Homoleptic Iron(II) Complexes with the Ionogenic Ligand 6,6′-Bis(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2′-bipyridine: Spin Crossover Behavior in a Singular 2D Spin Crossover Coordination Polymer

Trapping an unprecedented octacoordinated iron(II) complex with neutral bis-tetrazolylpyridyl ligands and solvent molecules

Iron(II) can show a very rich coordination chemistry with concomitant modulation of its properties as promising functional materials. Metalation of the neutral tridentate nitrogen-donor mer-coordinating ligand 2,6-bis(2-(methyl)-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (Me2btp) with Fe(ClO4)2·6H2O through accurate solvent polarity control enables the selective crystallization of [FeHS/LS(Me2btp)2](ClO4)2·MeCN·2.75H2O (2HS/LS·MeCN·2.75H2O) as red rods, where half of the iron(II) centres resides in the low spin (LS, S = 0) state and the other half is in the high spin (HS, S = 2) state. The red rods spontaneously convert into yellow crystals once removed from the mother liquor and exposed to air due to solvent rearrangement within the crystal packing; these new crystals can be assigned to [FeHS(Me2btp)2](ClO4)2·solvent (2HS·solvent) where all the iron(II) centres are now blocked in the HS state, as confirmed by magnetic measurements. The polarity of the crystallization solvent, together with the maintenance of the crystals within the mother liquor, are pivotal for the reactivity and interconversion of different species. Indeed, upon long standing in solution, 2HS/LS·MeCN·2.75H2O converts to another form of red crystals belonging to [FeLS(Me2btp)2][FeHS(Me2btp)(MeCN)2(H2O)](ClO4)4·MeCN (2LS·3HS·MeCN), as confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction data. In this co-crystal, the iron(II) in 2 resides in the LS state at all temperatures while the iron(II) in 3 is blocked in the HS state. Well-formed yellow crystals could be also isolated among the red crystals of 2HS/LS·MeCN·2.75H2O, and they could be identified as the unprecedented octacoordinated species [Fe(Me2btp)2(MeCN)(H2O)](ClO4)2·H2O (1·H2O) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These yellow crystals are stable in the air, but slowly convert into 2LS·3HS·MeCN if kept in the mother liquor for about one week. 1·H2O can be considered the trapped intermediate in the solid state during the conversion of [FeHS(Me2btp)2]2+ into [FeHS(Me2btp)(MeCN)2(H2O)]2+ in solution, where the two tridentate ligands in the starting species can unfold to accommodate coordinated MeCN and H2O molecules, as confirmed by theoretical calculations, and eventually one of the two Me2btp is completely replaced by the solvent.

Crystal structure of polymeric bis-(3-amino-1H-pyrazole)-cadmium dibromide

The reaction of cadmium bromide tetra-hydrate with 3-amino-pyrazole (3-apz) in ethano-lic solution leads to tautomerization of the ligand and the formation of crystals of the title compound, catena-poly[[di-bromido-cadmium(II)]-bis-(μ-3-amino-1H-pyrazole)-κ2 N 3:N 2;κ2 N 2:N 3], [CdBr2(C3H5N3)2]n or [CdBr2(3-apz)2]n. Its asymmetric unit consists of a half of a Cd2+ cation, a bromide anion and a 3-apz mol-ecule. The Cd2+ cations are coordinated by two bromide anions and two 3-apz ligands, generating trans-CdN4Br2 octa-hedra, which are linked into chains by pairs of the bridging ligands. In the crystal, the ligand mol-ecules and bromide anions of neighboring chains are linked through inter-chain hydrogen bonds into a two-dimensional network. The inter-molecular contacts were qu-anti-fied using Hirshfeld surface analysis and two-dimensional fingerprint plots, revealing the relative qu-anti-tative contributions of the weak inter-molecular contacts.

Synthesis and Magnetic Studies of Two Neutral, Bis-Ligand Fe(II) Complexes Containing Carbazole-Bis(tetrazole) Ligands

Previously reported carbazole-bis(tetrazole) (CzT^R) ligands (where R = iPr and CH₂-2,4,6-C₆H₂Me₃) were used to synthesize air-stable, six-coordinate, octahedral bis-ligand Fe(II) complexes (CzT^R)₂Fe. The synthesis and characterization of these complexes using ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray crystallography, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are reported. Analysis of the magnetic properties revealed that the isopropyl derivative displays thermally induced spin crossover (SCO) over a temperature range of 150-350 K. This transition appears as an abrupt two-step transition in the solid state but simplifies to a smooth one-step transition in solution. The two-step transition in the solid state has been postulated to be due to lattice and solvation effects. In contrast, the slightly bulkier substituted CH₂-2,4,6-C₆H₂Me₃ (CH₂Mes) Fe complex displays dramatically different magnetic behavior with no SCO and magnetic data suggesting low-spin Fe(II) with a possible TIP contribution. DFT calculations support the postulate that the change in magnetic behavior is primarily due to the nature of the ligand substituents.

