Crystal Structures of Two New Gold–Copper Bimetallic Nanoclusters: CuxAu25–x(PPh3)10(PhC2H4S)5Cl22+ and Cu3Au34(PPh3)13(tBuPhCH2S)6S23+

Tailoring sensitization properties and improving near-infrared photon upconversion performance through alloying in superatomic molecular Au25 nanoclusters

Noble-metal nanoclusters (NCs) protected by organic ligands have recently come to the forefront as potent triplet sensitizers for photon upconversion (UC) via triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA), owing to their capacity for atomic-level photophysical property customization. Among these, the rod-shaped bi-icosahedral [Au25(PPh3)10(S-C2H4Ph)5Cl2]2+ (Au-rod) NC is a particularly iconic superatomic molecular NC, recently identified as a near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing sensitizer for TTA-UC. In this study, we synthesized Cu-doped NCs, [Au25-xCux(PPh3)10(S-C2H4Ph)5Cl2]2+ (AuCu-rod), and paired them with 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPEA) annihilator/emitter to explore the impact of Cu-doping on the triplet sensitization and NIR-UC performance. The triplet state of AuCu-rod, with lifetime of 3 μs, exhibited a modest blue shift compared to the Au-rod, resulting in the increment in the driving force for triplet energy transfer (TET) to the BPEA acceptor. The TET rate constant was determined to be 5.0 × 107 M-1 s-1, which is an order of magnitude higher than the rate constant for the Au-rod/BPEA pair. This improvement has led to a remarkable increase in the TET efficiency. Notably, the AuCu-rod/BPEA pair facilitated the efficient UC of 805 nm NIR light into 510 nm visible light, realizing a large anti-Stokes shift close to 0.9 eV. The UC internal quantum yield of this combination was determined to be 2.33 ± 0.05%, marking a fivefold enhancement over the Au-rod sensitizer (0.49%). Thus, alloying NC sensitizers offers a promising route to enhance UC performance by tuning the triplet state energy and optimizing the compatibility between the sensitizer and annihilator. Additionally, in this series of experiments, the formation of small amounts of BPEA microaggregates was observed. These aggregates did not undergo singlet fission and could retain multiple long-lived triplet excitons. This characteristic facilitated TTA among triplet excitons, resulting in efficient NIR-to-visible UC emission.

Chemical Flexibility of Atomically Precise Metal Clusters

Ligand-protected metal clusters possess hybrid properties that seamlessly combine an inorganic core with an organic ligand shell, imparting them exceptional chemical flexibility and unlocking remarkable application potential in diverse fields. Leveraging chemical flexibility to expand the library of available materials and stimulate the development of new functionalities is becoming an increasingly pressing requirement. This Review focuses on the origin of chemical flexibility from the structural analysis, including intra-cluster bonding, inter-cluster interactions, cluster-environments interactions, metal-to-ligand ratios, and thermodynamic effects. In the introduction, we briefly outline the development of metal clusters and explain the differences and commonalities of M(I)/M(I/0) coinage metal clusters. Additionally, we distinguish the bonding characteristics of metal atoms in the inorganic core, which give rise to their distinct chemical flexibility. Section 2 delves into the structural analysis, bonding categories, and thermodynamic theories related to metal clusters. In the following sections 3 to 7, we primarily elucidate the mechanisms that trigger chemical flexibility, the dynamic processes in transformation, the resultant alterations in structure, and the ensuing modifications in physical-chemical properties. Section 8 presents the notable applications that have emerged from utilizing metal clusters and their assemblies. Finally, in section 9, we discuss future challenges and opportunities within this area.

Superatomic Aromaticity in Cyclic Superatomic Molecules: Ligand-Protected Penta-Icosahedral [M@Au11]5 (M = Au, Pt) Clusters

Pure or doped gold icosahedra, which can be generally viewed as superatoms, are promising candidates for cluster-assembled structures. As the first large-scale ring-like gold cluster, the report of [Au60Se2(Ph3P)10(SeR)15]+ has arisen much interest, where its Au60 core is composed of five vertex-sharing gold icosahedra in a cyclic way. From electronic characters, this Au60 core is a 40e cyclic penta-superatom network formed by five 8e closed-shell superatoms (S2P6). When more valence electrons are introduced into the penta-superatom network by atomic doping, global delocalized bonds are induced in its bonding framework. In the 42e Au60 core of the [Au60Se2Cl15]- cluster, two extra electrons occupy one delocalized π-bonding orbital formed by super D orbitals of five superatoms, resulting in superatomic π aromaticity. In the 46e [Pt@Au11]5 core of [(Pt@Au11)5Ga2Cl15] cluster, three delocalized super-π bonds are formed, which are organized in the similar way as the aromatic C5H5- molecule. The unveiling of superatomic aromaticity promotes our understanding of the stability of cyclic superatom assemblies and extends the family of superatomic bonding patterns.

