Densely Packed Lanthanide Cubane Based 3D Metal–Organic Frameworks for Efficient Magnetic Refrigeration and Slow Magnetic Relaxation

Thiol and thioether-based metal-organic frameworks: synthesis, structure, and multifaceted applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are unique hybrid porous materials formed by combining metal ions or clusters with organic ligands. Thiol and thioether-based MOFs belong to a specific category of MOFs where one or many thiols or thioether groups are present in organic linkers. Depending on the linkers, thiol-thioether MOFs can be divided into three categories: (i) MOFs where both thiol or thioether groups are part of the carboxylic acid ligands, (ii) MOFs where only thiol or thioether groups are present in the organic linker, and (iii) MOFs where both thiol or thioether groups are part of azolate-containing linkers. MOFs containing thiol-thioether-based acid ligands are synthesized through two primary approaches; one is by utilizing thiol and thioether-based carboxylic acid ligands where the bonding pattern of ligands with metal ions plays a vital role in MOF formation (HSAB principle). MOFs synthesized by this approach can be structurally differentiated into two categories: structures without common structural motifs and structures with common structural motifs (related to UiO-66, UiO-67, UiO-68, MIL-53, NU-1100, etc.). The second approach to synthesize thiol and thioether-based MOFs is indirect methods, where thiol or thioether functionality is introduced in MOFs by techniques like post-synthetic modifications (PSM), post-synthetic exchange (PSE) and by forming composite materials. Generally, MOFs containing only thiol-thioether-based ligands are synthesized by interfacial assisted synthesis, forming two-dimensional sheet frameworks, and show significantly high conductivity. A limited study has been done on MOFs containing thiol-thioether-based azolate ligands where both nitrogen- and sulfur-containing functionality are present in the MOF frameworks. These materials exhibit intriguing properties stemming from the interplay between metal centres, organic ligands, and sulfur functionality. As a result, they offer great potential for multifaceted applications, ranging from catalysis, sensing, and conductivity, to adsorption. This perspective is organised through an introduction, schematic representations, and tabular data of the reported thiol and thioether MOFs and concluded with future directions.

Magnetocaloric Properties in Rare-Earth-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Influence of Magnetic Density and Hydrostatic Pressure

Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in metal-organic frameworks (MOF) is regarded as an attractive approach to create more sustainable cooling systems with higher efficiency than traditional ones. Here, we report a study of the MCE in a series of rare-earth-based MOFs. We have considered the selection of the rare-earth cation by investigating materials belonging to the α-rare-earth polymeric framework-4 (α-RPF-4) MOF family, synthesized with different rare-earth cations, and observed that paramagnetic moment and saturation magnetization play an important role in enhancing the magnetic entropy change ΔSM. The effect of structural parameters has also been considered by investigating three classes of metal-organic Gd materials built up from different types of inorganic secondary building units, including clusters (as in Gd-UiO-66), one-dimensional (as in α-RPF-4), and layered (as in Gd-LRH) conformations. Moreover, the analysis of the hydrostatic pressure influence reveals a significant increase in the -ΔSM and relative cooling power (RCP) with values between 4.3 and 16.3 and 121-509 J/kg. Specifically, the RCPmax found was ∼683 J/kg for Gd-UiO-66, which is higher than the one recently observed for Gd2SiO5 (649.5 J/kg). The present study demonstrates that the engineering of metal-organic framework systems based on high Gd densities may favor enhancing of magnetocaloric responses even at low pressures, thus promoting a new design strategy for efficient cooling devices.

Rare-earth squarate frameworks with topology

As a typical planar 4-connected ligand that possesses D_4h symmetry, the squarate ligand is expected to construct some interesting topologies. Here, we report that the assembly of the squarate ligand with rare-earth ions can produce a series of (4, 8)-connected frameworks with the "smallest" scu type topology. Among these compounds, the Tb based analogue not only possesses a good proton conductivity, but also exhibits luminescence responses toward MnO₄^- and Cr₂O₇^2-, making it a candidate for multifunctional materials.

Anionic lanthanide metal-organic frameworks with magnetic, fluorescence, and proton conductivity properties and selective adsorption of a cationic dye

Two novel microporous anionic lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), namely {[(CH₃)₂NH₂][Ln(bptc)]·2H₂O}_n (Ln = Gd (1) and Dy (2), H₄bptc = biphenyl-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid) with a new 4,8-connected topology have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Ln-MOF 1 shows a significant magnetocaloric effect with -ΔSmaxm = 26.37 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 7 T, and a high proton conductivity of 1.02 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 at 323 K and 90% RH. Moreover, Ln-MOF 1 shows specific selective adsorption of the cationic dye Rhodamine B. Ln-MOF 2 exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with an energy barrier (U_eff) of 48.19 K, characteristic emission of Dy³⁺, and selective adsorption of Rhodamine B. Therefore, 2 is a multifunctional Ln-MOF with magnetic, fluorescence and selective adsorption properties.

