Probing the Effect of Axial Ligands on Easy-Plane Anisotropy of Pentagonal-Bipyramidal Cobalt(II) Single-Ion Magnets

Halide mediated modulation of magnetic interaction and anisotropy in dimeric Co(II) complexes

The burgeoning interest in the field of molecular magnetism is to perceive the high magnetic anisotropy in different geometries of metal complexes and hence to draw a magneto-structural correlation. Despite a handful of examples to exemplify the magnetic anisotropy in various coordination geometries of mononuclear complexes, the magnetic anisotropies for two different coordination geometries are underexplored. Employing an appropriate synthetic strategy utilizing the ligand LH2 [2,2'-{(1E,1'E)-pyridine2,6-diyl-bis(methaneylylidine)}-bis(azaneylylidine)diphenol] and cobalt halide salts in a 1 : 2 stoichiometric ratio in the presence of triethylamine allowed us to report a new family of dinuclear cobalt complexes [CoII2X2(L)(P)(Q)]·S with varying terminal halides [X = Cl, P = CH3CN, Q = H2O, S = H2O (1), X = Br, P = CH3CN, Q = H2O, S = H2O (2), X = I, P = CH3CN, and Q = CH3CN (3)]. All these complexes are characterized through single crystal X-ray crystallography, which reveals their crystallization in the monoclinic system P21/n space group with nearly identical structural features. These complexes share vital components, including Co(II) centers, a fully deprotonated ligand [L]2-, halide ions, and solvent molecules. The [L]2- ligand contains two Co(II) centers, where phenolate oxygen atoms bridge the Co(II) centers, forming a Co2O2 four-membered ring. Co1 demonstrates a distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry with axial positions for solvent molecules, while Co2 displays a distorted tetrahedral geometry involving phenolate oxygen atoms and halide ions. Temperature-dependent dc magnetic susceptibility measurements were conducted on 1-3 within a range of 2 to 300 K at 1 kOe. The χmT vs. T plots exhibit similar trends, with χmT values at 300 K higher than the spin-only value, signifying a significant orbital contribution. As the temperature decreases, χmT decreases smoothly in all the complexes; however, no clear saturation at low temperatures is observed. Field-dependent magnetization measurements indicate a rapid increase below 20 kOe, with no hysteresis and a low magnetic blocking temperature. DFT and CASSCF/NEVPT2 theoretical calculations were performed to perceive the magnetic interaction and single-ion anisotropies of Co(II) ions in various ligand-field environments.

Tetranuclear CoII4O4 Cubane Complex: Effective Catalyst Toward Electrochemical Water Oxidation

The reaction of Co(OAc)2·6H2O with 2,2'-[{(1E,1'E)-pyridine-2,6-diyl-bis(methaneylylidene)bis(azaneylylidene)}diphenol](LH2) a multisite coordination ligand and Et3N in a 1:2:3 stoichiometric ratio forms a tetranuclear complex Co4(L)2(μ-η1:η1-OAc)2(η2-OAc)2]· 1.5 CH3OH· 1.5 CHCl3 (1). Based on X-ray diffraction investigations, complex 1 comprises a distorted Co4O4 cubane core consisting of two completely deprotonated ligands [L]2- and four acetate ligands. Two distinct types of CoII centers exist in the complex, where the Co(2) center has a distorted octahedral geometry; alternatively, Co(1) has a distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry. Analysis of magnetic data in 1 shows predominant antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.1 cm-1), while the magnetic anisotropy is the easy-plane type (D1 = 8.8, D2 = 0.76 cm-1). Furthermore, complex 1 demonstrates an electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with an overpotential of 325 mV and Tafel slope of 85 mV dec-1, required to attain a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and moderate stability under alkaline conditions (pH = 14). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies reveal that compound 1 has a charge transfer resistance (Rct) of 2.927 Ω, which is comparatively lower than standard Co3O4 (5.242 Ω), indicating rapid charge transfer kinetics between electrode and electrolyte solution that enhances higher catalytic activity toward OER kinetics.

