Pentagonal-Bipyramid Ln(III) Complexes Exhibiting Single-Ion-Magnet Behavior: A Rational Synthetic Approach for a Rigid Equatorial Plane

In situ hydrolysis of a carbophosphazene ligand leads to one-dimensional lanthanide coordination polymers. Synthesis, structure and dynamic magnetic studies

An in situ hydrolysis of the P-Cl bonds of the carbophosphazene [{NC(NMe2)}2{NPCl2}] (LPCl2) in the presence of hydrated lanthanide(III) nitrates in a dichloromethane and methanol (2 : 1) solvent mixture afforded a series of novel 1D coordination polymers: [{Ln(LHPO2)3(NO3)2(CH3OH)(H2O)} (Cl)]n {where Ln(III) = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3), or Er (4) and LHPO2 is the hydrolyzed carbophosphazene (LPCl2) ligand}. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that complexes 1-4 are isostructural and crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system having P21/c space group. The coordination polymers are formed because of the involvement of the geminal P(O)(OH) moieties of the carbophosphazene ligand. Each lanthanide(III) ion is 9-coordinate (9O) in a distorted muffin geometry. Magnetic measurements revealed that both DyIII and ErIII analogues exhibit field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior at 0.8 kOe and 2.2 k Oe, respectively. At such dc fields, the dynamic magnetic susceptibility displays complex behavior with a triple magnetic relaxation contribution for 3, while two contributions were identified for 4. The observed static and dynamic magnetic behavior for complexes 1-4 were further rationalized with the aid of BS-DFT and CASSCF/SO-RASSI/SINGLE_ANISO calculations.

Eight-coordinate mono- and dinuclear Dy(III) complexes containing a rigid equatorial plane and an anisobidentate carboxylate ligand in the axial position: synthesis, structure and magnetism

A rigid pentadentate chelating ligand (H2L) has been utilized to synthesize a series of octacoordinate mononuclear complexes, [Dy(L)(Ph3PO)(OOCR)] (where R = C6H5 (1), C(CH3)3 (2), CF3 (3)) and a dinuclear complex, [Dy2(L)2(Ph3PO)2{(OOC)2C6H4}] (4) based on the highly anisotropic Dy(III) ion. All the complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The complexes were formed by the coordination action of the dianionic pentadentate ligand [L]2-, one phosphine oxide, and carboxylate ligands. DC and AC magnetic measurements were performed on 1-4. Complexes 1-4 show SMM behaviour, under zero DC field for 1 and 4, and under 500 Oe and 1000 Oe DC fields for 2 and 3 respectively, with thermally activated, Raman, and Raman and quantum tunnelling dominant relaxation mechanisms for 1 and 2, 3 and 4, respectively.

Unravelling the role of spin-vibrational coupling in designing high-performance pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) single ion magnets

At the cutting edge of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs) lie lanthanide-based complexes, renowned for their potent magnetic anisotropy. SMMs containing one metal centre are defined as single-ion magnets (SIMs). The performance of SMMs is measured generally via the barrier height for magnetisation reversal (Ueff) and blocking temperature (TB), below which the magnetisation is fully frozen. To enhance the Ueff and TB values in lanthanide-based SMMs, the static crystal field splitting of mJ levels has been effectively adjusted through ligand design, leveraging the oblate/prolate ground state 4f electron density shape. However, the maximum fine-tuning achievable through ligand design, known as the axial limit, has already been reached in this class of compounds. This necessitates new design principles to enhance SMM characteristics to better suit end-user applications. Among other avenues that can be explored to improve SMM characteristics, a deeper understanding of spin-phonon coupling is critical to advancing TB values. However, there are only a handful of examples where this has been deciphered. In this work, using a combination of DFT and ab initio CASSCF calculations, we have performed spin-phonon calculations on five classes of pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) SIMs exhibiting TB values in the range of 4.5 K to 36 K ([Dy(bbpen)Br] (1, H2bbpen = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'-bis(2-methylpyridyl)ethylenediamine), [Dy(OCMe3)Br(THF)5][BPh4] (2) [Dy(OSiMe3)Br(THF)5] [BPh4] (3), [Dy(LN5)(Ph3SiO)2](BPh4)·CH2Cl2 (4) and [L2Dy(H2O)5][I]3·L2·H2O (5, L = tBuPO(NHiPr)2)). Unlike the method employed elsewhere for the calculation of spin-phonon coupling, in this work, we have employed a set of criteria and intuitively selected vibrational modes to perform the spin-phonon coupling analysis. The approach provided here not only reduces the computational cost significantly but also suggests chemical intuition to improve the performance of this class of compounds. Our calculations reveal that low-energy vibrational modes govern the magnetisation relaxation in these SIMs. A flexible first coordination sphere found on some of the complexes was found to be responsible for low-energy vibrations that flip the magnetisation, reducing the TB values drastically (complexes 2 and 3). On the other hand, a rigid first coordination sphere and a stiff ligand framework move the spin-vibrational coupling that causes the relaxation to lie beyond the secondary coordination sphere, resulting in an increase in TB values. Our calculations also reveal that not only the atoms in the first coordination sphere but also those in the secondary coordination sphere affect the performance of the SMMs. Learning from this exercise, we have undertaken several in silico models based on these vibrations to improve the TB values. Some of these predictions were correlated with literature precedents, offering confidence in the methodology employed. To this end, our comprehensive investigation, involving twenty-three molecules/models and five sets of geometries for pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) single-ion magnets (SIMs), unveils a treasure trove of chemically sound design clues, poised to enhance the TB values in this fascinating molecular realm.