105 K Wide Room Temperature Spin Transition Memory Due to a Supramolecular Latch Mechanism

Little is known about the mechanisms behind the bistability (memory) of molecular spin transition compounds over broad temperature ranges (>100 K). To address this point, we report on a new discrete Fe^II neutral complex [Fe^IIL₂]⁰ (1) based on a novel asymmetric tridentate ligand 2-(5-(3-methoxy-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)-6-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl))pyridine (L). Due to the asymmetric cone-shaped form, in the lattice, the formed complex molecules stack into a one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular chain. In the case of the rectangular supramolecular arrangement of chains in methanolates 1-A and 1-B (both orthorhombic, Pbcn) differing, respectively, by bent and extended spatial conformations of the 3-methoxy groups (3MeO), a moderate cooperativity is observed. In contrast, the hexagonal-like arrangement of supramolecular chains in polymorph 1-C (monoclinic, P2₁/c) results in steric coupling of the transforming complex species with the peripheral flipping 3MeO group. The group acts as a supramolecular latch, locking the huge geometric distortion of complex 1 and in turn the trigonal distortion of the central Fe^II ion in the high-spin state, thereby keeping it from the transition to the low-spin state over a large thermal range. Analysis of the crystal packing of 1-C reveals significantly changing patterns of close intermolecular interactions on going between the phases substantiated by the energy framework analysis. The detected supramolecular mechanism leads to a record-setting robust 105 K wide hysteresis spanning the room temperature region and an atypically large T_LIESST relaxation value of 104 K of the photoexcited high-spin state. This work highlights a viable pathway toward a new generation of cleverly designed molecular memory materials.

Insights into the Observed trans-Bond Length Variations upon NO Binding to Ferric and Ferrous Porphyrins with Neutral Axial Ligands

NO is well-known for its trans effect. NO binding to ferrous hemes of the form (por)Fe(L) (L = neutral N-based ligand) to give the {FeNO}7 (por)Fe(NO)(L) product results in a lengthening of the axial trans Fe-L bond. In contrast, NO binding to the ferric center in [(por)Fe(L)]+ to give the {FeNO}6 [(por)Fe(NO)(L)]+ product results in a shortening of the trans Fe-L bond. NO binding to both ferrous and ferric centers involves the lowering of their spin states. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to probe the experimentally observed trans-bond shortening in some NO adducts of ferric porphyrins. We show that the strong σ antibonding interaction of d z 2 and the axial (L) ligand p orbitals present in the Fe(II) systems is absent in the Fe(III) systems, as it is now in an unoccupied orbital. This feature, combined with a lowering of spin state upon NO binding, provides a rationale for the observed net trans-bond shortening in the {FeNO}6 but not the {FeNO}7 derivatives.

Crystal structure of (N 1,N 3-bis-{[1-(4-meth-oxy-benz-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]methyl-idene}-2,2-di-meth-yl-propane-1,3-di-amine)-bis-(thio-cyanato)-iron(II)

The unit cell of the title compound, [FeII(NCS)2(C29H32N8O2)], consists of eight charge-neutral complex mol-ecules. In the complex mol-ecule, the tetra-dentate ligand N 1,N 3-bis-{[1-(4-meth-oxy-benz-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]methyl-ene}-2,2-di-methyl-propane-1,3-di-amine coordinates to the FeII ion through the N atoms of the 1,2,3-triazole and aldimine groups. Two thio-cyanate anions, coordinated through their N atoms, complete the coordination sphere of the central Fe ion. In the crystal, neighbouring mol-ecules are linked through weak C⋯C, C⋯N and C⋯S inter-actions into a one-dimensional chain running parallel to [010]. The inter-molecular contacts were qu-anti-fied using Hirshfeld surface analysis and two-dimensional fingerprint plots, revealing the relative contributions of the contacts to the crystal packing to be H⋯H (37.5%), H⋯C/C⋯H (24.7%), H⋯S/S⋯H (15.7%) and H⋯N/N⋯H (11.7%). The average Fe-N bond distance is 2.167 Å, indicating the high-spin state of the FeII ion, which does not change upon cooling, as demonstrated by low-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Crystal structure of {N 1,N 3-bis-[(1-tert-butyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl-idene]-2,2-di-methyl-propane-1,3-di-amine}-bis-(thio-cyanato)-iron(II)