Trigonal prismatic coordination geometry imparted by a macrocyclic ligand: an approach to large axial magnetic anisotropy for Co(II)

Large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, expressed by a negative value of the axial zero-field splitting parameter D, has been achieved in a series of trigonal prismatic Co(II) complexes with the general formula [Co(L)X]Y, where L = 1,5,13,17,22-pentaazatricyclo[15.2.2.17,11]docosa-7,9,11(22)-triene, X = Cl-(1a,b), Br-(2), N3-(3), NCO-(4), NCS-(5), NCSe-(6), and Y = Cl-(1), Br-(2), NCS-(4), NCSe-(5), ClO4-(3,6). Complexes 1-6 are six-coordinate with the distorted trigonal prismatic geometry imparted by the pentadentate pyridine-/piperazine-based macrocyclic ligand L and by one monovalent coligand X-. Based on magnetic studies, all complexes 1-6 exhibit strong magnetic anisotropy with negative D-values ranging from about -20 to -41 cm-1. This variation in D (i.e. the increase of magnetic anisotropy) parallels the trend obtained by theoretical calculations and the lesser distortion of the coordination sphere with respect to the trigonal prismatic reference geometry. AC magnetic susceptibility investigations revealed field-induced single-molecule magnet behaviour for all complexes except Cl- derivative 1. The series investigated represents a rare example of Co(II) complexes with a robust trigonal prismatic geometry.

Binuclear cobalt(II) and two-dimensional manganese(II) coordination compounds self-assembled by mixed bipyridine-tetracarboxylic ligands with single-ion magnet properties

A cobalt(II) complex and manganese(II) coordination polymer, formulated as [Co2(H2btca)(mbpy)4][H2btca]·4H2O (1) and {Mn2(btca)(mbpy)2(H2O)2}n (2) (H4btca = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid; mbpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl), constructed by mixed bipyridine-tetracarboxylic ligands were synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structural analyses reveal that compound 1 is a discrete neutral binuclear molecule, while compound 2 is a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer. The metal ions in these compounds are well isolated, with an intramolecular Co2+⋯Co2+ distance of 9.170 Å for 1 and Mn2+⋯Mn2+ separation of 10.984 and 11.164 Å for 2 due to the bulk tetracarboxylic linker. This isolation gives rise to a single-ion magnetism origin of the compounds. Magnetic studies reveal a large zero-field splitting parameter D of 82.6 cm-1 for 1, while a very small D of 0.42 cm-1 was observed for 2. Interestingly, dynamic ac magnetic measurements exhibited slow magnetic relaxation under the external dc field of the two compounds, revealing the field-supported single-ion magnet (SIM) of 1 and 2. The detailed theoretical calculations were further applied to understand the electronic structures, magnetic anisotropy, and relaxation dynamics in 1 and 2. Combined with our recently reported compound (Eur. J. Inorg. Chem., 2022, e202200354), the foregoing results provide not only a rare binuclear cobalt(II) SIM and the first 2D manganese(II) SIM coordination polymer but also a bipyridine-tetracarboxylic ligand approach toward novel SIMs.

Supramolecular encapsulation of hexaaquacobalt(II) cations in a hydrogen-bonded framework for slow magnetic relaxation and high proton conduction

The supramolecular assembly of hexaaquacobalt(II) nitrate and a tetradentate carboxylate ligand resulted in the isolation of a cobalt hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF). Variable-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments reveal high thermal stability of the framework sustained by charge-assisted, multiple hydrogen bonding interactions with the co-former. Interestingly, the material shows field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization originating from the magnetically anisotropic Co²⁺ ions within the supramolecular framework, revealing a rare single-ion magnet (SIM) HOF. Additionally, the HOF also exhibits high proton conductivity above 100 °C due to the extensive H-bond networks and high content of water and carboxylate within the material. More importantly, these results not only observe the magnetic and electrical properties of an old molecule but also demonstrate a significant turn-on effect of multifunctionalities from non-functional synthons achieved in a supramolecular approach.

Field-Induced Single Molecule Magnetic Behavior of Mononuclear Cobalt(II) Schiff Base Complex Derived from 5-Bromo Vanillin

A mononuclear Co(II) complex of a Schiff base ligand derived from 5-Bromo-vanillin and 4-aminoantipyrine, that has a compressed tetragonal bipyramidal geometry and exhibiting field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and molecular spectroscopy. In the crystal packing, a hydrogen-bonded dimer structural topology has been observed with two distinct metal centers having slightly different bond parameters. The complex has been further investigated for its magnetic nature on a SQUID magnetometer. The DC magnetic data confirm that the complex behaves as a typical S = 3/2 spin system with a sizable axial zero-field splitting parameter D/hc = 38 cm−1. The AC susceptibility data reveal that the relaxation time for the single-mode relaxation process is τ = 0.16(1) ms at T = 2.0 K and BDC = 0.12 T.