Selective fluoride sensing by a novel series of lanthanide-based one-dimensional coordination polymers through intramolecular proton transfer

A novel series of one-dimensional coordination polymers (CPs) is achieved via a facile one-pot synthesis strategy employing the nitrate salts of trivalent lanthanides, a pentadentate chelating ligand, and triphenylphosphine oxide at a controlled stoichiometry under ambient conditions. All the CPs are characterized comprehensively using spectroscopic, X-ray crystallographic and magnetometric studies. The CPs are found to be thermally stable up to a significantly high temperature and resistant to water for an indefinite time. They are photoactive and exhibit selective fluoride ion (F-) sensing with excellent efficiency both colorimetrically and fluorimetrically in the solid-state as well as in solution. The presence of F- concomitantly sensitizes the photoluminescence enhancement and visual decolourization of the CPs in solution owing to the ground-state intra-molecular proton transfer. The photophysical response of the CPs to F- in solution was found to be instantaneous (<30 s). The sensitivity of detection is observed to be significantly high over a wide range of F- concentrations, covering the beneficial and detrimental domains of F- concentrations in drinking water. The limit of detection (LoD) under ambient conditions was found to be in the micromolar (μM) range-the best being 0.22 μM found using UV-vis spectrometry and 7.5 μM using fluorimetry. In comparison, the USEPA standard cut-off for the upper limit of F- concentration in drinking water is 211 μM, and the LoD of measuring F- concentration using the USEPA standard method using a fluoride-selective electrode is 26.3 μM. The CPs display markedly high selectivity toward F- with negligible-to-no interference from the commonly abundant ions (Cl-, Br-, I-, CH3CO2-, CO32-, SO42-, HPO42-, NH4+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+) in terms of UV-vis spectral change. Moreover, they also exhibit solid-state IR-spectrometric sensitivity towards F- under ambient conditions.

The effect of magnetic coupling along the magnetic axis on slow magnetic relaxation in DyIII complexes with D5h configuration based on an aggregation-induced-emission-active ligand

The adjustment of crystal symmetry and intramolecular magnetic coupling is of great importance for the construction of high-performance single-molecule magnets. By using an aggregation-induced-emission-active pyridine-carbohydrazone-based Schiff base ligand and phosphine oxides, four dinuclear and one one-dimensional DyIII-based complexes, [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(Bu3PO)2Cl2]·2CH3CN·2H2O (1), [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(Cy3PO)2Cl2] (2), [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(MePA)2Cl2]·2CH3OH (3), [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(Ph3PO)2Cl2]2 (4) and [Dy2(TPE-pc)2(DPPO)Cl2]n (5) (H2TPE-pc = (E)-N'-(2-hydroxy-5-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)benzylidene)picolinohydrazide, MePA = N-phenyl-N',N''-bis(morpholinyl) phosphoric triamide, DPPO = piperazine-1,4-diylbis(diphenyl phosphine oxide)), were isolated. All complexes are made up of an enol oxygen-bridged Dy2 unit, where DyIII ions possess a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry with pseudo D5h symmetry. Magnetic measurements reveal that intramolecular DyIII-DyIII couplings are ferromagnetic and all complexes display a significant slow magnetic relaxation phenomenon below 30 K under a zero dc field. Ab initio calculations indicate that the anisotropic magnetic axes of all DyIII ions are approximately perpendicular to the higher-order symmetric axes in all complexes, and that DyIII-DyIII magnetic couplings along the magnetic axes effectively suppress the ground state quantum tunneling effect of magnetization and promote the occurrence of slow magnetic relaxation. Raman relaxation prevails in all complexes. In addition, the H2TPE-pc ligand shows an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect; however, all complexes exhibit an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a homoaxially phosphine oxide coordinated pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complex

We report the synthesis of [(L)Dy^III(Cy₃PO)₂]·[BPh₄] (1-Dy) (where H₂L = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-benzoylhydrazone and Cy = cyclohexyl) which crystallized in the triclinic, P1̄ space group. The local geometry around Dy(III) in 1-Dy was found to be pentagonal bipyramidal (pseudo-D_5h). The AC magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on 1-Dy and on its diluted 1-Y(Dy) samples showed a typical single-molecule magnet signature revealed by the appearance of AC-frequency dependent out-of-phase susceptibility signals in the absence of a static magnetic field. The out-of-phase AC susceptibility signals were well resolved on the application of a small magnetic field (H_DC = 500 Oe) and yielded an energy barrier for magnetization flipping of U_eff/k_B = 50 K for the diluted derivative. The magnetic studies on 1-Dy and 1-Y(Dy) and data analysis further confirm that Raman and QTM under-barrier magnetic relaxations play a crucial role in lowering U_eff despite the almost axial nature of the Dy(III) ion in 1-Dy. We have rationalized these observations through detailed ab initio calculations performed on the X-ray crystal structure of 1-Dy.

[MII(H2dapsc)]-[Cr(CN)6] (M = Mn, Co) Chain and Trimer Complexes: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Non-Covalent Interactions and Magnetic Properties

Four new heterometallic complexes combining [M^II(H₂dapsc)]²⁺ cations with the chelating H₂dapsc {2,6-diacetylpyridine-bis(semicarbazone)} Schiff base ligand and [Cr(CN)₆]^3- anion were synthesized: {[M^II(H₂dapsc)]Cr^III(CN)₆K(H₂O)_2.5(EtOH)_0.5}_n·1.2n(H₂O), M = Mn (1) and Co (2), {[Mn(H₂dapsc)]₂Cr(CN)₆(H₂O)₂}Cl·H₂O (3) and {[Co(H₂dapsc)]₂Cr(CN)₆(H₂O)₂}Cl·2EtOH·3H₂O (4). In all the compounds, M(II) centers are seven-coordinated by N₃O₂ atoms of H₂dapsc in the equatorial plane and N or O atoms of two apical -CN/water ligands. Crystals 1 and 2 are isostructural and contain infinite negatively charged chains of alternating [M^II(H₂dapsc)]²⁺ and [Cr^III(CN)₆]^3- units linked by CN-bridges. Compounds 3 and 4 consist of centrosymmetric positively charged trimers in which two [M^II(H₂dapsc)]²⁺ cations are bound through one [Cr^III(CN)₆]^3- anion. All structures are regulated by π-stacking of coplanar H₂dapsc moieties as well as by an extensive net of hydrogen bonding. Adjacent chains in 1 and 2 interact also by coordination bonds via a pair of K⁺ ions. The compounds containing Mn^II (1, 3) and Co^II (2, 4) show a significant difference in magnetic properties. The ac magnetic measurements revealed that complexes 1 and 3 behave as a spin glass and a field-induced single-molecule magnet, respectively, while 2 and 4 do not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation in zero and non-zero dc fields. The relationship between magnetic properties and non-covalent interactions in the structures 1-4 was traced.

