Abstract
Achieving high-efficiency red phosphorescence remains a significant challenge, especially in cyclometalated platinum complexes where radiative rates are inherently slower than their iridium counterparts. In this work, six red-emitting cyclometalated platinum complexes of the formula Pt(C∧N)[(Ar)acNac] (C∧N is the cyclometalating ligand, and (Ar)acNac is an aryl-substituted β-ketoiminate ancillary ligand) were synthesized and characterized. Two C∧N ligands were employed, 1-phenylisoquinoline (piq) and its cyano-substituted analogue 1-phenylisoquinoline-4-carbonitrile (piqCN), which both result in red phosphorescence in cyclometalated platinum complexes. These were paired with three (Ar)acNac ligands that are sterically differentiated via the N-aryl group, which is phenyl in the unsubstituted analogue (Ph)acNac and 2,6-dimethylphenyl or 2,6-diisopropylphenyl in the sterically encumbered analogues. An in-depth photophysical analysis of all compounds was performed and compared to the related compounds with the acetylacetonate (acac) ancillary ligand. While quantum yields are modest in the unsubstituted (Ph)acNac complexes, steric bulk on the β-ketoiminate has a pronounced effect on the excited-state dynamics and can lead to photoluminescence quantum yields of more than 0.50 in both solution and transparent polymer films, with the photoluminescence λmax ∼ 630 nm. We show that both steric effects on the electron-rich β-ketoiminate ancillary ligands and the cyano substituent on the cyclometalating ligand play a role in achieving high-efficiency phosphorescence in the red region.

Abstract
We present the synthesis and characterization of two series of mononuclear heteroleptic anionic cycloplatinated(II) complexes featuring terminal cyanide ligand Q+[Pt(C^N)(p-MeC6H4)(CN)]- [C^N = benzoquinolate (bzq), Q+ = K+ 1 and NBu4+ 4; 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy), Q+ = K+ 2 and NBu4+ 5 and 2-(2,4- difluorophenyl)pyridinate (dfppy), Q+ = K+ 3 and NBu4+ 6] and a series of symmetrical binuclear complexes (NBu4)[Pt2(C^N)2(p-MeC6H4)2(μ-CN)] (C^N = bzq 7, ppy 8, dfppy 9). Compounds 5, 6, and 7-9 were further determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. There are no apparent intermolecular Pt···Pt interactions owing to the presence of bulky NBu4+ counterion. Slow crystallization of K[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)(CN)] 2 in acetone/hexane evolves with formation of yellow crystals, which were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods as the salt complex {[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)(CN)]2K3(OCMe2)4(μ-OCMe2)2}[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)(μ-CN)Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)]·2acetone (10), featuring the binuclear anionic unit 8- neutralized by an hybrid inorganic-organometallic coordination polymer {[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)(CN)]2K3(OCMe2)4(μ-OCMe2)2}+. The photophysical properties of all compounds were recorded in powder, polystyrene film, and solution states with a quantum yield up to 21% for 9 in the solid state. All complexes displayed bright emission in rigid media, and for the interpretation of their absorption and emission properties, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations were applied.

Abstract
Bioimaging of subcellular organelles such as mitochondria is crucial for detecting physiological abnormalities induced by fluctuations in the levels of various analytes. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of two novel water-soluble cationic Lewis acid triarylborane-triarylamine conjugates 1 and 2. The optical characteristics of 1 and 2 and their precursor compounds BTPA-NMe2 and BTPA-2NMe2 were evaluated, which show similar absorption and fluorescence spectra, with 1 and 2 exhibiting higher quantum yields of 0.73 and 0.64, respectively, than those of the precursors BTPA-NMe2 and BTPA-2NMe2, indicating the partial disruption of the ICT process and the activation of alternative emission bands in 1 and 2. The live cell imaging ability of compound 2 was examined in HeLa cells using a confocal microscope. Moreover, mitochondrial internalisation using compound 2 was effective and it was found to have high photostability under UV light conditions. Furthermore, compound 2 demonstrated an evident colorimetric response with a colour change to dark yellow in aqueous environments, indicating that it could be used for anion sensing. The spectral changes were observed in UV-visible and fluorescence titration experiments, which were strongly supported by DFT calculations. In short, compound 2 synthesized by us can be exclusively utilized for the selective localization of mitochondria with less cytotoxicity and shows excellent colorimetric response to aqueous inorganic fluoride at levels as low as 0.1 ppm with high selectivity.