Slow magnetic relaxation in mononuclear octa-coordinate Fe(II) and Co(II) complexes from a Bpybox ligand

Two 3d transition metal mononuclear complexes, [(FeL₂)(ClO₄)₂]₂·CH₃CN (1) and (CoL₂)(ClO₄)₂·2CH₃CN (2), have been prepared from a rigid tetradentate bpybox (L = 6,6'-bis(2,5-dihydrooxazol-4-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine) ligand. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses together with the help of calculations show that both compounds are octa-coordinate. Direct current magnetic studies reveal their significant magnetic anisotropy. Impressively, field-induced relaxation of magnetism is observed in the two complexes and the apparent anisotropy barriers are 14.1 K for 1 and 21.6 K for 2, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that two Fe(II) centers in 1 have small negative D values of -4.897 and -4.825 cm^-1 and relatively small E values of 0.646 and 0.830 cm^-1, indicating a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. In contrast, the D and E values in the Co(II) center of 2 are 46.42 cm^-1 and 11.51 cm^-1, featuring a rhombic anisotropy. This work demonstrates that field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in 3d transition metal complexes with high coordination numbers can be manipulated through rigid ligand design.

Co(II) single-ion magnets: synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties

Magnetoactive coordination compounds exhibiting bi- or multistability between two or more magnetic stable states present an attractive example of molecular switches. Currently, the research is focused on molecular nanomagnets, especially single molecule magnets (SMMs), which are molecules, where the slow relaxation of the magnetization based on the purely molecular origin is observed. Contrary to ferromagnets, the magnetic bistability of SMMs does not require intermolecular interactions, which makes them particularly interesting in terms of application potential, especially in the high-density storage of data. This paper aims to introduce the readers into a basic understanding of SMM behaviour, and furthermore, it provides an overview of the attractive Co(II) SMMs with emphasis on the relation between structural features, magnetic anisotropy, and slow relaxation of magnetization in tetra-, penta-, and hexacoordinate complexes.

Magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and lanthanide ions in pentagonal bipyramidal geometry

The magnetic anisotropy associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) coordination sphere is examined on the basis of experimental and theoretical investigations. The origin and the characteristics of this anisotropy are discussed in relation to the electronic configuration of the metal ions. The effects of crystal field, structural distortion, and a second-coordination sphere on the observed anisotropies for transition meal and lanthanide ions are outlined. For the Ln derivatives, we focus on compounds showing SMM-like behavior (i.e. slow relaxation of their magnetization) in order to highlight the essential chemical and structural parameters for achieving strong axial anisotropy. The use of PBP complexes to impart controlled magnetic anisotropy in polynuclear species such as SMMs or SCMs is also addressed. This review of the magnetic anisotropies associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal coordination sphere for transition metal and lanthanide ions is intended to highlight some general trends that can guide chemists towards designing a compound with specific properties.

Hydrogen-Bonded Framework of a Cobalt(II) Complex Showing Superior Stability and Field-Induced Slow Magnetic Relaxation

A unique hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganic framework (HOIF) constructed from a mononuclear cobalt(II) complex, [Co(MCA)₂·(H₂O)₂] (HMCA = 4-imidazolecarboxylic acid), via multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions was synthesized and structurally characterized. The Co(II) center in the HOIF features a highly distorted octahedral coordination environment. Remarkably, the Co^II HOIF showed permanent porosity with superior stability as established by combined thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), variable-temperature infrared spectra (IR), variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction data (PXRD), and a CO₂ isotherm. Structural studies reveal that short multiple hydrogen bonds should be responsible for the superior thermal and chemical stability of a HIOF. Magnetic investigations reveal the large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy of the Co²⁺ ions with the fitted D values being 22.1 (magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data) and 29.1 cm^-1 (reduced magnetization data). In addition, the HOIF exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation at low temperature with an effective energy barrier of U_eff = 45.2 cm^-1, indicative of a hydrogen-bonded framework single-ion magnet of the compound. The origin of the significant magnetic anisotropy of the complex was also understood from computational studies. In addition, BS-DFT calculations indicate that the superexchange interactions between the neighboring Co^II ions are non-negligible antiferromagnetism with J_Co-Co = -0.5 cm^-1. The foregoing results provide not only a carboxylate-imidazole ligand approach toward a stable HOIF but also a promising way to build a robust single-ion magnet via hydrogen-bond interactions.

