Influence of Radicals on Magnetization Relaxation Dynamics of Pseudo-Octahedral Lanthanide Iminopyridyl Complexes

Strategies to quench quantum tunneling of magnetization in lanthanide single molecule magnets

Enhancing blocking temperature (T_B) is one of the holy grails in Single Molecule Magnets(SMMs), as any future potential application in this class of molecules is directly correlated to this parameter. Among many factors contributing to a reduction of T_B value, Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetisation (QTM), a phenomenon that is a curse or a blessing based on the application sought after, tops the list. Theoretical tools based on density functional and ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO methods have played a prominent role in estimating various spin Hamiltonian parameters and establishing the mechanism of magnetization relaxation in this class of molecules. Particularly, various strategies to quench QTM effects go hand-in-hand with experiments, and different methods proposed to quell QTM effects are scattered in the literature. In this perspective, we have explored various approaches that are proposed in the literature to quench QTM effects, and these include the role of (i) local symmetry of lanthanides, (ii) super-exchange interaction in {3d-4f} complexes, (iii) direct-exchange interaction in {radical-4f} and metal-metal bonded complexes to suppress the QTM, (iv) utilizing external stimuli such as an electric field or pressure to modulate the QTM and (v) avoiding QTM effects by stabilising toroidal states in 4f and {3d-4f} clusters. We believe the strategies summarized here will help to design new-generation SMMs.

Zero-field slow magnetic relaxation behavior of Zn2Dy in a family of trinuclear near-linear Zn2Ln complexes: synthesis, experimental and theoretical investigations

We hereby report a series of near-linear trinuclear [Zn₂Ln^III(HL)₄(CH₃COO)]·(NO₃)₂ (where Ln^III = La (1-La), Ce (2-Ce), Nd (3-Nd), Sm (4-Sm), Tb (5-Tb), and Dy (6-Dy)) complexes with Schiff base ligand (H2L). Magnetization relaxation dynamic studies on complexes 2-Ce, 5-Tb, and 6-Dy reveal the existence of well resolved frequency dependent zero-field out-of-phase χ''_M signals, which is an indicator of a typical single-ion magnet behavior observed only for complex 6-Dy with U_eff = 43.7 K (τ₀ = 2.42 × 10^-6 s). The presence of two Zn(II) ions near the coordination geometry of Dy(III) ion in 6-Dy is likely to keep the first excited m_J levels significantly away from the ground state m_J level and is responsible for the observation of zero field slow magnetic relaxation behavior. The data collected in the presence of a magnetic field of H_dc = 2 kOe enhances the energy barrier by two-fold (88.63 K, τ₀ = 1.36 × 10^-7 s) in 6-Dy, suggesting the presence of QTM at zero field along with other under barrier relaxations, such as the Raman process. On the other hand, complex 2-Ce shows field induced slow relaxation of magnetization behavior with an effective energy barrier of 12.24 K (τ₀ = 1.89 × 10^-4 s). The CASSCF/SO-RASSI/SINGLE_ANISO based ab initio calculations using MOLCAS 8.0 code further rationalized our experimentally observed magnetization dynamics.

Experimental and theoretical insights into Co-Ln magnetic exchange and the rare slow-magnetic relaxation behavior of [CoII2Pr]2+ in a series of linear [CoII2Ln]2+ complexes

We herein report a series of near-linear trinuclear complexes [Co₂Ln(HL)₄(NO₃)](NO₃)₂ (where HL = (2-methoxy-6-[(E)-2'-hydroxymethyl-phenyliminomethyl]-phenolate) with Ln(III) = La (1), Ce (2), Pr (3)). For the comparative study, we have also included the recently reported analogous complexes of Gd(III), Tb(III), and Dy(III) (complexes 4-6) with the same H₂L ligand. The experimental nature of the dc magnetic susceptibilities profile and an empirical approach revealed that the magnetic exchange interaction between Co(II) and Ln(III) having <4f⁷ (complexes 2 and 3) is antiferromagnetic while the dominant interaction between Co(II) and Ln(III) having ≥4f⁷ (complexes 4-6) is ferromagnetic. Dynamic magnetic relaxation studies on complexes 1-3 revealed the field induced single-molecule magnetic (SMM) behavior of 1 and 3 with effective energy barriers of 10.65 K and 15.03 K respectively, for magnetic relaxation. To the best of our knowledge, 3d-Pr(III) based zero or field induced SMMs have not been reported to date. CASSCF/SO-RASSI/SINGLE_ANISO based ab initio calculations on the X-ray structures of complexes 1-6, followed by POLY_ANISO simulations, estimated the magnetic exchange coupling constants J_Co-Ln and J_Co-Co and also rationalized our experimental findings for the dynamic magnetic properties.

