Ruthenium-Catalyzed Oxidative Homocoupling of Arylboronic Acids in Water: Ligand Tuned Reactivity and Mechanistic Study

Bis-Imidazole Methane Ligated Ruthenium(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Activity for Hydrogen Production from Formic Acid in Water

A series of half sandwich arene-ruthenium complexes [(η⁶-arene)RuCl(κ²-L)]⁺ ([Ru]-1-[Ru]-10) containing bis-imidazole methane-based ligands {4,4'-(phenylmethylene)bis(2-ethyl-5-methyl-1H-imidazole)} (L1), {4,4'-((4-methoxyphenyl)methylene)bis(2-ethyl-5-methyl-1H-imidazole)} (L2), {4,4'-((2-methoxyphenyl)methylene)bis(2-ethyl-5-methyl-1H-imidazole)} (L3), {4,4'-((4-chlorophenyl)methylene)bis(2-ethyl-5-methyl-1H-imidazole)} (L4), and {4,4'-((2-chlorophenyl)methylene)bis(2-ethyl-5-methyl-1H-imidazole)} (L5) are synthesized. The synthesized and purified complexes ([Ru]-1-[Ru]-10) are further employed for hydrogen production from formic acid in aqueous medium. Among the investigated complexes, [(η⁶-p-cymene)RuCl(κ²-L2)]⁺ [Ru]-2, having Ru(II) coordinated 4-methoxy phenyl substituted bis-imidazole methane ligand (L2), outperformed over others, displaying a higher catalytic turnover of 8830 and high efficiency (TOF = 1545 h^-1) with appreciably high long-term stability for formic acid dehydrogenation in water.

Porphyrin N-Pincer Pd(II)-Complexes in Water: A Base-Free and Nature-Inspired Protocol for the Oxidative Self-Coupling of Potassium Aryltrifluoroborates in Open-Air

Metalloporphyrins (and porphyrins) are well known as pigments of life in nature, since representatives of this group include chlorophylls (Mg-porphyrins) and heme (Fe-porphyrins). Hence, the construction of chemistry based on these substances can be based on the imitation of biological systems. Inspired by nature, in this article we present the preparation of five different porphyrin, meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP), meso-tetra(p-anisyl)porphyrin (TpAP), tetrasodium meso-tetra(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TSTpSPP), meso-tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (TmHPP), and meso-tetra(m-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TmCPP) as well as their N-pincer Pd(II)-complexes such as Pd(II)-meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (PdTPP), Pd(II)-meso-tetra(p-anisyl)porphyrin (PdTpAP), Pd(II)-tetrasodium meso-tetra(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (PdTSTpSPP), Pd(II)-meso-tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (PdTmHPP), and Pd(II)-meso-tetra(m-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (PdTmCPP). These porphyrin N-pincer Pd(II)-complexes were studied and found to be effective in the base-free self-coupling reactions of potassium aryltrifluoroborates (PATFBs) in water at ambient conditions. The catalysts and the products (symmetrical biaryls) were characterized using their spectral data. The high yields of the biaryls, the bio-mimicking conditions, good substrate feasibility, evading the use of base, easy preparation and handling of catalysts, and the application of aqueous media, all make this protocol very attractive from a sustainability and cost-effective standpoint.

Cu(II)-Catalyzed Homocouplings of (Hetero)Arylboronic Acids with the Assistance of 2-O-Methyl-d-Glucopyranose

This is the first report of a natural ligand improving the copper-catalyzed homocouplings of (hetero)arylboronic acids. Various important synthetic biaryl intermediates in organic synthesis could be assembled via this method. To gain insight into this reaction, in situ React IR technology was used to confirm the effectivity of this catalyst system. This protocol could provide important biaryl compounds in high yields within a short time.

Reactions in Water - A Greener Approach Using Ruthenium Catalysts

Reactions using transition metals as catalysts have emerged as an efficient method in the recent times. However, the selection of solvent plays a crucial role in this regard. Several solvents used traditionally suffer majorly with problems of toxicity; high boiling point etc. leading to drastic reaction conditions. Water being a non-toxic, non-inflammable and environmentally benign can replace the hazardous organic solvents in laboratory as well as industry. Maintaining a minimum catalyst loading percentage we can advantageously avail high levels of selectivity. Water was found to be a good solvent medium for several metal catalysed reactions. An intramolecular deprotonation mechanism is followed by the ruthenium (II) catalysts in water; thereby, facilitating the catalytic action of the metal. These studies can help the industrial chemists to utilize water as a solvent for their reactions towards improvement of their waste management procedure. This review mainly focuses on the several recent developments in the above direction.

Anticancer Activity and Catalytic Potential of Ruthenium(II)-Arene Complexes with N,O-Donor Ligands

The special ability of organometallic complexes to catalyze various transformations might offer new effective mechanisms for the treatment of cancer. Studies that report both the biological properties and the ability of metallic complexes to promote therapeutically relevant catalytic reactions are limited. Herein, we report the anticancer activity and catalytic potential of some ruthenium(II)-arene complexes bearing bidentate Schiff base ligands (2a and 2b) and their reduced analogues (5a and 5b, respectively). In comparison to their Schiff base counterparts 2a and 2b, we demonstrate that amine complexes 5a and 5b display (i) a higher in vitro antiproliferative activity on different human cancer cell lines, (ii) a lower rate of hydrolysis, and (iii) an improved initial catalytic rate for the reduction of NAD⁺ to NADH. In contrast to their imine analogues 2a and 2b, we also show that amine complexes 5a and 5b induce the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Our results highlight the impact that a simple ligand modification such as the reduction of an imine moiety can have on both the catalytic and biological activities of metal complexes. Moreover, the ruthenium complexes reported here display some antiproliferative activity against T47D breast cancer cells, known for their cis-platin resistance.

Synthesis and structure of new binuclear ruthenium(ii) arene benzil bis(benzoylhydrazone) complexes: investigation on antiproliferative activity and apoptosis induction

New binuclear Ru(ii) arene benzil bis(benzoylhydrazone) complexes show excellent cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines. The results of biochemical assays demonstrated that complexes are able to induce apoptosis.

A ruthenium-catalyzed alkenylation–annulation approach for the synthesis of indazole derivatives via C–H bond activation

A new approach to indazole derivatives through a Ru(ii)-catalyzed C–H activation–annulation reaction, which proceeds via C–C and C–N bond forming reactions, is reported.