Magnetic cooling: a molecular perspective

The magnetocaloriceffect is considered as an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technique which can take cooling technology to the next level. Apart from its commercial application at room temperature, magnetic refrigeration is an up-and-coming solution for the cryogenic regime, especially as an alternative to He³ systems. Molecular magnets reveal advantageous features for ultra-low cooling which are competitive with intermetallic and lanthanide alloys. Here, we present a guide to the current status of magnetocaloric effect research of molecular magnets with a theoretical background focused on the inverse magnetocaloric effect and an overview of recent results and developments, including the rotating magnetocaloric effect.

Magnetocaloric Effect of Two Gd-Based Frameworks

Magnetic refrigeration material is the key to adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration technology. In this work, two magnetic refrigerants, Gd5(C4O4)(HCOO)3(CO3)2(OH)6·2.5H2O (1) and Gd2(OH)4SO4 (2), were prepared through hydrothermal reaction. Magnetic study reveals that their magnetic entropy changes are 24.8 J kg−1 K−1 for 1 and 15.1 J kg−1 K−1 for 2 at 2 K and 2 T, respectively. The magnetic entropy changes of 1 and 2 at T = 2 K and ∆H = 2 T exceed most gadolinium hydroxyl compounds, indicating that magnetic refrigerants with large magnetic entropy changes at low magnetic fields can be obtained by introducing more weak magnetic exchange ligands to replace hydroxyl groups in gadolinium hydroxyl compounds.

Molecular assemblies from linear-shaped Ln4 clusters to Ln8 clusters using different β-diketonates: disparate magnetocaloric effects and single-molecule magnet behaviours

A series of tetranuclear lanthanide-based clusters [Ln₄(dbm)₆(L)₂(CH₃OH)₄]·2CH₃OH (Ln(III) = Gd (1), Dy (2), and Ho (3); H₃L = 2-[(2-(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide)methyl]-2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, Hdbm = dibenzoylmethane) and octanuclear lanthanide-based clusters [Ln₈(HL)₁₀(CH₃O)₄(CH₃OH)₂]·6CH₃OH (Ln(III) = Gd (4), Dy (5)) were assembled using a polydentate Schiff-base ligand H₃L and two different β-diketone salts via a solvothermal method, and their structures and magnetic properties have been characterized. Interestingly, β-diketones play an important role in assembling and affecting the structures of Ln₄ to Ln₈ clusters. This is the first use of β-diketone to affect the structures of polynuclear Ln(III)-based clusters from linear-shaped Ln₄ clusters to Ln₈ clusters. Magnetic studies revealed that antiferromagnetic interactions exist in clusters 1-Gd4 and 4-Gd8. More importantly, clusters 1-Gd4 and 4-Gd8 display significant cryogenic magnetic refrigeration properties (-ΔS_m = 24.88 J kg^-1 K^-1 for 1-Gd4 and -ΔS_m = 32.52 J kg^-1 K^-1 for 4-Gd8); the results show that cluster 4-Gd8 exhibits a larger magnetocaloric effect than 1-Gd4. Cluster 2-Dy4 shows remarkable single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior (ΔE/k_B = 67.5 K and τ₀ = 3.06 × 10^-7 s) under a zero dc field, and 5-Dy8 exhibits a field-induced SMM-like behavior (ΔE/k_B = 39.83 K and τ₀ = 2.12 × 10^-7 s) under a 5000 Oe dc field.

A Gd-based borate-carbonate framework exhibiting a large magnetocaloric effect at a low magnetic field

A 3D borate-carbonate framework, GdB(OH)₄CO₃ (1), was synthesized. Magnetic study reveals that its MCE is up to 33.5 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 2 K and 2 T, due to the introduction of a long magnetic exchange path of Gd-O-B-O-Gd leading to 1 exhibiting weak magnetic interaction.

