Abstract
The bis(yldiide) mercury complex, (L-Hg-L) [L = C(PPh3)P(S)Ph2], is prepared from the corresponding potassium yldiide and used to access the first substituted yldiide actinide complexes [(C5Me5)2An(L)(Cl)] (An = U, Th) via salt metathesis. Compared to previously reported phosphinocarbene complexes, the complexes exhibit long actinide-carbon distances, which can be explained by the strong polarization of the π-electron density toward carbon.

Abstract
Designing ligands with efficient actinide (An(III))/lanthanide (Ln(III)) separation performance is still one of the key issues for the disposal of accumulated radioactive waste and the recovery of minor actinides. Recently, the hydrophilic ligands as promising extractants in the innovative Selective ActiNide Extraction (i-SANEX) process show excellent selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III), such as hydroxylated-based ligands. In this work, we investigated the selective back-extraction toward Am(III) over Eu(III) with three hydrophilic hydroxylated triazolyl-based ligands (the skeleton of pyridine La, bipyridine Lb, and phenanthroline Lc) using scalar-relativistic density functional theory. The properties of three hydrophilic hydroxylated ligands and the coordination structures, bonding nature, and thermodynamic properties of the Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with three ligands have been evaluated using multiple theoretical methods. The results of molecular orbitals (MOs), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIMs), and natural bond orbital (NBO) reveal that Am-N bonds possess more covalent character compared to Eu-N bonds. The thermodynamic results indicate that the complexing ability of Lb and Lc with metal ions is almost the same, which is stronger than that of La. However, La has the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity among three ligands, which is attributed to the largest difference in covalency between Am-Ntrzl and Eu-Ntrzl bonds in MLa(NO3)3. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the preferential selectivity of the hydrophilic hydroxylated ligands with An(III) over Ln(III) and also provides theoretical support for designing potential hydrophilic ligands with excellent separation performance of Am(III)/Eu(III).

Abstract
Rigid thioether- and selenoether-containing pincer proligands H[AS2 Ph 2 ] (1) and H[ASe2 Ph 2 ] (2) were synthesized, and deprotonation provided the potassium salts [K(AS2 Ph 2 )(dme)] (3) and [K(ASe2 Ph 2 )(dme)2 ] (4). Reaction of two equivalents of 3 or 4 with [UI4 (dioxane)2 ] afforded the uranium thioether complex [(AS2 Ph 2 )2 UI2 ] (5) and the first example of a uranium-selenoether complex, [(ASe2 Ph 2 )2 UI2 ] (6). X-ray structures revealed distorted square antiprismatic geometries in which the AE2 Ph 2 ligands are κ3 -coordinated. The nature of the U-ER2 bonding in 5 and 6, as well as methyl-free analogues of 5 and 6 and a hypothetical ether analogue, was investigated computationally (including NBO, AIM, and ELF calculations) illustrating increasing covalency from O to S to Se.

Abstract
A facile synthesis of an americium complex with a sulfur-donor ligand has been developed, allowing characterization of americium bonding from multiple perspectives via several techniques. Reaction of 243Am with S2P(OEt)2- yields the tetrakis complex [Am(S2P(OEt)2)4]- that can be crystallized as the tetraphenylarsonium salt. Structures obtained from single crystal X-ray diffraction show bond length discrepancies from the neodymium analogue consistent with the soft-donor bond enhancement common to actinides. Solid state optical spectroscopy confirms interaction of the ligand with 5f orbitals. 31P nuclear magnetic reflects the minor paramagnetism of Am(III). Computational investigations through CASSCF calculations, ligand-field density functional theory, and quantum chemical topological analysis allow a quantification of covalency or orbital interaction effects via total energy density and nephelauxetic parameters, both of which indicate greater covalency in the americium species than in the neodymium analogue or the americium aquo complex.

Abstract
The oxidation and disproportionation of anionic phosphide ligands in yttrium complexes with elemental sulfur and selenium are reported. The mixed TpMe2/Cp supported yttrium phosphide complex TpMe2CpYPPh2(THF) (1) reacted with one equiv. of elemental S or Se in THF at room temperature to deliver two structurally characterized yttrium dithio- or monoseleno-phosphinates TpMe2CpYS2PPh2(THF) (2) and TpMe2CpYSePPh2(THF) (4Se), respectively. Further investigations showed that the yttrium thiophosphinate TpMe2CpYSPPh2(THF) (4S) can be isolated from the reactions of 2 and 1 or 1 and elemental S in a short reaction time. Moreover, after keeping 4S or 4Se in THF solution for some days, 2 or [(TpMe2)2Y]+[Se2PPh2]- (5) was obtained by a disproportionation process. The mechanism for the construction of the Ph2PE- and Ph2PE2- (E = S, Se) ligands has been discussed based on the in situ NMR experiments and some designed reactions.