The unit cell of the title compound, [FeII(NCS)2(C19H32N8)], consists of two charge-neutral complex mol-ecules. In the complex mol-ecule, the tetra-dentate ligand N 1 ,N 3-bis-[(1-tert-butyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl-ene]-2,2-di-methyl-propane-1,3-di-amine coordinates to the FeII ion through the N atoms of the 1,2,3-triazole and aldimine groups. Two thio-cyanate anions, also coordinated through their N atoms, complete the coordination sphere of the central Fe ion. In the crystal, neighbouring mol-ecules are linked through weak C-H⋯C/S/N inter-actions into a three-dimensional network. The inter-mol-ecular contacts were qu-anti-fied using Hirshfeld surface analysis and two-dimensional fingerprint plots, revealing the relative contributions of the contacts to the crystal packing to be H⋯H 50.8%, H⋯C/C⋯H 14.3%, H⋯S/S⋯H 20.5% and H⋯N/N⋯H 12.1%. The average Fe-N bond distance is 2.170 Å, indicating the high-spin state of the FeII ion, which does not change upon cooling, as demonstrated by low-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. DFT calculations of energy frameworks at the B3LYP/6-31 G(d,p) theory level were performed to account for the inter-actions involved in the crystal structure.

Slow magnetic relaxation in structurally similar mononuclear 8-coordinate Fe(II) and Fe(III) compounds

A pair of structurally-similar and stable 8-coordinate high-spin Fe(ii) and Fe(iii) compounds have been obtained. Both compounds exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. The Fe(iii) compound represents the first example of 8-coordinate Fe(iii) single-molecule magnets (SMM).

Crystal structure of {N 1,N 3-bis-[(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl-idene]-2,2-di-methyl-propane-1,3-di-amine}bis-(thio-cyanato-κN)iron(II)

The unit cell of the title compound, [FeII(NCS)2(C25H28N8)], consists of two charge-neutral complex mol-ecules related by an inversion centre. In the complex mol-ecule, the tetra-dentate ligand N 1,N 3-bis-[(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl-ene]-2,2-di-methyl-propane-1,3-di-amine coordinates to the FeII ion through the N atoms of the 1,2,3-triazole moieties and aldimine groups. Two thio-cyanate anions, coordinating through their N atoms, complete the coordination sphere of the central ion. In the crystal, neighbouring mol-ecules are linked through weak C-H⋯π, C-H⋯S and C-H⋯N inter-actions into a two-dimensional network extending parallel to (011). The inter-molecular contacts were qu-anti-fied using Hirshfeld surface analysis and two-dimensional fingerprint plots, revealing the relative contributions of the contacts to the crystal packing to be H⋯H (35.2%), H⋯C/C⋯H (26.4%), H⋯S/S⋯H (19.3%) and H⋯N/N⋯H (13.9%).

A rare octacoordinated mononuclear iron(III) spin-crossover compound: synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties

The chemistry of transition-metal complexes with unusually high coordination numbers has been of interest because of their application in catalytic and biological systems. Deprotonation of the ionogenic tetradentate ligand 6,6′-bis(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2′-bipyridine [H2bipy(ttr)2] in the presence of iron(III) and tetra-n-butylammonium bromide, [n-Bu4N]Br, in solution resulted in the synthesis of a rare octacoordinated anionic mononuclear complex, tetra-n-butylammonium bis[6,6′-bis(tetrazol-1-id-5-yl)-2,2′-bipyridine]iron(III) methanol hemisolvate dihydrate, (C16H36N)[Fe(C12H6N10)2]·0.5CH3OH·2H2O or [n-Bu4N][Fe{bipy(ttr)2}2]·0.5CH3OH·2H2O (1), which has been structurally characterized by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In 1, the coordination sphere of the iron(III) ion is a distorted bis-disphenoid dodecahedron, in which the eight coordination positions are occupied by eight N atoms from two independent tetradentate [bipy(ttr)2]2− anionic ligands, therefore forming the anionic [Fe{bipy(ttr)2}2]− unit, with the negative charge balanced by a free [n-Bu4N]+ cation. An investigation of the magnetic properties of 1 revealed a gradual incomplete spin-crossover behaviour below 150 K.

