligands and bent dicarboxylate linkers under ambient conditions has been exploited to generate a series of 1D coordination polymers in good yields. For a set of seven compounds, structural isomerization of these architectures is demonstrated through the variation of length and nature of the spacer between the tridentate capping sites of the bis(tridentate) ligands, such as tpbn (N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4-diaminobutane), tphxn (N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,6-diaminohexane), and tpxn (N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-xylylamine) or by varying the bent dicarboxylate linker 4,4'-(dimethylsilanediyl)bis-benzoic acid (H2L1) or 4,4'-oxybis-benzoic acid (H2L2). These compounds have been structurally characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. This study reveals that the supramolecular structural variation can be precisely controlled either by a judicious selection of reaction conditions or linker/ligand combinations. For example, the self-assembly of Mn(ii), tpbn and H2L1 in DMF/EtOH/water affords a mixture of products (1 and 1a) while changing the solvent combination to EtOH/water results in the generation of a single isomer (1a) in a highly selective manner. On the other hand, for the Mn(ii)-tphxn system, different structural isomers have been isolated by varying the dicarboxylates, H2L1 and H2L2 (2vs.5). Similarly, for the Mn(ii)-H2L2 system, a variation in the spacer chain length of bis(tridentate) ligands, tpbn and tphxn resulted in the formation of different structural isomers (4vs.5).