Abstract
A series of zinc complexes bearing the anilido-imino ligand [(o-C6H4{N(C6H3iPr2)}{C(CH3) = NC6H3iPr2})] [(LDipp)ZnX] has been generated. This includes two amide derivatives, [(LDipp)Zn(N{SiMe3}2)] and [(LDipp)Zn(NH{Dipp})] and two phosphanide derivatives, [(LDipp)ZnPCy2] and [(LDipp)ZnPPh2]. The chemistry of the phosphanide complexes towards chalcogens was examined, with sulfur, selenium and tellurium oxidising the phosphorus centre of the dicylohexylphosphanide complex [(LDipp)ZnPCy2] to form [(LDipp)Zn(E)2PCy2] (E = S, Se, Te). Addition of tellurium to the diphenylphosphanide complex [(LDipp)ZnPPh2] results in formation of Ph2PPPh2 and [(LDipp)ZnTeZn(LDipp)]. The absorption and emission properties of these complexes was examined and the quantum yields are highly dependent upon the non-ancillary ligand X.

Abstract
Abstract
Organic selenium- and tellurium-phosphorus compounds have found wide application as reagents in synthetic inorganic and organic chemistry, such as oxygen/chalcogen exchange, oxidation/reduction, nucleophilic/electrophilic substitution, nucleophilic addition, free radical addition, Diels–Alder reaction, cycloadditions, coordination, and so on. This chapter covers the main classes of phosphorus-selenium/tellurium reagents, including binary phosphorus-selenium/tellurium species, organophosphorus(III)-selenium/tellurium compounds, phosphorus(V)-selenides/tellurides, diselenophosphinates/ditellurophopshinates, diselenaphosphetane diselenides, Woollins’ reagent, phosphorus-selenium/tellurium amides, and imides. Given the huge amount of literature up to mid-2017, this overview is inevitably selective and will focus particularly on their synthesis, reactivity, and applications in synthetic and coordination chemistry.

Abstract
The electronic structures of a series of uranium hexahalide and uranyl tetrahalide complexes were simulated at the density functional theoretical (DFT) level. The resulting electronic structures were analyzed using a novel application of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) by exploiting the high symmetry of the complexes to determine 5f- and 6d-shell contributions to bonding via symmetry arguments. This analysis revealed fluoride ligation to result in strong bonds with a significant covalent character while ligation by chloride and bromide species resulted in more ionic interactions with little differentiation between the ligands. Fluoride ligands were also found to be most capable of perturbing an existing electronic structure. 5f contributions to overlap-driven covalency were found to be larger than 6d contributions for all interactions in all complexes studied while degeneracy-driven covalent contributions showed significantly greater variation. σ-contributions to degeneracy-driven covalency were found to be consistently larger than those of individual π-components while the total π-contribution was, in some cases, larger. Strong correlations were found between overlap-driven covalent bond contributions, U–O vibrational frequencies, and energetic stability, which indicates that overlap-driven covalency leads to bond stabilization in these complexes and that uranyl vibrational frequencies can be used to quantitatively probe equatorial bond covalency. For uranium hexahalides, degeneracy-driven covalency was found to anti-correlate with bond stability.

Abstract
The inverse trans influence (ITI) is investigated in uranyl, UO22+, and its isoelectronic imido (U(NH)22+) and carbene (U(CH2)22+) analogues at the density functional and complete active space self consistent field levels of theory. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules is employed to quantify, for the first time, the effect of the ITI on covalent bond character and its relationship to bond lengths and complex stability.

Abstract
The electronic structure of f-element compounds is complex due to a combination of relativistic effects, strong electron correlation and weak crystal field environments. However, a quantitative understanding of bonding in these compounds is becoming increasingly technologically relevant. Recently, bonding interpretations based on analyses of the physically observable electronic density have gained popularity and, in this Feature Article, the utility of such density-based approaches is demonstrated. Application of Bader's Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) is shown to elucidate many properties including bonding trends, orbital overlap and energy degeneracy-driven covalency, oxidation state identification and bond stability, demonstrating the increasingly important role that simulation and analysis play in the area of f-element bond characterisation.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterisation of a rare U(iii) alkyl complex, U[η4-Me2NC(H)C6H5]3, using the dimethylbenzylamine (DMBA) ligand has been accomplished. While attempting to prepare the U(iv) compound, reduction to the U(iii) complex occurred. In the analogous Th(iv) system, C-H bond activation of a methyl group of one dimethylamine was observed yielding Th[η4-Me2NC(H)C6H5]2[η5-(CH2)MeNC(H)C6H5] with a dianionic DMBA ligand. The utility of these complexes as starting materials has been analyzed using a bulky dithiocarboxylate ligand to yield tetravalent actinide species.

Abstract
Tetrametallic thorium compounds with a Th4E4 core (E = S, Se) having a distorted cubane structure can be prepared by ligand-based reductions of elemental E with thorium chalcogenolates, prepared by in situ oxidation of Th metal with a 3:1 mixture of PhEEPh and F5C6EEC6F5. Four compounds, (py)8Th4S4(μ2-SPh)4(SC6F5)4, (py)8Th4S4(μ2-SPh)4(SeC6F5)4, (py)8Th4Se4(μ2-SePh)4(SeC6F5)4, and (py)8Th4Se4(μ2-SePh)4(SC6F5)4, were isolated and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. These compounds clearly demonstrate the chemical impact of ring fluorination, with the less-nucleophilic EC6F5 ligands occupying the terminal binding sites and the EPh ligands bridging two metal centers. For this series of compounds, crystal packing and intermolecular π···π and H-bonding interactions result in a consistent motif and crystallization in a body-centered tetragonal unit cell. Solution-state 77Se NMR spectroscopy reveals that the solid-state structures are maintained in pyridine.