A Family of Lanthanide Hydroxo Carboxylates with 1D Polymeric Topology and Ln4 Butterfly Core Exhibits Switchable Supramolecular Arrangement

The unique family of coordination polymers [Ln₄(OH)₂(piv)₁₀(H₂O)₂]_∞ of 11 lanthanides (Ln = La-Er) has been prepared by a simple solution method based on controlled hydrolysis. The ribbon-like polymeric structure consisting of connected tetranuclear clusters and supported by pivalate ligands and a framework of H-bonds has been revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. While the compounds demonstrate similar PXRD patterns and unit cell parameters, the joint single-crystal XRD and pair distribution function data suggest the significant local structure change along the lanthanide series. The compounds exist as two packing polymorphs (α and β) with similar ribbon geometry, but different supramolecular arrangement of the ribbons. Dehydration of either polymorph does not disturb the tetranuclear core but leads to a translational symmetry loss along the ribbon and a transformation of the 3D-ordered crystal into a 2D-ordered mesostructure. Rehydration of the mesostructure leads to the β polymorph (except La and Ce), allowing the deliberate switching between the polymorphs via dehydration-rehydration evidenced by means of powder X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, and density functional theory calculations. Ab initio calculations reveal significant magnetic anisotropy of Ln³⁺ ions with ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions within tetranuclear [Ln₄(OH)₂(piv)₁₀(H₂O)₂] species. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated antiferromagnetic coupling, slow magnetic relaxation for Dy, Ho, and Er complexes, and field-induced single-chain magnetism for the Dy compound.

Significantly Enhancing the Lithium Ionic Conductivity of Metal-Organic Frameworks via a Postsynthetic Modification Strategy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), due to their possessing a porous structure, are potential candidates for solid-state ionic conduction materials. Moreover, uncoordinated carboxylic acid groups (-COOH) of MOFs can be used as postsynthetic modification sites, which are favorable for lithium ion exchange. Herein, we synthesized a unique multiple carboxylic zinc metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF-COOH) containing uncoordinated carboxylic acid groups. Zn-MOF-COOLi was synthesized through deprotonation using LiOH via a straightforward acid-base reaction at room temperature (RT), thereby exhibiting better good electrochemical properties. The lithium ionic conductivity (σ) increased from 1.81 × 10^-5 to 1.65 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1, lithium ion transference number (t_Li⁺) rose from 0.67 to 0.77, and the electrochemical window improved from 2.0-5.5 to 1.5-6.5 V. This work offers a new strategy to improve the σ of MOFs and a new perspective toward manufacturing of high-performance solid-state ionic conduction materials.

Field-induced single molecule magnet behavior of a dinuclear cobalt(II) complex: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Two dinuclear cobalt(ii) complexes, [(dmso)CoIIL1(μ-(m-NO2)C6H4COO)CoII(NCS)] (1) and [(dmso)CoIIL2(μ-(m-NO2)C6H4COO)CoII(NCS)] (2) [dmso = dimethylsulfoxide, H2L1 = (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-methoxyphenol) and H2L2 = (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)bis(6-ethoxyphenol)] have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic-susceptibility measurements and various spectroscopic techniques. Each complex contains a cobalt(ii) center with a slightly distorted octahedral geometry and a second cobalt(ii) center with a distorted trigonal prismatic one. To obtain insight into the physical nature of weak non-covalent interactions, we have extensively used the Bader's quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM). In addition, the non-covalent interaction reduced density gradient (NCI-RDG) methods established the presence of such non-covalent intermolecular interactions. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements show that both cobalt centers in each complex are in the high spin state (S = 3/2) and both complexes show weak ferromagnetic couplings through the double phenoxido bridges (J = 3.36(3) cm-1 in 1 and 4.56(2) cm-1 in 2). The magnetic properties of both complexes can be fitted to a Co(ii) dimer model including similar orbital reduction factors (α = -0.94(1) for 1 and -0.85(1) for 2) although different zero field splitting parameters D(1) = 11.0(4) cm-1 and D(2) = 19.5(4) cm-1 in 1 and D(1) = 8.2(4) cm-1 and D(2) = -1.3(4) cm-1 in 2. AC magnetic measurements reveal that the CoII2 unit in complex 2 exhibits field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures and high frequencies.