Largely Enhancing the Blocking Energy Barrier and Temperature of a Linear Cobalt(II) Complex through the Structural Distortion: A Theoretical Exploration

Complete-active-space self-consistent field and N-electron valence second-order perturbation theory have both been employed to investigate the magnetic anisotropy of one two-coordinate cobalt(II) compound via altering the Co-C bond lengths and twist angle φ. The calculated energy barrier U_eff decreases with the decrease in the Co-C bond lengths due to the gradually increasing interaction between the 3d orbitals of Co^II and the coordination ligand field and then to the decrease in the ground orbital angular moment L of Co^II. Thus, we cannot improve U_eff simply by shortening the Co-C bond lengths. However, by rotating the twist angle φ from 60 to 0°, it is surprising to find that the energy barrier and blocking temperature can be enhanced up to 1559.1 cm^-1 and 90 K, respectively, with φ = 0°, which are prominent even among lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets.

Tuning the structure and magnetic properties via distinct pyridine derivatives in cobalt(II) coordination polymers

Precise modulation of the structure and magnetic properties of coordination compounds is of great importance in the development of framework magnetic materials. Herein, we report that the coordination self-assembly of a neutral cobalt(II) magnetic building block and selective pyridine derivatives as organic linkers has led to two distinct cobalt(II) coordination polymers, {Co(DClQ)₂(bpy)}_n (1) and {Co₂(DClQ)₄(tpb)}_n (2) (DClQ = (5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline; bpy = 4, 4'-dipyridine; tpb = 1,2,4,5-tetra(4-pyridyl)benzene)). Structural analyses revealed that 1 and 2 are one-dimensional (1D) and 2D coordination polymers containing the same neutral magnetic building block [Co(DClQ)₂] bridged by bitopic bpy and tetratopic tpb ligands, respectively. Both the complexes have a distorted octahedral CoN₄O₂ coordination geometry around each cobalt center offered by the bidentate ligand and organic linkers. Magnetic studies reveal large easy-plane and easy-axis magnetic anisotropy for 1 and 2, respectively. However, because of the weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the bpy-bridged Co^II centers, no slow relaxation of the magnetization was observed in 1 under both zero or applied dc fields. Interestingly, complex 2 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation under external fields, indicative of a framework single-ion magnet of 2. Theoretical calculations further support the experimental results and unveil that the D values are +65.3 and -91.2 cm^-1 for 1 and 2, respectively, while the magnetic exchange interaction was precisely estimated as -0.16 (1) and -0.009 (2) cm^-1. The foregoing results show that the structural dimensionality and magnetic properties can be rationally modified via pre-designed magnetic building blocks and a suitable choice of organic bridging ligands.

Trinuclear Cyanido-Bridged [Cr2 Fe] Complexes: To Be or not to Be a Single-Molecule Magnet, a Matter of Straightness

Trinuclear systems of formula [{Cr(L^N3O2Ph )(CN)₂ }₂ M(H₂ L^N3O2R )] (M=Mn^II and Fe^II , L^N3O2R stands for pentadentate ligands) were prepared in order to assess the influence of the bending of the apical M-N≡C linkages on the magnetic anisotropy of the Fe^II derivatives and in turn on their Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behaviors. The cyanido-bridged [Cr₂ M] derivatives were obtained by assembling trans-dicyanido Cr^III complex [Cr(L^N3O2Ph )(CN)₂ ]^- and divalent pentagonal bipyramid complexes [M^II (H₂ L^N3O2R )]²⁺ with various R substituents (R=NH₂ , cyclohexyl, S,S-mandelic) imparting different steric demand to the central moiety of the complexes. A comparative examination of the structural and magnetic properties showed an obvious effect of the deviation from straightness of the M-N≡C alignment on the slow relaxation of the magnetization exhibited by the [Cr₂ Fe] complexes. Theoretical calculations have highlighted important effects of the bending of the apical C-N-Fe linkages on both the magnetic anisotropy of the Fe^II center and the exchange interactions with the Cr^III units.

