Anion-Controlled Positional Switching of a Phenyl Group about the Dinuclear Core of a AuSb Complex

Intermolecular Metal-Involving Pnictogen Bonding: The Case of σ-(SbIII)-Hole···dz2[PtII] Interaction

Cocrystallizations of trans-[PtX'2(NCNR2)2] (R2 = Me2, X' = Cl 1a, Br 1b, I 1c; R2 = (CH2)5, X' = I 2c) with SbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) gave 1:2 cocrystals 1a·2SbCl3, 1b·2SbBr3, 1c·2SbCl3, 1c·2SbBr3, 1c·2SbI3, and 2c·2SbI3. In all six X-ray structures, the association of the molecular coformers is achieved mainly by SbIII···dz2[PtII] metal-involving intermolecular pnictogen bonding. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations (based on experimentally determined geometries) using both gas-phase and solid-state approximations revealed that a σ-(Sb)-hole interacts with an area of negative potential associated with the dz2-orbital of the positively charged platinum(II) sites, thus forming a pnictogen bond whose energy falls in the range between -7.3 and -16.9 kcal/mol.

Mechanism of the Aryl-F Bond-Forming Step from Bi(V) Fluorides

In this article, we describe a combined experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigation of the C(sp2)-F bond formation from neutral and cationic high-valent organobismuth(V) fluorides, featuring a dianionic bis-aryl sulfoximine ligand. An exhaustive assessment of the substitution pattern in the ligand, the sulfoximine, and the reactive aryl on neutral triarylbismuth(V) difluorides revealed that formation of dimeric structures in solution promotes facile Ar-F bond formation. Noteworthy, theoretical modeling of reductive elimination from neutral bismuth(V) difluorides agrees with the experimentally determined kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, the addition of external fluoride sources leads to inactive octahedral anionic Bi(V) trifluoride salts, which decelerate reductive elimination. On the other hand, a parallel analysis for cationic bismuthonium fluorides revealed the crucial role of tetrafluoroborate anion as fluoride source. Both experimental and theoretical analyses conclude that C-F bond formation occurs through a low-energy five-membered transition-state pathway, where the F anion is delivered to a C(sp2) center, from a BF4 anion, reminiscent of the Balz-Schiemann reaction. The knowledge gathered throughout the investigation permitted a rational assessment of the key parameters of several ligands, identifying the simple sulfone-based ligand family as an improved system for the stoichiometric and catalytic fluorination of arylboronic acid derivatives.

Coordination and Electrochemical Switching on Paddle-Wheel Complexes Containing an As-Ru or a Sb-Ru Axis

Inspired by the known complex [PhP(μ-PyO)₄Ru(CO)] (PyO = 2-pyridyloxy), the family of group 15 paddle-wheel complexes has been expanded to [PhPn(μ-PyO)₄Ru(L)] (Pn = P, As, Sb; L = NCMe, CO). Solvent-dependent reversible switching between [PhAs(μ-PyO)₄Ru(NCMe)] and [PhAs(μ-PyO)₃Ru(κ²-PyO)] was detected. Electrochemical investigations of the [PhPn(μ-PyO)₄Ru(L)] complexes showed reversible oxidation of the complexes with L = NCMe and back-formation of the complexes with L = NCMe upon oxidation of the complexes with L = CO in NCMe. In the series of [PhPn(μ-PyO)₄Ru(L)] complexes, the Pn→Ru bonding mode is shifted from L-type Pn to X-type upon going from Pn = P and As to Pn = Sb, resulting in a pronounced electron-rich Ru site in the latter case. The easily accessible complex [PhSb(μ-PyO)₄RuCl] exhibits reversible electrochemical and coordinative exchange with its reduced analogue [PhSb(μ-PyO)₄Ru(NCMe)] under retention of the paddle-wheel motif and Sb-Ru bond properties.

Stannylenes based on pyrrole-phosphane and dipyrromethane-diphosphane scaffolds: syntheses and behavior as precursors to PSnP pincer palladium(II), palladium(0) and gold(I) complexes