Staggered Assembly of a Dimeric Au13 Cluster: Impacts on Coupling of Geometric Isomerism

The specific states of aggregation of metal atoms in sub-nanometer-sized gold clusters are related to the different quantum confinement volumes of electrons, leading to novel optical and electronic properties. These volumes can be tuned by changing the relative positions of the gold atoms to generate isomers. Studying the isomeric gold core and the electron coupling between the basic units is fundamentally important for nanoelectronic devices and luminescence; however, appropriate cases are lacking. In this study, the structure of the first staggered di-superatomic Au25 -S was solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of Au25 -S were studied by comparing with eclipsed Au25 -E. From Au25 -E to Au25 -S, changes in the electronic structures occurred, resulting in significantly different optical absorptions originating from the coupling between the two Au13 modules. Au25 -S shows a longer electron decay lifetime of 307.7 ps before populating the lowest triplet emissive state, compared to 1.29 ps for Au25 -E. The experimental and theoretical results show that variations in the geometric isomerism lead to distinct photophysical processes owing to isomerism-dependent electronic coupling. This study offers new insights into the connection between the geometric isomerism of nanosized building blocks and the optical properties of their assemblies, opening new possibilities for constructing function-specific nanomaterials.

PtAg18 superatoms costabilized by phosphines and halides: synthesis, structure, and catalysis

Reported herein is the facial synthesis, molecular structure, and catalysis of a Pt/Ag nanocluster costabilized by organic ligands of phosphines and inorganic ligands of chlorides. The nanocluster with molecular formula of [PtAg18(dppp)6Cl8](SbF6)2 has been obtained facilely by the one pot method. The structure of the cluster could be anatomized as the stabilizaiton of PtAg12-centered icosahedral core by the metalloligand of dppp-Ag-Cl, in which Cl- not only caps the surface Ag atoms but also binds the core and surface motifs. Featuring eight free electrons in its structure, the cluster exhibits high stability. More interestingly, the exposure of surface metal sites endows the cluster with counterintutively  high catalytic activity in hydrogenation reactions.

Cd Atom Goes into the Interior of Cluster Induced by Directional Consecutive Assembly of Tetrahedral Units on an Icosahedron Kernel

"Core sliding" in metal nanoclusters drives the reconstruction of external structural units and provides an ideal platform for mapping their precise transformation mechanism and evolution pathway. However, observing the movement behavior of metal atoms in experiments is still challenging because of the uncertain stability of intermediates. In this work, a series of Au-Cd alloy nanoclusters with continuously assembled kernels (one icosahedral building block assembled with 0 to 3 tetrahedral units) were constructed. As the assembly continued, it eventually led to the Cd atom doping into the inner positions of the clusters. Importantly, the Cd doped into the interior of the cluster exhibits a different behavior than the surface or external Cd atoms (dispersion doping vs localized occupy), which provides experimental evidence of the sliding behavior in the nanocluster kernel. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that this sliding behavior in the inner sites of nanoclusters is an energetically favorable process. In addition, these Au-Cd nanoclusters exhibit tunable optical properties with different assembly patterns in their kernels.

Overall structure of Au12Ag60(S-c-C6H11)31Br9(Dppp)6: achieving a stronger assembly of icosahedral M13 units

Precise atomically assembled nanoclusters provide a great platform to elucidate the evolution of the assembly of building blocks. Herein, a large icosahedral (M₁₃)-based silver-gold alloy nanocluster [Au₁₂Ag₆₀(S-c-C₆H₁₁)₃₁Br₉(Dppp)₆]Br₂ (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) is reported. Structurally, Au₁₂Ag₆₀ consists of an Au₁₂Ag₄₀ kernel, which is viewed as the interpenetration of ten twisted complete icosahedrons (M₁₃) and two missing icosahedrons (M₁₂), and this is surrounded by a complex metal-organic shell. Benefiting from the extra doping of eight to twelve Au atoms, the octameric assembly was increased to a twelve-mer assembly. The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method with a Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) was performed to investigate the difference in the optical properties of Au₁₂Ag₆₀ and Au₈Ag₅₇. The results indicate that the difference in the amount of Au atoms results in different optical properties. Furthermore, transient absorption spectroscopy (TA) was also performed, revealing that a twelve-mer assembly greatly enhances the excited-state lifetime. The [Au₁₂Ag₆₀(S-c-C₆H₁₁)₃₁Br₉(Dppp)₆]Br₂ alloy nanocluster has provided a breakthrough in the number of icosahedral M₁₃ assemblies, i.e., achieving a twelve-mer assembly, helping to elucidate the fusion growth of M₁₃-based assembled nanoclusters as well as their geometric/electronic structure correlations, which will promote further research on the assembly of M₁₃ nano-building blocks, especially on their optical properties.

