Abstract
With the serendipitous discovery of crown ethers by Pedersen more than half a century ago and the subsequent introduction of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry by Cram and Lehn, respectively, followed by the design and synthesis of wholly synthetic cyclophanes-in particular, fluorescent cyclophanes, having rich structural characteristics and functions-have been the focus of considerable research activity during the past few decades. Cyclophanes with remarkable emissive properties have been investigated continuously over the years and employed in numerous applications across the field of science and technology. In this Review, we feature the recent developments in the chemistry of fluorescent cyclophanes, along with their design and synthesis. Their host-guest chemistry and applications related to their structure and properties are highlighted.

Abstract
A novel chiral fluorescence "turn-off" sensor was synthesised using the click reaction. The sensor was a BINOL-xylose derivative, modified at the 2-position and linked by 1,2,3-triazole. It was structurally characterized by 1HNMR, 13CNMR, ESI-MS and IR analysis. The selectivity of R-β-d-2 in methanol solution has been studied. Among the 19 transition metal ions, alkaline metal ions and alkaline earth metal ions studied, R-β-d-2 had a selective fluorescence quenching reaction for Fe3+. The detection limit of R-β-d-2 for Fe3+ was 0.91 μmol L-1. Complexation between R-β-d-2 and Fe3+ was investigated by ESI-MS and 1HNMR. The stoichiometric ratio of R-β-d-2 was 1 : 1. In addition, the R-β-d-2-Fe3+ complex was titrated with 20 naturally occurring amino acids and Hcy with GSH. It was found that the complex R-β-d-2-Fe3+ had a secondary recognition effect on Cys by switching to fluorescence.

Abstract
In this work, four novel metal–organic frameworks [Cd(bipa)]n (1), {[Zn2(bipa)2]·2C2H5OH}n (2), {[Co(bipa)]·C2H5OH}n (3), {[Ni(bipa)2]·2DMA}n (4), (H2bipa = 5-(benzimidazole-1-yl)isophthalic acid) were successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Complexes 1–4 were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Interestingly, the coordination patterns and 3D network structures of complexes 1–3 are very similar, while complex 4 is relatively unique. Complexes 1–2 exhibit potential fluorescent properties. Complex 1 can selectively and sensitively detect trace Fe(iii) and Cr(vi) in water by fluorescence quenching detection, and the quenching mechanism is further discussed. In this work, four novel MOFs [Cd(bipa)]n (1), {[Zn2(bipa)2]·2C2H5OH}n (2), {[Co(bipa)]·C2H5OH}n (3), {[Ni(bipa)2]·2DMA}n (4), (H2bipa = 5-(benzimidazole-1-yl)isophthalic acid) were successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions.![]()

Abstract
In this paper, we report the synthesis of a multifunctional fluorescent probe Tb-CP, Tb(HL)(EtOH)2(NO3)2 (HPU-10) (H2L = 2,6-bis-(5-pyridin-4-yl-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)- pyridine), and demonstrate that this novel chemosensor has the property of ratiometric detection of Zn2+ and Cd2+. The detection limit of HPU-10 sensing Zn2+ and Cd2+ is 0.319 and 0.965 μM, respectively. The sensing mechanism can be explained by (i) the decomposition of HPU-10 and (ii) the recombination of Zn2+ or Cd2+ with ligand forming 2HL--Zn2+ or 2HL--Cd2+, respectively. Moreover, the fluorescent sensor HPU-10 can detect the nitroaromatic compound 2, 4-DNP via a fluorescence quenching mechanism. The detection limits obtained from linear regression curve plots of 2, 4-DNP is calculated to be 1.69 μM. In addition, the possible use of the probe coated paper for tracing the target analytes has also been presented.