2-Ditertbutylphosphanylmethylpyrrole (H₂pyrmP^tBu₂) and 2,2'-bis(diisopropylphosphanylmethyl)-5,5'-dimethyldipyrromethane ((HpyrmPⁱPr₂)₂CMe₂) have been used to synthesize new P-donor-stabilized stannylenes in which the Sn atom is attached to one, SnCl(HpyrmP^tBu₂) (1) and Sn{N(SiMe₃)₂}(HpyrmP^tBu₂) (2), or two pyrrolyl-phosphane scaffolds, Sn(HpyrmP^tBu₂)₂ (3), or to a dipyrromethane-diphosphane scaffold, Sn(pyrmPⁱPr₂)₂CMe₂ (4). It has been found that stannylenes 3 and 4 are excellent precursors to transition metal complexes containing PSnP pincer-type ligands. Their reactions with chlorido transition metal complexes have afforded [PdCl{κ³P,Sn,P-SnCl(HpyrmP^tBu₂)₂}] (6), [PdCl{κ³P,Sn,P-SnCl(pyrmPⁱPr₂)₂CMe₂}] (7) and [Au{κ³P,Sn,P-SnCl(HpyrmP^tBu₂)₂}] (8), which contain a PSnP pincer-type chloridostannyl ligand. While complexes 6 and 7 are square-planar palladium(II) complexes, compound 8 is an uncommon gold(I) complex having a T-shaped coordination geometry with a very long Sn-Au bond (3.120 Å). The T-shaped palladium(0) complex [Pd{κ³P,Sn,P-Sn(pyrmPⁱPr₂)₂CMe₂}] (9), which contains an unprecedented PSnP pincer-type stannylene that behaves as a Z-type (σ-acceptor) ligand, has been prepared from 4 and [Pd(η³-C₃H₅)(η⁵-C₅H₅)].

Structural Evidence for Pnictogen-Centered Lewis Acidity in Cationic Platinum-Stibine Complexes Featuring Pendent Amino or Ammonium Groups

As part of our continuing interest in the chemistry of cationic antimony Lewis acids as ligands for late transition metals, we have now investigated the synthesis of platinum complexes featuring a triarylstibine ligand substituted by an o-[(dimethylamino)methyl]phenyl group referred to as Ar^N. More specifically, we describe the synthesis of the amino stibine ligand Ph₂SbAr^N (L) and its platinum dichloride complex [LPtCl]Cl which exists as a chloride salt and which shows weak coordination of the amino group to the antimony center. We also report the conversion of [LPtCl]Cl into a tricationic complex [LHPt(SMe₂)]³⁺ which has been isolated as a tris-triflate salt after reaction of [LPtCl]Cl with SMe₂, HOTf and AgOTf. Finally, we show that [LHPt(SMe₂)][OTf]₃ acts as a catalyst for the cyclization of 2-allyl-2-(2-propynyl)malonate.

Enthalpy-Controlled Insertion of a "Nonspectator" Tricoordinate Phosphorus Ligand into Group 10 Transition Metal-Carbon Bonds

Insertion of a tricoordinate phosphorus ligand into late metal-carbon bonds is reported. Metalation of a P^P-chelating ligand (L1), composed of a nontrigonal phosphorous (i.e., P(III)) triamide moiety, P(N(o-N(Ar)C6H4)2, tethered by a phenylene linker to a -PiPr2 anchor, with group 10 complexes L2M(Me)Cl (M = Ni, Pd) results in insertion of the nontrigonal phosphorus site into the metal-methyl bond. The stable methylmetallophosphorane compounds thus formed are characterized spectroscopically and crystallographically. Metalation of L1 with (cod)PtII(Me)(Cl) does not lead to a metallophosphorane but rather to the standard bisphosphine chelate (κ2-L1)Pt(Me)(Cl). These divergent reactivities within group 10 are rationalized by reference to periodic variation in M-C bond enthalpies.

Catalysis using transition metal complexes featuring main group metal and metalloid compounds as supporting ligands

Recent development in catalytic application of transition metal complexes having an M-E bond (E = main group metal or metalloid element), which is stabilized by a multidentate ligand, is summarized. Main group metal and metalloid supporting ligands furnish unusual electronic and steric environments and molecular functions to transition metals, which are not easily available with standard organic supporting ligands such as phosphines and amines. These characteristics often realize remarkable catalytic activity, unique product selectivity, and new molecular transformations. This perspective demonstrates the promising utility of main group metal and metalloid compounds as a new class of supporting ligands for transition metal catalysts in synthetic chemistry.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of T-Shaped Coinage-Metal Complexes

The photophysical properties of a series of T‐shaped coinage d¹⁰ metal complexes, supported by a bis(mesoionic carbene)carbazolide (CNC) pincer ligand, are explored. The series includes a rare new example of a tridentate T‐shaped Ag^I complex. Post‐complexation modification of the Au^I complex provides access to a linear cationic Au^I complex following ligand alkylation, or the first example of a cationic square planar Au^III−F complex from electrophilic attack on the metal centre. Emissions ranging from blue (Cu^I) to orange (Ag^I) are obtained, with variable contributions of thermally‐dependent fluorescence and phosphorescence to the observed photoluminescence. Green emissions are observed for all three gold complexes (neutral T‐shaped Au^I, cationic linear Au^I and square planar cationic Au^III). The higher quantum yield and longer decay lifetime of the linear gold(I) complex are indicative of increased phosphorescence contribution.

