Abstract
By incorporating photoreactive anthracene moieties into binuclear Dy2O2 motifs, we obtain two new compounds with the formulas [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(dmpma)4] (1) and [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(dmpma)2(CH3CN)2] (2), where HL is 4-methyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol and dmpma is dimethylphosphonomethylanthracene. Compound 1 contains face-to-face π-π interacted anthracene groups that meet the Schmidt rule for a [4 + 4] photocycloaddition reaction, while stacking of the anthracene groups in compound 2 does not meet the Schmidt rule. Compound 1 undergoes a reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transformation upon UV-light irradiation and thermal annealing, forming a one-dimensional coordination polymer of [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(dmpma)2(dmpma2)]n (1UV). The process is concomitant with changes in the magnetic dynamics and photoluminescent properties. The spin-reversal energy barrier is significantly increased from 1 (55.9 K) to 1UV (116 K), and the emission color is changed from bright yellow for 1 to weak blue for 1UV. This is the first binuclear lanthanide complex that exhibits synergistic photocontrollable magnetic dynamics and photoluminescence. Ab initio calculations are conducted to understand the magnetostructural relationships of compounds 1, 1UV, and 2.

Abstract
Starting from a dinuclear complex {Gd2(L)2(NO3)4(H2O)2}·2(CH3CN) (1) based on 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (HL), a nonanuclear cluster {Gd9(L)4(μ4-OH)2(μ3-OH)8(μ2-OCH3)4(NO3)8 (H2O)8}(OH)·2H2O (2) was obtained via modulating the amount of the ligand and base. Both of them have been structurally and magnetically characterized. Complex 1 decorates the Gd2 core bridged by double μ2-phenoxyl oxygen atoms and coordinated neutral CH3CN molecules, while 2 features the Gd9 core with a sandglass-like topology. Magnetic investigations reveal that the weaker antiferromagnetic interactions between adjacent metal ions exist in complex 2 than in 1, which is in agreement with the theoretical results. Meanwhile, the magnetocaloric effect with a maximum -ΔS m value changes from 27.32 to 40.60 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K and 7 T.

Abstract
The work in this report describes the syntheses, crystal structures, dc/ac magnetic behaviour, and theoretical calculations (both ab initio CASSCF and DFT) of three defect dicubane/planar butterfly type tetradysprosium(III) compounds of compositions [DyIII4L4(μ3-OH)2(carboxylate)2(dmf)2] (carboxylate = formate (1), acetate (2), propionate (3)), where H2L = 2-(2-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzylideneamino)phenol. In the butterfly type structures, two DyIII centres (Dyb) occupy the body positions while two other (Dyw) units occupy the wing positions. SHAPE analyses reveal that the coordination geometries of the Dyb and Dyw centres, both octacoordinated, are triangular dodecahedron (TDD) and square antiprism (SAPR), respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements give an indication of weak antiferromagnetic interactions and variable-field magnetization measurements reveal strong anisotropy in all the three compounds. The variable-temperature/frequency in-phase/out-of-phase AC susceptibility data reveal that all these three compounds are SMMs with two relaxation channels under zero dc field; slow relaxation (SR) and fast relaxation (FR) processes could be assigned to the SAPR (Dyw) and TDD (Dyb) metal centres, respectively. The simulated Ueff and τ0 values are: 49.0 cm-1 and 1.76 × 10-7 s for 1, 30.3 cm-1 and 1.51 × 10-8 s for 2 and 23.4 cm-1 and 9.64 × 10-7 s for 3. Furthermore, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO calculations reveal that the ground state of DyIII centres are axial in nature with a dominating contribution from mJ = |±15/2>. The magnetization relaxation occurs via the first excited KD resulting in the large computed blocking barrier of Dyw (SAPR) centres compared to that of the Dyb (TDD) centres which corroborates the experimental measurements. The exchange parameters obtained from DFT calculations are generally in line with those obtained from the fitting of χMT vs. T in POLY_ANISO calculations. Interesting structural and magneto-structural correlations have been found, which are the major outcomes of this investigation.

