Relativistic Multiconfigurational Ab Initio Calculation of Uranyl 3d4f Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

U(V) Stabilization via Aliovalent Incorporation of Ln(III) into Oxo-salt Framework

Pentavalent uranium compounds are key components of uranium's redox chemistry and play important roles in environmental transport. Despite this, well-characterized U(V) compounds are scarce primarily because of their instability with respect to disproportionation to U(IV) and U(VI). In this work, we provide an alternate route to incorporation of U(V) into a crystalline lattice where different oxidation states of uranium can be stabilized through the incorporation of secondary cations with different sizes and charges. We show that iriginite-based crystalline layers allow for systematically replacing U(VI) with U(V) through aliovalent substitution of 2+ alkaline-earth or 3+ rare-earth cations as dopant ions under high-temperature conditions, specifically Ca(UVIO2)W4O14 and Ln(UVO2)W4O14 (Ln=Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Yb). Evidence for the existence of U(V) and U(VI) is supported by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, high energy resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and optical absorption spectroscopy. In contrast with other reported U(V) materials, the U(V) single crystals obtained using this route are relatively large (several centimeters) and easily reproducible, and thus provide a substantial improvement in the facile synthesis and stabilization of U(V).

Unveiling Hidden Shake-Up Features in the Uranyl M4-Edge Spectrum

The M4,5-edge high energy resolution X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HR-XANES) spectra of actinyls offer valuable insights into the electronic structure and bonding properties of heavy-element complexes. To conduct a comprehensive spectral analysis, it is essential to employ computational methods that accurately account for relativistic effects and electron correlation. In this work, we utilize variational relativistic multireference configurational interaction methods to compute and analyze the X-ray M4-edge absorption spectrum of uranyl. By employing these advanced computational techniques, we achieve excellent agreement between the calculated spectral features and experimental observations. Moreover, the calculations unveil significant shake-up features, which arise from the intricate interplay between strongly correlated 3d core-electron and ligand excitations. This research provides important theoretical insights into the spectral characteristics of heavy-element complexes. Furthermore, it establishes the foundation for utilizing M4,5-edge spectroscopy as a means to investigate the chemical activities of such complexes. By leveraging this technique, we can gain a deeper understanding of the bonding behavior and reactivity of heavy-element compounds.

Electronic Structure of Actinyls: Orbital Properties

A detailed analysis is presented for the covalent character of the orbitals in the actinyls: UO22+, NpO22+, and PuO22+. Both the initial, or ground state, GS, configuration and the excited configurations where a 3d electron is excited into the open valence, nominally the 5f shell, are considered. The orbitals are determined as fully relativistic, four component Dirac-Coulomb Hartree-Fock solutions. Several measures, which go beyond the commonly used population analyses, are used to characterize the covalent character of an orbital in order to obtain reliable estimates of the covalency. Although there are differences in the covalent character of the orbitals for the initial and excited configurations of the different actinyls, there is a surprising similarity in the covalent character for all of the states considered. This is true both between the initial and excited configurations as well as between the different actinyls. The analysis emphasizes the 5f covalent character in the closed shell bonding orbitals and the open shell antibonding orbitals since the focus is on characterizing orbitals needed in a many-body treatment of the actinyl wave functions. However, estimates are also made of the participation of the actinide 6d in the covalent bonding.

Bounding [AnO2]2+ (An = U, Np) covalency by simulated O K-edge and An M-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy

Restricted active space simulations are shown to accurately reproduce and characterise both O K-edge and U M4,5-edge spectra of uranyl in excellent agreement with experimental peak positions and are extended to the Np analogue. Analysis of bonding orbital composition in the ground and O K-edge core-excited states demonstrates that metal contribution is underestimated in the latter. In contrast, An M4/5-edge core-excited states produce bonding orbital compositions significantly more representative of those in the ground state. Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules analysis is employed to explain the discrepancy between K- and M-edge data and demonstrates that the location of the core-hole impacts the pattern of electron localisation in core-excited states. An apparent contradiction to this behaviour in neptunyl is rationalised in terms interelectronic repulsion between the unpaired 5f electron and the excited core-electron.