Ruthenium Complexes of Stibino Derivatives of Carboxylic Amides: Synthesis and Characterization of Bidentate Sb,E, Tridentate Sb,E2, and Tetradentate Sb,E3 (E = N and O) Ligands and Their Reactivity Toward [RuCl2(PPh3)3]

Neutral bi-, tri-, and tetradentate ligands of the type Ph_3-xSb(L)_x [x = 1 (1), 2 (2), and 3 (3). L = La = phthalimidinyl (1a, 2a, and 3a), Lb = 2-pyridyloxy (1b, 2b, and 3b)] have been synthesized and characterized. Reaction of the Sb,E and Sb,E₂ ligands with [RuCl₂(PPh₃)₃] proceeded under anion scrambling with formation of complexes of type [Ph₂Sb(μ-L)₂Ru(PPh₃)(μ-Cl)]₂ (5) or [PhSb(μ-L)₃RuCl(PPh₃)] (8) in addition to various byproducts. Reactions of the Sb,E₃ ligands and [RuCl₂(PPh₃)₃] afforded highly diverse product mixtures. Deliberate syntheses of complexes of types 5 and 8 were successful by supplementing the reaction mixture with the required stoichiometric amount of either HLa or HLb and a supporting base. The Sb-Ru bonds, which are bridged by two (type 5) or three (type 8) phthalimidinyl or 2-pyridyloxy ligands, have been investigated using quantum chemical calculations at the DFT level (NBO/NLMO and AIM). Treatment of complexes of type 8 with fluoride ions resulted in the formation of compounds of type [PhFSb(μ-La)₃RuL'(PPh₃)] (L' = O₂ (9a-O₂), NCMe (9a-NCMe), or [PhFSb(μ-Lb)₂Ru(κ²-Lb)(PPh₃)] (10b)). In contrast to other similar bimetallic Sb-TM complexes (TM = transition metal), which may switch the rather dative intermetallic bond from Sb→TM to Sb←TM upon replacing TM bound chloride by Sb-bound fluoride, the character of the Sb→Ru bond is essentially retained upon going from chloro complex 5 or 8 to fluoro complex 9 or 10. Charge discrepancies caused by anion transfer from Ru to Sb are mainly compensated for by charge flow along the ligand backbone. All isolated complexes were characterized with multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and quantum chemical calculations.

Lewis Acidic PSbP Pincer Ligand in Pt-Catalyzed 1,6-Enyne Cycloisomerization: A Theoretical Study

The progressively improved heterobimetallic antimony transition metal complex PSbP-Pt (I1) provides superior activity in catalyzed 1,6-enyne cycloisomerization. Our DFT calculations demonstrate that the noninnocent character of the antimony ligand enhances the self-activation of the catalyst precursor through a substrate-aided intramolecular chloride migration, which triggers subsequent reaction. Designed alternative redox noninnocent active species with strong electron-withdrawing groups also show promising catalytic ability due to an electron-deficient antimony ligand, which lowers the typical reaction barrier for the cycloisomerization of 1,6-enyne.

A dipyrromethane-based diphosphane–germylene as precursor to tetrahedral copper(i) and T-shaped silver(i) and gold(i) PGeP pincer complexes

A dipyrromethane-based PGeP germylene has allowed the synthesis of unusual tetrahedral copper(i) and T-shaped silver(i) and gold(i) germyl complexes.

Heavier pnictinidene gold(i) complexes

N,C,N-Chelated pnictinidenes ArE [where E = As, Sb or Bi; Ar = 2,6-(tBuN[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)2C6H3] were used as ligands for the coordination of various gold(i) complexes. Thus, the reaction of ArE with [AuCl(Me2S)] gave complexes [AuCl(ArE)] [where E = As (1) or Sb (2)] that exhibited only limited stability in solution. By contrast, the reaction of ArBi with [AuCl(Me2S)] led to the immediate deposition of gold metal and the oxidation of the bismuth atom giving ArBiCl2. The treatment of a tetrameric gold alkynyl complex [Au(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh)]4 with ArAs and ArSb gave ionic compounds [Au(ArAs)2]+[Au2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh)3]- [denoted as 3+[Au2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh)3]-] and [Au(ArSb)2]+[Au(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh)2]- [denoted as 4+[Au(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh)2]-], respectively. Finally, the reaction of ArE with the carbene gold(i) complex [Au(IPr)(MeCN)]+[BF4]- [where IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene, MeCN = acetonitrile] produced ionic complexes [Au(IPr)(ArE)]+[BF4]- [for cations: E = As (5+), Sb (6+) or Bi (7+)]. All complexes were characterized using 1H and 13C NMR, high mass accuracy electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), IR and Raman spectroscopy and (except for 1) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Furthermore, the structure and bonding of both neutral and ionic complexes with different coordination patterns have also been investigated in detail using a Density Functional Theory (DFT) computational approach.