Rigid N3O2-Pentadentate Ligand-Assisted Octacoordinate Mononuclear Ln(III) Complexes: Syntheses, Characterization, and Slow Magnetization Relaxation

A series of air-stable mononuclear octacoordinate Ln(III) complexes, [(L)Ln(TPPO)₃]OTf (Ln = Y (1·Y); Gd (1·Gd); Tb (1·Tb); Dy (1·Dy); Ho (1·Ho); and Er (1·Er)) and [(L)Ln(TPPO)(NO₃)] (Ln = Y (2·Y) and Dy (2·Dy)), are synthesized employing a rigid N₃O₂-pentadentate chelating ligand as the basis ligand and meridional ancillary ligands (where H₂L = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-benzoylhydrazone, TPPO = triphenylphosphine oxide, and OTf^- = trifluoromethanesulfonate). All the complexes are synthesized under aerobic conditions and characterized comprehensively by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic techniques. Magnetic property investigation on the polycrystalline solid samples of 1·Ln (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) and 2·Dy are reported. A field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior was observed for the Dy derivatives. 1·Dy exhibits the highest effective energy barrier of magnetization reversal, U _eff/k _B = 47 K under H _dc = 1 kOe among the complexes presented herein.

Synthesis, Structure, and Zero-Field SMM Behavior of Homometallic Dy2, Dy4, and Dy6 Complexes

The synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of three Dy^III complexes of different nuclearity, [Dy₂(H₂L)₂(NO₃)] [NO₃]·2H₂O·CH₃OH (1), [Dy₄(HL)₂(piv)₄(OH)₂] (2), and [Dy₆(H₂L)₃(μ₃-OH)(μ₃-CO₃)₃(CH₃OH)₄(H₂O)₈] 5Cl·3H₂O (3) [(H₄L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide)], are described. This variety of complexes with the same ligand could be obtained by playing with the metal-to-ligand molar ratio, the type of Dy^III salt, the kind of base, and the presence/absence of coligand. 1 is a dinuclear complex, while 2 is a tetranuclear assembly with a butterfly-shaped topology. 3 is a homometallic hexanuclear complex that exhibits a propeller-shaped topology. Interestingly, in this complex 3, three atmospheric carbon dioxide molecules are trapped in the form of carbonate ions, which assist in holding the hexanuclear complex together. All of the complexes reveal a slow relaxation of magnetization even in zero applied field. Complex 1 is a zero-field SMM with an effective energy barrier (U_eff) of magnetization reversal equal to 87(1) K and a relaxation time of τ₀ = 6.4(3) × 10^-9 s. Under an applied magnetic field of 0.1 T, these parameters change to U_eff = 101(3) K, τ₀ = 2.5(1) × 10^-9 s. Complex 2 shows zero-field SMM behavior with U_eff = 31(2) K, τ₀ = 4.2(1) × 10^-7 s or τ₀₁ = 2(1) × 10^-7 s, U_eff1 = 37(8) K, τ₀₂ = 5(6) × 10^-5 s, and U_eff2 = 8(4) by considering two Orbach relaxation processes, while 3, also a zero-field SMM, shows a double relaxation of magnetization [U_eff1 = 62.4(3) K, τ₀₁ = 4.6(3) × 10^-8 s, and U_eff1 = 2(1) K, τ₀₂ = 4.6(2) × 10^-5 s]. The ab initio calculations indicated that in these complexes, the Kramer's ground doublet is characterized by an axial g-tensor with the prevalence of the m_J = ±15/2 component, as well as that due to the weak magnetic coupling between the metal centers, the magnetic relaxation, which is dominated by the single Dy^III centers rather than by the exchange-coupled states, takes place via Raman/Orbach or TA-QTM. Moreover, theoretical calculations support a toroidal magnetic state for complex 2.

Magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and lanthanide ions in pentagonal bipyramidal geometry

The magnetic anisotropy associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) coordination sphere is examined on the basis of experimental and theoretical investigations. The origin and the characteristics of this anisotropy are discussed in relation to the electronic configuration of the metal ions. The effects of crystal field, structural distortion, and a second-coordination sphere on the observed anisotropies for transition meal and lanthanide ions are outlined. For the Ln derivatives, we focus on compounds showing SMM-like behavior (i.e. slow relaxation of their magnetization) in order to highlight the essential chemical and structural parameters for achieving strong axial anisotropy. The use of PBP complexes to impart controlled magnetic anisotropy in polynuclear species such as SMMs or SCMs is also addressed. This review of the magnetic anisotropies associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal coordination sphere for transition metal and lanthanide ions is intended to highlight some general trends that can guide chemists towards designing a compound with specific properties.

Cyano-Bridged Dy(III) and Ho(III) Complexes with Square-Wave Structure of the Chains

Four new cyano-bridged DyIII-CrIII, DyIII-FeIII, HoIII-CrIII and HoIII-FeIII bimetallic coordination polymers were synthesized by the reaction of [Ln(H2dapsc)(H2O)4](NO3)3 (Ln = Dy, Ho); H2dapsc = 2,6-diacetylpyridinebis(semicarbazone)) with K3[M(CN)6] (M = Cr, Fe) in H2O, resulting in the substitution of two water molecules in the coordination sphere of rare earth by paramagnetic tricharged hexacyanides of Fe and Cr. The complexes are isostructural and consist of alternating [Ln(H2dapsc)(H2O)2]3+ and [M(CN)6]3− units linked by bridges of two cis-cyano ligands of the anion to form square-wave chains. The ac magnetic measurements revealed that the DyCr and DyFe complexes are field-induced single molecule magnets, while their Ho analogs do not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation.

Modulating the Structures and Magnetic Properties of Dy(III) Single-Molecule Magnets through Acid-Base Regulation

Chemical modulation on the structures and physical properties of the coordination complexes is of great interest for the preparation of new functional materials. By changing the acidity or basicity of the reaction medium, the deprotonation degree of a multidentate ligand with multiple active protons, H₄daps (H₄daps = N',N'″-((1E,1'E)-pyridine-2,6-diylbis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(2-hydroxybenzohydrazide)), can be regulated on purpose. With this ligand of different deprotonation and charges, three new Dy^III complexes ([Dy(H₃daps)(CH₃COO)₂(EtOH)]·CH₃COOH (1Dy), [Dy₂(H₂daps)₂(EtOH)₂(H₂O)₂(MeOH)₂](CF₃SO₃)₂·(H₂O)₂ (2Dy), and [Dy₃(H₁daps)₂(H₂daps)(μ₃-OH)(EtOH)(H₂O)] (3Dy)) of different nuclearities (mono-, di-, and trinuclear for 1Dy to 3Dy, respectively) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Analyses on the related bond lengths and resulting hydrogen bond modes in the complexes provide the details of the deprotonation position and the charge of the ligands, which can be in the form of H₃daps^-, H₂daps^2-, and H₁daps^3-. Interestingly, the more deprotonated ligand can act as a bridging ligand between the Dy^III centers using the phenol and/or carbonyl oxygen atoms, which leads to the multinuclear structures. Magnetic studies on these complexes revealed that complex 1Dy is a field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM), while complexes 2Dy and 3Dy show SMM behavior under a zero dc field.