Modulating Magnetic and Photoluminescence Properties in 2-Aminonicotinate-Based Bifunctional Coordination Polymers by Merging 3d Metal Ions

Herein, the synthesis and study of bifunctional coordination polymers (CPs) with both magnetic and photoluminescence properties, derived from a heterometallic environment, are reported. As a starting point, three isostructural monometallic CPs with the formula [M(μ-2ani)₂ ]_n (M^II =Mn (1_Mn ), Co (3_Co ) and Ni (4_Ni ); 2ani=2-aminonicotinate), crystallise as chiral 2D-layered structures stacked by means of supramolecular interactions. These compounds show high thermal stability in the solid state (above 350 °C), despite which, in aqueous solution, compound 1_Mn is shown to partially transform into a novel 1D chain CP with the formula [Mn(2ani)₂ (μ-H₂ O)₂ ]_n (2_Mn ). A study of the direct current (dc) magnetic properties of 1_Mn , 3_Co and 4_Ni reveals a spin-canted structure derived from antisymmetric antiferromagnetic weak exchanges along the chiral network (as confirmed by DFT calculations) and magnetic anisotropy of the ions, in such a way that long-range ordering is observed with variable magnitude for the spin carriers. Moreover, compounds 3_Co and 4_Ni show no frequency-dependent alternating current (ac) susceptibility curves under zero dc field; this is characteristic behaviour of a glassy state that may be partially supressed for 3_Co by applying an external dc field. To overcome long-range magnetic ordering, Co^II ions are diluted in a diamagnetic Zn^II -based matrix, which enables single-molecule magnet behaviour. Interestingly, this strategy allows a bifunctional Co_x Zn_1-x 2ani material, which is imbued with a strong photoluminescent emitting capacity, as characterised by an intense blue light followed by a green afterglow, to be obtained.

Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in mixed valence di- and tri-nuclear CoII-CoIII complexes

Two novel mixed valence Co^II-Co^III complexes, namely [Co^IICo^III(L1)(ab)(mb)₂(H₂O)]·dmf (1) and [CoCo^II(L2)₄(H₂O)₄]·2H₂O (2) [H₂L1 = (E)-2-((1-hydroxybutan-2-ylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol, ab = 2-amino-butan-1-ol anion, mb = p-methyl benzoate, H₂L2 = 3-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzylidene)-amino)-propionic acid, and dmf = N,N-dimethyl-formamide], were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic studies at low temperature. The structure determination reveals that both complexes belong to the monoclinic system with P21/c (1) and I2/a (2) space groups. Complex 1 is a dinuclear Co^IIICo^II compound with distorted octahedral cobalt centers showing different coordination environments. In 2, a bent trinuclear CoCo^II complex, the coordination environments around the two terminal Co^III sites are alike, whereas they are different in the central Co^II ion. Alternating current/direct current (ac/dc) magnetic studies revealed that both complexes show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. The dc magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data were analyzed with the following Hamiltonianwhere D and E are the axial and rhombic zero-field splitting (zfs) parameters, respectively, and a good agreement between experimental and simulated results was found using the parameters g_⊥ = 2.585, g_∥ = 2.437, D = +98.1 cm^-1, E/D = 0.008 and F = 8.2× 10^-5 for 1 and g_⊥ = 2.580, g_∥ = 2.580, D = +55.4 cm^-1, and E/D = 0.000 for 2.

Remarkable Energy Barrier for Magnetization Reversal in 3D and 2D Dysprosium-Chloranilate-Based Coordination Polymers

Herein, two coordination polymers (CPs) [{Dy(Cl₂ An)_1.5 (CH₃ OH)}⋅4.5 H₂ O]_n (1) and [Dy(Cl₂ An)_1.5 (DMF)₂ ]_n (2), in which Cl₂ An is chloranilate (2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone dianion), exhibiting field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior with moderate barrier of magnetization reversal are reported. Detailed structural and topological analysis disclosed that 1 has a 3D network, whereas 2 has a 2D layered-type structure. In both CPs, magnetic measurements showed weak antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the dysprosium centers and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with barriers of 175(9)K and 145(7)K for 1 and 2, respectively. Notably, the energy barriers of magnetization reversal of 1 and 2 are remarkable for metal-chloranilate-based 3D (1) and 2D (2) CPs. The temperature and field dependence of relaxation time indicate the presence of multiple relaxation pathways, such as direct, quantum tunneling of magnetization, Raman, and Orbach processes, in both CPs. Ab initio theoretical calculations reinforced the experimentally observed higher energy barrier in 1 as compared with 2 due to the presence of large transverse anisotropy in the ground state in the latter. The average transition magnetic moment between the computed low-lying spin-orbit states also rationalized the relaxation as Orbach and Raman processes through the first excited state. BS-DFT calculations were carried out for both CPs to provide more insight into the exchange interaction.

