Synthesis and Coordination Chemistry of a Phosphine-Decorated Fluorescein: “Double Turn-On” Sensing of Gold(III) Ions in Water

Yellow to blue switching of fluorescence by the tuning of the pentaphenylphosphole structure: phosphorus electronic state vs. ring conjugation

The interaction between diphenylacetylene and dichlorophenylphosphine under various conditions is a simple method for the preparation of pentaphenylphosphole derivatives exhibiting fluorescence properties. Depending on the electronic state of the various centers of the phospholic structure, it was possible to obtain molecules with fluorescence, as in the blue area for 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenyl-2,5-dihydro-phosphole-1-oxide (H₂PPPO), in the yellow area for 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylphosphole-1-oxide (PPPO) and in the cyan area for 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylphosphole (PPP). The effect of the structure and π-conjugation on the optical properties of these compounds was studied using PPP derivatives as examples. Unusual changes in the optical properties of PPP derivatives in solution and in the crystalline state are explained. In the case of agglomeration of PPPO and PPP molecules, the effect of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was observed to have weak fluorescence in solution and strong fluorescence in the aggregated state. However, for H₂PPPO, the AIE effect remains mild. With the help of experimental studies, supported by theoretical calculations, the main mechanism of the optical properties of pentaphenylphosphole derivatives has been revealed. It was observed that the intramolecular motions of PPPO and PPP are more limited in the solid state than the motions of H₂PPPO, which is associated with less conjugation of the phenyl rotors of H₂PPPO. The analysis of the structure and distribution of electron density showed why hydrogenation of the phosphole ring leads to a sharp change in the optical properties of pentaphenylphosphole derivatives, while the oxidation of phosphorus does not lead to the disappearance of the AIE effect and to a lesser extent affects the change in the fluorescence wavelength. Thus, it was shown how the regulation of various structural features of the phospholic ring helps to control the optical properties of such compounds.

Influence of the catalyst structure in the cycloaddition of isocyanates to oxiranes promoted by tetraarylstibonium cations

In the context of our work on electron deficient group 15 cations as Lewis acid catalysts, we have synthesized the triflate salts of a series of tetraarylstibonium cations of general formula [ArSbPh3]+ with Ar = Mes (4+), o-(dimethylamino)phenyl (5+), and o-((dimethylamino)methyl)phenyl (6+). These new cationic antimony derivatives, along with the known [Ph4Sb]+ (1+), 1-naphthyltriphenylstibonium (2+), and [(Ant)SbPh3]+ (3+), have been evaluated as catalysts for the cycloaddition of oxiranes and isocyanates under mild conditions. While all stibonium cations favor the 3,4-oxazolidinone products, the reactivities of 5+ and 6+ are hindered by the ancillary amino donor which quenches the Lewis acidity of the antimony center. A comparison of the other stibonium cations shows that 4+ is the most selective catalyst.

Synthesis and characterisation of fluorescent aminophosphines and their coordination to gold(i)

Three novel fluorescent aminophosphine ligands have been synthesised that incorporate napthyl (L1), pyrenyl (L2) and anthraquinone (L3) chromophores into their structures. The ligands react with [AuCl(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) to give neutral complexes of the form [AuCl(L1-3)]. Solid state, X-ray crystallographic data was obtained for the anthraquinone derivative, [AuCl(L3)], and showed a distorted linear coordination geometry at Au(i). The packing structure also revealed a number of intermolecular π-π interactions that involve the anthraquinone and phenyl units of the aminophosphine ligand. 31P NMR spectroscopic data revealed δP values of +42.2 (L1), +42.1 (L2) and +26.1 (L3) ppm, which shifted downfield upon coordination to Au(i) to +64.6, +64.7, and +55.8 ppm, respectively. Supporting TD-DFT studies were able to reproduce the structure and 31P NMR chemical shifts of [AuCl(L3)] as well as rationalise the HOMO-LUMO compositions. Photophysical studies showed that the appended fluorophore dominates the absorption and emission properties for the ligands and complexes, with the anthraquinone derivatives showing visible emission at ca. 570 nm which was attributed to the intramolecular charge transfer character of the phosphinoaminoanthraquinone fragment.