Variable Cooperative Interactions in the Pressure and Thermally Induced Multistep Spin Transition in a Two-Dimensional Iron(II) Coordination Polymer

Two types of experiments conducted to investigate the effect of pressure on the spin crossover (SCO) properties of the 2D Fe(II) coordination polymer formulated {Fe[bipy(ttr)₂]}_n are reported, namely, (1) magnetic measurements performed at variable temperature and at fixed pressure and (2) visible spectroscopy at variable pressure and fixed temperature. The magnetic experiments carried out under a hydrostatic pressure constraint of 0.04, 0.08, and 0.8 GPa reveal a two-step spin transition behavior. The characteristic critical temperatures of the spin transition are shifted upward in temperature as pressure increases. The slope of the straight-line of the T_c vs P plot, dT_c/dP, is 775 K/GPa and 300 K/GPa, for the high temperature and the low temperature steps, respectively. These values are remarkably large and denote the extreme sensitivity of the material to the application of pressure. Indeed, the visible spectroscopic measurements performed at 293 K show that a complete spin transition is induced at pressures as low as 0.4 GPa. Moreover, the pressure-induced spin transition is reversible and shows an asymmetric hysteresis. An analysis of the cooperative interactions of the thermal- and pressure-induced spin transition in the framework of the model of elastic interactions reveals that the elastic energy of the lattice as well as the interaction parameter between the SCO centers change during the course of the spin transition. Consequently, the character of the spin transition varies from abrupt for the high temperature step to continuous for the low temperature step.

Crystal structure of the mixed methanol and ethanol solvate of bis-{3,4,5-trimeth-oxy-N'-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl-idene]benzohydrazidato}zinc(II)

The unit cell of the title compound, [Zn(C17H18N3O4)2]·CH4O·C2H6O, contains two complex mol-ecules related by an inversion centre, plus one methanol and one ethanol solvent molecule per complex molecule. In each complex, two deprotonated pyridine aroylhydrazone ligands {3,4,5-trimeth-oxy-N'-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl-idene]benzohydrazide} coordinate to the ZnII ion through the N atoms of the pyridine group and the ketamine, and, additionally, through the O atom of the enolate group. In the crystal, dimers are formed by π-π inter-actions between the planar ligand moieties, which are further connected by C⋯O and C⋯C inter-actions. The inter-molecular inter-actions were investigated using Hirshfeld surface analysis and two-dimensional fingerprint plots, revealing that the most important contributions for the crystal packing are from H⋯H (44.8%), H⋯C/C⋯H (22.2%), H⋯O/O⋯H (18.7%) and C⋯C (3.9%) inter-actions.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of bis-[butyl-tris-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)borato]iron(II)

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Fe(C13H18BN6)2], contains two half independent complex mol-ecules. In each complex, the FeII atom is located on an inversion center and is surrounded by two scorpionate ligand butyl-tris-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)borate mol-ecules that coordinate to the iron(II) ion through the N atoms of the pyrazole groups. The two independent complex mol-ecules differ essentially in the conformation of the butyl substituents. In the crystal, the complex mol-ecules are linked by a series of C-H⋯π inter-actions, which generate a supra-molecular three-dimensional structure. At 120 K, the average Fe-N bond distance is 1.969 Å, indicating the low-spin state of the iron(II) atom, which does not change upon heating, as demonstrated by high-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Photo-switched magnetic coupling in spin-crossover complexes

This feature article summarizes the recent progress in the magnetically coupled spin-crossover (SCO) complexes. The photo-switched molecular nanomagnet property, long range magnetic ordering, and the perspectives of SCO complexes are also presented.

Slow spin crossover in bis-meridional Fe2+ complexes through spin-state auto-adaptive N6/N8 coordination

