Facile One-Pot Synthesis of Ruthenium(II) Quaterpyridine-Based Photosensitizers for Photocatalyzed Hydrogen Production

Lemon-juice derived highly efficient S-GQD/GO composite as a photocatalyst for regeneration of coenzyme under solar light

The innovation of a highly efficient and inexpensive graphene oxide-based photocatalyst is a challenging task for selective solar chemical regeneration/coenzyme such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). Herein, we have designed lemon-juice derived highly efficient S-GQD/GO composite as a photocatalyst for regeneration of NADH under solar light. The rational design of a highly efficient photocatalytic system through the orientation of S-GQD on graphene oxide as solar light harvesting photocatalyst is explored for the first time for NADH regeneration. This highly solar light active S-GQD/GO composite photocatalyst upon integration with the NAD + is used for highly regioselective regeneration of coenzyme (76.36%). The present work provides the benchmark instances of graphene oxide-based material as a photocatalyst for selective regeneration of NADH under solar light and opens a new door for green synthesis.

Titanium-Porphyrin Metal-Organic Frameworks as Visible-Light-Driven Catalysts for Highly Efficient Sonophotocatalytic Reduction of Cr(VI)

In this work, we synthesized and characterized four titanium-porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [DGIST-1(M), M = Co(II), Fe(III), Zn(II), and H₂] and used them as visible-light-driven catalysts for sonophotocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction. DGIST-1(M) exhibited open-framework, broad light absorption stemmed from ligand and sensitive photocurrent responses owing to the integration of one-dimensional Ti-oxo chains and 4-connected conjugated TCPP ligand (TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrin). DGIST-1(M) presented efficient reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in aqueous solution when used as sonophotocatalytic catalysts. The average reduction rates upon Cr(VI) were 0.920, 0.476, 0.377, and 0.194 mg·L^-1·min^-1 for DGIST-1(H₂), DGIST-1(Zn), DGIST-1(Co), and DGIST-1(Fe), which are 1.15-2.45 times higher than those in photocatalysis. Sonophotocatalytic experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance measurement proved that Ti-oxo chain units and porphyrin ligand in the structures of DGIST-1(M) existed as catalytic active centers for sonophotocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). Photoluminescence and UV absorption spectra revealed that the unity of photocatalysis and sonochemistry strengthened the migration of photogenerated electrons from DGIST-1(M) to Cr(VI), which improved the activities of catalysts. This study suggested that the association of titanium-porphyrin MOFs and sonophotocatalytic technology is an impactful program for enhancing MOF-based photocatalytic systems.

Efficient Photoinduced Electron Transfer from Pyrene-o-Carborane Heterojunction to Selenoviologen for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Reduction of Alkynes

A series of pyrene or pyrene-o-carborane-appendant selenoviologens (Py-SeV²⁺ , Py-Cb-SeV²⁺ ) for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and reduction of alkynes is reported. The efficient photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from electron-rich pyrene-o-carborane heterojunction (Py-Cb) with intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristic to electron-deficient selenoviologen (SeV²⁺ ) (k_ET = 1.2 × 10¹⁰ s^-1 ) endows the accelerating the generation of selenoviologen radical cation (SeV^+• ) compared with Py-SeV²⁺ and other derivatives. The electrochromic/electrofluorochromic devices' (ECD and EFCD) measurements and supramolecular assembly/disassembly processes of SeV²⁺ and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) results show that the PET process can be finely tuned by electrochemical and host-guest chemistry methods. By combination with Pt-NPs catalyst, the Py-Cb-SeV²⁺ -based system shows high-efficiency visible-light-driven HER and highly selective phenylacetylene reduction due to the efficient PET process.

Molecular engineering for optical properties of 5-substituted-1,10-phenanthroline-based Ru(II) complexes

A series of homo- and heteroleptic Ru(ii) complexes [Ru(phen)3-n(phen-X)n](PF6)2 (n = 0-3, X = CN, epoxy, H, NH2) were prepared and characterized. The influence of electron-withdrawing or electron-releasing substituents of the 1,10-phenanthroline ligands on the photo-physical properties was evaluated. It reveals fundamental interests in the fine tuning of redox potentials and photo-physical characteristics, depending both on the nature of the substitution of the ligand, and on the symmetry of the related homo- or heteroleptic complex. These complexes exhibit linear absorption and two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-sections over a broad range of wavelength (700-900 nm) due to absorption in the intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) and the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) bands. These 2PA properties were more particularly investigated in the 700-1000 spectral range for a family of complexes bearing electro-donating ligands (phen-NH2).