Atomically precise copper dopants in metal clusters boost up stability, fluorescence, and photocatalytic activity

The structurally precise alloy nanoclusters have been emerged as a burgeoning nanomaterial for their unique physical/chemical features. We here report a rod-like nanocluster [Au₁₂Cu₁₃(PPh₃)₁₀I₇](SbF₆)₂ (Au₁₂Cu₁₃), which was generated through a transformation of a [Au₉(PPh₃)₈]³⁺ intermediate in the presence of CuI, unveiled by time-dependent UV-vis spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. Au₁₂Cu₁₃ is comprised of two pentagonal bipyramids Au₆Cu units and a pentagonal prism Cu₁₁ unit, where the copper and gold species are presented in +1 and 0 chemical states. The Cu-dopants significantly improved the stability and fluorescence (quantum yield: ~34%, 34-folds of homo-Au₂₅(PPh₃)₁₀Br₇). The high stability of Au₁₂Cu₁₃ is attributed to the high binding energy of iodine ligands, Au-Cu synergistic effects and its 16-electon system as an 8-electron superatom dimer. Finally, the robust Au₁₂Cu₁₃ exhibited high catalytic activity (~92% conversion and ~84% methyl formate-selectivity) and good durability in methanol photo-oxidation.

Horizontal expansion of biicosahedral M13-based nanoclusters: resolving decades-long questions

For metal nanoclusters with the "cluster of clusters" intramolecular evolution pattern, most efforts have been made towards the vertical superposition of icosahedral nanobuilding blocks (e.g., from mono-icosahedral Au₁₃ to bi-icosahedral Au₂₅ and tri-icosahedral Au₃₇), while the horizontal expansion of these rod-shaped multi-icosahedral aggregates was largely neglected. We herein report the horizontal expansion of the biicosahedral M₂₅ cluster framework, yielding an [Au₁₉Ag₁₂(S-Adm)₆(DPPM)₆Cl₇]²⁺ nanocluster that contains an Au₁₃Ag₁₂ kernel and six Au₁(DPPM)₁(S-Adm)₁ peripheral wings. The structural determination of [Au₁₉Ag₁₂(S-Adm)₆(DPPM)₆Cl₇]²⁺ resolved a decades-long question towards rod-shaped multi-icosahedral aggregates: how to load bidentate phosphine and bulky thiol ligands onto the nanocluster framework? The structural comparison between [Au₁₉Ag₁₂(S-Adm)₆(DPPM)₆Cl₇]²⁺ and previously reported [Au₁₃Ag₁₂(PPh₃)₁₀Cl₈]²⁺ or [Au₁₃Ag₁₂(SR)₅(PPh₃)₁₀Cl₂]²⁺ rationalized the unique packing of Au₁(DPPM)₁(S-Adm)₁ motif structures on the surface of the former nanocluster. Overall, this work presents the horizontal expansion of rod-shaped multi-icosahedral nanoclusters, which provides new insights into the preparation of novel icosahedron-based aggregates with both vertically and horizontally growing extensions.

Insight into the Mechanism of Single-Metal-Atom Tailoring on the Surface of Au-Cu Alloy Nanoclusters

Tailoring the surface structure of nanomaterials is desirable for investigating their mechanisms and properties from a nanochemistry perspective. The modification of the surface of metal nanoparticles with a single metal atom has proven difficult, which has hindered the understanding of the contribution of different motifs in nanoclusters to their properties. Herein, we report single-metal-atom surface tailoring by thermally etching the nanocluster Au_xCu_15-x(DPPMH)₃(SPhCl₂)₉ (x = 8 or 9) to obtain Au_xCu_16-x(DPPMH)₂(DPPM)(SPhCl₂)₉ (x = 9 or 10) nanoclusters. An Au₇Cu₄ core was observed in both nanoclusters, which can be regarded as part of an icosahedron. Experiments and theoretical simulations revealed the tailoring processes of the icosahedron. Both nanoclusters displayed an NIR-II emission, and the introduction of the surface metal atom led to a red-shift in the emission band from 983 to 1025 nm. This work contributes to the development of precisely tailored nanocluster structures and provides an understanding of structure-property correlations.