Effect of an axial coordination environment on quantum tunnelling of magnetization for dysprosium single-ion magnets with theoretical insight

Herein, we report two mononuclear dysprosium complexes [Dy(H₄L){B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂}₂](Cl)·MeOH (1) and [Dy(H₄L){MeOH)₂(NCS)₂}](Cl) (2) [where H₄L = 2,2'-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(N-phenylhydrazinecarboxamide)] with different axial coordination environments. The structural analysis revealed that the pentadentate H₄L ligand binds through the equatorial position in both complexes. In complex 1, the axial positions are occupied by bidentate dimethoxydiphenyleborate [B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂]^-. On the other hand, in complex 2, one axial position is occupied by two NCS^- and one MeOH molecule while another MeOH molecule is coordinated to the other axial position. Magnetic measurements disclose the presence of field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization with an energy barrier of U_eff = 30 K for 1 whereas no such effective barrier was observed in complex 2. Detailed analysis of field and temperature dependence of the relaxation time confirms the major role of Raman, QTM, and direct processes rather than the Orbach process in complex 1. It was observed that [B(OMe)₂(Ph)₂]^- provides higher axial anisotropy which slows down the QTM process (relaxation time for the QTM process is 2.70 × 10^-5 s) in 1 as compared to NCS anions and MeOH molecules in 2 (1.03 × 10^-8 s), and is responsible for the absence of an effective energy barrier in the latter complex as confirmed by ab initio calculations. The calculations also show that the presence of a large bidentate dimethoxydiphenyleborate ligand in axial positions may result in high-performance Dy-based single-ion magnets.

Six-coordinated dinuclear lanthanide(III) amide complexes: investigation of magnetization relaxation dynamics and their electronic structures

A series of rare six-coordinated dinuclear Ln(III) complexes [Ln₂(μ-Cl)₂Cl₄Li₂(L)₂(THF)₆] were structurally characterized using a bulky amide ligand (L; Ln = Gd(1), Dy(2) and Y(3)). Detailed magnetic studies disclose that a weak antiferromagnetic coupling exists within 1 (-0.09 cm^-1) and 2 (-0.07 cm^-1; -2J Hamiltonian). Additionally, this study unveils the importance of the amide ligand at the coordination site of Dy(III), which manifests a slow relaxation of magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field. This has been rationalized by detailed ab initio calculations as well as the electronic structure determination of 1 and 2.

Improving the single-molecule magnet properties of two pentagonal bipyramidal Dy3+ compounds by the introduction of both electron-withdrawing and -donating groups

Two mononuclear Dy³⁺ compounds [Dy(bmbpen-F)X] (X = Cl, 1; Br, 2) with a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) geometry were obtained from N,N'-bis-(5-methyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'-bis(5-fluoro-2-methylpyridyl)ethylenediamine (H₂bmbpen-F) and dysprosium halides. The magnetic anisotropy and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior of these PBP compounds were regulated by introducing both electron-withdrawing F atoms into the equatorial pyridine rings and electron-donating -CH₃ groups into the axial phenolic hydroxyl rings. The results of magnetic characterization show that 1 and 2 exhibit single molecule magnet behavior with magnetization reversal barriers of 990(13) and 1189(16) K under a zero dc external field and magnetic hysteresis loops up to 26 K and 36 K, respectively. The results of ab initio calculations are consistent with the experimental observations, confirming that the simultaneous introduction of electron-withdrawing groups into the equatorial positions and electron-donating groups into the axial positions can lead to PBP Dy-SMMs with improved properties.

