Cerium Tetrakis(tropolonate) and Cerium Tetrakis(acetylacetonate) Are Not Diamagnetic but Temperature-Independent Paramagnets

The Counterintuitive Relationship between Orbital Energy, Orbital Overlap, and Bond Covalency in CeF62- and CeCl62

The 4f orbitals of Ce(IV) have shown appreciably enhanced covalent mixing with ligand orbitals relative to those of Ce(III). Here, X-ray spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and theoretical methods are used to investigate 4f covalency in CeF62- and CeCl62-. These techniques show covalent mixing between Ce 4f and F 2p orbitals to be about 25% less than mixing between Ce 4f and Cl 3p orbitals, placing CeF62- among the most ionic Ce(IV) compounds to-date. However, ligand field analysis using the experimental data shows significantly higher 4f orbital overlap with the F 2p orbitals compared to the Cl 3p. This result is counterintuitive since the Ce-F bonds display less 4f covalency despite their higher orbital overlap, and greater overlap is traditionally associated with enhanced bond covalency. The weaker covalency is attributed to the large energy gap between Ce 4f and F 2p orbitals strongly counteracting the higher orbital overlap. These results highlight that only a concerted consideration of both atomic orbital overlap and energy matching in f-element systems leads to an accurate picture of their bonding.

Isolation and redox reactivity of cerium complexes in four redox states

The chemistry of lanthanides is limited to one electron transfer reactions due to the difficulty of accessing multiple oxidation states. Here we report that a redox-active ligand combining three siloxides with an arene ring in a tripodal ligand can stabilize cerium complexes in four different redox states and can promote multielectron redox reactivity in cerium complexes. Ce(iii) and Ce(iv) complexes [(LO₃)Ce(THF)] (1) and [(LO₃)CeCl] (2) (LO₃ = 1,3,5-(2-OSi(O^tBu)₂C₆H₄)₃C₆H₃) were synthesized and fully characterized. Remarkably the one-electron reduction and the unprecedented two-electron reduction of the tripodal Ce(iii) complex are easily achieved to yield reduced complexes [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][(LO₃)Ce(THF)] (3) and [K₂{(LO₃)Ce(Et₂O)₃}] (5) that are formally "Ce(ii)" and "Ce(i)" analogues. Structural analysis, UV and EPR spectroscopy and computational studies indicate that in 3 the cerium oxidation state is in between +II and +III with a partially reduced arene. In 5 the arene is doubly reduced, but the removal of potassium results in a redistribution of electrons on the metal. The electrons in both 3 and 5 are stored onto δ-bonds allowing the reduced complexes to be described as masked "Ce(ii)" and "Ce(i)". Preliminary reactivity studies show that these complexes act as masked Ce(ii) and Ce(i) in redox reactions with oxidizing substrates such as Ag⁺, CO₂, I₂ and S₈ effecting both one- and two-electron transfers that are not accessible in classical cerium chemistry.

Structure and bonding patterns in heterometallic organometallics with linear Ln-Pd-Ln motifs

Complexes with short intermetallic distances between transition metal fragments and lanthanide (Ln) fragments are fascinating objects of study, owing to the ambiguity of the nature of the interaction. The addition of the divalent lanthanide fragments Cp*₂Ln(OEt₂) (Ln = Sm or Yb) to a Pd(ii) complex bearing the deprotonated form of the redox-active, non-symmetrical ligand, 2-pyrimidin-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole (Hbimpm), leads to two isostructural complexes, of the general formula (Cp*₂Ln)₂[μ-Pd(pyridyl)₂] (Ln = Sm (4) and Yb (5)). These adducts have interesting features, such as unique linear Ln-Pd-Ln arrangements and short Ln-Pd distances, which deviate from the expected lanthanide contraction. A mixed computational and spectroscopic study into the formation of these adducts gathers important clues as to their formation. At the same time, thorough characterization of these complexes establishes the +3 oxidation state of all the involved Ln centers. Detailed theoretical computations demonstrate that the apparent deviation from lanthanide contraction is not due to any difference in the intermetallic interaction between the Pd and the Ln, but that the fragments are joined together by electrostatic interactions and dispersive forces. This conclusion contrasts with the findings about a third complex, Cp*₂Yb(μ-Me)₂PdCp* (6), formed during the reaction, which also possesses a short Yb-Pd distance. Studies at the CASSCF level of theory on this complex show several orbitals containing significant interactions between the 4f and 4d manifolds of the metals. This demonstrates the need for methodical and careful analyses in gauging the intermetallic interaction and the inadequacy of empirical metrics in describing such phenomena.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Bridging Cerium(IV) Nitride Complex