Slow magnetic relaxation in high-coordinate Co(II) and Fe(II) compounds bearing neutral tetradentate ligands

The first-row transition metal compounds, [M^II(L1)₂](ClO₄)₂ (M = Ni (1); Co (2)), have been prepared by treatment of a neutral tetradentate ligand (L1 = N²,N⁹-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide) with metal perchlorate salts in MeOH. Both compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and it was found that the coordination numbers are 6 and 7, respectively. The reaction of 6,6'-bis(2-^tbutyl-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (L2) with hydrated Fe^II(ClO₄)₂ afforded a 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound, [Fe^II(L2)₂](ClO₄)₂ (3); however its reaction with hydrated Co^II(ClO₄)₂ resulted in 6-coordinate [Co^II(L2)₂](ClO₄)₂. It is interesting to observe field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in the 7-coordinate Co(II) compound 2 and 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound 3, which further supports the validity of designing high coordination number compounds as single-molecule magnets. Direct current magnetic studies demonstrate that 2 has a very large positive D value (56.2 cm^-1) and a small E value (0.66 cm^-1), indicating easy plane magnetic anisotropy. Consistent with the larger D value, an effective spin-reversal barrier of U_eff = 100 K (71.4 cm^-1) is obtained, which is the highest value reported for 7-coordinate Co(II) complexes with a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. In contrast, 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound 3 exhibits uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.

Effect of coverage on the magnetic properties of -COOH, -SH, and -NH2 ligand-protected cobalt nanoparticles

Implementation of magnetic nanoparticles in biomedicine requires their passivation, which often comes at a cost of diminished magnetic properties. For the design of nano-agents with targeted magnetic behaviour, it is important to distinguish between ligands which can improve desired performance, and those that reduce it. Carboxylic acid-, thiol-, and amine-protected cobalt nanoparticles were studied by density functional theory calculations to model the impact of ligand coverage on the magnetic properties. The simulations show that the functional group, arrangement, and coverage density of the ligand coating control both the total magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropy energy of the nanoparticle, as well as the distribution of local spin magnetic moments across the metallic core. Captured effects of ligand binding on the orbital moments of cobalt atoms were insignificant. Out of the three ligand families, only carboxylic acid coatings increased the magnetic moments of cobalt nanoparticles, while amines and thiols quenched them. Calculated anisotropy energies of protected nanoparticles consistently increased with the growing ligand density, reaching the highest values for a 100% coverage of both carboxylic acid and thiol coatings. However, the binding nature of the two functional groups showed opposite impacts on the d-states of interacting cobalt atoms. This study has thus established important principles for the design of biocompatible magnetic nanocomposites, highlighting different routes to achieve desired magnetic behaviour.

Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation from linear trinuclear CoIII-CoII-CoIII to grid [2 × 2] tetranuclear mixed-valence cobalt complexes

By employing the ligand azotetrazolyl-2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene (H3ATD), two linear trinuclear mixed-valence cobalt complexes [CoIICoIII2(HATD)4(H2O)4]·4DMA·3H2O (1, DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide) and [CoIICoIII2(HATD)4(DMF)2(H2O)2]·2DMF·2H2O (2, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) were synthesized. Two [2 × 2] grid-like tetranuclear ion-pair complexes [CoII2CoIII2(HATD)4(bpp)2(H2O)2][CoIII(HATD)2]2·8DMF·6H2O (3, bpp = 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine) and [CoII2CoIII2(HATD)4(bpp)2(H2O)2][CoIII(HATD)2]2·8DMSO·4MeOH (4, DMSO = dimethyl sulphoxide) were obtained by the reaction of complex 1/2 with tridentate-chelating bpp in DMF and DMSO, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that complexes 1 and 2 have a similar core, in which the DMA in 1 acts as a guest molecule, and the DMF in 2 acts as a coordinated molecule and guest molecule. Complexes 3 and 4 are isostructural. All the Co(ii) ions in 1-4 are present in a distorted octahedral geometry. The ac susceptibility measurements show that all complexes display frequency-dependent peaks in the out-of-phase (χm'') component of the alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility data, which is the characteristic behavior of single molecule magnets (SMMs).

Slow Magnetic Relaxation in a One-Dimensional Coordination Polymer Constructed from Hepta-Coordinate Cobalt(II) Nodes

A one-dimensional coordination polymer was synthesized employing hepta-coordinate CoII as nodes and dicyanamide as linkers. Detailed direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behavior of the magnetically isolated seven-coordinate CoII center with an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. Detailed ab initio calculations were performed to understand the magnetic relaxation processes. To our knowledge, the reported complex represents the first example of slow magnetic relaxation in a one-dimensional coordination polymer constructed from hepta-coordinate CoII nodes and dicyanamide linkers.