In Situ Assembled Polynuclear Zinc Oxo Clusters Using Modified Schiff Bases as Ligands

A series of different cores and nuclearity zinc metal clusters 1-5 have been synthesized using Zn(ClO4)2·6H2O, Schiff-base primary ligands, and dibenzoyl methane (DBM) or monoethanolamine (MEA) as co-ligand in a room-temperature reaction. The structure of the complexes is characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Among them, (1) [Zn(L1)(DBM)] is mononuclear; (2) [Zn4(L2)2(DBM)4], (3) [Zn4(L2)4(H2O)2(ClO4)2]·2CH2Cl2, and (4) [Zn4(L3)2(DBM)4] have a cubane core; and (5) [Zn4(L4)4(MEA)2(ClO4)2] has a ladderlike core structure. Compounds 1-5 have also been characterized using UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopies. For an in-depth understanding of the absorption spectra of 1 and 3, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed, which suggest that the transitions correspond to the π → π* intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) transitions.

Effects of strong coordination bonds at the axial or equatorial positions on magnetic relaxation for pentagonal bipyramidal dysprosium(iii) single-ion magnets

Pentagonal bipyramidal dysprosium(iii) complexes with different strong coordination bonds at axial or equatorial positions show a significant variation in their magnetic relaxation behavior.

Effect of the Transition Metal Ions on the Single-Molecule Magnet Properties in a Family of Air-Stable 3d-4f Ion-Pair Compounds with Pentagonal Bipyramidal Ln(III) Ions

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are expected to be promising candidates for the applications of high-density information storage materials and quantum information processing. Lanthanide SMMs have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their excellent performance. It has always been interesting but not straightforward to study the relaxation and blocking mechanisms by embedding 3d ions into 4f SMMs. Here we report a family of air-stable 3d-4f ion-pair compounds, YFe (1), DyCr (2), DyFe (3), DyCo (4), and Dy_0.04Y_0.96Fe (5), composed of pentagonal bipyramidal (D_5h) Ln^III cations and transition metallocyanate anions. The ion-pair nature makes the dipole-dipole interactions almost the only component of the magnetic interactions that can be clarified and analytically resolved under proper approximation. Therefore, this family provides an intuitive opportunity to investigate the effects of 3d-4f and 4f-4f magnetic interactions on the behavior of site-resolved 4f SMMs. Dynamic magnetic measurements of 1 under a 4 kOe external field reveal slow magnetic relaxation originating from the isolated [Fe^III]_LS (S = ¹/₂) ions. Under zero dc field, compounds 2-5 show similar magnetic relaxation processes coming from the separated pentagonal bipyramidal (D_5h) Dy^III ions with high Orbach barriers of 592(5), 596(4), 595(3), and 606(4) K, respectively. Comparatively, both compounds 3 and 5 exhibit two distinct relaxation processes, respectively from the [Fe^III]_LS and Dy^III [U_eff = 596(4) K for 3 and 610(7) K for 5] ions, under a 4 kOe dc field. The dipolar interactions between the neighboring TM^III (TM = transition metal, Cr^III or [Fe^III]_LS) and Dy^III ions were revealed to have little effect on the thermal relaxation in compounds 2, 3, and 5, or the coexistence of the two separate relaxation processes in compounds 3 and 5 under a 4 kOe dc field, but they significantly affect the quantum tunneling of magnetization and the magnetic hysteresis behavior of 2 and 3 at low temperatures compared to those of 4.

Magnetic behavior of the novel pentagonal-bipyramidal erbium(III) complex (Et3NH)[Er(H2DAPS)Cl2]: high-frequency EPR study and crystal-field analysis

We report the synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the new heptacoordinated mononuclear erbium(III) complex (Et₃NH)[Er(H₂DAPS)Cl₂] (H₄DAPS = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-(salicylhydrazone)) (1). The coordination polyhedron around the Er(III) ion features a slightly distorted pentagonal bipyramid formed by the pentagonal N₃O₂ chelate ring of the H₂DAPS ligand in the equatorial plane and two apical chloride ligands. Detailed high-frequency/high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR) studies of 1 result in the precise determination of the crystal field (CF) splitting energies (0, 290 and 460 GHz) and effective g-values of the three lowest Kramers doublets (KDs) of the Er(III) ion. The obtained HF-EPR data are in good agreement with the results from CF analysis for the Er(III) ion based on the simulation of the dc magnetic data of 1. The results from dynamic susceptibility measurements indicate that there is no slow relaxation of magnetisation behaviour. This observation is discussed in terms of the electronic structure of 1 obtained from experimental and theoretical results.

Novel Lanthanide (III) Complexes Derived from an Imidazole-Biphenyl-Carboxylate Ligand: Synthesis, Structure and Luminescence Properties

A series of neutral mononuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(HL)₂(NO₃)₃] (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho) with rigid bidentate ligand, HL (4'-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid) were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The coordination compounds have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, powder X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis. According to X-ray diffraction, all the complexes are a series of isostructural compounds crystallized in the P2/n monoclinic space group. Additionally, solid-state luminescence measurements of all complexes show that [Eu(HL)₂(NO₃)₃] complex displays the characteristic emission peaks of Eu(III) ion at 593, 597, 615, and 651 nm.