Abstract
The triangulo-{Er3} complex [Er3Cl(o-van)3(OH)2(H2O)5]Cl3·nH2O (n = 9.4; H(o-van) = o-vanillin) (1) was generated by an in situ method. The isolated Er(iii) complex 1 was characterized by elemental analysis and molecular spectroscopy. The results of single crystal X-ray diffraction studies have shown that 1 is built up of trinuclear [Er3Cl(o-van)3(OH)2(H2O)5]3+ complex cations, chloride anions and water solvate molecules. Within the complex cation the three Er(iii) central atoms are placed at the apexes of a triangle which are bridged by three (o-van)- ligands with additional chelating functions and two μ3-OH- ligands. Additionally five aqua and one chlorido ligands complete the octa-coordination of the three Er(iii) atoms. AC susceptibility measurements reveal that the compound exhibits slow magnetic relaxation with two relaxation modes.

Abstract
We hereby report a series of near-linear trinuclear [Zn2LnIII(HL)4(CH3COO)]·(NO3)2 (where LnIII = La (1-La), Ce (2-Ce), Nd (3-Nd), Sm (4-Sm), Tb (5-Tb), and Dy (6-Dy)) complexes with Schiff base ligand (H2L). Magnetization relaxation dynamic studies on complexes 2-Ce, 5-Tb, and 6-Dy reveal the existence of well resolved frequency dependent zero-field out-of-phase χ''M signals, which is an indicator of a typical single-ion magnet behavior observed only for complex 6-Dy with Ueff = 43.7 K (τ0 = 2.42 × 10-6 s). The presence of two Zn(II) ions near the coordination geometry of Dy(III) ion in 6-Dy is likely to keep the first excited mJ levels significantly away from the ground state mJ level and is responsible for the observation of zero field slow magnetic relaxation behavior. The data collected in the presence of a magnetic field of Hdc = 2 kOe enhances the energy barrier by two-fold (88.63 K, τ0 = 1.36 × 10-7 s) in 6-Dy, suggesting the presence of QTM at zero field along with other under barrier relaxations, such as the Raman process. On the other hand, complex 2-Ce shows field induced slow relaxation of magnetization behavior with an effective energy barrier of 12.24 K (τ0 = 1.89 × 10-4 s). The CASSCF/SO-RASSI/SINGLE_ANISO based ab initio calculations using MOLCAS 8.0 code further rationalized our experimentally observed magnetization dynamics.

Abstract
Two new dimeric dysprosium(III) complexes, [Dy2(HL)2(SCN)2]·2CH3CN (1) and [Dy2(HL)2(NO3)2]·2CH3CN·2H2O (2), have been assembled using the H3L multidentate ligand (H3L = 2,2'-((((2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(methylene))bis((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl))bis(methylene))diphenol). The use of different coordination anions for the two complexes results in distinct coordination geometries of the metal sites. The Dy centers in complexes 1 and 2 display capped octahedron and triangular dodecahedron coordination geometries, respectively. Consequently, the two compounds exhibit distinct dc and ac magnetic properties. Complex 1 behaves as a single molecule magnet (SMM) while no SMM behavior is observed for complex 2. Although complexes 1 and 2 possess a similar core of Dy2O2, their different coordination anions lead to two distinct magnetic interactions, namely ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. Ab initio calculations reveal that these interactions may result from strong intramolecular dipolar couplings that are ferromagnetic for 1 but antiferromagnetic for 2, while exchange couplings are antiferromagnetic in both cases.