Regulation of Surface Structure of [Au9Ag12(SAdm)4(Dppm)6Cl6](SbF6)3 Nanocluster via Alloying

Tailoring of specific sites on the nanocluster surface can tailor the properties of nanoclusters at the atomic level, for the in-depth understanding of structure and property relationship. In this work, we explore the regulation of surface structure of [Au₉Ag₁₂(SAdm)₄(Dppm)₆Cl₆](SbF₆)₃ nanocluster via alloying. We successfully obtained the well-determined tri-metal [Au₉Ag₈@Cu₄(SAdm)₄(Dppm)₆Cl₆](SbF₆)₃ by the reaction of [Au₉Ag₁₂(SAdm)₄(Dppm)₆Cl₆](SbF₆)₃ with the Cu^I(SAdm) complex precursor. X-ray crystallography identifies that the Cu dopants prioritily replace the position of the silver capped by Dppm ligand in the motif. The Cu doping has affected the optical properties of Au₉Ag₁₂ alloy nanocluster. DPV spectra, CD spectra and stability tests suggest that the regulation of surface structure via Cu alloying changes the electronic structure, thereby affecting the electrochemical properties, which provides insight into the regulation of surface structure of [Au₉Ag₁₂(SAdm)₄(Dppm)₆Cl₆](SbF₆)₃via alloying.

All-selenolate-protected eight-electron platinum/silver nanoclusters

The first atomically and structurally precise platinum/silver superatoms protected by Se-donor ligands were synthesized in high yield by adopting ligand replacements on [PtAg₂₀{S₂P(OⁿPr)₂}₁₂] (3) with 12 equiv. of di-alkyl diselenophosph(in)ates. Structures of [PtAg₂₀{Se₂P(OR)₂}₁₂] (R = ⁿPr (1a), ⁱPr (1b)) and [PtAg₂₀{Se₂P(CH₂CH₂Ph)₂}₁₂] (2) were accurately determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to reveal an eight-electron [Pt@Ag₁₂]⁴⁺ icosahedral core embedded within a cube of eight silver(i) atoms and wrapped into a shell of 12 diselenophosph(in)ates. While the lowest energy absorption band of the Se derivatives is red-shifted to longer wavelengths in comparison with the S analogue, it is blue-shifted in the emission spectra. Density functional theory (DFT) and TD-DFT calculations rationalize the electronic structures as those of eight-electron superatoms, with their HOMO and LUMO being the 1P and 1D levels, respectively. The two UV-visible lowest bands are associated with 1P → 1D metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) transitions. The blue shift observed for the S analogue results from a larger HOMO-LUMO gap in the case of dithiolate ligands.

Thiolate-Protected Metal Nanoclusters: Recent Development in Synthesis, Understanding of Reaction, and Application in Energy and Environmental Field

Metal nanoclusters (NCs), which are composed of about 250 or fewer metal atoms, possess great potential as novel functional materials. Fundamental research on metal NCs gradually started in the 1960s, and since 2000, thiolate (SR)-protected metal NCs have been the main metal NCs actively studied. The precise and systematic isolation of SR-protected metal NCs has been achieved in 2005. Since then, research on SR-protected metal NCs for both basic science and practical application has rapidly expanded. This review describes this recent progress in the field of SR-protected metal NCs in three areas: synthesis, understanding, and application. Specifically, the recent study of alloy NCs and connected structures composed of NCs is highlighted in the "synthesis" section, recent knowledge on the reactivity of NCs in solution is highlighted in the "understanding" section, and the applications of NCs in the energy and environmental field are highlighted in the "application" section. This review provides insight on the current state of research on SR-protected metal NCs and discusses the challenges to be overcome for further development in this field as well as the possibilities that these materials can contribute to solving the problems facing modern society.