Abstract
Two series of cyclometalated PtII and IrIII complexes with general formulas [Pt(pbt){PPh2(R)-κP,O}] (2a-2c) and [Ir(pbt)2{PPh2(R)-κP,O}] (3a-3c), where Hpbt is 2-phenylbenzothiazol and PPh2(R) is a diphenylphosphino donor functionalized deprotonated acid (R = o-C6H4CO2a, o-C6H4SO3b, CH2CH2CO2c) are presented. The structures of 1, 2a-2c, 3a and 3b were confirmed by single X-ray diffraction analyses, and the intermolecular interactions in 2a were studied using Hirshfeld surface analysis and non-covalent interaction (NCI) methods on its X-ray structure. Their photophysical properties were investigated by absorption and emission analyses [CH2Cl2, solid (298, 77 K) and doped polystyrene (PS) films], supported by TD-DFT calculations on 1, 2a-2c and 3a. The PtII complexes exhibit bright phosphorescence in the region 525-542 nm, ascribed to a mixed 3IL/3MLCT excited state with a predominant 3IL contribution. The IrIII derivatives (3a-3c) show orange photoluminescence (535-584 nm, 298 K), blue shifted at 77 K (527-560 nm), originated from the admixture of 3IL/3MLCT/3LLCT excited states. Interestingly, the photoluminescence quantum yields of the Pt complexes 2a-2c (ϕ = 46.5-66.5%) in PS films are remarkably higher than those of the corresponding iridium complexes (ϕ = 17.3-32%) and the precursor 1 (ϕ = 17%). The calculated 3MC-3IL/3MLCT energy gap for 2a and 3a accounts for the higher quantum yield of the Pt in relation to the Ir complex.

Abstract
A series of new luminescent cycloplatinated(II) complexes (5a-8a and 5b-8b) with formulas Pt(bt)(N^O) and Pt(bt)(N^P) have been synthesized [bt = phenylbenzothiazole, N^O = (2-(1H-benzimidazole)-phenyl)diphenylphosphine oxide derivatives for 1a-4a and N^P = (2-(1H-benzimidazole)-phenyl)diphenylphosphine derivatives for 1b-4b]. The crystal structures of the complexes show distorted square planar geometries around the platinum centers. There are no obvious π-π and Pt-Pt intermolecular interactions in the crystal lattice due to the presence of sterically bulky ancillary ligands. Consequently, these complexes exhibit structured monomeric emissions in the range of 527-540 nm in CH2Cl2 solution. The photoluminescent quantum yields of Pt(bt)(N^O) (5a-8a) in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature are higher than those of Pt(bt)(N^P) (5b-8b). The above result is well consistent with the crystal structural characteristics of the complexes. The structured emission with microsecond radiative lifetimes and the result of TD-DFT calculations indicate that the emissions of these complexes are mainly attributed to a mixed 3LC-MLCT state.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and the characterization of a new cationic iridium(III) complex featuring two 1-(p-methoxyphenyl)-5-methoxybenzimidazole cyclometallating ligands and a dimethylbipyridine ancillary ligand. The complex has been fully characterized by 1D and 2D NMR (1H, 13C, 19F and 31P), elemental analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). The photoluminescence studies performed in a solution, on amorphous powder and on crystals revealed an unexpected behavior. Indeed, the emission spectra observed in both solution (CH2Cl2) and amorphous powder samples are centered at around 580 nm, whereas in crystals the emission displays a large hypsochromic shift of ∼800 cm-1 (λem = 558 nm). X-ray diffraction experiments, photophysical studies and DFT calculations allow for rationalizing the hypsochromic shift.

Abstract
Platinum(II) compounds were synthesized with both chelate cyclometalated ligands and chelate diphosphine ligands. The cyclometalated ligands include phenylpyridine and a benzothiophene-containing ligand. The three new benzothiophene compounds were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS), and photophysical measurements. In the case of one compound, L1-DPPM, the structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structural coherence of the noncrystalline emissive solid state was measured by X-ray total scattering real space pair distribution function analysis. Quantum yield values of all of the platinum compounds measured in the solid state and in PMMA films were much greater than in solution.

Abstract
A variety of π-electronic ion-pairing assemblies can be constructed by combining anion complexes of π-electronic systems and countercations. In this study, a series of anion-responsive π-electronic molecules, dipyrrolyldiketone PtII complexes containing a phenylpyridine ligand, were synthesized. The resulting PtII complexes exhibited phosphorescence emission, with higher emission quantum yields (0.30-0.42) and microsecond-order lifetimes, and solution-state anion binding, as revealed by our spectroscopic analyses. These PtII complexes displayed solid-state ion-pairing assemblies, exhibiting various anion-binding modes, which derived from pyrrole-inverted and pyrrole-non-inverted conformations, and packing structures, with the contribution of charge-by-charge assemblies, which were dependent on the substituents in the PtII complexes and the geometries and electronic states of their countercations.