Core Excitations of Uranyl in Cs2UO2Cl4 from Relativistic Embedded Damped Response Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Calculations

X-ray spectroscopies, by their high selectivity and sensitivity to the chemical environment around the atoms probed, provide significant insights into the electronic structures of molecules and materials. Interpreting experimental results requires reliable theoretical models, accounting for environmental, relativistic, electron correlation, and orbital relaxation effects in a balanced manner. In this work, we present a protocol for the simulation of core excited spectra with damped response time-dependent density functional theory based on the Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian (4c-DR-TD-DFT), in which environmental effects are accounted for through the frozen density embedding (FDE) method. We showcase this approach for the uranium M4- and L3-edges and oxygen K-edge of the uranyl tetrachloride (UO2Cl42-) unit as found in a host Cs2UO2Cl4 crystal. We have found that the 4c-DR-TD-DFT simulations yield excitation spectra that very closely match the experiment for the uranium M4-edge and the oxygen K-edge, with good agreement for the broad experimental spectra for the L3-edge. By decomposing the complex polarizability in terms of its components, we have been able to correlate our results with angle-resolved spectra. We have observed that for all edges, but in particular the uranium M4-edge, an embedded model in which the chloride ligands are replaced by an embedding potential reproduces rather well the spectral profile obtained for UO2Cl42-. Our results underscore the importance of the equatorial ligands to simulating core spectra at both uranium and oxygen edges.

Reaction of Pertechnetate in Highly Alkaline Solution: Synthesis and Characterization of the Nitridotrioxotechnetate Ba[TcO3 N]

The preparation of novel technetium oxides, their characterization and the general investigation of technetium chemistry are of significant importance, since fundamental research has so far mainly focused on the group homologues. Whereas the structure chemistry of technetium in strongly oxidizing media is dominated by the Tc O 4 - ${{\left[{\rm { Tc}}{{\rm { O}}}_{{\rm { 4}}}\right]}^{-}}$ anion, our recent investigation yielded the new Tc O 3 N 2 - ${{\left[{\rm { Tc}}{{\rm { O}}}_{{\rm { 3}}}{\rm { N}}\right]}^{{\rm { 2}}-}}$ anion. Brown single crystals of Ba[TcO₃ N] were obtained under hydrothermal conditions starting from Ba(OH)₂  ⋅ 8H₂ O and NH₄ [TcO₄ ] at 200 °C. Ba [ Tc O 3 N ] ${{\rm { Ba[Tc}}{{\rm { O}}}_{{\rm { 3}}}{\rm { N]}}}$ crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system with the space group P2₁ /n (a=7.2159(4) Å, b=7.8536(5) Å, c=7.4931(4) Å and β=104.279(2)°). The crystal structure of Ba [ Tc O 3 N ] ${{\rm { Ba[Tc}}{{\rm { O}}}_{{\rm { 3}}}{\rm { N]}}}$ consists of isolated Tc O 3 N 2 - ${{\left[{\rm { Tc}}{{\rm { O}}}_{{\rm { 3}}}{\rm { N}}\right]}^{{\rm { 2}}-}}$ tetrahedra, which are surrounded by Ba²⁺ cations. XANES measurements complement the oxidation state +VII for technetium and Raman spectroscopic experiments on Ba[TcO₃ N] single crystals exhibit characteristic Tc-O and Tc-N vibrational modes.

The mechanism of Fe induced bond stability of uranyl(v)

The stabilization of uranyl(v) (UO₂ ^{1 +} ) by Fe(ii) in natural systems remains an open question in uranium chemistry. Stabilization of U^VO₂ ¹⁺ by Fe(ii) against disproportionation was also demonstrated in molecular complexes. However, the relation between the Fe(ii) induced stability and the change of the bonding properties have not been elucidated up to date. We demonstrate that U(v) - oaxial bond covalency decreases upon binding to Fe(ii) inducing redirection of electron density from the U(v) - oaxial bond towards the U(v) - equatorial bonds thereby increasing bond covalency. Our results indicate that such increased covalent interaction of U(v) with the equatorial ligands resulting from iron binding lead to higher stability of uranyl(v). For the first time a combination of U M_4,5 high energy resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure (HR-XANES) and valence band resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (VB-RIXS) and ab initio multireference CASSCF and DFT based computations were applied to establish the electronic structure of iron-bound uranyl(v).

X-ray absorption spectra of f-element complexes: insight from relativistic multiconfigurational wavefunction theory

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, coupled with ab initio calculations, has emerged as the state-of-the-art tool for elucidating the metal-ligand bonding in f-element complexes. This highlight presents recent efforts in calculating XANES spectra of lanthanide and actinide compounds with relativistic multiconfiguration wavefunction approaches that account for differences in donation bonding in the ground state (GS) versus a core-excited state (ES), multiplet effects, and spin-orbit-coupling. With the GS and ES wavefunctions available, including spin-orbit effects, an arsenal of chemical bonding tools that are popular among chemists can be applied to rationalize the observed intensities in terms of covalent bonding.