Insertion of a Nontrigonal Phosphorus Ligand into a Transition Metal-Hydride: Direct Access to a Metallohydrophosphorane

The synthesis and reactivity of an NPN-chelating ligand containing a nontrigonal phosphorous triamide center (L1 = P(N( o-N(2-pyridyl)C₆H₄)₂) is reported. Metalation of L1 with RuCl₂(PPh₃)₃ gives RuCl₂(PPh₃)(L1) (2). By contrast, metalation of L1 with RuHCl(CO)(PPh₃)₃ yields RuCl(CO)(PPh₃)(L1^H) (3), a chelated 10-P-5 ruthenahydridophosphorane, via net insertion into the Ru-H bond. Hydride abstraction from 3 with Ph₃CPF₆ gives [RuCl(CO)(PPh₃)(L1)]PF₆ (4); reaction of 4 with NaBH₄ returns 3.

Expansion of the (BB) 〉metallacycle with coinage metal cations: formation of B-M-Ru-B (M = Cu, Ag, Au) dimetalacyclodiboryls

In this work, we introduce a novel approach for the selective assembly of heterometallic complexes by unprecedented coordination of coinage metal cations to strained single ruthenium-boron bonds on a surface of icosahedral boron clusters. M(i) cations (M = Cu, Ag, and Au) insert into B-Ru bonds of the (BB)-carboryne complex of ruthenium with the formation of four-membered B-M-Ru-B metalacycles. Results of theoretical calculations suggest that bonding within these metalacycles can be best described as unusual three-center-two-electron B-M···Ru interactions that are isolobal to B-H···Ru borane coordination for M = Cu and Ag, or the pairs of two-center-two electron B-Au and Au-Ru interactions for M = Au. These transformations comprise the first synthetic route to exohedral coinage metal boryl complexes of icosahedral closo-{C2B10} clusters, which feature short Cu-B (2.029(2) Å) and Ag-B (2.182(3) Å) bonds and the shortest Au-B bond (2.027(2) Å) reported to date. The reported heterometallic complexes contain Cu(i) and Au(i) centers in uncharacteristic square-planar coordination environments. These findings pave the way to rational construction of a broader class of multimetallic architectures featuring M-B bonds.

Attempted synthesis of ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium cations

With the synthesis of ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium cations as an objective, we generated (2-lithiophenyl)diphenylphosphine and (2-lithiophenyl)di-isopropylphosphine and allowed these organolithium reagents to react with benzophenone. The resulting phosphino-triarylcarbinols were allowed to react with HBF₄ in the presence of trifluoroacetic anhydride in order to generate the corresponding cations. Instead of the targeted ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium, the cations formed in these reactions were identified as the four-membered phosphonium species 7,7-bis(phenyl)-8,8-bis(phenyl)-7-phosphoniabicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-triene (3⁺) and 7,7-bis(phenyl)-8,8-bis(isopropyl)-7-phosphoniabicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-triene (4⁺), which were both isolated as tetrafluoroborate salts. The structure of these compounds has been confirmed by X-ray analysis. These new cations are thermally unstable and isomerize into the corresponding 5,10-dihydro-5,5-diphenyl-10-phenyl-acridophosphinium (5⁺) and 5,10-dihydro-5,5-di(isopropyl)-10-phenyl-acridophosphinium (6⁺) as tetrafluoroborate salts. These reactions suggest the involvement of ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium cations, which would be obtained by dissociation of the R₃P⁺-CAr₃ bonds in 4⁺ and 5⁺This article is part of the themed issue 'Frustrated Lewis pair chemistry'.

Activation of an Au-Cl Bond by a Pendent SbIII Lewis Acid: Impact on Structure and Catalytic Activity

With the objective of identifying new coordination modes of ambiphilic ligands, we have investigated the bidentate Sb/P ligands (o-(Ph₂ P)C₆ H₄ )SbCl₂ (L^Cl ) and (o-(Ph₂ P)C₆ H₄ )SbPh₂ (L^Ph ). Reaction of these ligands with (tht)AuCl affords the monoligated species L^Cl AuCl (1) and L^Ph AuCl (2), respectively, in which the antimony centers are only weakly engaged with the coordinated gold atom. Treatment of 1 with PPh₃ induces an intramolecular transfer of a chloride ligand from gold to antimony to form the zwitterionic species o-(Cl₃ Sb)C₆ H₄ (Ph₂ P)Au(PPh₃ ) (3). Natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations show that the antimony and gold centers are involved in weak Sb→Au and Au→Sb interactions, the latter reflecting the Lewis acidity of the pendent antimony group. Finally, we demonstrate that the ability of the antimony center in 1 to abstract a gold-bound chloride in the presence of a Lewis basic substrate may be utilized to activate the gold center for the electrophilic cycloisomerization of propargylic amides.