Abstract
Novel bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(ii) derivatives having 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boryl]phenyl (ZnBph) or 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boryl]-2,3,5,6-tetramethylphenyl groups (ZnBdu) at the 5-position of the dipyrrinato ligands were designed and synthesized. In ZnBph with the smaller dipyrrinate–arylene and arylene–dimesitylboryl dihedral angles, an intramolecular charge transfer arising from the presence of the vacant p orbital on the boron atom participates in the ππ* excited state in character in contrast to the pure ππ* excited state of ZnBdu. The synergistic ππ*/ILCT excited state was weakly fluorescent, and the fluorescence was enhanced upon binding of fluoride to the boron atom. Electronic interactions between a bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(ii) and arylborane moieties were successfully tuned by a structure of bridging arylene groups. The excited state of a phenylene bridged complex was best characterized by the synergistic ππ*/ILCT.![]()

Abstract
Primary amines and benzothiophene-3-carboxaldehyde were reacted to give four large, bulky imine ligands. These imine ligands were reacted with a tetramethyl platinum dimer and by heteroatom-assisted C-H activation, both monometalated compounds and bismetalated compounds were synthesized. In all cases, five-membered platinacycles were formed. The compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, and one bismetalated compound was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The UV-vis absorption and emission spectra and the excited-state lifetimes were recorded for these complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT calculations were performed to aid in the assignment of the absorption and emission spectra of the newly synthesized complexes.

Abstract
Herein, we report a series of unsymmetrical bispyrazolate-type PtII compounds that exhibit mesomorphism at low temperatures and photophysical multi-stimuli-responsive properties. These PtII compounds show a great ability to be self-assembled by intermolecular Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt interactions in the solid state, so generating a columnar stacking of molecules that is responsible for the formation of the mesophases. By controlling the nature of the molecular assembly through external stimuli such as the temperature, the pressure, or the presence of vapours or solvents, it is possible to modulate the luminescence behaviour of these materials. The PtII monomers emit a greenish light, whereas aggregation of molecules produces a redshifted emission. These metallomesogens also show a high stability and successive grinding/fuming cycles can be performed without degradation of the sample. The application of these materials is very attractive as rewritable luminescent platforms, and their use is already demonstrated.

Abstract
A novel trisarylborane-Bi(III) complex, tris(4-(dimesitylboryl)phenyl)bismuthine [Bi(PhBMes2 )3 ], in which (Ph = phenyl, and Mes = mesityl), was synthesized via the reaction of bismuth (III) chloride (BiCl3 ) with three equivalents of lithiated (4-bromophenyl)- dimesitylborane [BrPhBMes2 ]. The new trisarylbismuthine was characterized by elemental analysis, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and NMR (1 H and 13 C) spectroscopy. The molecular structure of Bi(PhBMes2 )3 in the solid state was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which showed short intermolecular C-H···H-C contact. The complex is a fluorescent emitter (λmax = 395 nm) at room temperature and a phosphorescent emitter (λmax = 423 nm) at 77 K, which displayed a long lifetime of 495 ms. The UV-vis transitions were investigated using density function theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations. Natural bond orbital analysis showed that the bismuth (III) center was mainly Lewis acidic in nature.

Abstract
We report a series of room temperature phosphorescent compounds 1-6 composed of triarylborane (TAB) and cyclometallated iridium complexes. The optical characteristics such as energy of transition and luminescence quantum yield of these compounds can be conveniently fine-tuned by judiciously varying the cyclometallating ligand and the spacer between boron and iridium centers. Compounds 1-6 exhibit bright phosphorescence with the emission color ranging from green to red under a N2 atmosphere. A maximum quantum yield of 0.95 was observed for complex 2. Complexes 1-6 exhibit a rare type of dual emission from singlet and triplet excited states under ambient conditions. The experimental observations are well supported by the theoretical calculations.

Abstract
Novel hetero-binuclear platinum complexes (HBC-Pt(II)-M(II), M = Ca(II), Mg(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II)) have been synthesized by the reaction of the corresponding precursors [Pt(ppy)(μ-Cl)]2 with (2-(1 H-tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl)diphenylphosphine oxide (TTPPO). The X-ray structures of the complexes show that two ancillary ligands TTPPO in the square-planar Pt(II) moiety act as a quadridentate chelating agent for the other metal center, eventually forming a distorted octahedral configuration. There are no significant π-π interactions and Pt-M metallophilic interactions in the crystal lattice, due to the steric hindrances associated with the rigid octahedral structure together with the bulky TTPPO. Consequently, HBC-Pt-M complexes show monomer emission characteristics with quantum yields up to 59% in powder, suggesting their great potential for practical applications. DFT and TD-DFT calculations on HBC-Pt-Zn reveal that the phosphorescence can be ascribed to intraligand charge transfer (3ILCT) combined with some metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) in the Pt(ppy) moiety, which is consistent with the observations from the photophysical investigations.