A Series of Novel Pentagonal-Bipyramidal Erbium(III) Complexes with Acyclic Chelating N3O2 Schiff-Base Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetism

A series of six seven-coordinate pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) erbium complexes, with acyclic pentadentate [N3O2] Schiff-base ligands, 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-(4-methoxybenzoylhydrazone) [H2DAPMBH], or 2,6-diacethylpyridine bis(salicylhydrazone) [H4DAPS], and various apical ligands in different charge states were synthesized: [Er(DAPMBH)(C2H5OH)Cl] (1); [Er(DAPMBH)(H2O)Cl]·2C2H5OH (2); [Er(DAPMBH)(CH3OH)Cl] (3); [Er(DAPMBH)(CH3OH)(N3)] (4); [(Et3H)N]+[Er(H2DAPS)Cl2]- (5); and [(Et3H)N]+[Y0.95Er0.05(H2DAPS)Cl2]- (6). The physicochemical properties, crystal structures, and the DC and AC magnetic properties of 1-6 were studied. The AC magnetic measurements revealed that most of Compounds 1-6 are field-induced single-molecule magnets, with estimated magnetization energy barriers, Ueff ≈ 16-28 K. The experimental study of the magnetic properties was complemented by theoretical analysis based on ab initio and crystal field calculations. An experimental and theoretical study of the magnetism of 1-6 shows the subtle impact of the type and charge state of the axial ligands on the SMM properties of these complexes.

A trapped hexaaqua CoII complex between the polyanionic sheets of decavanadate reveals high axial anisotropy and field induced SIM behaviour

In this work, we report an inorganic compound [{Co(H₂O)₆}²⁺{Na₄V₁₀O₂₈}^2-] (1) in which the polyanionic sheets of decavanadate play the role of a diamagnetic matrix that reduces the dipolar-dipolar and spin-spin interactions between [Co(H₂O)₆]⁺² units to suppress the fast tunnelling of magnetization. Structural analysis reveals that each [Co(H₂O)₆]⁺² complex is surrounded by four decavanadates and separated by a large internuclear distance (9 Å). It was also found that the adjacent decavanadates are connected via sodium ions and form a 2D sheet of the inorganic layer in which the [Co(H₂O)₆]²⁺ ions are present in between two layers. Detailed dc (direct current) and ac (alternating current) magnetic measurements disclose the presence of large easy-axis anisotropy (D = -102 cm^-1) and field induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour with a spin reversal barrier of U_eff = 50 K. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the relaxation time reveals that the Raman and QTM processes mainly play an important role rather than the thermally activated Orbach process in the overall relaxation dynamics of the studied compound. To analyse the electronic structure and magnetic properties of compound 1, ab initio calculations were performed which further support the experimental observations. Notably, the U_eff value of 1 represents the highest energy barrier reported for POM based SMMs with transition metal ions to date.

Strong Equatorial Crystal Field Enhances the Axial Anisotropy and Energy Barrier for Spin Reversal Process in Yb2 Single Molecule Magnets

The importance of equatorial crystal fields on magnetic anisotropy of ytterbium single molecule magnets (SMMs) is observed for the first time. Herein, we report three similar dinuclear ytterbium complexes with the formula [Yb₂ (3-OMe-L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ]⋅DMF (1), [Yb₂ (3-H-L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ]⋅DMF⋅H₂ O (2), and [Yb₂ (3-NO₃ -L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ] (3), [where 3-X-H₂ L=N'-(2-hydroxy-3-X-benzylidene)picolinohydrazide, X=OMe (1), H (2) NO₂ (3)]. Detailed magnetic measurements reveal the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the Yb centers and a field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization in all complexes. A higher energy barrier for spin reversal was observed for complex 1 (U_eff =50 K) and it decreases in the order of 2 (47 K) to 3 (40 K). Notably, complex 1 shows a remarkable energy barrier within the frequency range of 1-850 Hz reported for Yb-based SMMs. Further, ab initio calculations show a higher axial anisotropy and lower quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) in the ground state for 1 compared to 2 and 3. It was also observed that the presence of a strong crystal field in the equatorial plane (when the ∡ O1-Yb-O3 bond angle is close to 90°) enhances the axial anisotropy and improves the SMM behavior in the studied complexes. Both the experimental and theoretical analysis of relaxation dynamics discloses that Raman and QTM play major role on slow relaxation process for all complexes. To provide more insight into the exchange interactions, broken-symmetry DFT calculations were performed.

The comparative studies on the magnetic relaxation behaviour of the axially-elongated pentagonal-bipyramidal dysprosium and erbium ions in similar one-dimensional chain structures

A family of cyano-bridged 3d-4f 1D chain compounds, {RE[TM(CN)6(2-PNO)5]}·(H2O)4 {RE = YIII, TM = [FeIII]LS (1); RE = DyIII, TM = CoIII (3); RE = ErIII, TM = [FeIII]LS (4), CoIII (5); 2-PNO = 2-picoline-N-oxide} and {RE[TM(CN)6(2-PNO)5]} {RE = DyIII, TM = [FeIII]LS (2)}, were synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that compounds 1 and 3-5 are isostructural, while compound 2 has a similar 1D chain structure with a different chain to chain arrangement. An axially-elongated pentagonal bipyramidal (D5h) coordination geometry is formed with five 2-PNO ligands in the equatorial plane and two [TM(CN)6]3- on the apical sites around the rare earth ions in these compounds. A comparison of the magnetic relaxation behaviour in detail reveals that it is more favorable for the Er (4 and 5) than the Dy analogues (2 and 3) to exhibit SIM properties in this axially-elongated D5h coordination environment. Under zero dc field, ac susceptibility measurements show that the Dy analogues have no magnetic relaxation behaviour, while the Er analogues exhibit frequency dependence despite the strong QTM effect. Under a 1 kOe dc field, the Er analogues generally show 1-2 orders of magnitude longer relaxation time at each selected temperature and a higher relaxation energy barrier than the Dy analogues. And the RECo compounds (3 and 5) show a more suppressed QTM effect than the corresponding REFe (2 and 4) compounds, which may be ascribed to the elimination of the fluctuation field from the neighbouring [FeIII]LS ions. The ab initio calculations indicate the misplacement between the orientation of the main magnetic axis and the structural axis in the Dy analogues, and the relative consistency in the Er analogues, which should be the source of the Er analogues showing better SIM properties than the Dy analogues.