Alignment of Axial Anisotropy in a 1D Coordination Polymer shows Improved Field Induced Single Molecule Magnet Behavior over a Mononuclear Seven Coordinated FeII Complex

Herein, we report a CN-bridged alternating Fe^II -Ni^II 1D chain to ensure the alignment of axial anisotropy and improve the single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in seven coordinated Fe^II compound. The chain was constructed from hepta coordinated Fe(II) complex as an anisotropic building unit and diamagnetic nickel tetra cyanate as a bridging ligand. The magnetic measurements show the easy-axis anisotropy of the seven coordinated Fe(II) complex and field induced SMM behavior with spin reversal energy barrier U_eff =61(2) K (42 cm^-1 ) and pre-exponential relaxation time τ₀ =1.9×10^-8  s. The detailed analysis of the relaxation dynamics discloses that the Orbach process plays an important role in slow relaxation of magnetization for this compound. Notably, this example represents a remarkable energy barrier observed in hepta coordinated Fe(II) SMMs. The ab initio calculations estimate the magnitude of axial anisotropy and show the parallel orientation of the anisotropic axis throughout the 1D polymeric chain. In addition, it is also reported that the presence of weak π accepter ligands in the distorted axial position enhance the easy-axis anisotropy.

Co(II)-Based single-ion magnets with 1,1'-ferrocenediyl-bis(diphenylphosphine) metalloligands

Herein, we report on investigations of magnetic and spectroscopic properties of three heterobimetallic Fe(ii)-Co(ii) coordination compounds based on the tetracoordinate {CoP2X2} core encapsulated by dppf metalloligand, where X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3), dppf = 1,1'-ferrocenediyl -bis(diphenylphosphine). The analysis of static magnetic data has revealed the presence of axial magnetic anisotropy in compounds (1) and (2) and this was further confirmed by high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopy. Dynamic magnetic data confirmed that (1) and (2) behave as field-induced Single-Ion Magnets (SIMs). Together with bulk studies, we have also tested the possibility of depositing (2) as thick films on Au(111), glass, and polymeric acetate by drop-casting as well as thermal sublimation, a key aspect for the development of future devices embedding these magnetic objects.

Late first-row transition metal complexes of a 17-membered piperazine-based macrocyclic ligand: structures and magnetism

A 17-membered piperazine-based macrocyclic ligand LdiProp (1,5,13,17,22-pentaazatricyclo[15.2.2.17,11]docosa-7,9,11(22)-triene) was resynthesized in high yield by using a linear pump. Its Mn(ii), Fe(ii), Co(ii) and Ni(ii) complexes of the general formula [MnLdiProp(ClO4)2] (1), [FeLdiProp(CH3CN)](ClO4)2 (2), [CoLdiProp(CH3CN)](ClO4)2 (3), [NiLdiProp](ClO4)2 (4) were prepared and thoroughly characterized. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that Mn(ii) complex 1 has capped trigonal prismatic geometry with a coordination number of seven, Fe(ii) and Co(ii) complexes 2 and 3 are trigonal prismatic with a coordination number of six and Ni(ii) complex 4 has square pyramidal geometry with a coordination number of five. The decrease of the coordination number is accompanied by a shortening of M-N distances and an increase of torsion of the piperazine ring from the equatorial plane. Magnetic measurement reveals moderate anisotropy for 4 and rather large magnetic anisotropy for 2 and 3 (axial zero-field splitting parameter D(Ni) = 9.0 cm-1, D(Fe) = -14.4 cm-1, D(Co) = -25.8 cm-1, together with rather high rhombicity). Co(ii) complex 3 behaves as a field-induced SMM with a combination of Raman and direct or Orbach and direct relaxation mechanisms. Obtained magnetic data were extensively supported by theoretical CASSCF calculations. The flexibility and rather large 17-membered macrocyclic cavity of ligand LdiProp could be responsible for the variation of coordination numbers and geometries for the investigated late-first row transition metals.