Abstract
A new series of conjugated donor-π-acceptor type of 2,6-bis(pyrazolyl)pyridine derivatives (compounds IK-(3-9)) have been synthesized via Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reaction, starting from a common phosphonate precursor and diverse donor aromatic aldehydes and characterized by routine spectral analysis including elemental analysis. Compound IK-2, one of the starting precursors, and molecule IK-3, the first member of the donor-π-acceptor series, are additionally characterized by single-crystal X-ray structure determination. Compounds IK-2 and IK-3 are crystallized in P1̅ (triclinic) and P21/c (monoclinic) space groups, respectively. The absorption maxima in the electronic spectra of the title compounds shift mainly due to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) between different donor (dibutyl and cyclic pyrrolidine) groups and the acceptor moiety [2,6-bis(pyrazolyl) pyridine]. Solution-state emission spectral studies of all these compounds show large solvent sensitive behavior with significant amounts of Stokes shifts. The large solvent dependence of the emission indicates that the excited state is stabilized in more polar solvents due to the ICT. All chromophores exhibit solid-state fluorescence behavior except compound IK-7. The role of the position and nature of the donor functionalities in the conjugated backbone of overall donor moiety of compounds IK-(3-9), on the electronic absorption properties of the title chromophores has been demonstrated, which has further been corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) computational studies. The emission spectral results of compounds IK-3, IK-5, and IK-7 have also been supported by the DFT and TDDFT calculations. A fluorescence lifetime study on this series also shows that the excited states are stabilized in more polar solvents. Finally, one of the chromophores (chromophore IK-4) in the title series has been shown to act as a selective molecular sensor (turn-off switch) for the Cu(II) ion.

Abstract
The assembly of CuII with the multifunctional ligand 2-amino-4-sulfobenzoic acid (H2asba) in the presence of the auxiliary flexible ligands 1,4-bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (bbtz) and 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (bix) under ambient conditions resulted in two new supramolecular coordination polymers, namely poly[[(3-amino-4-carboxybenzenesulfonato-κO)aquabis[μ2-1,4-bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene-κ2N4:N4']copper(II)] 3-amino-4-carboxybenzenesulfonate tetrahydrate], {[Cu(C7H6NO5S)(C12H12N6)2(H2O)](C7H6NO5S)·4H2O}n, (1), and poly[[bis(μ2-2-amino-4-sulfonatobenzoato-κ3O1:N,O1')tetraaqua[μ2-1,4-bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene-κ2N4:N4']dicopper(II)] tetrahydrate], {[Cu2(C7H5NO5S)2(C14H14N4)(H2O)4]·4H2O}n, (2). Single-crystal X-ray structure diffraction analysis of (1) reveals that the bbtz ligand acts as a bridge, linking adjacent CuII ions into a two-dimensional cationic (4,4) topological network, in which the coordinated 3-amino-4-carboxybenzenesulfonate (Hasba-) anion uses its sulfonate group to bind with the CuII ion in a monodentate fashion and the carboxylate group remains protonated. The lattice Hasba- anion resides in the two-dimensional layer and balances the charge. The carboxylate group of the 2-amino-4-sulfonatobenzoate (asba2-) ligand in (2) is involved in bidentate coordination, connecting adjacent CuII ions into carboxylate-bridged chains which are further bridged by the auxiliary flexible bix ligand in a trans-gauche (TG) mode, resulting in the formation of a two-dimensional network architecture. The amino group of the asba2- ligand in (2) also takes part in the coordination with the central CuII ion. The six-coordinated CuII centres in (1) and (2) exhibit distorted octahedral coordination geometries. Extensive hydrogen bonding exists in both (1) and (2). The interlayer hydrogen bonds in both compounds further extend adjacent two-dimensional layers into three-dimensional supramolecular network architectures. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the solid-state UV-Vis-NIR (NIR is near IR) diffuse reflectance data indicates that (1) and (2) may have potential as wide band gap indirect semiconductor materials. Compounds (1) and (2) show reversible and irreversible dehydration-rehydration behaviours, respectively.
