Cooperative Au(I)···Au(I) Interactions and Hydrogen Bonding as Origin of a Luminescent Adeninate Hydrogel Formed by Ultrathin Molecular Nanowires

Spontaneous Water-Promoted Self-Aggregation of a Hydrophilic Gold(I) Complex Due to Ligand Sphere Rearrangement

Aggregating gold(I) complexes in solution through short aurophilic contacts promotes new photoluminescent deactivation pathways (aggregation-induced emission, AIE). The time dependence of spontaneous AIE is seldom studied. We examine the behavior of complex [Au(N9-hypoxanthinate)(PTA)] (1) in an aqueous solution with the aid of variable-temperature NMR, time-resolved UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy, and PGSE NMR. The studies suggest that partial ligand scrambling in favor of the ionic [Au(PTA)2][Au(N9-hypoxanthinate)2] pair followed by anion oligomerization takes place. The results are rationalized with the aid of computational calculations at the TD-DFT level of theory and IRI analysis of the electron density.

Spontaneous in situ generation of photoemissive aurophilic oligomers in water solution based on the 2-thiocytosine ligand

Complexes [Au(S-2-thiocytosinate)(PMe₃)] (2, 2-thiocytosine = 4-amino-2-mercaptopyrimidine) and [Au(S-2-thiocytosine)(PMe₃)](CF₃CO₂) (3) have been prepared by the reaction of [Au(acac)(PMe₃)] (1, acac = acetylacetonate) or [Au(OCOCF₃)(PMe₃)] with 2-thiocytosine, respectively. The equimolecular mixture of complexes 1 and 3 also produces [{Au(PMe₃)}₂(μ-S,N¹-2-thiocytosinate)](CF₃CO₂) (4), which features two distinct [Au(PMe₃)]⁺ groups coordinated to the S and N¹ atoms of the heterocycle. Complex 4 experiences a ligand redistribution process in water solution that liberates [Au(PMe₃)₂](CF₃CO₂) and a brightly coloured and luminescent species of [Au_n(μ-S,N¹-2-thiocytosinate)_n] stoichiometry, presumably as a tetraauracycle (n = 4).

The doubly-aurated [{Au(PMe₃)}₂(μ-S,N¹-2-thiocytosinate)]⁺ cation breaks up in water solution to form a strongly-coloured and photoluminescent neutral aurophilic oligomer.

Recent Progress on Supramolecular Luminescent Assemblies Based on Aurophilic Interactions in Solution

The development of supramolecular systems showing aurophilic interactions in solution is gaining much attention in the last years. This is due to the intriguing photophysical properties of gold(I) complexes, which usually confer to these supramolecular assemblies interesting luminescent properties, as well as the possibility of morphological modulation, through fine tuning of inter- and intramolecular aurophilic interactions, in synergy with the formation of other supramolecular contacts. In this work, an overview of the advances made in this area since 2015 is presented. A large variety of systems showing different spectroscopical and structural topologies has been reported. Moreover, these supramolecular assemblies have proven to be useful in a wide range of applications.

Time-Dependent Molecular Rearrangement of [Au(N9-adeninate)(PTA)] in Aqueous Solution and Aggregation-Induced Emission in a Hydrogel Matrix

An in-depth study of the molecular rearrangement of the complex [Au(N⁹-adeninate)(PTA)] (1), promoted in aqueous solution, is presented. This complex, which has been previously described as forming dimers in its crystalline form, is also demonstrated as being able to assemble into an infinite Au^I···Au^I chain polymer. The structural motifs are tentatively related to the dramatic modification of the photoemissive properties of 1 in water solution at long times, with the aid of UV-vis and photoluminescence measurements, PGSE-NMR, and theoretical calculations. A subtle equilibrium in favor of aurophilically governed aggregates has been envisaged as the driving force of the molecular rearrangement. Furthermore, 1 has been explored as an additive of the hydrogel of [Au(N⁹-adeninate)(PMe₃)] (2) for a further tuning of its photophysical properties without loss of the gel texture.

Fluorination Effects in XPhos Gold(I) Fluorothiolates

Gold phosphine derivatives such as thiolates have been recently proposed as catalysts or catalyst precursors. The relevance of the supramolecular environment on the fine-tuning of the catalytical activity on these compounds incentivizes the use of tools that are convenient to characterize in detail the non-covalent landscape of the systems. Herein, we show the molecular and supramolecular diversity caused by the changes in the fluorination pattern in a family of new XPhos goldfluorothiolate derivatives. Furthermore, we studied the supramolecular interactions around the Au centers using quantum chemical topology tools, in particular the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and the non-covalent interaction index. Our results give detailed insights into the fluorination effects on the strength of intramolecular and intermolecular interactions in these systems. We have also used QTAIM delocalization indexes to define a novel hapticity indicator. Finally, we assessed the trans influence of the fluorothiolates on the phosphine in terms of the change in the δ 31P-NMR. These results show the feasibility of the use of fluorination in the modulation of the electronic properties of Buchwald phosphine gold(I) compounds, and thereby its potential catalytic activity.