Key Strategy for the Rational Incorporation of Long-Lived NIR Emissive Cr(III) Chromophores into Polymetallic Architectures

The Cr^IIIN₆ chromophores are particularly appealing for low-energy sensitization via energy transfer processes since they show extremely long excited state lifetimes reaching the millisecond range in the technologically crucial near-infrared domain. However, their properties were barely harnessed in multimetallic structures because of the lack of both monitoring methods and accessible synthetic pathways. We herein report a remedy to monitor and control the formation of Cr^III-containing assemblies in solution via the design of a Cr^IIIN₆ inert "complex-as-ligand" that can be included into polymetallic architectures. As a proof of concept, these CrN₆ building blocks were reacted in solution with Zn^II or Fe^II to give extended trinuclear linear Cr-M-Cr assemblies, the structure of which could be addressed by NMR spectroscopy despite the presence of two slowly relaxing Cr^III paramagnetic centers. In addition to long Cr^III excited state lifetimes and weak sensitivity to oxygen quenching, these polymetallic assemblies display controlled Cr^III to M^II energy transfers, which pave the way for use of the "complex-as-ligand" strategy for introducing photophysically active Cr^III probes into light-converting polymetallic devices.

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Driven by a Heteroleptic Ruthenium(II) Bis(terpyridine) Complex

Since the initial report by Lehn et al. in 1979, ruthenium tris(bipyridine) ([Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺) and its numerous derivatives were applied as photosensitizers (PSs) in a large panel of photocatalytic conditions while the bis(terpyridine) analogues were disregarded because of their low quantum yields and short excited-state lifetimes. In this study, we prepared a new terpyridine ligand, 4'-(4-bromophenyl)-4,4‴:4″,4‴'-dipyridinyl- 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Bipytpy) and used it to prepare the heteroleptic complex [Ru(Tolyltpy)(Bipytpy)](PF₆)₂ (1; Tolyltpy = 4'-tolyl-2,2':6',2'-terpyridine). Complex 1 exhibits enhanced photophysical properties with a higher quantum yield (7.4 × 10^-4) and a longer excited-state lifetime (3.8 ns) compared to those of [Ru(Tolyltpy)₂](PF₆)₂ (3 × 10^-5 and 0.74 ns, respectively). These enhanced photophysical characteristics and the potential for PS-catalyst interaction through the peripheral pyridines led us to apply the complex for visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution. The photocatalytic system based on 1 as the PS, triethanolamine as a sacrificial donor, and cobaloxime as a catalyst exhibits sustained activity over more than 10 days under blue-light irradiation (light-emitting diode centered at 450 nm). A maximum turnover number of 764 was obtained after 12 days.

Design and photophysical studies of iridium(iii)–cobalt(iii) dyads and their application for dihydrogen photo-evolution

We report several new dyads constituted of cationic iridium(iii) photosensitizers and cobalt(iii) catalyst connected via free pendant pyridine on the photosensitizers.

Trifluoromethyl-Substituted Iridium(III) Complexes: From Photophysics to Photooxidation of a Biological Target

Photodynamic therapeutic agents are of key interest in developing new strategies to develop more specific and efficient anticancer treatments. In comparison to classical chemotherapeutic agents, the activity of photodynamic therapeutic compounds can be finely controlled thanks to the light triggering of their photoreactivity. The development of type I photosensitizing agents, which do not rely on the production of ROS, is highly desirable. In this context, we developed new iridium(III) complexes which are able to photoreact with biomolecules; namely, our Ir(III) complexes can oxidize guanine residues under visible light irradiation. We report the synthesis and extensive photophysical characterization of four new Ir(III) complexes, [Ir(ppyCF₃)₂(N^N)]⁺ [ppyCF₃ = 2-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine) and N^N = 2,2'-dipyridyl (bpy); 2-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazine (pzpy); 2,2'-bipyrazine (bpz); 1,4,5,8-tetraazaphenanthrene (TAP)]. In addition to an extensive experimental and theoretical study of the photophysics of these complexes, we characterize their photoreactivity toward model redox-active targets and the relevant biological target, the guanine base. We demonstrate that photoinduced electron transfer takes place between the excited Ir(III) complex and guanine which leads to the formation of stable photoproducts, indicating that the targeted guanine is irreversibly damaged. These results pave the way to the elaboration of new type I photosensitizers for targeting cancerous cells.

A Bisamide Ruthenium Polypyridyl Complex as a Robust and Efficient Photosensitizer for Hydrogen Production

A photosensitizer based on a ruthenium complex of a bisamide-polypyridyl ligand gives rise to a large improvement in photocatalytic stability, rate of activity, and efficiency in photocatalytic H₂ production compared to [Ru(bpy)₃ ]²⁺ (bpy=2,2'-bpyridine). The bisamide ruthenium polypyridyl complex combined with a cobaltoxime-based photocatalyst was found to be highly efficient under blue-light (turnover number (TON)=7800) and green-light irradiation (TON=7200) whereas [Ru(bpy)₃ ]²⁺ was significantly less effective with a TON of 2600 and 1100, respectively. The greatest improvement was under red-light-emitting diodes, with bisamide ruthenium polypyridyl complex and cobaltoxime exhibiting a TON of 4200 compared to [Ru(bpy)₃ ]²⁺ and cobaltoxime at a TON of only 71.