Fe²⁺ spin crossover (SCO) complexes with long-lived excited high-spin (HS) states are promising molecular switches. An enhanced kinetic stability of spin-state isomers can be expected to foster applications beyond the limits of cooperative SCO. In this study, we describe a new approach to slow down the spin-state exchange by simple commutation of a phenyl substituent by a pyridyl substituent. To this end, N4 ligand 6-(3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (3b) is synthesized as an N4 homologue of the well-established meridional N3 ligands motif. Phenyl-substituted 6-(3-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (3a) serves as an intrinsic N3 reference throughout. 3b offers variable coordination numbers, N3 versus N3(+1) and N4, reflecting the preferences of the metal center. As is shown herein through an extended solid-state structure-chemical and solution-state NMR study, which is augmented by density-functional theory modeling, both the coordination geometry and its structural dynamics are indeed highly sensitive towards the expansion of the nominal donor number. The additional donors in 3b introduced through the phenyl-pyridine commutation actually give rise to a rich and diverse stereochemistry of the derived Zn²⁺ and Fe²⁺ complexes. Notably, even within a single complex unit coordination of 3b ranges from strongly distorted N3 coordination with a long assisting additional contact (Zn²⁺ and Fe²⁺) to a more symmetric N2(+2) or N4 situation in Fe²⁺. DFT modeling unravels that the additional donors are hemi-labile and coordinate to the Fe²⁺ only in HS state, leaving the elusive low-spin (LS) state in a fairly undisturbed octahedral environment with 3b being N3 coordinate. That is, the coordination number of the complex autogeneously responds to the altered spin-state. Necessarily this switch in coordination number requires strong structural changes upon SCO. This leads to increased activation barriers for SCO as could be deduced from a temperature-dependent analysis of the dynamic ¹H NMR-line broadening and corroborated by accompanying theoretical analysis of the SCO reaction coordinate. For [Fe(3b)₂]²⁺ long spin-state lifetimes τ > 1 ms prevail below the characteristic temperature T (1 ms) = 235 K; this value should be compared with a lifetime of only 150 ns derived for the close analogue [Fe(3a)₂]²⁺. The principle applied herein is general and allows transferring of LS Fe²⁺ complexes with suitably placed phenyl substituents into SCO complexes with spin-state adaptive coordination number and hence long-lived HS excited states.

Novel triadius-like N4 specie of iron nitride compounds under high pressure

Various nitrogen species in nitrides are fascinating since they often appear with these nitride as superconductors, hard materials, and high-energy density. As a typical complex, though iron nitride has been intensively studied, nitrogen species in the iron-nitrogen (Fe-N) compounds only have been confined to single atom (N) or molecule nitrogen (N2). Using a structure search method based on the CALYPSO methodology, unexpectedly, we here revealed two new stable high pressure (HP) states at 1:2 and 1:4 compositions with striking nitrogen species. The results show that the proposed FeN2 stabilizes by a break up of molecule N2 into a novel planar N4 unit (P63/mcm, >228 GPa) while FeN4 stabilizes by a infinite 1D linear nitrogen chains N∞ (P-1, >50 GPa; Cmmm, >250 GPa). In the intriguing N4 specie of P63/mcm-FeN2, we find that it possesses three equal N = N covalent bonds and forms a perfect triadius-like configuration being never reported before. This uniqueness gives rise to a set of remarkable properties for the crystal phase: it is identified to have a good mechanical property and a potential for phonon-mediated superconductivity with a Tc of 4-8 K. This discovery puts the Fe-N system into a new class of desirable materials combining advanced mechanical properties and superconductivity.

Slow Magnetic Relaxation in a Series of Mononuclear 8-Coordinate Fe(II) and Co(II) Complexes

A series of homoleptic mononuclear 8-coordinate Fe^II and Co^II compounds, [Fe^II(L²)₂](ClO₄)₂ (2), [Fe^II(L³)₂](ClO₄)₂ (3), [Fe^II(L⁴)₂](ClO₄)₂ (4), [Co^II(L¹)₂](ClO₄)₂ (5), [Co^II(L²)₂](ClO₄)₂ (6), [Co^II(L³)₂](ClO₄)₂ (7), and [Co^II(L⁴)₂](ClO₄)₂ (8) (L¹ and L² are 2,9-dialkylcarboxylate-1,10-phenanthroline ligands; L³ and L⁴ are 6,6'-dialkylcarboxylate-2,2'-bipyridine ligands), have been obtained, and their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The metal center in all of these compounds has an oversaturated coordination number of 8, which is completed by two neutral homoleptic tetradentate ligands and is unconventional in 3d-metal compounds. These compounds are further characterized by electronic spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and magnetic measurements. CV measurements of these complexes in MeCN solution exhibit rich redox properties. Magnetic measurements on these compounds demonstrate that the observed single-ion magnetic (SIM) behavior in the previously reported [Fe^II(L¹)₂](ClO₄)₂ (1) is not a contingent case, since all of the 8-coordinate compounds 2-8 exhibit interesting slow magnetic relaxation under applied direct current fields.

High-coordinate CoII and FeII compounds constructed from an asymmetric tetradentate ligand show slow magnetic relaxation behavior

A seven-coordinate Co^II compound and an eight-coordinate Fe^II compound based on an asymmetric tetradentate ligand have been reported, and both of them exhibited slow magnetic relaxation behaviour.