Ten-Coordinate Lanthanide [Ln(HL)(L)] Complexes (Ln = Dy, Ho, Er, Tb) with Pentadentate N3O2-Type Schiff-Base Ligands: Synthesis, Structure and Magnetism

A series of five neutral mononuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(HL)(L)] (Ln = Dy3+, Ho3+ Er3+ and Tb3+) with rigid pentadentate N3O2-type Schiff base ligands, H2LH (1-Dy, 3-Ho, 4-Er and 6-Tb complexes) or H2LOCH3, (2-Dy complex) has been synthesized by reaction of two equivalents of 1,1′-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))dibenzohydrazine (H2LH, [H2DAPBH]) or 1,1′-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))di-4-methoxybenzohydrazine (H2LOCH3, [H2DAPMBH]) with common lanthanide salts. The terbium complex [Tb(LH)(NO3)(H2O)2](DME)2 (5-Tb) with one ligand H2LH was also obtained and characterized. Single crystal X-ray analysis shows that complexes 1–4 have the composition {[Ln3+(HL)−(L)2−] solv} and similar molecular structures. In all the compounds, the central Ln3+ ion is chelated by two interlocked pentadentate ligands resulting in the coordination number of ten. Each lanthanide ion is coordinated by six nitrogen atoms and four oxygen atoms of the two N3O2 chelating groups forming together a distorted bicapped square antiprismatic polyhedron N6O4 with two capping pyridyl N atoms in the apical positions. The ac magnetic measurements reveal field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior of the two dysprosium complexes (with barriers of Ueff = 29 K at 800 Oe in 1-Dy and Ueff = 70 K at 300 Oe in 2-Dy) and erbium complex (Ueff = 87 K at 1500 Oe in 4-Er); complex 3-Ho with a non-Kramers Ho3+ ion is SMM-silent. Although 2-Dy differs from 1-Dy only by a distant methoxy-group in the phenyl ring of the ligand, their dynamic magnetic properties are markedly different. This feature can be due to the difference in long-range contributions (beyond the first coordination sphere) to the crystal-field (CF) potential of 4f electrons of Dy3+ ion that affects magnetic characteristics of the ground and excited CF states. Magnetic behavior and the electronic structure of Ln3+ ions of 1–4 complexes are analyzed in terms of CF calculations.

The first pentagonal-bipyramidal vanadium(III) complexes with a Schiff-base N3O2 pentadentate ligand: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

A series of three mononuclear pentagonal-bipyramidal V(iii) complexes with the equatorial pentadentate N3O2 ligand (2,6-diacethylpyridinebis(benzoylhydrazone), H2DAPBH) in the different charge states (H2DAPBH0, HDAPBH1-, DAPBH2-) and various apical ligands (Cl-, CH3OH, SCN-) were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically: [V(H2DAPBH)Cl2]Cl·C2H5OH (1), [V(HDAPBH)(NCS)2]·0.5CH3CN·0.5CH3OH (2) and [V(DAPBH)(CH3OH)2]Cl·CH3OH (3). All three complexes reveal paramagnetic behavior, resulting from isolated S = 1 spins with positive zero-field splitting energy expected for the high-spin ground state of the V3+ (3d2) ion in a PBP coordination. Detailed high-field EPR measurements for compound 3 show that its magnetic properties are best described by using the spin Hamiltonian with the positive ZFS energy (D = +4.1 cm-1) and pronounced dimer-like antiferromagnetic spin coupling (J = -1.1 cm-1). Theoretical analysis based on superexchange calculations reveals that the long-range spin coupling between distant V3+ ions (8.65 Å) is mediated through π-stacking contacts between the planar DAPBH2- ligands of two neighboring [V(DAPBH)(CH3OH)2]+ complexes.

Seven-coordinate LnIII complexes assembled from a bulky MesacacH ligand: their synthesis, structure, photoluminescence and SMM behaviour

The reaction of a bulky acetyl acetone ligand 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (MesacacH) with hydrated lanthanide chlorides in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(Mesacac)3(DMF)] (Ln = Dy (1); Tb (2); Y0.91Dy0.09 (3); and Er (4)). The molecular structures of these complexes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometries of the LnIII centre were analysed by SHAPE analysis which revealed a capped octahedral geometry in 1-4. Photoluminescence studies showed ligand-sensitized green emissions for 2 with an appreciable quantum yield of 0.83%. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 3 were performed. The dynamic magnetic study revealed that complex 1 exhibits zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization without showing a clear maximum in the out-of-phase ac susceptibility plots. However, magnetic dilution of 1 with the YIII metal ion (complex 3) and/or the application of a dc magnetic field induces a strong frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility signals with χ''M peaks in the 3-10 K temperature range, thus supporting field-induced SMM behaviour of 1. The relaxation process takes place through a combination of the Orbach and Raman mechanisms. The fitting of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time to the equation τ-1 = τ0-1 exp(-Ueff/kBT) + BTn, allows the extraction of the effective energy barrier Ueff/kB = 70 K (48.7 cm-1) and pre-exponential parameter of τ0 = 2.7 × 10-7 s for the Orbach mechanism (first term) and the parameters B = 0.04 s-1 K-n and n = 6.11, for the Raman mechanism (second term).

Alignment of Axial Anisotropy in a 1D Coordination Polymer shows Improved Field Induced Single Molecule Magnet Behavior over a Mononuclear Seven Coordinated FeII Complex

Herein, we report a CN-bridged alternating Fe^II -Ni^II 1D chain to ensure the alignment of axial anisotropy and improve the single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in seven coordinated Fe^II compound. The chain was constructed from hepta coordinated Fe(II) complex as an anisotropic building unit and diamagnetic nickel tetra cyanate as a bridging ligand. The magnetic measurements show the easy-axis anisotropy of the seven coordinated Fe(II) complex and field induced SMM behavior with spin reversal energy barrier U_eff =61(2) K (42 cm^-1 ) and pre-exponential relaxation time τ₀ =1.9×10^-8  s. The detailed analysis of the relaxation dynamics discloses that the Orbach process plays an important role in slow relaxation of magnetization for this compound. Notably, this example represents a remarkable energy barrier observed in hepta coordinated Fe(II) SMMs. The ab initio calculations estimate the magnitude of axial anisotropy and show the parallel orientation of the anisotropic axis throughout the 1D polymeric chain. In addition, it is also reported that the presence of weak π accepter ligands in the distorted axial position enhance the easy-axis anisotropy.

