Insights into the Degradation Mechanisms of TCH by Magnetic Fe3S4/Cu2O Composite

Zirconium and cerium dioxide fabricated activated carbon-based nanocomposites for enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic removal of methylene blue and tetracycline hydrochloride

Activated carbon (AC) is a porous, amorphous form of carbon known for its strong adsorption capacity, making it highly effective for use in wastewater treatment. In this investigation, AC-based nanocomposites (NCs) loaded with zirconium dioxide and cerium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2/CeO2 NPs) were successfully synthesized for the effective elimination of methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The AC-ZrO2/CeO2 NCs have a size of 231.83 nm, a zeta potential of -20.07 mV, and a PDI value of 0.160. The adsorption capacities of AC-ZrO2/CeO2 NCs for MB and TCH were proved in agreement with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo 1st order kinetic model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities were determined to be 75.54 mg/g for MB and 26.75 mg/g for TCH. Notably, AC-ZrO2/CeO2 NCs exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation efficiency for MB and TCH under sunlight irradiation with removal efficiencies reaching up to 97.91% and 82.40% within 90 min, respectively. The t1/2 for the photo-degradation process of MB and TCH were 11.55 min and 44.37 min. Analysis of active species trapping confirmed the involvement of hole (h+), superoxide anion (•O2-), and hydroxyl radical (•OH) in the degradation mechanism. Furthermore, the residual solution post-contaminant removal exhibited minimal toxicity towards Artemia salina and NIH3T3 cells. Importantly, the NCs did not exhibit antibacterial activity against tested pathogens post-absorption/degradation of TCH. Thus, AC-ZrO2/CeO2 NCs could be a promising nanomaterial for wastewater treatment applications.

The Z-Scheme MIL-88B(Fe)/BiOBr Heterojunction Promotes Fe(III)/Fe(II) Cycling and Photocatalytic-Fenton-Like Synergistically Enhances the Degradation of Ciprofloxacin

The Z-scheme MIL-88B/BiOBr (referred to as MxBy, whereas x and y are the mass of MIL-88B(Fe) and BiOBr) heterojunction photocatalysts are successfully prepared by a facile ball milling method. By adding low concentration H2O2 under visible light irradiation, the Z-scheme heterojunction and photocatalytic-Fenton-like reaction synergistically enhance the degradation and mineralization of ciprofloxacin (CIP). Among them, M50B150 showed efficient photodegradation efficiency and excellent cycling stability, with 94.6% removal of CIP (10 mg L-1) by M50B150 (0.2 g L-1) under 90 min of visible light. In the MxBy heterojunctions, the rapid transfer of photo-generated electrons not only directly decomposed H2O2 to generate ·OH, but also improved the cycle of Fe3+/Fe2+ pairs, which facilitated the reaction with H2O2 to generate ·OH and ·O2 - radicals. In addition, the effects of photocatalyst dosages, pH of CIP solution, and coexisting substances on CIP removal are systematically investigated. It is found that the photocatalytic- Fenton-like reaction can be carried out at a pH close to neutral conditions. Finally, the charge transfer mechanism of the Z-scheme is verified by electron spin resonance (ESR) signals. The ecotoxicity of CIP degradation products is estimated by the T.E.S.T tool, indicating that the constructed photocatalysis-Fenton-like system is a green wastewater treatment technology.

Integration of Myrica rubra-based N-doped carbon dots with Fe3S4 as excellent peroxidase mimics for colorimetric assay and smartphone-based intelligent sensing of p-aminophenol in waters

To realize the reutilization of waste Myrica rubra in the analytical field, we synthesized Myrica rubra-based N-doped carbon dots (MN-CDs) and further anchored them onto the surface of Fe3S4 to fabricate Fe3S4@MN-CD nanocomposites. The as-fabricated nanocomposites possessed higher peroxidase-mimetic activity than its two precursors, resulting from the synergistic effect between them, and could catalyze colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into deep blue oxTMB with a strong 652-nm absorption. Under optimized conditions (initial solution pH, 3.5; incubation temperature, 35 ℃; Fe3S4@MN-CD concentration, 50 µg mL-1, and 652-nm absorption), Fe3S4@MN-CDs were employed for colorimetric assay of p-aminophenol (p-AP) with wide linear range (LR, 2.9-100 µM), low detection limit (LOD, 0.87 µM), and satisfactory recoveries (86.3-105%) in environmental waters. Encouragingly, this colorimetric assay provided the relative accuracy of 97.0-99.4% as compared with  conventional HPLC-UV detection. A portable smartphone-based colorimetric application was developed by combining the Fe3S4@MN-CD-based visually chromogenic reaction with a "Thing Identify" APP software. Besides, we engineered an image-capturing device feasible for field use, in which the internal-compact sealing prevented external light source from entering photography chamber, thereby reducing light interference, and also the bottom light source enhanced the intensity of blue imaging. This colorimetric platform exhibited satisfactory LR (1-500 µM), low LOD (0.3 µM), and fortification recoveries (86.6-99.6%). In the chromogenic reaction catalyzed by Fe3S4@MN-CDs, ·O2- played a key role in concomitant with the participation of •OH and h+. Both the colorimetric assay and smartphone-based intelligent sensing show great promising in on-site monitoring of p-AP under field conditions.