Slow magnetic relaxation and water oxidation activity of dinuclear CoIICoIII and unique triangular CoIICoIICoIII mixed-valence complexes

Construction of efficient multifunctional materials is one of the greatest challenges of our time. We herein report the magnetic and catalytic characterization of dinuclear [CoIIICoII(HL1)2(EtOH)(H2O)]Cl·2H2O (1) and trinuclear [CoIIICoII2(HL2)2(L2)Cl2]·3H2O (2) mixed valence complexes. Relevant structural features of the complexes have been mentioned to correlate with their magnetic and catalytic properties. Unique structural features, especially in terms of significant distortions around the CoII centre(s), prompted us to test both spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and zero field splitting (ZFS) methodologies for the systems. The positive sign of D values has been established from X-band EPR spectra recorded in the 5-40 K temperature range and reaffirmed by CAS/NEVPT2 calculations. ZFS tensors are also extracted for the compounds along with CoIIGaIII and CoIIZnIICoIII model species. Interestingly, 1 shows slow relaxation of magnetization below 6.5 K in the presence of a 1000 Oe external dc field with two relaxation processes (Ueff = 37.0 K with τ0 = 1.57 × 10-8 s for the SR process and Ueff = 7 K with τ0 = 1.66 × 10-6 s for the FR process). As mixed valence cobalt complexes with various nuclearities are central to the quest for water oxidation catalysts, we were prompted to explore their features and to our surprise, water oxidation ability has been realized for both 1 and 2 with significant nuclearity control.

Structural, magnetic, redox and theoretical characterization of seven-coordinate first-row transition metal complexes with a macrocyclic ligand containing two benzimidazolyl N-pendant arms

A structurally new heptadentate derivative of a 15-membered pyridine-based macrocycle containing two benzimidazol-2-yl-methyl N-pendant arms (L = 3,12-bis((1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)methyl)-6,9-dioxa-3,12,18-triazabicyclo[12.3.1]octadeca-1(18),14,16-triene) was synthesized and its complexes with the general formula [M(L)](ClO4)2·1.5CH3NO2 (M = MnII (1), FeII (2), CoII (3) and NiII (4)) were thoroughly investigated. X-ray crystal structures confirmed that all complexes are seven-coordinate with axially compressed pentagonal bipyramidal geometry having the largest distortion for NiII complex 4. FeII, CoII and NiII complexes 2, 3 and 4 show rather large magnetic anisotropy manifested by moderate to high obtained values of the axial zero-field splitting parameter D (7.9, 40.3, and -17.2 cm-1, respectively). Magneto-structural correlation of the FeII, CoII and NiII complexes with L and with previously studied structurally similar ligands revealed a significant impact of the functional group in pendant arms on the magnetic anisotropy especially that of the CoII and NiII complexes and some recommendations concerning the ligand-field design important for anisotropy tuning in future. Furthermore, complex 3 showed field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior described with the Raman (C = 507 K-n s-1 for n = 2.58) relaxation process. The magnetic properties of the studied complexes were supported by theoretical calculations, which very well correspond with the experimental data of magnetic anisotropy. Electrochemical measurements revealed high positive redox potentials for M3+/2+ couples and high negative redox potentials for M2+/+ couples, which indicate the stabilization of the oxidation state +ii expected for the σ-donor/π-acceptor ability of benzimidazole functional groups.

Optimal diamagnetic dilution concentration for suppressing the dipole-dipole interaction in single-ion magnets

The effect of screening the Co^II moment of monomeric [Co^IIL₂(H₂O)] (L = 8-hydroxyquinaldine), having a trigonal bipyramid coordination, by diamagnetic Zn in Co_xZn_1-x solid solutions on its magnetic relaxation was explored using ac-susceptibility, high-field electron-spin-resonance measurements and CASPT2 calculations. The retention of the crystal structure for all the solid solutions was demonstrated using single crystal diffraction. The dc-magnetization and theoretical fittings of the susceptibility for Co₁ and Co_0.1Zn_0.9 gave a large zero-field-splitting (ZFS) D of 50 ± 6 cm^-1, and very weak dipole interaction between the nearest neighbors, while EPR and calculations confirmed the positive sign of the axial component (D). Consistent parameters were obtained from experiments and theory. Importantly, only field-induced relaxation was observed for the samples with less than 50% Co and a gradual change in the barrier energy to moment reversal and relaxation times was observed between 11% and 20% Co, while both were enhanced for higher dilutions. The results establish a clear barrier for extending the longevity of the magnetism for this type of single-ion species by lowering the intramolecular interactions. The results suggest that the magnetic interaction persists up to the second sphere, that is, for a dilution of 1 in 9 (11% Co). Importantly, this method is applicable to all single-ion magnet systems, that is, the optimum dilution concentration to restrain the dipole field can be given only by the single crystal structure.

Two penta-coordinate [Co(Lⁿ)(NCS)]ClO₄ with substituted pyridyl based bispyrazolyl ligands have been structurally characterized. The complexes show an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy, large rhombicity and slow relaxation of magnetization.