Multidisciplinary study on the hydrogelation of the digold(i) complex [{Au(9N-adeninate)}2(μ-dmpe)]: optical, rheological, and quasi-elastic neutron scattering perspectives

Non-conventional experimental techniques such as rheology or QENS will aid synthetic inorganic chemists to broaden the knowledge on gold(i) hydrometallogels’ structure and properties and to understand their expected relationship.

Directing the Crystal Packing in Triphenylphosphine Gold(I) Thiolates by Ligand Fluorination

We explore herein the supramolecular interactions that control the crystalline packing in a series of fluorothiolate triphenylphosphine gold(I) compounds with the general formula [Au(SR_F)(Ph₃P)] in which Ph₃P = triphenylphosphine and SR_F = SC₆F₅, SC₆HF₄-4, SC₆F₄(CF₃)-4, SC₆H₃F₂-2,4, SC₆H₃F₂-3,4, SC₆H₃F₂-3,5, SC₆H₄(CF₃)-2, SC₆H₄F-2, SC₆H₄F-3, SC₆H₄F-4, SCF₃, and SCH₂CF₃. We use for this purpose (i) DFT electronic structure calculations and (ii) the quantum theory of atoms in molecules and the non-covalent interactions index methods of wave function analyses. Our combined experimental and computational approach yields a general understanding of the effects of ligand fluorination in the crystalline self-assembly of the examined systems, in particular, about the relative force of aurophilic contacts compared with other supramolecular interactions. We expect this information to be useful in the design of materials based on gold coordination compounds.

Exploring the Self-Assembled Tacticity in Aurophilic Polymeric Arrangements of Diphosphanegold(I) Fluorothiolates

Despite the recurrence of aurophilic interactions in the solid-state structures of gold(I) compounds, its rational control, modulation, and application in the generation of functional supramolecular structures is an area that requires further development. The ligand effects over the aurophilic-based supramolecular structures need to be better understood. This paper presents the supramolecular structural diversity of a series of new 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphane)propane (dppp) gold(I) fluorinated thiolates with the general formula [Au₂(SR_F)₂(μ-dppp)] (SR_F = SC₆F₅ (1); SC₆HF₄-4 (2); SC₆H₃(CF₃)₂-3,5 (3); SC₆H₄CF₃-2 (4); SC₆H₄CF₃-4 (5); SC₆H₃F₂-3,4 (6); SC₆H₃F₂-3,5 (7); SC₆H₄F-2 (8); SC₆H₄F-3 (9); SC₆H₄F-4 (10)). These compounds were synthesized and characterized, and six of their solid-state crystalline structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the crystalline arrangement, they form aurophilic-bridged polymers. In these systems, the changes in the fluorination patterns of the thiolate ligands tune the aurophilic-induced self-assembly of the compounds causing tacticity and chiral differentiation of the monomers. This is an example of the use of ligand effects on the tune of the supramolecular association of gold complexes.

Aggregation induced emission of a new naphthyridine-ethynyl-gold(i) complex as a potential tool for sensing guanosine nucleotides in aqueous media

A new organometallic alkynyl-gold(i) complex capable of exhibiting aggregation induced emission was designed and synthesized. The linear complex structure possesses a central Au(i) atom, bearing two axial ligands: (1) 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane and (2) 2-acetamido-7-ethynyl-1,8-naphthyridine. While the former accounts for its partial solubility in an aqueous environment, the latter acts as a receptor unit for binding guanosine nucleotides and derivatives via multiple hydrogen bonding interactions. At high concentrations, aggregation of the complex was observed by the formation of new absorption (λ_max∼ 400 nm) and emission bands (550-700 nm). Formation of aggregates of ca. 60 nm diameter was confirmed by Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). Disruption of the aggregates in the presence of guanosine derivatives resulted in a ratiometric signal with apparent association constants in the order of 10⁵ M^-1 and high sensitivity (around 63% signal change) which are, to the best of our knowledge, in line with the highest values recorded for nucleotide sensors based on hydrogen bonding and capable of working in water. Computational studies indicate the presence of additional hydrogen bonding interactions that account for the strong binding of the Au(i) complex to phosphorylated guanosine nucleotides.

Balancing ionic and H-bonding interactions for the formation of Au(i) hydrometallogels

Complex [Au(⁹N-adenine)(PMe₃)](CF₃CO₂) displays a supramolecular structure built up through ionic, π-stacking, C–H⋯O, C–H⋯N and C–H⋯Au interactions. This complex forms a stable hydrometallogel consisting of straight molecular nanowires.