Complexes featuring lanthanide-ligand multiple bonds are rare and highly reactive. They are important synthetic targets to understand 4f/5d-bonding in comparison to d-block and actinide congeners. Herein, the isolation and characterization of a bridging cerium(IV)-nitride complex: [(TriNOx)Ce(Li₂μ-N)Ce(TriNOx)][BAr^F₄] is reported, the first example of a molecular cerium-nitride. The compound was isolated by deprotonating a monometallic cerium(IV)-ammonia complex: [Ce^IV(NH₃)(TriNOx)][BAr^F₄]. The average Ce═N bond length of [(TriNOx)Ce(Li₂μ-N)Ce(TriNOx)][BAr^F₄] was 2.117(3) Å. Vibrational studies of the ¹⁵N-isotopomer exhibited a shift of the Ce═N═Ce asymmetric stretch from ν = 644 cm^-1 to 640 cm^-1, and X-ray spectroscopic studies confirm the +4 oxidation state of cerium. Computational analyses showed strong involvement of the cerium 4f shell in bonding with overall 16% and 11% cerium weight in the σ- and π-bonds of the Ce═N═Ce fragment, respectively.

Deconvolution of metal apportionment in bulk metal-organic frameworks

We report a general route to decipher the apportionment of metal ions in bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We demonstrate this route in Mg_1-xNi_x-MOF-74, where we uncover all eight possible atomic-scale Mg/Ni arrangements through identification and quantification of the distinct chemical environments of ¹³C-labeled carboxylates as a function of the Ni content. Here, we use magnetic susceptibility, bond pathway, and density functional theory calculations to identify local metal bonding configurations. The results refute the notion of random apportionment from solution synthesis; rather, we reveal that only two of eight Mg/Ni arrangements are preferred in the Ni-incorporated MOFs. These preferred structural arrangements manifest themselves in macroscopic adsorption phenomena as illustrated by CO/CO₂ breakthrough curves. We envision that this nondestructive methodology can be further applied to analyze bulk assembly of other mixed-metal MOFs, greatly extending the knowledge on structure-property relationships of MOFs and their derived materials.

Homoleptic Uranium-Bis(acyl)phosphide Complexes

The first uranium bis(acyl)phosphide (BAP) complexes were synthesized from the reaction between sodium bis(mesitoyl)phosphide (Na(^mesBAP)) or sodium bis(2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoyl)phosphide (Na(^trippBAP)) and UI₃(1,4-dioxane)_1.5. Thermally stable, homoleptic BAP complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, when appropriate, for the elucidation of the electronic structure and bonding of these complexes. EPR spectroscopy revealed that the BAP ligands on the uranium center retain a significant amount of electron density. The EPR spectrum of the trivalent U(^trippBAP)₃ has a rhombic signal near g = 2 (g₁ = 2.03; g₂ = 2.01; and g₃ = 1.98) that is consistent with the EPR-observed unpaired electron being located in a molecular orbital that appears ligand-derived. However, upon warming the complex to room temperature, no resonance was observed, indicating the presence of uranium character.

Covalency in actinide(iv) hexachlorides in relation to the chlorine K-edge X-ray absorption structure

Chlorine K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) in actinideIV hexachlorides, [AnCl6]2- (An = Th-Pu), is calculated with relativistic multiconfiguration wavefunction theory (WFT). Of particular focus is a 3-peak feature emerging from U toward Pu, and its assignment in terms of donation bonding to the An 5f vs. 6d shells. With or without spin-orbit coupling, the calculated and previously measured XANES spectra are in excellent agreement with respect to relative peak positions, relative peak intensities, and peak assignments. Metal-ligand bonding analyses from WFT and Kohn-Sham theory (KST) predict comparable An 5f and 6d covalency from U to Np and Pu. Although some frontier molecular orbitals in the KST calculations display increasing An 5f-Cl 3p mixing from Th to Pu, because of energetic stabilization of 5f relative to the Cl 3p combinations of the matching symmetry, increasing hybridization is neither seen in the WFT natural orbitals, nor is it reflected in the calculated bond orders. The appearance of the pre-edge peaks from U to Pu and their relative intensities are rationalized simply by the energetic separation of transitions to 6d t2g versus transitions to weakly-bonded and strongly stabilized a2u, t2u and t1u orbitals with 5f character. The study highlights potential pitfalls when interpreting XANES spectra based on ground state Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals.