Bis-meridional Fe2+ spincrossover complexes of phenyl and pyridyl substituted 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthrolines

Fe²⁺ spincrossover complexes [Fe(L)₂]²⁺ (L = substituted (pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline) were prepared and SCO with changing coordination numbers was identified by ¹H NMR spectroscopy and in silico modeling.

Site preferences in hetero-metallic [Fe9-xNix] clusters: a combined crystallographic, spectroscopic and theoretical analysis

The reaction of mixtures of Fe(O₂CMe)₂·2H₂O and Ni(O₂CMe)₂·4H₂O of various compositions with di-2-pyridyl ketone (py₂CO, dpk) in MeCN under an inert atmosphere afforded a family of hetero-metallic enneanuclear clusters with general formula [Fe_9-xNi_x(μ₄-OH)₂(O₂CMe)₈(py₂CO₂)₄] (2, x = 1.00; 3: x = 6.02; 4, x = 7.46; 5, x = 7.81). Clusters 2-5 are isomorphous to the homo-metallic [Fe₉] cluster (1) previously reported by some of us, and also isostructural to the known homo-metallic [Ni₉] cluster. All four clusters contain a central M^II ion in an unusual 8-coordinate site and eight peripheral M^II ions in distorted octahedral environments. The distribution of Fe^II and Ni^II ions over these two distinct coordination sites in 2-5 can be established through a combination of X-ray fluorescence and Mössbauer spectroscopies, which show that Fe^II preferentially occupies the unique 8-coordinate metal site while Ni^II accumulates in the octahedral holes. Density functional theory indicates that the distribution of ions across the two sites arises not from any intrinsic preference of the Fe^II ions for the 8-coordinate sites, but rather because of the large ligand field stabilization energy available to Ni^II in octahedral coordination.

Spin state variability in Fe2+ complexes of substituted (2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline) ligands as versatile terpyridine analogues

Slow magnetic relaxation in a mononuclear 8-coordinate Fe(ii) complex

The synthesis and structure of an 8-coordinate Fe(ii) compound [Fe^II(L1)₂](ClO₄)₂ (1) with a [FeN₄O₄] core are reported. It is the first example of an 8-coordinate Fe(ii) complex exhibiting field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour.

Synthesis of six-coordinate mono-, bis-, and tris(tetrazolato) complexes via [3 + 2] cycloadditions of nitriles to silicon-bound azido ligands

A convenient synthetic route to poly(tetrazolato) silicon complexes is described based on the four reactive centres of the N-rich, highly endothermic tetraazides of the type Si(N₃)₄(L₂). Hypercoordinate azido(tetrazolato) silicon complexes Si(N₃)₂(N₄C-R)₂(L₂), R = CH₃, C₆H₅, 4-C₆H₄CH₃ (4a, 5, 6, 7) and Si(N₃)₂(N₄C-L)₂ (9, L = 2-C₅H₄N), L₂ = 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, with SiN₆ skeletons were synthesised via multiple [3 + 2] dipolar cycloaddition reactions starting from Si(N₃)₄(L₂) and a nitrile. The isolated new complexes were characterised by standard analytical methods, single crystal X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (4a,b). Tetrazolato ligand linkage isomerism was observed for complex 4a. The crystallographically characterised methyl tetrazolato complexes and plausible configurational and linkage isomers were evaluated by DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level.

The SCO is mainly tuned by the octahedral distortion of the [FeN₆] core caused by intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and there is an exact correlation between SCO behavior and the amount of lattice water molecules existing in the crystal.

Distortion Pathways of Transition Metal Coordination Polyhedra Induced by Chelating Topology

A continuous shape measures analysis of the coordination polyhedra of a host of transition metal complexes with bi- and multidentate ligands discloses the distortion pathway associated with each particular topology of the chelate rings formed. The basic parameter that controls the degree of distortion is the metal-donor atom bond distance that induces nonideal bond angles due to the rigidity of the ligands. Thus, the degree of distortion within each family of complexes depends on the atomic size, on which the high- or low-spin state has a large effect. Special attention is therefore paid to several spin-crossover systems and to the enhanced distortions that go along with the transition from low- to high-spin state affected by temperature, light, or pressure. Several families of complexes show deviations from the expected distortion pathways in the high-spin state that can be associated to the onset of intermolecular interactions such as secondary coordination of counterions or solvent molecules. Also, significant displacement of counterions in an extended solid may result from the changes in metal-ligand bond distances when ligands are involved in intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