Dysprosium-based complexes with a flat pentadentate donor: a magnetic and ab initio study

The reactivity of the well-known pentadentate N3O2 Schiff base H2L (2,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyliminomethyl)pyridine) towards a lanthanoid metal, in this case DyIII, has been investigated for the first time. This reactivity markedly depends on the pH of the medium and, accordingly, two different complexes, [Dy(HL)(NO3)2]·H2O (1·H2O) and [Dy(L)(NO3)(EtOH)(H2O)]·2H2O (2·2H2O), could be isolated from dysprosium(iii) nitrate and H2L. In addition, reaction of H2L with dysprosium(iii) chloride in methanol yields [Dy(HL')2][Dy(L)(Cl2)] (3), where H2L' ((6-(2-hydroxyphenyliminomethyl)-2-methoxyhydroxymethyl)pyridine) is an N2O2 hemiacetal donor derived from the partial hydrolysis of the H2L ligand, and subsequent addition of the methanol solvent to the carbonyl group. This latter reaction has been firstly observed for a lanthanoid metal. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 1·1.15Py·0.3CH3C6H5, 2·2H2O and 3 show that the Schiff base is acting as a nearly flat pentadentate donor in all the cases, this behaviour being independent of the deprotonation degree of the phenolic oxygen atoms, both mono- or bisdeprotonated. Complexes 1·1.15Py·0.3CH3C6H5 and 2·2H2O show DyN3O6 cores, with distorted geometries closer to spherical tricapped trigonal prism or spherical capped square antiprism for 1·1.15Py·0.3CH3C6H5 and 2·2H2O, respectively. In the case of 3, the [Dy(HL')2]+ cation shows a dysprosium ion in an N4O4 triangular dodecahedron environment, while the [Dy(L)(Cl2)]- anion displays a DyN3O2Cl2 core with distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. Moreover, attempts to dilute 1·H2O with yttrium yielded single crystals of (Et3NH)[Dy0.09Y0.91(L)(NO3)2] (4), where the Schiff base shows a similar pentadentate coordination mode. Dynamic magnetic studies of 1·H2O, 2·2H2O and 3 show that 2·2H2O and 3 present field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetisation, with Ueff barriers of 46.1(9) and 31.0(7) K for 2·2H2O and 3, respectively, while 1·H2O does not exhibit frequency-dependent peaks of the out of phase susceptibility, even in the presence of an external dc magnetic field. By contrast, the dilute sample 4 behaves as a SIM at zero dc field, with an energy barrier of ca. 49 K. Ab initio calculations using CASSCF methods including spin-orbit effects qualitatively support the obtained magnetic results, indicating that axiality is not the only factor that should be taken into account in order to increase effective energy barriers.

Pentagonal Bipyramidal Ln(III) Complexes Containing an Axial Phosphine Oxide Ligand: Field-induced Single-ion Magnetism Behavior of the Dy(III) Analogues

A series of neutral homologous complexes [(L)Ln(Cy₃PO)Cl] {where Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3), and Er (5)} and [(L)Dy(Ph₃PO)Cl] (4) [H₂L = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-benzoylhydrazone] were isolated. In these complexes, the central lanthanide ion possesses a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry with an overall pseudo D_5h symmetry. The coordination environment around the lanthanide ion comprises of three nitrogen and two oxygen donors in an equatorial plane. The axial positions are taken up by a phosphine oxide (O donor) and a chloride ion. Among these compounds, the Dy(III) (3 and 4) analogues were found to be field-induced single-ion magnets.

Ferrocene-Supported Compartmental Ligands for the Assembly of 3d/4f Complexes

Site-specific coordination ligands, also known as compartmental ligands, have been used for the preparation of heterometallic complexes. These ligands, by virtue of possessing specific binding sites, can encapsulate different metal ions in their coordination pockets. Such compartmental ligands have been widely used for the preparation of heterometallic 3d/4f complexes which have applications in molecular magnetism. This Review summarizes our efforts in the use of ferrocene-based compartmental ligands for the preparation of heterometallic 3d/4f complexes, some of which are single-molecule or single-ion magnets.

Structural, magnetic, redox and theoretical characterization of seven-coordinate first-row transition metal complexes with a macrocyclic ligand containing two benzimidazolyl N-pendant arms

A structurally new heptadentate derivative of a 15-membered pyridine-based macrocycle containing two benzimidazol-2-yl-methyl N-pendant arms (L = 3,12-bis((1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)methyl)-6,9-dioxa-3,12,18-triazabicyclo[12.3.1]octadeca-1(18),14,16-triene) was synthesized and its complexes with the general formula [M(L)](ClO4)2·1.5CH3NO2 (M = MnII (1), FeII (2), CoII (3) and NiII (4)) were thoroughly investigated. X-ray crystal structures confirmed that all complexes are seven-coordinate with axially compressed pentagonal bipyramidal geometry having the largest distortion for NiII complex 4. FeII, CoII and NiII complexes 2, 3 and 4 show rather large magnetic anisotropy manifested by moderate to high obtained values of the axial zero-field splitting parameter D (7.9, 40.3, and -17.2 cm-1, respectively). Magneto-structural correlation of the FeII, CoII and NiII complexes with L and with previously studied structurally similar ligands revealed a significant impact of the functional group in pendant arms on the magnetic anisotropy especially that of the CoII and NiII complexes and some recommendations concerning the ligand-field design important for anisotropy tuning in future. Furthermore, complex 3 showed field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior described with the Raman (C = 507 K-n s-1 for n = 2.58) relaxation process. The magnetic properties of the studied complexes were supported by theoretical calculations, which very well correspond with the experimental data of magnetic anisotropy. Electrochemical measurements revealed high positive redox potentials for M3+/2+ couples and high negative redox potentials for M2+/+ couples, which indicate the stabilization of the oxidation state +ii expected for the σ-donor/π-acceptor ability of benzimidazole functional groups.

Influence of anion induced geometry change in Zn(ii) on the magnetization relaxation dynamics of Dy(iii) in Zn–Dy–Zn complexes

A series of [Zn₂Dy(L₁)₂(OAc)₄](X) where X = (NO₃)_0.92(Br)_0.08 (1), ClO₄ (2), Cl (3) and PF₆ (4) complexes were synthesized and their dc and ac magnetic data investigated. Experimental results are validated through MOLCAS calculations.