X-ray absorption spectra of f-element complexes: insight from relativistic multiconfigurational wavefunction theory

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, coupled with ab initio calculations, has emerged as the state-of-the-art tool for elucidating the metal-ligand bonding in f-element complexes. This highlight presents recent efforts in calculating XANES spectra of lanthanide and actinide compounds with relativistic multiconfiguration wavefunction approaches that account for differences in donation bonding in the ground state (GS) versus a core-excited state (ES), multiplet effects, and spin-orbit-coupling. With the GS and ES wavefunctions available, including spin-orbit effects, an arsenal of chemical bonding tools that are popular among chemists can be applied to rationalize the observed intensities in terms of covalent bonding.

Electronic structure studies reveal 4f/5d mixing and its effect on bonding characteristics in Ce-imido and -oxo complexes

This study presents the role of 5d orbitals in the bonding, and electronic and magnetic structure of Ce imido and oxo complexes synthesized with a tris(hydroxylaminato) [((2-^tBuNO)C₆H₄CH₂)₃N]³⁻ (TriNO_x³⁻) ligand framework, including the reported synthesis and characterization of two new alkali metal-capped Ce oxo species. X-ray spectroscopy measurements reveal that the imido and oxo materials exhibit an intermediate valent ground state of the Ce, displaying hallmark features in the Ce L_III absorption of partial f-orbital occupancy that are relatively constant for all measured compounds. These spectra feature a double peak consistent with other formal Ce(iv) compounds. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal enhanced levels of temperature-independent paramagnetism (TIP). In contrast to systems with direct bonding to an aromatic ligand, no clear correlation between the level of TIP and f-orbital occupancy is observed. CASSCF calculations defy a conventional van Vleck explanation of the TIP, indicating a single-reference ground state with no low-lying triplet excited state, despite accurately predicting the measured values of f-orbital occupancy. The calculations do, however, predict strong 4f/5d hybridization. In fact, within these complexes, despite having similar f-orbital occupancies and therefore levels of 4f/5d hybridization, the d-state distributions vary depending on the bonding motif (Ce Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> O vs. CeN) of the complex, and can also be fine-tuned based on varying alkali metal cation capping species. This system therefore provides a platform for understanding the characteristic nature of Ce multiple bonds and potential impact that the associated d-state distribution may have on resulting reactivity.

Ce(iv) complexes with multiple bonds display similar f⁰ fractions, but different f/d hybridization, 5d-orbital energies, and TIP levels.

Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl Complexes of Cerium(IV): Synthesis, Reactivity, and Electrochemistry

Treatment of Cp*₂CeCl₂K(THF) with alkali-metal alkoxides and siloxides in the presence of hexachloroethane generates the monomeric bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) cerium(IV) complexes Cp*₂Ce(OR)₂ (Cp* = C₅Me₅; R = Et, iPr, CH₂tBu, tBu, SiMe₃, or SiPh₃). Large substituents R trigger ligand scrambling to half-sandwich complexes Cp*Ce(OR)₃, which could be isolated for R = tBu and SiPh₃. Similar reactions with sodium aryloxide NaOAr (OAr = OC₆H₃iPr₂-2,6) led to Cp*₂Ce(OAr)Cl. Treatment of tris(cyclopentadienyl) complexes Cp^R₃CeCl (Cp^H = Cp = C₅H₅; Cp^Me = C₅H₄Me) with NaOAr afforded Cp^Me₂Ce(OAr)₂ and Cp₃Ce(OAr). The cerium(IV) complexes display a pseudotetrahedral geometry in the solid state. Cyclic voltammetry revealed mostly chemically reversible as well as electrochemically quasi-reversible redox processes with potentials ranging from -0.84 to -1.61 V versus Fc/Fc⁺. Switching from sandwich to half-sandwich complexes decreased the electrochemical potentials drastically, showing better stabilization of the cerium(IV) center in the case of Cp*Ce(OR)₃ than in the case of Cp*₂Ce(OR)₂. Enhanced stabilization of the cerium +IV oxidation state could be further demonstrated in the series alkoxy > siloxy > aryloxy as well as C₅Me₅ > C₅HMe₄.