Abstract
We report a novel example of supramolecular cages containing a Lewis acidic trigonal boron center. Self-assembly of the tris(pyridyl)borane donor 1 with diruthenium (2) or platinum (3), as an electron acceptor, furnished boron-containing trigonal prismatic supramolecular cages 5 and 6, which were characterized by 1H NMR and electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The molecular structure of cage 5 was confirmed as a trigonal prismatic cage with an inner dimension of about 400 Å3. The fluoride binding properties of borane ligand 1 and Pt cage 6 were studied. UV/vis absorption titration studies demonstrated that the boron center of cage 6 undergoes strong binding interaction with the fluoride ion, with an estimated binding constant of 1.3 × 1010 M-2 in acetone based on the 1:2 binding isotherm. The binding was also confirmed by 1H NMR titration. Photoluminescence titration studies showed that cage 6 emitted borane-centered fluorescence (τ = 2.21 ns), which was gradually quenched upon addition of fluoride. When excess fluoride was added to a solution of 6, however, dissociation of the pyridyl ligand from the Pt(II) center was observed.

Abstract
The advances in boron incorporated organics have captured overwhelming interest on account of their outstanding properties and promising applications in various fields. Mostly, triarylborane compounds (TAB) are exploited as sensors of F- and CN- anions at the expense of the intrinsic Lewis acidic nature of boron. New molecular probes 1 and 2 for detection of toxic thiophenol were designed by conjugating highly fluorescent borylanilines with the luminescent quencher 2,4-dinitrobenzene based sulfonamides (DNBS), wherein the electrophilicity of the DNBS moiety has been modulated by fine-tuning the intrinsic Lewis acidity of boron. The interplay between PET (photoinduced electron transfer) and ICT have been employed for developing the TAB tethered turn-on fluorescent sensor for thiophenol with high selectivity for the first time. The newly developed probes showed very fast response toward thiophenol (within ∼5 min) with limits of detection (LOD) lying in the micromolar range, clearly pointing to their potential. Further, compounds 1 and 2 were explored for detecting thiophenol in the intracellular environment by discriminating biothiols. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were performed to support the sensing mechanism.

Abstract
Salen-based indium triads, [{(3-tBu)2-(5-Mes2B)2-salen}In-Me] (1) and [{(3-tBu)2-(5-Mes2Bphenyl)2-salen}In-Me] (2), bearing triarylborane (TAB) units were prepared and fully characterised by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The major absorption bands of 1 and 2 appeared in the region centred at 347 nm and 374 nm, respectively, and the intense emission spectra were observed in the sky blue (λem = 491 nm for 1) and bluish-green (λem = 498 nm for 2) regions, respectively. The solvatochromism effects in various organic solvents and computational calculation results strongly suggested that these absorption and emission features are mainly attributed to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transitions between the salen ligand moieties and the TAB units. Furthermore, UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) titration experiments by the addition of fluoride anions demonstrated ratiometric quenching patterns in both the absorption and emission spectra, indicating that binding of the fluoride anion to the boron centres interrupts these ICT transitions in each compound. Interestingly, both triads exhibited a gradual red-shifted response in each emission spectrum upon the addition of the fluoride anions, resulting in a dramatic colour-change to yellow. The computational calculation results of the S1 states revealed that these emission-colour change properties arise from the elevation of HOMO levels, which are mainly localised on the TAB moieties, resulting from the fluoride anion binding to the borane centres.

Abstract
Luminescent organometallic platinum(II) compounds are of interest as phosphors for organic light emitting devices. Their emissive properties can be tuned by variation of the ligands or by specific electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituents. Different ancillary ligands can have a profound impact on the emission color and emission efficiency of these complexes. We studied the influence of sterically hindered, aryl-substituted β-diketonates on the emission properties of C^C* cyclometalated complexes, employing the unsubstituted methyl-phenyl-imidazolium ligand. The quantum yield was significantly enhanced by changing the auxiliary ligand from acetylacetonate, where the corresponding platinum(II) complex shows only a very weak emission, to mesityl (mes) or duryl (dur) substituted acetylacetonates. The new complexes show very efficient emission with quantum yields >70% in the sky-blue spectral region (480 nm) and short decay times (<3 μs).

Abstract
Novel salen-Al/triarylborane dyad complexes were prepared and characterized with their corresponding mononuclear compounds. The UV-vis and photoluminescence experiments for dyads exhibited photoinduced energy transfer from borane to the salen-Al moiety in an intramolecular manner. Theoretical calculation and fluoride titration results further supported these intramolecular energy-transfer features.