One-dimensional lanthanide coordination polymers supported by pentadentate Schiff-base and diphenyl phosphate ligands: single molecule magnet behavior and photoluminescence

End-to-End Azido-Bridged Lanthanide Chain Complexes (Dy, Er, Gd, and Y) with a Pentadentate Schiff-Base [N3O2] Ligand: Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetism

The syntheses, structure and magnetic properties are reported for five novel 1D polymeric azido-bridged lanthanide complexes with the general formula {[Ln(DAPMBH)(N₃)C₂H₅OH]C₂H₅OH}_n where H₂DAPMBH = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(4-methoxybenzoylhydrazone)-a new pentadentate pyridine-base [N₃O₂] ligand and Ln = Dy (1), Y_0.930Dy_0.070 (2), Er (3), Y_0.923Er_0.077 (4), and Gd (5). X-ray diffraction analysis of 1-5 show that the central lanthanide atoms are eight-coordinated with the N₅O₃ donor set originating from the ligand DAPMBH, one coordinated ethanol molecule and two end-to-end type N₃^- bridges connecting the metal centers into infinite chain. The [LnN₅O₃] coordination polyhedron can be regarded as a distorted dodecahedron (D_2d). AC magnetic measurements revealed that compounds 1-4 show field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior, with estimated energy barriers U_eff ≈ 47-17 K. The experimental study of magnetic properties was complemented by theoretical analysis based on crystal-field calculations. Direct current magnetic susceptibility studies revealed marginally weak intrachain exchange interaction between Ln³⁺ ions mediated by the end-to-end azide bridging groups (J ≈ -0.015 cm^-1 for 5). Comparative analysis of static and dynamic magnetic properties of magnetically concentrated (1, 3) and diluted (2, 4) Dy and Er compounds showed that, despite fascinating 1D azido-bridged chain structure, compounds 1 and 3 are not single-chain magnets; their magnetic behavior is largely due to single-ion magnetic anisotropy of individual Ln³⁺ ions.

Slow Magnetic Relaxation, Antiferromagnetic Ordering, and Metamagnetism in MnII (H2 dapsc)-FeIII (CN)6 Chain Complex with Highly Anisotropic Fe-CN-Mn Spin Coupling

Reactions of [Mn(H₂ dapsc)Cl₂ ]⋅H₂ O (dapsc=2,6- diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone)) with K₃ [Fe(CN)₆ ] and (PPh₄ )₃ [Fe(CN)₆ ] lead to the formation of the chain polymeric complex {[Mn(H₂ dapsc)][Fe(CN)₆ ][K(H₂ O)_3.5 ]}_n ⋅1.5n H₂ O (1) and the discrete pentanuclear complex {[Mn(H₂ dapsc)]₃ [Fe(CN)₆ ]₂ (H₂ O)₂ }⋅4 CH₃ OH⋅3.4 H₂ O (2), respectively. In the crystal structure of 1 the high-spin [Mn^II (H₂ dapsc)]²⁺ cations and low-spin hexacyanoferrate(III) anions are assembled into alternating heterometallic cyano-bridged chains. The K⁺ ions are located between the chains and are coordinated by oxygen atoms of the H₂ dapsc ligand and water molecules. The magnetic structure of 1 is built from ferrimagnetic chains, which are antiferromagnetically coupled. The complex exhibits metamagnetism and frequency-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility, indicating single-chain magnetic behavior with a Mydosh-parameter φ=0.12 and an effective energy barrier (U_eff /k_B ) of 36.0 K with τ₀ =2.34×10^-11  s for the spin relaxation. Detailed theoretical analysis showed highly anisotropic intra-chain spin coupling between [Fe^III (CN)₆ ]^3- and [Mn^II (H₂ dapsc)]²⁺ units resulting from orbital degeneracy and unquenched orbital momentum of [Fe^III (CN)₆ ]^3- complexes. The origin of the metamagnetic transition is discussed in terms of strong magnetic anisotropy and weak AF interchain spin coupling.

Correlation between Slow Magnetic Relaxations and Molecular Structures of Dy(III) Complexes with N5O4 Nona-Coordination

A series of Dy(III) mononuclear complexes [DyA2L]+ (L denotes Schiff base N5 ligand that occupies equatorial positions and A− denotes bidentate anionic O-donor ligands such as NO3− (1), AcO− (2), and acac− (3)) were synthesized to investigate the correlation between the slow magnetic relaxation phenomena and the coordination structures around Dy(III). The Dy(III) ion in each complex is in a nona-coordination with the anionic O-donor ligand occupying up- and down-side positions of the N5 equatorial plane. 2 and 3 show slow magnetic relaxation phenomena under a zero bias-field condition, and all complexes showed slow magnetic relaxation under the applied 1000-Oe bias-field conditions. Arrhenius analyses revealed that the ΔE/kB, the barrier height for magnetization flipping, increases in this order, with the values of 24.1(6), 85(3), and 140(15) K. The effects of the exchanging axial ligands on the magnetic anisotropy were discussed together with the DFT calculations.

Mononuclear lanthanide complexes assembled from a tridentate NNO donor ligand: design of a DyIII single-ion magnet

The reaction of a tridentate NNO donor ligand, 4-nitro-2-((2-(pyridine-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol (HL) with lanthanide(iii) nitrates in the presence of triethylamine afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(NO3)(L)2(HOCH3)] (Ln = Gd; (1) Tb; (2), Dy; (3), and Ho (4). The mononuclear complexes were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies which revealed a spherical tricapped trigonal prism geometry with a pseudo D3h symmetry around the LnIII centre. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies have been performed on these complexes. Field-induced single-ion magnet behaviour was observed in the DyIII analogue with an effective energy barrier and an pre-exponential factor of Δ/kB = 68(2) K and τ0 = 1.8 × 10-7 s, respectively.

Lanthanide(III)-Based Single-Ion Magnets

Mononuclear lanthanide-based single-ion magnets (SIMs) are known since 2003 with the discovery of SIM properties in a bis-(phthalocyaninato)lanthanide complex. A recent report on [Dy(Cp^ttt)₂][BC₆F₅] indicating that it exhibits the highest known blocking temperature (60 K) has spurred fresh interest in this area. In this article, we discuss about the various requirements of lanthanide-based SIMs along with representative examples. Specifically, we describe the complexes whose coordination numbers vary from 2 to 8. We also discuss the representative examples of organometallic lanthanide complexes that can function as molecular magnets.
