Abstract
Complexes of lanthanide(iii) ions (Ln) with tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N'',N'''-tetraacetate (DOTA) are a benchmark in the field of magnetism due to their well-investigated and sometimes surprising features. Ab initio calculations suggest that the ninth ligand, an axial water molecule, is key in defining the magnetic properties because it breaks the potential C4 symmetry of the resulting complexes. In this paper, we experimentally isolate the role of the water molecule by excluding it from the metal coordination sphere without altering the chemical structure of the ligand. Our complexes are therefore designed to be geometrically tetragonal and strict crystallographic symmetry is achieved by exploiting a combination of solution ionic strength and solid state packing effects. A thorough multitechnique approach has been used to unravel the electronic structure and magnetic anisotropy of the complexes. Moreover, the geometry enhancement allows us to predict, using only one angle obtained from the crystal structure, the ground state composition of all the studied derivatives (Ln = Tb to Yb). Therefore, these systems also provide an excellent platform to test the validity and limitations of the ab initio methods. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigation proves that the water molecule is indeed key in defining the magnetic anisotropy and the slow relaxation of these complexes.

Abstract
Oxygen quantification using luminescence has attracted considerable attention in various fields, including environmental monitoring and clinical analysis. Among the reported luminophores, trivalent lanthanide complexes have displayed characteristic narrow emission bands with high brightness. This bright emission is based on photo-sensitized energy transfer via organic triplet states. The organic triplet states in lanthanide complexes effectively react with the triplet oxygen, enabling oxygen quantification by lanthanide luminescence. Some TbIII and EuIII complexes with slow deactivation processes have also formed the excited state equilibrium, thus resulting in the emission-lifetime based oxygen sensing property. The combination of TbIII /EuIII emission, EuIII /SmIII emission, EuIII /ligand phosphorescence, and ligand fluorescence/ligand phosphorescence provide the ratiometric oxygen-sensing properties. Moreover, the reaction generates singlet oxygen species which exhibit numerous applications in the photo-medical field. The ligands with large π-conjugated aromatic systems, such as porphyrin, phthalocyanine, and polyaromatic compounds, induces highly efficient oxygen generation. The combination of effective luminescence with singlet-oxygen generation by the lanthanide complexes render them suitable for photo-driven theranostics. This review summarizes the research progress of lanthanide complexes with efficient oxygen-sensing and singlet-oxygen generation properties.

Abstract
We present the synthesis and reactivity of a newly developed, cyclen-based tris-aryloxide ligand precursor, namely cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArOH)3, and its coordination chemistry to uranium. The corresponding uranium(iii) complex [UIII((OAr t-Bu,t-Bu)3(Me)cyclen)] (1) was characterized by 1H NMR analysis, CHN elemental analysis and UV/vis/NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy. Since no single-crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis could be obtained from this precursor, 1 was oxidized with methylene chloride or silver fluoride to yield [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UIV(X)] (X = Cl (2), F (3)), which were unambiguously characterized and successfully crystallized to gain insight into the molecular structure by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (SC-XRD). Further, the activation of H2O and N2O by 1 is presented, resulting in the U(iv) complex [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UIV(OH)] (4) and the U(v) complex [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UV(O)] (6). Complexes 2, 3, 4, and 6 were characterized by 1H NMR analysis, CHN elemental analysis, UV/vis/NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy, IR vibrational spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetization measurements as well as cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, chemical oxidation of 3, 4, and 6 with AgF or AgSbF6 was achieved leading to complexes [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UV(F)2] (5), [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UV(OH)][SbF6] (7), and [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UVI(O)][SbF6] (8). Finally, reduction of 7 with KC8 yielded a U(iv) complex, spectroscopically and magnetochemically identified as K[(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UIV(O)].

Regulation of the Metal Center and Coordinating Anion of Mononuclear Ln(III) Complexes to Promote an Efficient Luminescence Response to Various Organic Solvents. Abstract
A series of mononuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(L1)(NO3)3], (Ln = Dy(III), 1; Tb(III), 3; and Eu(III), 4; L1 = (N1E,N2E)-N1,N2-bis((1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)methylene)cyclohexane-1,2-diamine) is obtained by reacting N-methylbenzimidazole-2-carbaldehyde (L2) and 1,2-cyclohexanediamine (L3) with Ln(NO3)3·6H2O under solvothermal conditions. L1 ligand is produced via an in situ Schiff base reaction of two molecules of L2 and one molecule of L3. The metal center Ln(III) is in a N4O6 environment formed by L1 and NO3-. NaSCN is added on the basis of 1 synthesis. One SCN- replaces one of the three coordinated NO3- anions in the 1 structure, and the complex [Dy(L1)(NO3)2(SCN)]·CH3CN (2) is synthesized. The complex 1 shows excellent luminescence response to petroleum ether (PET), an organic solvent. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to use a complex for sensing responses to PET. When the metal center is changed, the obtained mononuclear complexes 3 and 4 show an excellent luminescence response to tetrahydrofuran (THF). Lastly, 2 obtained by changing the coordinating anion shows an excellent luminescence response to dichloromethane. Herein, for the first time, we regulate the metal center and coordinating anion of lanthanide complexes to adjust the recognition and response of these complexes to different organic solvents.