A Uranium(II) Arene Complex That Acts as a Uranium(I) Synthon

Two-electron reduction of the amidate-supported U(III) mono(arene) complex U(TDA)₃ (2) with KC₈ yields the anionic bis(arene) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(TDA)₂] (3) (TDA = N-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)pivalamido). EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and calculations using DFT as well as multireference CASSCF methods all provide strong evidence that the electronic structure of 3 is best represented as a 5f⁴ U(II) metal center bound to a monoreduced arene ligand. Reactivity studies show 3 reacts as a U(I) synthon by behaving as a two-electron reductant toward I₂ to form the dinuclear U(III)-U(III) triiodide species [K[2.2.2]cryptand][(UI(TDA)₂)₂(μ-I)] (6) and as a three-electron reductant toward cycloheptatriene (CHT) to form the U(IV) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(η⁷-C₇H₇)(TDA)₂(THF)] (7). The reaction of 3 with cyclooctatetraene (COT) generates a mixture of the U(III) anion [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(TDA)₄] (1-crypt) and U(COT)₂, while the addition of COT to complex 2 instead yields the dinuclear U(IV)-U(IV) inverse sandwich complex [U(TDA)₃]₂(μ-η⁸:η³-C₈H₈) (8). Two-electron reduction of the homoleptic Th(IV) amidate complex Th(TDA)₄ (4) with KC₈ gives the mono(arene) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][Th(TDA)₃(THF)] (5). The C-C bond lengths and torsion angles in the bound arene of 5 suggest a direduced arene bound to a Th(IV) metal center; this conclusion is supported by DFT calculations.

Probing Multiconfigurational States by Spectroscopy: The Cerium XAS L3 -edge Puzzle

The Ce L₃ edge XAS spectra of CeO₂ and cerocene [Ce(C₈ H₈ )₂ ] were calculated with relativistic ab-initio multireference wavefunction approaches capable of reproducing the observed spectra accurately. The study aims to resolve the decades-long puzzle regarding the relationship between the number and relative intensities of the XAS peaks and the 4f electron occupation in the ground state (GS) versus the core-excited states (ESs). CeO₂ and cerocene exemplify the different roles of covalent bonding and wavefunction configurational composition in the observed intensity patterns. Good agreement is found between the calculated GS 4f-shell occupations and the value derived from XAS measurements using peak areas (n_f ). The identity of the two-peaked Ce L₃ edge is fully rationalized from the perspective of the relaxed wavefunctions for the GS and core ESs. The states underlying the different peaks differ from each other in a surprisingly simple way that can be associated with 4f¹ vs. 4f⁰ sub-configurations. Furthermore, part of one of the cerocene spectral peaks is associated with 4f² sub-configurations. The pattern therefore reveals excited states that can be interpreted in terms of Ce IV and III oxidation numbers, as long assumed, with Ce II states additionally appearing in the cerocene spectrum. While this work demonstrates the rough accuracy of the conventional approach to determining n_f from Ce L₃ -edge XAS, limitations are highlighted in terms of the ultimate accuracy of this approach and the potential of observing new types of excited states. The need to determine the sources of n_f by calculations, is stressed.

Intermediate Valence States in Lanthanide Compounds

Over more than 50 years, intermediate valence states in lanthanide compounds have often resulted in unexpected or puzzling spectroscopic and magnetic properties. Such experimental singularities could not be rationalised until new theoretical models involving multiconfigurational electronic ground states were established. In this minireview, the different singularities that have been observed among lanthanide complexes are highlighted, the models used to rationalise them are detailed and how such electronic effects may be adjusted depending on energy and symmetry considerations is considered. Understanding and tuning the ground-state multiconfigurational behaviour in lanthanide complexes may open new doors to modular and unusual reactivities.

