Thermally Stable Zinc Disalphen Macrocycles Showing Solid-State and Aggregation-Induced Enhanced Emission

Aggregation-Induced Modulation of Ground and Excited State Photophysics of 5-(tert-Butyl)-2-Hydroxy-1,3-Isophthalaldehyde (5-tBHI)

5-(tert-Butyl)-2-hydroxy-1,3-isophthalaldehyde (5-tBHI) is a photochromic material susceptible to either excited state proton transfer or excited state intramolecular proton transfer, depending upon the solvent. However, it has also been found to aggregate in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. In this current study, based on the steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, supported by crystallography, quantum chemical density functional theory calculation, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, we report on the aggregation of this potential single benzene-based emitter (SBBE) in neat solvents as well as solid phase to modulate its photophysics. It has been found that 5-tBHI forms mixed aggregates of different orders, owing to the presence of both enolic and tautomeric forms, to yield tunable emission, although the emission intensity is quenched. These findings suggest that the intramolecular hydrogen bonding of 5-tBHI not only limits intermolecular interactions but also promotes nonradiative deactivation pathways. Hence, designing and structural engineering, with a focus to suppressing intramolecular hydrogen bonding as well as increasing through space conjugation by replacing the aldehydic moieties with bulky aliphatic or aromatic ketonic groups, can be a plausible approach to yielding improved probes with tunable emission and higher fluorescence quantum yields.

Non-trivial ground and excited state photophysics of a substituted phenol

5-(tert-Butyl)-2-hydroxy-1,3-isophthalaldehyde (5-tBHI) shows solvent dependent single or dual emission. The photophysics of 5-tBHI has been studied in a variety of solvents and the results were compared with that of the methyl derivative of the probe as well as the 5-tBHI anion. It has been found that the intramolecular H-bonded conformer of 5-tBHI predominantly exists in non-polar solvents, and undergoes facile excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). On the other hand, a dynamic equilibrium can be found in polar, protic solvents, even in the ground state, except in water. NMR analyses confirm the loss of aromaticity of the probe in the ground state via anion formation, in equilibrium with the solvent mediated intermolecularly H-bonded state, in neat polar protic solvents like methanol. The proton transfer process, either intramolecularly or intermolecularly, was found to be of the order of 1 ps, and even faster than the instrumental resolution in the case of water. The current finding provides important insights on the photophysics of this small, substituted phenol.

Applications of macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry

Macrocyclic molecules have been used in various fields owing to their guest binding properties. Macrocycle-based host-guest chemistry in solution can allow for precise control of complex formation. Although solution-phase host-guest complexes are easily prepared, their limited stability and processability prevent widespread application. Extending host-guest chemistry from solution to the solid state results in complexes that are generally more robust, enabling easier processing and broadened applications. Macrocyclic compounds in the solid state can encapsulate guests with larger affinities than their soluble counterparts. This is crucial for use in applications such as separation science and devices. In this Review, we summarize recent progress in macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry and discuss the basic physical chemistry of these complexes. Representative macrocycles and their solid-state complexes are explored, as well as potential applications. Finally, perspectives and challenges are discussed.

Zinc(II) Complexes with Triplet Charge-Transfer Excited States Enabling Energy-Transfer Catalysis, Photoinduced Electron Transfer, and Upconversion

Many Cu^I complexes have luminescent triplet charge-transfer excited states with diverse applications in photophysics and photochemistry, but for isoelectronic Zn^II compounds, this behavior is much less common, and they typically only show ligand-based fluorescence from singlet π-π* states. We report two closely related tetrahedral Zn^II compounds, in which intersystem crossing occurs with appreciable quantum yields and leads to the population of triplet excited states with intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) character. In addition to showing fluorescence from their initially excited ¹ILCT states, these new compounds therefore undergo triplet-triplet energy transfer (TTET) from their ³ILCT states and consequently can act as sensitizers for photo-isomerization reactions and triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion from the blue to the ultraviolet spectral range. The photoactive ³ILCT state furthermore facilitates photoinduced electron transfer. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that mononuclear Zn^II compounds with photophysical and photochemical properties reminiscent of well-known Cu^I complexes are accessible with suitable ligands and that they are potentially amenable to many different applications. Our insights seem relevant in the greater context of obtaining photoactive compounds based on abundant transition metals, complementing well-known precious-metal-based luminophores and photosensitizers.