Toward the creation of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts by controlled ligand desorption from atomically precise metal nanoclusters

Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters controlled by atomic accuracy (i. e. atomically precise metal NCs) have recently attracted considerable attention as active sites in heterogeneous catalysts. Using these atomically precise metal NCs, it becomes possible to create novel heterogeneous catalysts based on a size-specific electronic/geometrical structure of metal NCs and understand the mechanism of the catalytic reaction easily. However, to create high-performance heterogeneous catalysts using atomically precise metal NCs, it is often necessary to remove the ligands from the metal NCs. This review summarizes previous studies on the creation of heterogeneous catalysts using atomically precise metal NCs while focusing on the calcination as a ligand-elimination method. Through this summary, we intend to share state-of-art techniques and knowledge on (1) experimental conditions suitable for creating high-performance heterogeneous catalysts (e.g., support type, metal NC type, ligand type, and calcination temperature), (2) the mechanism of calcination, and (3) the mechanism of catalytic reaction over the created heterogeneous catalyst. We also discuss (4) issues that should be addressed in the future toward the creation of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts using atomically precise metal NCs. The knowledge and issues described in this review are expected to lead to clear design guidelines for the creation of novel heterogeneous catalysts.

Surface engineering of linearly fused Au13 units using diphosphine and Cd doping

Herein, surface engineering was delicately performed to assemble two new Au-Cd alloy nanoclusters, including [Cd2Au17(S-c-C6H11)12(DPPP)2](BPh4) and Cd2Au29(TBBT)17(DPPF)2. Both the Au13 (in Cd2Au17) and Au25 (in Cd2Au29) cores were covered by two identical Au2Cd(SR)6 motifs and two diphosphine ligands. In addition, their optical properties were explored to give clues on the kernel- and surface-dependent electronic structures.

Electron counting and bonding patterns in assemblies of three and more silver-rich superatoms

DFT calculations were carried out on a series of cluster cores, the framework of which was made of the condensation of several Pt@Ag12-centered icosahedra. Icosahedral condensations through vertex-sharing, face-sharing, and interpenetration were considered and their favored electron counts were determined from their stable closed-shell configurations. A large number of the computed assemblies of n icosahedral superatomic units can be considered as isolobal analogs of stable, closed-shell n-atom molecules, most of them obeying the octet rule. The larger the degree of fusion between icosahedra, the stronger the interaction between them. For example, it was possible to design 3-icosahedral supermolecular cores analogous to CO2, SF2, or [I3]-, but also to the not-yet-isolated cyclic O3. Supermolecules equivalent to non-stable molecules can also be designed. Indeed, differences exist between atoms and superatoms, and original icosahedra assemblies with no "molecular" analogs are also likely to exist, especially with compact structures and/or systems made of a large number of fused superatoms.

Atomically precise alloy nanoclusters: syntheses, structures, and properties

Metal nanoclusters fill the gap between discrete atoms and plasmonic nanoparticles, providing unique opportunities for investigating the quantum effects and precise structure-property correlations at the atomic level. As a versatile strategy, alloying can largely improve the physicochemical performances compared to the corresponding homo-metal nanoclusters, and thus benefit the applications of such nanomaterials. In this review, we highlight the achievements of atomically precise alloy nanoclusters, and summarize the alloying principles and fundamentals, including the synthetic methods, site-preferences for different heteroatoms in the templates, and alloying-induced structure and property changes. First, based on various Au or Ag nanocluster templates, heteroatom doping modes are presented. The templates with electronic shell-closing configurations tend to maintain their structures during doping, while the others may undergo transformation and give rise to alloy nanoclusters with new structures. Second, alloy nanoclusters of specific magic sizes are reviewed. The arrangement of different atoms is related to the symmetry of the structures; that is, different atoms are symmetrically located in the nanoclusters of smaller sizes, and evolve into shell-by-shell structures at larger sizes. Then, we elaborate on the alloying effects in terms of optical, electrochemical, electroluminescent, magnetic and chiral properties, as well as the stability and reactivity via comparisons between the doped nanoclusters and their homo-metal counterparts. For example, central heteroatom-induced photoluminescence enhancement is emphasized. The applications of alloy nanoclusters in catalysis, chemical sensing, bio-labeling, and other fields are further discussed. Finally, we provide perspectives on existing issues and future efforts. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive synthetic toolbox and controllable doping modes so as to achieve more alloy nanoclusters with customized compositions, structures, and properties for applications. This review is based on publications available up to February 2020.