Isolation and characterization of a covalent CeIV-Aryl complex with an anomalous 13C chemical shift

The synthesis of bona fide organometallic CeIV complexes is a formidable challenge given the typically oxidizing properties of the CeIV cation and reducing tendencies of carbanions. Herein, we report a pair of compounds comprising a CeIV - Caryl bond [Li(THF)4][CeIV(κ2-ortho-oxa)(MBP)2] (3-THF) and [Li(DME)3][CeIV(κ2-ortho-oxa)(MBP)2] (3-DME), ortho-oxa = dihydro-dimethyl-2-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-oxazolide, MBP2- = 2,2'-methylenebis(6-tert-butyl-4-methylphenolate), which exhibit CeIV - Caryl bond lengths of 2.571(7) - 2.5806(19) Å and strongly-deshielded, CeIV - Cipso 13C{1H} NMR resonances at 255.6 ppm. Computational analyses reveal the Ce contribution to the CeIV - Caryl bond of 3-THF is ~12%, indicating appreciable metal-ligand covalency. Computations also reproduce the characteristic 13C{1H} resonance, and show a strong influence from spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects on the chemical shift. The results demonstrate that SOC-driven deshielding is present for CeIV - Cipso 13C{1H} resonances and not just for diamagnetic actinide compounds.

Lanthanoid Complexes as Molecular Materials: The Redox Approach

The development of molecular materials with novel functionality offers promise for technological innovation. Switchable molecules that incorporate redox-active components are enticing candidate compounds due to their potential for electronic manipulation. Lanthanoid metals are most prevalent in their trivalent state and usually redox-activity in lanthanoid complexes is restricted to the ligand. The unique electronic and physical properties of lanthanoid ions have been exploited for various applications, including in magnetic and luminescent materials as well as in catalysis. Lanthanoid complexes are also promising for applications reliant on switchability, where the physical properties can be modulated by varying the oxidation state of a coordinated ligand. Lanthanoid-based redox activity is also possible, encompassing both divalent and tetravalent metal oxidation states. Thus, utilization of redox-active lanthanoid metals offers an attractive opportunity to further expand the capabilities of molecular materials. This review surveys both ligand and lanthanoid centered redox-activity in pre-existing molecular systems, including tuning of lanthanoid magnetic and photophysical properties by modulating the redox states of coordinated ligands. Ultimately the combination of redox-activity at both ligands and metal centers in the same molecule can afford novel electronic structures and physical properties, including multiconfigurational electronic states and valence tautomerism. Further targeted exploration of these features is clearly warranted, both to enhance understanding of the underlying fundamental chemistry, and for the generation of a potentially important new class of molecular material.

Cerium(iv) complexes with guanidinate ligands: intense colors and anomalous electronic structures

A series of cerium(iv) mixed-ligand guanidinate–amide complexes, {[(Me₃Si)₂NC(NⁱPr)₂]_xCe^IV[N(SiMe₃)₂]_3−x}⁺ (x = 0–3), was prepared by chemical oxidation of the corresponding cerium(iii) complexes, where x = 1 and 2 represent novel complexes. The Ce(iv) complexes exhibited a range of intense colors, including red, black, cyan, and green. Notably, increasing the number of the guanidinate ligands from zero to three resulted in significant redshift of the absorption bands from 503 nm (2.48 eV) to 785 nm (1.58 eV) in THF. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra indicated increasing f occupancy (n_f) with more guanidinate ligands, and revealed the multiconfigurational ground states for all Ce(iv) complexes. Cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrated less stabilization of the Ce(iv) oxidation state with more guanidinate ligands. Moreover, the Ce(iv) tris(guanidinate) complex exhibited temperature independent paramagnetism (TIP) arising from the small energy gap between the ground- and excited states with considerable magnetic moments. Computational analysis suggested that the origin of the low energy absorption bands was a charge transfer between guanidinate π orbitals that were close in energy to the unoccupied Ce 4f orbitals. However, the incorporation of sterically hindered guanidinate ligands inhibited optimal overlaps between Ce 5d and ligand N 2p orbitals. As a result, there was an overall decrease of ligand-to-metal donation and a less stabilized Ce(iv) oxidation state, while at the same time, more of the donated electron density ended up in the 4f shell. The results indicate that incorporating guanidinate ligands into Ce(iv) complexes gives rise to intense charge transfer bands and noteworthy electronic structures, providing insights into the stabilization of tetravalent lanthanide oxidation states.