Molecular and Electronic Structures and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior of Tris(thioether)-Iron Complexes Containing Redox-Active α-Diimine Ligands

Incorporating radical ligands into metal complexes is one of the emerging trends in the design of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). While significant effort has been expended to generate multinuclear transition metal-based SMMs with bridging radical ligands, less attention has been paid to mononuclear transition metal-radical SMMs. Herein, we describe the first α-diiminato radical-containing mononuclear transition metal SMM, namely, [κ²-PhTt^tBu]Fe(AdNCHCHNAd) (1), and its analogue [κ²-PhTt^tBu]Fe(CyNCHCHNCy) (2) (PhTt^tBu = phenyltris(tert-butylthiomethyl)borate, Ad = adamantyl, and Cy = cyclohexyl). 1 and 2 feature nearly identical geometric and electronic structures, as shown by X-ray crystallography and electronic absorption spectroscopy. A more detailed description of the electronic structure of 1 was obtained through EPR and Mössbauer spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, and DFT, TD-DFT, and CAS calculations. 1 and 2 are best described as high-spin iron(II) complexes with antiferromagnetically coupled α-diiminato radical ligands. A strong magnetic exchange coupling between the iron(II) ion and the ligand radical was confirmed in 1, with an estimated coupling constant J < -250 cm^-1 (J = -657 cm^-1, DFT). Calibrated CAS calculations revealed that the ground-state Fe(II)-α-diiminato radical configuration has significant ionic contributions, which are weighted specifically toward the Fe(I)-neutral α-diimine species. Experimental data and theoretical calculations also suggest that 1 possesses an easy-axis anisotropy, with an axial zero-field splitting parameter D in the range from -4 to-1 cm^-1. Finally, dynamic magnetic studies show that 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation behavior with an energy barrier close to the theoretical maximum, 2|D|. These results demonstrate that incorporating strongly coupled α-diiminato radicals into mononuclear transition metal complexes can be an effective strategy to prepare SMMs.

The structural manipulation of a series of Ni4 defective dicubanes: Synthesis, X-ray Structures, Magnetic and Computational analyses

We report the synthesis and characterization of four new tetranuclear Ni(ii) complexes, C1-C4, all of which exhibit defective dicubane cores. C1-C4 are derived from the same salicylaldoxime derived ligand, H2L1. Complexes C1 and C4 have isostructural cores, differing in structure only by solvate molecules. Magnetic and computational analyses have revealed that complexes C1, C2, and C4 exhibit competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions, however the different solvated species in C1 and C4 leads to notably different magnitudes in their magnetic coupling constants. Theoretical magneto-structural studies show that the pairwise magnetic exchange interaction is highly dependent on the Ni-X-Ni angle, as revealed by orbital overlap calculations.

Lanthanoid Complexes as Molecular Materials: The Redox Approach

The development of molecular materials with novel functionality offers promise for technological innovation. Switchable molecules that incorporate redox-active components are enticing candidate compounds due to their potential for electronic manipulation. Lanthanoid metals are most prevalent in their trivalent state and usually redox-activity in lanthanoid complexes is restricted to the ligand. The unique electronic and physical properties of lanthanoid ions have been exploited for various applications, including in magnetic and luminescent materials as well as in catalysis. Lanthanoid complexes are also promising for applications reliant on switchability, where the physical properties can be modulated by varying the oxidation state of a coordinated ligand. Lanthanoid-based redox activity is also possible, encompassing both divalent and tetravalent metal oxidation states. Thus, utilization of redox-active lanthanoid metals offers an attractive opportunity to further expand the capabilities of molecular materials. This review surveys both ligand and lanthanoid centered redox-activity in pre-existing molecular systems, including tuning of lanthanoid magnetic and photophysical properties by modulating the redox states of coordinated ligands. Ultimately the combination of redox-activity at both ligands and metal centers in the same molecule can afford novel electronic structures and physical properties, including multiconfigurational electronic states and valence tautomerism. Further targeted exploration of these features is clearly warranted, both to enhance understanding of the underlying fundamental chemistry, and for the generation of a potentially important new class of molecular material.

Regulating the distortion degree of the square antiprism coordination geometry in Dy–Na single ion magnets

A DyNa complex (1) and a DyNa₂ 1D chain (2) have been obtained; their square antiprism coordination geometries were changed from the bicapped triangular prism of the reported DyNa₂ complex. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit single ion magnet behavior.

Dysprosium-based complexes with a flat pentadentate donor: a magnetic and ab initio study