Aggregation-Induced Enhanced Emission-Active Zinc(II) β-Diketiminate Complexes Enabling High-Performance Solution-Processable OLEDs

Earth-abundant and cheaper zinc-based organometallic molecules as luminophores are drawing significant research attention for solid-state lighting devices. In this paper, we report two air-stable zinc complexes, where the zinc is coordinated to two sterically encumbered β-diketiminate ligands in a tetrahedral geometry. In such a geometry, eight phenyl/aryl rings from the ligand backbones are oriented in a propeller shape, augmenting the restricted rotation of the putative rings. Such an architecture harnesses aggregation-induced emission behavior with an excellent solid-state emission property. The rigidity of these molecules reduces the possibility of non-radiative transitions and makes them excellent fluorescence emitters. Both molecules exhibit electroluminescence (EL) in the yellowish-green region of the visible spectrum. We have utilized these molecules as emitters to fabricate multilayered organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. The emitter Zn-I in host m-MTDATA exhibits EL with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 4.4%. Among the handful of zinc-based OLEDs, the performance of this emitter is very commendable with power and current efficacies of 15.2 lm W^-1 and 12.1 cd A^-1, respectively, along with a brightness of 2426 cd m^-2.

Quenched Lewis Acidity: Studies on the Medium Dependent Fluorescence of Zinc(II) Complexes

Three new zinc(II) coordination units [Zn(1-3)] based on planar-directing tetradentate Schiff base-like ligands H2 (1-3) were synthesized. Their solid-state structures were investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction, showing the tendency to overcome the square-planar coordination sphere by axial ligation. Affinity in solution towards axial ligation has been tested by extended spectroscopic studies, both in the absorption and emission mode. The electronic spectrum of the pyridine complex [Zn(1)(py)] has been characterized by MC-PDFT to validate the results of extended TD-DFT studies. Green emission of non-emissive solutions of [Zn(1-3)] in chloroform could be switched on in the presence of potent Lewis-bases. While interpretation in terms of an equilibrium of stacked/non-fluorescent and destacked/fluorescent species is in line with precedents from literature, the sensitivity of [Zn(1-3)] was greatly reduced. Results of a computation-based structure search allow to trace the hidden Lewis acidity of [Zn(1-3)] to a new stacking motif, resulting in a strongly enhanced stability of the dimers.

New dinuclear zinc(ii) complexes with Schiff bases obtained from o-phenylenediamine and their application as fluorescent materials in spin coating deposition

Two Zn(ii) complexes, K1 and K2, obtained from the template reaction of zinc(ii) acetate dihydrate with o-phenylenediamine and 2-hydroxy-5-methylisophthalaldehyde (K1) or 2-hydroxy-5-tert-butyl-1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehyde (K2), respectively, were characterized by X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic (UV-vis, fluorescence and IR), and thermal methods. In the complex [Zn₂(MeO)_1.4(OH)_0.6(L1)]·2H₂O K1, there are two binding sites in the macrocyclic ligand and they are occupied by zinc(ii) cations found in slightly distorted square pyramidal environment. The zinc(ii) cations are connected by slightly asymmetric oxo bridges with a Zn1–O14–Zn1[−x, −y + 1, −z + 1] angle of 104.8(2)°. In the dimer [Zn₂(CH₃COO)₂(L2)]·2EtOH K2, there are two crystallographically independent binding sites both occupied by zinc(ii) cations. There is a significant difference between both complexes, since in K1 only one site is independent and the second is occupied due to the application of symmetry rules, and the geometry of both sites is identical. Thin layers of the obtained Zn(ii) complexes were deposited on Si(111) by the spin coating method and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), fluorescence spectroscopy and ellipsometry. In the non-absorbing range, the value of the refractive index exhibits normal dispersion between 1.8 and 2.1 for K1_1–K1_3; and between 2.3 and 2.6 for the K2 series of samples established for long wavelengths (longer than 500 nm). The Zn(ii) complexes and their thin layers exhibited fluorescence between 534–573 nm and 495–572 nm for the compounds and the layers, respectively. The highest quantum yield of fluorescence was achieved for K2 in benzene and in the solid state ϕ = 0.78 and 0.58, respectively. The influence of the solvent polarity on the fluorescence properties of the obtained complexes was studied. Additionally, DFT calculations were performed to explain the structures and electronic spectral properties of the complexes.

Zinc (II) and AIEgens: The "Clip Approach" for a Novel Fluorophore Family. A Review

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compounds display a photophysical phenomenon in which the aggregate state exhibits stronger emission than the isolated units. The common term of "AIEgens" was coined to describe compounds undergoing the AIE effect. Due to the recent interest in AIEgens, the search for novel hybrid organic-inorganic compounds with unique luminescence properties in the aggregate phase is a relevant goal. In this perspective, the abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic d10 zinc cation offers unique opportunities for building AIE active fluorophores, sensing probes, and bioimaging tools. Considering the novelty of the topic, relevant examples collected in the last 5 years (2016-2021) through scientific production can be considered fully representative of the state-of-the-art. Starting from the simple phenomenological approach and considering different typological and chemical units and structures, we focused on zinc-based AIEgens offering synthetic novelty, research completeness, and relevant applications. A special section was devoted to Zn(II)-based AIEgens for living cell imaging as the novel technological frontier in biology and medicine.