A series of cerium(iv) mixed-ligand guanidinate-amide complexes, {[(Me₃Si)₂NC(NⁱPr)₂]_xCe^IV[N(SiMe₃)₂]_3−x}+ (x = 0−3), was prepared by chemical oxidation and studied spectroscopically and computationally, revealing trends in 4f/5d orbital occupancies.

Homoleptic cerium tris(dialkylamido)imidophosphorane guanidinate complexes

We report the synthesis of a new potassium tris(piperdino)imidophosphorane N,N'-dicyclohexylguanidinate, K[CyGNP(pip)3], and describe the synthesis and characterization of the tris-homoleptic compounds, [Ce(CyGNP(pip)3)3], 1-Ce, and [Ce(CyGNP(pip)3)3][BPh4], 2-Ce. The latter is an unusual cationic tetravalent cerium complex. Cyclic voltammetry studies of 1-Ce and 2-Ce revealed Epc potentials of -1.56 V and -1.81 V, and Epa potentials of -0.78 V and -0.66 V (200 mV s-1; THF, vs. Fc0/+), respectively. Compounds 1-Ce and 2-Ce were studied by L3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), and the fit of the spectrum of 2-Ce revealed a white-line multiplet with an nf value of 0.50(2).

Comparison of tetravalent cerium and terbium ions in a conserved, homoleptic imidophosphorane ligand field

A redox pair of Ce4+ and Ce3+ complexes has been prepared that is stabilized by the [(NP(1,2-bis- t Bu-diamidoethane)(NEt2))]1- ligand. Since these complexes are isostructural to the recently reported isovalent terbium analogs, a detailed structural and spectroscopic comparative analysis was pursued via Voronoi-Dirichlet polyhedra analysis, UV-vis-NIR, L3-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), cyclic voltammetry, and natural transitions orbital (NTO) analysis and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The electrochemical studies confirm previous theoretical studies of the redox properties of the related complex [K][Ce3+(NP(pip)3)4] (pip = piperidinyl), 1-Ce(PN). Complex 1-Ce(PN*) presents the most negative E pc of -2.88 V vs. Fc/Fc+ in THF of any cerium complex studied electrochemically. Likewise 1-Tb(PN*) has the most negative E pc for electrochemically interrogated terbium complexes at -1.79 V vs. Fc/Fc+ in THF. Complexes 1-Ce(PN*) and 2-Ce(PN*) were also studied by L3-edge X-ray absorption near edges spectroscopy (XANES) and a comparison to previously reported spectra for 1-Tb(PN*), 2-Tb(PN*), 1-Ce(PN), and, [Ce4+(NP(pip)3)4], 2-Ce(PN), demonstrates similar n f values for all the tetravalent lanthanide complexes. According to the natural bond orbital analysis, a greater covalent character of the M-L bonds is found in 2-Ce(PN*) than in 1-Ce(PN*), in agreement with the shorter Ce-N bonds in the tetravalent counterpart. The greater contribution of Ce orbitals in the Ce-N bonding and, specifically, the higher participation of 4f electrons accounts for the stronger covalent interactions in 2-Ce(PN*) as compared to 2-Tb(PN*).

The chemical and physical properties of tetravalent lanthanides: Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy

The thermochemistry, descriptive chemistry, spectroscopy, and physical properties of the tetravalent lanthanides (Pr, Nd, Tb and Dy) in extended phases, gas phase, solution, and as isolable molecular complexes are presented.

Isolation of a TMTAA-Based Radical in Uranium bis-TMTAA Complexes

We report the synthesis, characterization, and electronic structure studies of a series of thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) bis-tetramethyltetraazaannulene complexes. These sandwich complexes show remarkable stability towards air and moisture, even at elevated temperatures. Electrochemical studies show the uranium complex to be stable in three different oxidation states; isolation of the oxidized species reveals a rare case of a non-innocent tetramethyltetraazaannulene (TMTAA) ligand.