Doping Copper Atoms into the Nanocluster Kernel: Total Structure Determination of [Cu30Ag61(SAdm)38S3](BPh4)

Doping active metal (i.e., Cu) into the kernel of noble metal nanoclusters (i.e., Au/Ag nanocluster) remains challenging in the synthesis of alloy nanoclusters. Herein, we report the synthesis and the total structure determination of a bimetallic [Ag₆₁Cu₃₀(SAdm)₃₈S₃]BPh₄ (Ag₆₁Cu₃₀) nanocluster. The Ag₆₁Cu₃₀ nanocluster is composed of an Ag₁₃@Cu₃₀ kernel which is further capped by a peripheral Ag₄₈(SAdm)₃₈S₃ shell. The icosidodecahedron Cu₃₀ middle layer connects the innermost icosahedral Ag₁₃ core and Ag atoms at the outermost Ag₄₈(SR)₃₈S₃ shell, demonstrating that the Cu atoms in the Cu₃₀ layer are in a metallic state.

Fusion growth patterns in atomically precise metal nanoclusters

Atomically precise nanoclusters of coinage metals in the 1-3 nm size regime have been intensively pursued in recent years. Such nanoclusters are attractive as they fill the gap between small molecules (<1 nm) and regular nanoparticles (>3 nm). This intermediate identity endows nanoclusters with unique physicochemical properties and provides nanochemists opportunities to understand the fundamental science of nanomaterials. Metal nanoparticles are well known to exhibit plasmon resonances upon interaction with light; however, when the particle size is downscaled to the nanocluster regime, the plasmons fade out and step-like absorption spectra characteristic of cluster sizes are manifested due to strong quantum confinement effects. Recent research has revealed that nanoclusters are commonly composed of a distinctive kernel and a surface-protecting shell (or staple-like metal-ligand motifs). Understanding the kernel configuration and evolution is one of the central topics in nanoscience research. This Review summarizes the recent progress in identifying the growth patterns of atomically precise coinage nanoclusters. Several basic kernel units have been observed, such as the M₄, M₁₃ and M₁₄ polyhedrons (where, M = metal atom). Among them, the tetrahedral M₄ and icosahedral M₁₃ units are the most common ones, which are adopted as building blocks to construct larger kernel structures via various fusion or aggregation modes, including the vertex- and face-sharing mode, the double-strand and alternate single-strand growth, and cyclic fusion of units, as well as the fcc-based cubic growth pattern. The identification of the kernel growth pathways has led to deeper understanding of the evolution of electronic structure and optic properties.

Hetero-biicosahedral [Au24Pd(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]+ nanocluster: selective synthesis and optical and electrochemical properties

A recent study implied that a hetero-biicosahedral 25-atom cluster composed of two kinds of icosahedral 13-atom clusters could serve as a molecular rectifier and dipole material. However, no hetero-biicosahedral 25-atom clusters containing three types of ligands, in this case, phosphines, halogens, and thiolates, have been reported. In this study, we selectively synthesized [Au24Pd(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]Cl (Au = gold, Pd = palladium, PPh3 = triphenylphosphine, SC2H4Ph = phenylethanethiolate, Cl = chloride), in which one Au was replaced with a Pd. The single-crystal X-ray structural analysis demonstrated that [Au24Pd(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]Cl was a hetero-biicosahedral 25-atom cluster in which the central atom of one icosahedral Au13 core was replaced by a Pd atom. Optical absorption spectroscopy suggested that the electronic structure of each individual icosahedral 13-atom core in [Au24Pd(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]+ was reasonably well maintained, similar to the case of [Au25(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]2+. Density functional theory calculation revealed that the peak splitting in the region below 2.2 eV of the optical absorption spectrum of [Au24Pd(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]+ is due to the splitting of HOMOs and also suggested that this cluster has dipole moment. Electrochemical measurements showed that [Au24Pd(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]+ was relatively stable to reduction. These results are expected to contribute to the development of molecular rectifiers and dipole materials based on hetero-biicosahedral 25-atom clusters.

X-ray crystal structure and doping mechanism of bimetallic nanocluster Au36−xCux(m-MBT)24(x= 1–3)

Combined experimental and theoretical methods have been used to explore the doping preference of Cu atoms in novel Au_36−xCu_x(m-MBT)₂₄(x= 1–3) nanoclusters.

Cyclic Pt3Ag33 and Pt3Au12Ag21 nanoclusters with M13 icosahedra as building-blocks

In this study, we obtained two new nanoclusters: Pt₃Ag₃₃ and Pt₃Au₁₂Ag₂₁, and explored the structure–activity relationship of their optical properties.