Abstract
A dinuclear dysprosium cluster [Dy2(NO3)4(H2O)2(L)2]·2CH3CN was successfully prepared by employing HL (HL = 2,6-dimethoxyphenol) and Dy(NO3)3·6H2O in a mixture of CH3OH and CH3CN. The conversion of this Dy2 compound by reaction with additional deprotonated ligand generated a Dy9 cluster [Dy9(μ4-OH)2(μ3-OH)8(μ2-OCH3)4(NO3)8(H2O)8(L)4](OH)·2H2O with the well-known "diabolo" topology. Magnetic investigation revealed that both of the clusters exhibit typical SMM characteristics, and variable magnetic relaxation with the energy barrier changing from 217.87 K to 9.24 K along with the transition from a dinuclear dysprosium cluster to a nonanuclear one. Ab initio calculations further confirm the corresponding structure-activity relationships that originate the different magnetic behaviours. This design may afford a feasible strategy for modulating the magnetic relaxation dynamics of polynuclear systems.

Abstract
In this work, we first synthesized a Zn-Dy complex, [Zn6Dy2(L)6(tea)2(CH3OH)2]·6CH3OH·8H2O (H2L = N-3-methoxysalicylidene-2-amino-3-hydroxypyridine, teaH3 = triethanolamine, 1), by employing H2L, anhydrous ZnCl2, and Dy(NO3)3·5H2O reacting with auxiliary ligand teaH3 in the mixture of CH3OH and DMF. When teaH3 and the solvent CH3OH in the reaction system of 1 were replaced by the auxiliary ligand 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (pdmH2) and the solvent MeCN, another Zn-Dy complex, [Zn4Dy4(L)6(pdm)2(pdmH)4]·10CH3CN·5H2O (2), was obtained. For 1, its crystal structure can be viewed as a dimer of two Zn3DyIII units. However, for 2, four DyIII form a zigzag arrangement, and each of its terminals linked two ZnII ions. Interestingly, although the structural topologies of 1 and 2 are different, the coordination geometries of DyIII in 1 and 2 are all triangular dodecahedron (TDD-8). The difference is that the continuous shape measure (CShM) values of DyIII in 1 are larger than the corresponding values in 2. Magnetic investigation revealed that the diluted sample 1@Y exhibits two magnetic relaxation processes, while 2 only exhibits a single relaxation process. Ab initio calculations indicated that, in the crystal lattice of 1, two complexes exhibiting slightly different CShM values of DyIII result in the double relaxation behavior of 1@Y. However, for 2, one of two DyIII fragments possesses a fast quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), resulting in its magnetic process presented at T < 1.8 K, so 2 exhibits single relaxation behavior. More importantly, the theoretical calculations also clearly indicated that the weak ligation at equatorial sites of DyIII in 1 and 2 ensure 1@Y and 2 possess SMM behavior, although the coordination geometry of DyIII (TDD-8) in 1 and 2 severely deviates from the ideal polyhedron and its axial symmetry is low.

Abstract
Trinuclear lanthanoid clusters have been synthesised and investigated as toroidal spin systems. A pyridyl functionalised β-diketonate, 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione (o-dppdH) has been used to synthesise a family of clusters of the form [Dy3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl2(H2O)4]Cl2·7H2O (1), [Tb3(o-dppd)3(μ3-OH)2(CH3CH2OH)3Cl3][Tb3(o-dppd)3(μ3-OH)2(H2O)(CH3CH2OH)2Cl3]Cl2·H2O (2), [Ho3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl(H2O)5]Cl3·3H2O (3) and [Er3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl2(H2O)3(CH3OH)]Cl2·3H2O·CH3OH (4). Despite the previous occurrence of this structural motif in the literature, these systems have not been widely investigated in terms of torodic behaviour. Magnetic studies were used to further characterise the complexes. DC susceptibility studies support weak antiferromagnetic exchange in the complexes. Slow magnetic relaxation behaviour is observed in the dynamic AC magnetic studies for complex 1. Theoretical studies predict that complex 1 and 3 have a non-magnetic ground state based on a toroidal arrangement of spins. Changes to the coordination environment in 2 do not support a toroic spin state. The prolate nature of the ErIII centres in complex 4 and large transverse anisotropy do not support the toroidal arrangement of lanthanoid spins in the complex.