Two Four-Coordinate and Seven-Coordinate CoII Complexes Based on the Bidentate Ligand 1, 8-Naphthyridine Showing Slow Magnetic Relaxation Behavior

For a long time, the cobalt(II) complex ([Co(napy)₄ ](ClO₄ )₂ ) (napy=1, 8-naphthyridine) has been considered as an eight-coordinate complex without any structural proof. After careful considerations, two complexes [Co(napy)₂ Cl₂ ] (1) and [Co(napy)₄ ](ClO₄ )₂ (2) based on the bidentate ligand napy were synthesized and structurally characterized. X-ray single-crystal structural determination showed that the cobalt(II) center in [Co(napy)₂ Cl₂ ] (1) is four-coordinate with a tetrahedral geometry (T_d ), while [Co(napy)₄ ](ClO₄ )₂ (2) is seven-coordinate rather than eight-coordinate with a capped trigonal prism geometry (C_2v ). Direct-current (dc) magnetic data revealed that complexes 1 and 2 possess positive zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters of 11.08 and 25.30 cm^-1 , respectively, with easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. Alternating current(ac) susceptibility measurements revealed that both complexes showed slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the presence of easy-plane magnetic anisotropy (D>0) for complexes 1 and 2 is in agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, these results pave the way to obtain four-coordinate and seven-coordinate cobalt(II) single-ion magnets (SIMs) by using a bidentate ligand.

A Series of Field-Induced Single-Ion Magnets Based on the Seven-Coordinate Co(II) Complexes with the Pentadentate (N3O2) H2dapsc Ligand

A series of five new mononuclear pentagonal bipyramidal Co(II) complexes with the equatorial 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone) ligand (H2dapsc) and various axial pseudohalide ligands (SCN, SeCN, N(CN)2, C(CN)3, and N3) was prepared and structurally characterizated: [Co(H2dapsc)(SCN)2]∙0.5C2H5OH (1), [Co(H2dapsc)(SeCN)2]∙0.5C2H5OH (2), [Co(H2dapsc)(N(CN)2)2]∙2H2O (3), [Co(H2dapsc)(C(CN)3)(H2O)](NO3)∙1.16H2O (4), and {[Co(H2dapsc)(H2O)(N3)][Co(H2dapsc)(N3)2]}N3∙4H2O (5). The combined analyses of the experimental DС and AC magnetic data of the complexes (1–5) and two other earlier described those of this family [Co(H2dapsc)(H2O)2)](NO3)2∙2H2O (6) and [Co(H2dapsc)(Cl)(H2O)]Cl∙2H2O (7), their theoretical description and the ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations reveal large easy-plane magnetic anisotropies for all complexes (D = + 35 − 40 cm‒1). All complexes under consideration demonstrate slow magnetic relaxation with dominant Raman and direct spin–phonon processes at static magnetic field and so they belong to the class of field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs).

Phosphine Oxide Ligand Based Tetrahedral CoII Complexes with Field-induced Slow Magnetic Relaxation Behavior Modified by Terminal Ligands

Two isostructural mononuclear Co^II complexes, [Co(xantpo)(NCE)₂ ] (E=S (1) and O (2); xantpo=9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphoryl) xanthene), supported by a bidentate phosphine oxide ligand are reported. The cobalt complexes exhibit characteristic tetrahedral structures coordinated with two oxygen and two nitrogen atoms. Magnetic property measurements show their similar static magnetic behaviours but very different dynamic magnetic behaviours. Both complexes show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviours, but the relaxation of 2 is much slower than that of 1. Fittings to the magnetic data and ab initio CASSCF calculations reveal significant changes in the zero field splitting (ZFS) parameters (D and E), which can be attributed to the small geometrical changes of the Co ions and the different ligand field strength of the two terminal ligands.

Synthesis and magnetic studies of pentagonal bipyramidal metal complexes of Fe, Co and Ni

Three mononuclear metal complexes [MII(L-N3O2)(MeCN)2][BPh4]2 (M = Fe, 1; Co, 2; Ni, 3) were isolated and structurally characterized. Magnetic studies revealed uniaxial magnetic anisotropy for 1 (D = -17.1 cm-1) and 3 (D = -14.3 cm-1) and easy-plane magnetic anisotropy for 2 (D = +36.9 cm-1). Slow magnetic relaxation was observed for complexes 1 and 2 under an applied magnetic field, both of which are dominated by a Raman process.
