Abstract
Located at the foot of the periodic table, uranium is a relatively underexplored element possessing rich chemistry. In addition to its high relevance to nuclear power, uranium shows promise for small molecule activation and photocatalysis, among many other powerful functions. Researchers have used metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to harness uranium's properties, and in their quest to do so, have discovered remarkable structures and unique properties unobserved in traditional transition metal MOFs. More recently, (e.g. the last 8-10 years), theoretical calculations of framework energetics have supplemented structure-property studies in uranium MOFs (U-MOFs). In this Perspective, we summarize how these budding energy-structure-property relationships in U-MOFs enable a deeper understanding of chemical phenomena, enlarge chemical space, and elevate the field to targeted, rather than exploratory, discovery. Importantly, this Perspective encourages interdisciplinary connections between experimentalists and theorists by demonstrating how these collaborations have elevated the entire U-MOF field.

Abstract
Regulating the porosity of metal phosphonate frameworks is still challenging, even though this is not an issue for carboxylate-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Quaternary ammonium cations are common template reagents widely used for structure control. However, it is not successful for uranyl phosphonate frameworks (UPFs) because the large volume sizes of templates make it challenging to enter the channels constructed by phosphonate ligands with small pore sizes and low dimensions. In this work, three new porous three-dimensional UPFs were synthesized using the phosphonate ligand and template reagents with the same geometry, namely, (TEA)2(UO2)3(TppmH4)2·2H2O (UPF-106), (TPA)2(UO2)3(TppmH4)2 (UPF-107), and (TBA)2(UO2)5(TppmH2)2(H2O)2·4H2O (UPF-108). The porosity of the UPFs in this work showed a positive relation with the sizes of the template ammonium cations. Thermogravimetric analysis and infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy were performed. The variable-temperature fluorescence spectra of the three compounds showed that the fluorescence intensity has an excellent relation to temperature with a potential application as fluorescence temperature sensors.

Abstract
Layered heterometallic 5f-3d uranyl phosphonates can exhibit unique luminescent and/or magnetic properties, but the fabrication and properties of their 2D counterparts have not been investigated. Herein we report three heterobimetallic uranyl phosphonates, namely, [(UO2 )3 M(2-pmbH)4 (H2 O)4 ] ⋅ 2H2 O [MU, M=Co(II), CoU; Mn(II), MnU; Zn(II), ZnU; 2-pmbH3 =2-(phosphonomethyl)benzoic acid]. They are isostructural and display two-dimensional layered structures where the M(II) centers are encapsulated inside the windows generated by the diamagnetic uranyl phosphonate layer. Each M(II) has an octahedral geometry filled with four water molecules in the equatorial positions and two phosphonate oxygen atoms in the axial positions. The uranium atoms adopt UO7 pentagonal bipyramidal and UO6 square bipyramidal geometries. The lattice and coordination water molecules can be released by thermal treatment and reabsorbed in a reversible manner, accompanied with changes of magnetic dynamics. Interestingly, the bulk samples of MU can be exfoliated in acetone via freezing and thawing processes forming nanosheets with single-layer or two-layer thickness (MU-ns). Magnetic studies revealed that the CoU and MnU systems exhibited field-induced slow magnetization relaxation at low temperature. Compared with crystalline CoU, the magnetic relaxation of the CoU-ns aggregates is significantly accelerated. Moreover, photoluminescence measured at 77 K showed slight red-shift of the five characteristic uranyl emission bands for ZnU-ns in comparison with those of the crystalline ZnU. This work gives the first examples of 2D materials based on 5f-3d heterometallic uranyl phosphonates and illustrates the impact of dimension reduction on their magnetic/optical properties.

Abstract
Lanthanide-uranyl phosphonates possess intriguing crystal structures and huge application prospects, but the construction of these materials remains challenging. In this work, we demonstrate that new uranyl and lanthanide-uranyl sulfonylphosphonates with elegant crystal structures and photophysical properties can be assembled hydrothermally by employing the heterofunctional diethyl phosphonate (diethyl ((phenylsulfonyl)methyl)phosphonate, Et2L) as a precursor ligand, which provides an effective strategy for the construction of lanthanide-uranyl phosphonates.

Abstract
Template synthesis is one of the most feasible ways to explore new uranyl compounds with intriguing structures and properties. Here we demonstrate the preparation of six novel "sandwichlike" uranyl coordination polymers (UCPs) based on two-dimensional uranyl-terephthalate acid (H2TP) networks using CBn (n = 5, 6, 8) as template ligands in the presence of different cations (Na+, K+, Cs+, or H2N(CH3)2+). Compound 1 ([UO2(TP)2][Na2(CB5)(H2O)](H2O)5) is composed of layered uranyl-TP networks with the complex of CB5 and sodium cations as template ligands. In compound 2 ([(UO2)2(TP)3]2(CB6)(H2O)10), CB6 located between uranyl-TP networks contacts them by π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds. Compound 3 ([(UO2)2(TP)3]2[Na2(H2O)10(CB6)]) is the same as compound 2 except for sodium cations bonding with CB6. Similarly in compound 4 ([(UO2)2(TP)3][Cs(H2O)3(CB6)]), CB6 is a capsulelike structure capped with two cesium cations and interacts with uranyl-TP networks through π-π and C-H···π interactions. Compound 5 ([(UO2)2(TP)3(HCOO)2][K(H2O)2(CB5)]2[H2N(CH3)2]2(CB6)(H2O)6) consists of both templates of CB6 and CB5 in which each CB5 is capped with one potassium cation while the H2N(CH3)2+ cation is held at CB6 portals. In compound 6 ([(UO2)2(TP)3]2[UO2(TP)2(H2O)2][Cs(CB8)3(H2O)4](H2O)16), CB8 ligands are connected by cesium cations to form a triangle motif and are further located between the uranyl-TP networks as template agents. All of the 2D layered structures with free CBn or cation-anchored CBn intercalate into the laminates of uranyl-terephthalate and shows a cucurbituril-mediated structural evolution. The regulating role of CBn as structure-directing template agents for the construction of layered UCPs through outer-surface interactions with layers of uranyl terephthalate is demonstrated, especially for the case of CB6 with contractive interlayer spacing.

Abstract
An improved synthesis using microwave heating affords (C6H4PO(OCH3)2)2 in excellent isolated yield (95 %). The ligand properties of this bisphosphonateester were explored towards hard metal centers M2+ (M = Ca, UO2) and M3+ (M = La, Ce, Sm, Eu) resulting in coordination polymers, for which the reduction of ionic size of the central metal atom resulted in lower-dimensional structural motifs as opposed to higher dimensional networks obtained for the larger ions. All coordination polymers were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and combustion analysis. The ligand was furthermore characterized with multinuclear NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
The first heterobimetallic uranium(IV)/vanadium(III) phosphite compound, Na2UV2(HPO3)6 (denoted as UVP), was synthesized via an in situ redox-active hydrothermal reaction. It exhibits superior hydrolytic and antioxidant stability compared to the majority of structures containing low-valent uranium or vanadium, further elucidated by first-principles simulations, and therefore shows potential applications in nuclear waste management.