The reactivity of the well-known pentadentate N3O2 Schiff base H2L (2,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyliminomethyl)pyridine) towards a lanthanoid metal, in this case DyIII, has been investigated for the first time. This reactivity markedly depends on the pH of the medium and, accordingly, two different complexes, [Dy(HL)(NO3)2]·H2O (1·H2O) and [Dy(L)(NO3)(EtOH)(H2O)]·2H2O (2·2H2O), could be isolated from dysprosium(iii) nitrate and H2L. In addition, reaction of H2L with dysprosium(iii) chloride in methanol yields [Dy(HL')2][Dy(L)(Cl2)] (3), where H2L' ((6-(2-hydroxyphenyliminomethyl)-2-methoxyhydroxymethyl)pyridine) is an N2O2 hemiacetal donor derived from the partial hydrolysis of the H2L ligand, and subsequent addition of the methanol solvent to the carbonyl group. This latter reaction has been firstly observed for a lanthanoid metal. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 1·1.15Py·0.3CH3C6H5, 2·2H2O and 3 show that the Schiff base is acting as a nearly flat pentadentate donor in all the cases, this behaviour being independent of the deprotonation degree of the phenolic oxygen atoms, both mono- or bisdeprotonated. Complexes 1·1.15Py·0.3CH3C6H5 and 2·2H2O show DyN3O6 cores, with distorted geometries closer to spherical tricapped trigonal prism or spherical capped square antiprism for 1·1.15Py·0.3CH3C6H5 and 2·2H2O, respectively. In the case of 3, the [Dy(HL')2]+ cation shows a dysprosium ion in an N4O4 triangular dodecahedron environment, while the [Dy(L)(Cl2)]- anion displays a DyN3O2Cl2 core with distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. Moreover, attempts to dilute 1·H2O with yttrium yielded single crystals of (Et3NH)[Dy0.09Y0.91(L)(NO3)2] (4), where the Schiff base shows a similar pentadentate coordination mode. Dynamic magnetic studies of 1·H2O, 2·2H2O and 3 show that 2·2H2O and 3 present field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetisation, with Ueff barriers of 46.1(9) and 31.0(7) K for 2·2H2O and 3, respectively, while 1·H2O does not exhibit frequency-dependent peaks of the out of phase susceptibility, even in the presence of an external dc magnetic field. By contrast, the dilute sample 4 behaves as a SIM at zero dc field, with an energy barrier of ca. 49 K. Ab initio calculations using CASSCF methods including spin-orbit effects qualitatively support the obtained magnetic results, indicating that axiality is not the only factor that should be taken into account in order to increase effective energy barriers.

Manipulating On/Off Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy(III)-Based Photochromic Complex

Exploitation of room temperature (RT) photochromism and photomagnetism to induce single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior has potential applications toward optical switches and magnetic memories, and remains a tremendous challenge in the development of new bulk magnets. Herein, a series of chain complexes [Ln₃(H-HEDP)₃(H₂-HEDP)₃]·2H₃-TPT·H₄-HEDP·10H₂O (QDU-1; Ln = Dy (QDU-1(Dy)), Gd (QDU-1(Gd)), and Y (QDU-1(Y)); HEDP = hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate; TPT = 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine) were synthesized by solvothermal reactions. All the compounds exhibited reversible photochromic and photomagnetic behaviors via UV light irradiation at RT, induced by the photogenerated radicals via a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. More importantly, the PET process induced significant variations in magnetic interactions for the Dy(III) congener. Strong ferromagnetic coupling with remarkably slow magnetic relaxation without applied dc fields was observed between Dy^III ions and photogenerated O^• radicals, showing SMM behavior after RT illumination. For the first time, we observed the reversible RT photochromism and photomagnetism in the lanthanide-based materials. This work realized the radicals-actuated on/off SMM behavior via RT light irradiation, providing a new strategy for constructing the light-induced SMMs.

Strong antiferromagnetic coupling of the cobalt(ii)–semiquinone radical in a dinuclear complex with 2,2′-bipyrimidine ligands

A new dinuclear cobalt(ii)–semiquinone radical complex was synthesised and displayed strong antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, having −90.25 cm⁻¹ of a J value, between the cobalt(ii) centres and semiquinone radicals.

Influence of anion induced geometry change in Zn(ii) on the magnetization relaxation dynamics of Dy(iii) in Zn–Dy–Zn complexes

A series of [Zn₂Dy(L₁)₂(OAc)₄](X) where X = (NO₃)_0.92(Br)_0.08 (1), ClO₄ (2), Cl (3) and PF₆ (4) complexes were synthesized and their dc and ac magnetic data investigated. Experimental results are validated through MOLCAS calculations.