Abstract
The breakthrough in Ln(III)-based SMMs with Schiff base ligands have been occurred for the last decade on account of their magnetic behavior, anisotropy and relaxation pathways. Herein, we review the synthetic strategy, from a structural point of view and magnetic properties of mono, di, tri and polynuclear Ln(III)-based single-molecule magnets mainly with Schiff bases of Salicylaldehyde origin. Special attention has been given to some important breakthroughs that are changing the perspective of this field with a special emphasis on slow magnetic relaxation. An overview of 50 Ln(III)-Schiff base complexes with SMM behavior, covering the period 2008–2020, which have been critical in understanding the magnetic interactions between the Ln(III)-centers, are presented and discussed in detail.

Abstract
Although ab initio CASSCF calculations yield a good numerical estimate of barrier height for magnetisation reversal for mononuclear Dy(iii) SIMs, obtaining a reliable value for higher nuclearity clusters such as {Dy2} are challenging. By analysing ab initio computed data of thirty-one different {Dy2} SMMs, we propose a model equation that relates the calculated barrier heights to the experimental values and offers a viable way to predict the barrier heights in {Dy2} SMMs.

Abstract
Six dimetallic lanthanide complexes, [Ln2(L')(acac)4] (1Dy-3Gd) (Ln = Dy (1Dy), Tb (2Tb) and Gd (3Gd)) and [Ln2(L')(tfac)4] (4Dy-6Gd) (Ln = Dy (4Dy), Tb (5Tb) and Gd (6Gd)) (H2L' = 1,9-dichloro-3,7,11,15-tetraaza-1,9(1,3)-dibenzenacyclohexadecaphane-2,10-diene-1,9-diol), have been synthesized by the reaction of lanthanide nitrates with the HL ligand in the presence of acetylacetonate (acac) (or trifluoroacetylacetonate (tfac) and triethylamine (HL = 4-chloro-2,6-bis(-((3-((3-(dimethylamino)propyl)amino)propyl)imino)methyl)phenol). Ln-Assisted modification of the Schiff base HL occurred and led to the formation of a new macrocyclic ligand (H2L'). X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that the LnIII ions of complexes 1Dy-6Gd are all eight-coordinated in a square antiprismatic geometry with D4d local symmetry. Magnetic measurements of these complexes revealed that 1Dy and 4Dy show single-molecule magnet behaviour with energy barriers of 66.7 and 79.0 K, respectively, under a zero direct magnetic field. The orientations of the magnetic axes and crystal field parameters were obtained from theoretical calculations and an electrostatic model. The magneto-structural correlations of SMMs 1Dy and 4Dy are further discussed in detail.

Abstract
To explore the influences of the subtle structural variations in the ligand backbones on the single-molecule magnetic properties of dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes, three ligands-H2 L1 (H2 L1 =N1 ,N3 -bis(salicylaldehyde)diethylenetriamine), H2 L2 (H2 L2 =N1 ,N3 -bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine), and H2 L3 (H2 L3 =N1 ,N3 -bis(5-chlorosalicyladehyde)diethylenetriamine)-were synthesized and employed to prepare the expected dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes. The three ligands differ in terms of the substituents at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde moieties. The reactions of Dy(NO3 )3 ⋅6 H2 O, pivalic acid, and the ligands H2 L1 , H2 L2 , and H2 L3 generated complexes with the formulae [Dy2 (L1 )2 (piv)2 ] (1), [Dy2 (L2 )2 (piv)2 ] (2), and [Dy2 (L3 )2 (piv)2 ]⋅ 2 MeCN (3), respectively. The purposeful attachment of the functional groups with varied sizes at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde backbones resulted in slight differences in the Dy-O-Dy bond angles and the Dy⋅⋅⋅Dy bond lengths in 1-3; consequently, the three complexes exhibited distinct magnetic properties. They all showed slow magnetization relaxation with energy barriers of 40.32 (1), 31.67 (2), and 33.53 K (3). Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on complexes 1-3 to rationalize the slight discrepancy observed in the magnetic behavior. The calculated results satisfactorily explained the experimental outcomes.