Magnetic Tunability in RE-DOBDC MOFs via NOx Acid Gas Adsorption

The magnetic susceptibility of NO_x-loaded RE-DOBDC (rare earth (RE): Y, Eu, Tb, Yb; DOBDC: 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is unique to the MOF metal center. RE-DOBDC samples were synthesized, activated, and subsequently exposed to humid NO_x. Each NO_x-loaded MOF was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, and the magnetic characteristics were probed by using a VersaLab vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Lanthanide-containing RE-DOBDC (Eu, Tb, Yb) are paramagnetic with a reduction in paramagnetism upon adsorption of NO_x. Y-DOBDC has a diamagnetic moment with a slight reduction upon adsorption of NO_x. The magnetic susceptibility of the MOF is determined by the magnetism imparted by the framework metal center. The electronic population of orbitals contributes to determining the extent of magnetism and change with NO_x (electron acceptor) adsorption. Eu-DOBDC results in the largest mass magnetization change upon adsorption of NO_x due to more available unpaired f electrons. Experimental changes in magnetic moment were supported by density functional theory (DFT) simulations of NO_x adsorbed in lanthanide Eu-DOBDC and transition metal Y-DOBDC MOFs.

A Series Three-Dimensional Ln4Cr4 (Ln = Gd, Tb, Er) Heterometallic Cluster-Based Coordination Polymers Containing Interesting Nanotubes Exhibiting High Magnetic Entropy

A series of novel 3D 3d-4f heterometallic cluster-based coordination polymers, [Ln₄Cr₄(μ₃-O)₄(μ₄-O)₄(NA)₈(H₂O)₁₂]·xH₂O (Ln = 1-Gd, 2-Tb, 3-Er; HNA = nicotinic acid; x = 13 (1-Gd), 11.33 (2-Tb), 15 (3-Er)), have been successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method using nicotinic acid as bridging ligand. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis indicated that the basic unit of Ln₄Cr₄ shows a butterfly-shaped structure. Furthermore, each Ln₄Cr₄ cluster connects with other four Ln₄Cr₄ clusters by bridging NA^- ligands to form a 3D structure containing interesting 1D honeycomb-shaped coordination nanotubes. The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of compound 1 revealed that the existence of antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling between the metal ions in the Gd₄Cr₄ clusters. Field-dependent isothermal magnetization studies displayed that the magnetic entropy change (-ΔS_m) value of 1-Gd reached 22.05 J K^-1 kg^-1.

Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of two heterometallic {Ln8Cr4} (Ln = Gd3+ and Tb3+) complexes with one-dimensional wave chain structure

Two heterometallic cluster {Ln8Cr4} were constructed from two classical “drum-like” {Ln4Cr2} building units associated by organic ligands HIN, displaying 1D wave chain structure. The MCE values for {Gd8Cr4} at 3 K and 7 T is 23.40 J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹.

Structures and magnetic properties of novel Ln(iii)-based pentanuclear clusters: magnetic refrigeration and single-molecule magnet behavior

The Gd5 cluster displays significant magnetic refrigeration properties, whereas the Dy5 cluster exhibits remarkable SMM behavior. Clusters 2, 4, and 5 display the characteristic lanthanum luminescence.

Magnetic Behavior of Luminescent Dinuclear Dysprosium and Terbium Complexes Derived from Phenoxyacetic Acid and 2,2’-Bipyridine

Two dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Dy2(L1)6(L2)2]·2EtOH (1) and [Tb2(L1)6(L2)2]·2EtOH (2) (HL1 = phenoxyacetic acid and L2 = 2,2’-bipyridine) were synthesized and the crystal structures were determined. In both complexes, the lanthanide centers are nine-coordinated and have a muffin geometry. Detailed magnetic study reveals the presence of field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior for complex 1, whereas complex 2 is non-SMM in nature. Further magnetic study with 1’, yttrium doped magnetically diluted sample of 1, disclosed the presence of Orbach and Raman relaxation processes with effective energy barrier, ∆E = 16.26 cm−1 and relaxation time, τo = 2.42 × 10−8 s. Luminescence spectra for complexes 1 and 2 in acetonitrile were studied which show characteristic emission peaks for DyIII and TbIII ions, respectively.