Supramolecular Assembly of Phosphole Oxide Based Alkynylplatinum(II) 2,6-Bis(N-alkylbenzimidazol-2'-yl)pyridine Complexes-An Interplay of Hydrophobicity and Aromatic π-Surfaces

A new class of phosphole oxide based alkynylplatinum(II) 2,6-bis(N-alkylbenzimidazol-2'-yl)pyridine (bzimpy) complexes were synthesized and characterized. Their self-assembly was driven by hydrophobic-hydrophobic and π-π stacking interactions. The self-assembly properties were also investigated by UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, which revealed that the alkyl-chain length of the bzimpy moiety and the π-surface area of the alkynyl ligand have significant influence on the overall self-assembly process. The alkyl-chain length also affected the morphological structures of the aggregates, which were studied by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Monitoring of Au(iii) species in plants using a selective fluorescent probe

A colorimetric and ratiometric probe with a push–pull chromophore dicyanoisophorone system, AuP, has been developed for the detection of Au(iii) species with highly sensitive and selective response to real-water samples and living tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana.

Crystal structure of 4'-allyl-4,5,6,7,2',7'-hexa-chloro-fluorescein allyl ester unknown solvate

In the title compound, 4'-allyl-4,5,6,7,2',7'-hexa-chloro-fluorescein allyl ester {systematic name: prop-2-en-1-yl 2,3,4,5-tetra-chloro-6-[2,7-di-chloro-6-hy-droxy-3-oxo-4-(prop-2-en-1-yl)-3H-xanthen-9-yl]benzoate}, C26H14Cl6O5, accompanied by unknown solvate molecules, the dihedral angle between the xanthene ring system (r.m.s. deviation = 0.046 Å) and the penta-substituted benzene ring is 71.67 (9)°. Both allyl groups are disordered over two sets of sites in statistical ratios. The scattering contributions of the disordered solvent mol-ecules (both Ph2O and CHCl3, as identified by NMR) were removed with the PLATON SQUEEZE algorithm [Spek (2015 ▸). Acta Cryst. C71, 9-18]. In the crystal, tetra-meric supra-molecular aggregates linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds occur; these further inter-act with neighboring aggregates through C-Cl⋯π inter-actions arising from the benzene rings, forming infinite two-dimensional sheets. Each C6Cl4 ring shifts in the direction perpendicular to the two-dimensional sheet, exhibiting a helical chain in which every C6Cl4 ring is utilized as both a donor and an acceptor of Cl⋯π contacts. Thus, these two-dimensional sheets pack in a helical fashion, constructing a three-dimensional network.

Revising Intramolecular Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) from First-Principles

Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) plays relevant roles in many areas of chemistry, including charge separation processes in photovoltaics, natural and artificial photosynthesis, and photoluminescence sensors and switches. As in many other photochemical scenarios, the structural and energetic factors play relevant roles in determining the rates and efficiencies of PET and its competitive photodeactivation processes. Particularly, in the field of fluorescent sensors and switches, intramolecular PET is believed (in many cases without compelling experimental proof) to be responsible of the quench of fluorescence. There is an increasing experimental interest in fluorophore's molecular design and on achieving optimal excitation/emission spectra, excitation coefficients, and fluorescence quantum yields (importantly for bioimaging purposes), but less efforts are devoted to fundamental mechanistic studies. In this Account, I revise the origins of the fluorescence quenching in some of these systems with state-of-the-art quantum chemical tools. These studies go beyond the common strategy of analyzing frontier orbital energy diagrams and performing PET thermodynamics calculations. Instead, the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the lowest-lying excited states are explored with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations and the radiative and nonradiative decay rates from the involved excited states are computed from first-principles using a thermal vibration correlation function formalism. With such a strategy, this work reveals the real origins of the fluorescence quenching, herein entitled as dark-state quenching. Dark states (those that do not absorb or emit light) are often elusive to experiments and thus, computational investigations can provide novel insights into the actual photodeactivation mechanisms. The success of the dark-state quenching mechanism is demonstrated for a wide variety of fluorescent probes, including proton, cation and anion targets. Furthermore, this mechanism provides a general picture of the fluorescence quenching which englobes intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT), ratiometric quenching, and those radiationless mechanisms believed to be originated by PET. Finally, this Account provides for the first time a computational protocol to quantitatively estimate this phenomenon and provides the ingredients for the optimal design of fluorescent probes from first principles.