The molecular and electronic structure of an unusual cobalt NNO pincer ligand complex

The reaction of two equivalents of [Co(PMe₃)₄] (1) with one equivalent of a neutral NNO pincer ligand (L₁) led to the formation of purple-coloured single crystals. The crystal structure determination reveals the molecular structure as a cobalt dimer [Co₂(L₁)(PMe₃)₅], which is solved in the triclinic P1[combining macron] space group. Although this species appears to have a formal zero oxidation state on cobalt ions, careful analysis of the structural parameters of the L₁ reveals that the NNO ligand is reduced by three electrons; this observation has rarely been reported in the literature. Therefore, herein, more accurate description of the molecular formula [(PMe₃)₂Co^II(η⁴-L₁^3-)Co^I(PMe₃)₃] (2) was proposed. In 2, we observed an unusual η³-π-allyl-type binding mode of the pyridine ring carbon atoms of the L₁^3- ligand with the cobalt ion. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy not only reveals the presence of the mixed valent cobalt ion within 2 but also unambiguously discloses the spin state of these metal ions (Co(i) diamagnetic (low-spin) and Co(ii) paramagnetic (high-spin)). The proposed electronic structure is consistent with the magnetic moment measured at room temperature. The electronic structure of 2 was further supported by the Q-band EPR measurements performed on polycrystalline sample of 2 at 5.0 K, and the presence of two independent S = ½ states was revealed. This has been qualitatively rationalized based on the super-exchange coupling pathway observed in 2. The NMR studies performed for 2 (C₆D₆ solvent) evidently showed that the solid-state structure of 2 was maintained in solution.

Europium and ytterbium complexes with o-iminoquinonato ligands: synthesis, structure, and magnetic behavior

Complexes of divalent ytterbium (1) and europium (2) with a dianionic o-amidophenolate ligand were prepared by both the direct reduction of 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-o-iminobenzoquinone (dpp-IQ) and the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-amidophenolate with LnI2 (Ln = Yb, Eu). Oxidation of o-amidophenolates 1, 2 with one equivalent of dpp-IQ as well as the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-iminosemiquinolate with LnI2 afforded ligand mixed-valent o-iminosemiquinonato-amidophenolato complexes of trivalent ytterbium (3) and europium (4). All novel complexes 1-4 were fully characterized, including the solid state structures of 1 and 2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of paramagnetic 2-4 were examined.

Two Dy(III) Single-Molecule Magnets with Their Performance Tuned by Schiff Base Ligands

To develop new lanthanide single-molecule magnets (SMMs), two new complexes of [Dy₂(MeOH)₂(HL¹)₂(NO₃)₂]·2MeOH (1) and [Dy₆(μ₃-OH)₂(L²)₂(HL²)₂(H₂L²)₂Cl₂(EtOH)₂]Cl₂·3EtOH·CH₃CN (2) were obtained by reacting Dy(NO)₃·6H₂O with 3-amino-1,2-propanediol in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 1 and by reacting DyCl₃·6H₂O with 1,1-di(hydroxymethyl)ethylamine in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 2, respectively, in which the Schiff base ligands of 3-(((2-hydroxynaphthaen-1-yl)methylene)amino)-propane-1,2-diol (H₃L¹) and 2-(β-naphthalideneamino)-2-(hydroxylmethyl)-1-propanol (H₃L²) were in situ formed. The two Dy(III) ions in 1 are linked by two O_alkoxy atoms of two (HL¹)^2- ligands to build a dinuclear skeleton. Complex 2 presents a nearly planar hexanuclear skeleton constructed from four edge-shared triangular Dy₃ units with the two peripheral Dy₃ units consolidated by two μ₃-O bridges and the two central Dy₃ units consolidated by one μ₃-O bridge. Obviously, they exhibit a different topological arrangement resulting from the linkage of the Schiff base ligands. Both of them are typical SMMs under zero dc fields, with a U_eff/ k_B value of 34 K for 1 and 40 K for 2, respectively. Multiple processes are involved in the relaxation processes of 1 and 2. The different SMM performances of the two titled complexes reveal a tuning effect of Schiff base ligands through tuning the coordination environments and topological arrangements of dysprosium(III) ions, which is supported by the theoretical calculations.

Dinuclear lanthanide–lithium complexes based on fluorinated β-diketonate with acetal group: magnetism and effect of crystal packing on mechanoluminescence

A convenient and straightforward synthesis of a novel type of Ln–Li β-diketonates with a discrete molecular structure is presented.

Two mononuclear dysprosium(iii) complexes with their slow magnetic relaxation behaviors tuned by coordination geometry

We report here two field-induced single-ion magnets of Dy(iii), which present octahedral and pentagonal–bipyramidal coordination geometries, respectively, with their magnetic performances tuned by the coordination geometries of Dy(iii).