A Series of Lanthanide-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived from Furan-2,5-dicarboxylate and Glutarate: Structure-Corroborated Density Functional Theory Study, Magnetocaloric Effect, Slow Relaxation of Magnetization, and Luminescent Properties

Herein, through a dual-ligand strategy, we report eight isorecticular lanthanide(III) furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with the general formula {[Ln(2,5-FDA)_0.5(Glu)(H₂O)₂]· xH₂O} _n [Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5), Ho (6), Er (7), and Yb (8); 2,5-FDA^2- = furan-2,5-dicarboxylate and Glu^2- = glutarate; x = 0.5 for 1, 2, and 4 and x = 0 for 3 and 5-8], synthesized under solvothermal conditions by using an N, N'-dimethylformamide/H₂O mixed solvent system. Crystallographic data reveal that all eight Ln-MOFs 1-8 crystallize in the orthorhombic Pnma space group. All of the MOFs are isostructural as well as isomorphous with distorted monocapped square-antiprismatic geometry around the Ln1 metal center. In Ln-MOFs 1-8, the 2,5-FDA^2- and Glu^2- ligands exhibit μ₂-κ⁴,η¹:η¹:η¹:η¹ and μ₃-κ⁵,η²:η¹:η¹:η¹ coordination modes, respectively. Topologically, assembled Ln-MOFs 1-8 consist of the 2D cem topological type. The designed Ln-MOFs 1-8 are further explored for structure-corroborated density functional theory study. Meanwhile, room temperature photoluminescence properties of Ln-MOFs 2 and 4 and magnetic properties of Ln-MOFs 3 and 5 have been explored in detail. A highly intense, ligand-sensitized, Ln³⁺ f-f photoluminescence emission is exhibited by Ln-MOFs 2 [Eu³⁺ (red emission)] and 4 [Tb³⁺ (green emission)]. Magnetic studies suggest weak antiferro- and ferromagnetic interactions between adjacent Gd^III ions in Ln-MOF 3, thereby displaying a large magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic data measured at T = 2 K and Δ H = 30 kOe depict that the -Δ S_m value per unit mass reaches 32.1 J kg^-1 K^-1, which is larger than most of the Gd^III-based complexes reported. The alternating-current susceptibility measurements on Ln-MOF 5 revealed that out-of-phase signals are frequency- and temperature-dependent under both 0 and 2 kOe direct-current fields, thereby suggesting a typical slow magnetic relaxation behavior with two relaxation processes. This is further supported by the Cole-Cole plots at 2.4-6 K.

Phosphonate-assisted tetranuclear lanthanide assemblies: observation of the toroidic ground state in the TbIII analogue

The reaction of LnCl3·6H2O with a multidentate flexible Schiff base ligand (LH4), H2O3PtBu and trifluoroacetic acid (tfaH) afforded a series of homometallic tetranuclear complexes, [Ln4(LH2)2(O3PtBu)2(μ2-η1η1tfa)2][2Cl] (Ln = DyIII (1), TbIII (2) and GdIII (3)). The tetranuclear lanthanide core contains two structurally different lanthanide centres, one being in a distorted trigonal dodecahedron geometry and the other in a distorted trigonal prism. Complexes 1-3 were investigated via direct and alternating current (DC and AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements. Only 1 revealed a weak single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements on 1 reveal a frequency-dependent out-of-phase signal. However, the absence of distinct maxima in the χ'' peak (within the temperature/frequency range of our experiments) prevented deduction of the experimental energy barrier for magnetization reversal (Ueff) and the relaxation time. We have carried out extensive ab initio (CASSCF + RASSI-SO + SINGLE_ANISO + POLY_ANISO) calculations on complexes 1-2 to gain deeper insights into the nature of magnetic anisotropy. Our calculations yielded only one exchange coupling parameter between the two LnIII centres bridged by the ligand (neglecting the exchange between the LnIII centres that are not proximal wrt each other). All the extracted J values indicate a weakly antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal centres (J = -0.025 cm-1 for 1 and J = -0.015 cm-1 for 2). Calculated exchange coupled Ucal values of ∼5 and ∼1 cm-1 in 1 and 2 respectively nicely corroborated the experimental observations regarding weak and no SMM characteristics. Our calculations indicated the presence of a net single-molecule toroidal (SMT) behaviour in complex 2. On the other hand, fitting the magnetic data (susceptibility and magnetization) in the isotropic cluster 3 revealed weak AFM exchange couplings of J1 = 0.025 cm-1 and J2 = -0.020 cm-1 which are consistent with those for GdIII ions.

Two GdIII complexes with different structures and magnetocaloric properties induced by metal ion sources

Two 0D/3D Gd^III complexes based on dl-malic acid have been constructed and they display weak ferromagnetic behaviors and significant MCEs.
