Heterometallic Organic Frameworks Built from Trinuclear Indium and Cuprous Halide Clusters: Ligand-Oriented Assemblies and Iodine Adsorption Behavior

Cu(II) Coordination Polymers Containing Mixed Ligands with Different Flexibilities: Structural Diversity and Iodine Adsorption

Reactions of N,N'-bis(3-methylpyridyl)oxalamide (L1), N,N'-bis(3-methylpyridyl)adipoamide (L2) and N,N'-bis(3-methylpyridyl)sebacoamide (L3) with tricarboxylic acids and Cu(II) salts afforded {[Cu(L1)(1,3,5-HBTC)]·H2O}n (1,3,5-H3BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), 1, {[Cu1.5(L2)1.5(1,3,5-BTC)(H2O)2]·6.5H2O}n, 2, [Cu(L2)0.5(1,3,5-HBTB)]n (1,3,5-H3BTB = 1,3,5-tri(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene), 3, [Cu4(L3)(OH)2(1,3,5-BTC)2]n, 4, {[Cu3(L3)2(1,3,5-BTB)2]·2.5MeOH·2H2O}n, 5, and {[Cu3(L3)2(1,3,5-BTB)2 ]·DMF·2H2O}n, 6, which have been structurally characterized by using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-4 form a 2D layer with the {44.62}-sql topology, a 2D layer with the (4.62)2(42.62.82)-bex topology, a three-fold interpenetrated 3D net with the (412·63)-pcu topology and a 3D framework with the (410·632·83)(42·6)2(43·63) topology, respectively, whereas 5 and 6 are 3D frameworks with the (63)2(64·82)(68·85·102) topology. Complex 5 shows a better iodine adsorption factor of 290.0 mg g-1 at 60 °C for 360 min than the other ones, revealing that the flexibility of the spacer ligand governs the structural diversity and the adsorption capacity.

Low-Valent Metals in Metal-Organic Frameworks Via Post-Synthetic Modification

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide uniquely tunable, periodic platforms for site-isolation of reactive low-valent metal complexes of relevance in modern catalysis, adsorptive applications, and fundamental structural studies. Strategies for integrating such species in MOFs include post-synthetic metalation, encapsulation and direct synthesis using low-valent organometallic complexes as building blocks. These approaches have each proven effective in enhancing catalytic activity, modulating product distributions (i.e., by improving catalytic selectivity), and providing valuable mechanistic insights. In this minireview, we explore these different strategies, as applied to isolate low-valent species within MOFs, with a particular focus on examples that leverage the unique crystallinity, permanent porosity and chemical mutability of MOFs to achieve deep structural insights that lead to new paradigms in the field of hybrid catalysis.

Th6-Based Multicomponent Heterometallic Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring 6,12-Connected Topology for Iodine Adsorption

Its high coordination number and tendency to cluster make Th4+ suitable for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with novel topologies. In this work, two novel thorium-based heterometallic MOF isomers (IHEP-17 and IHEP-18) were assembled from a Th6 cluster, a multifunctional organic ligand [4-(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)benzoic acid (HPyba)], and Cu2+/Ni2+ cations via the one-pot solvothermal synthesis strategy. The framework features a 6,12-connected new topology net and contains two kinds of supramolecular cage structures, Th36M4 and Th24M2, suitable for guest exchange. Both MOF materials can efficiently adsorb I2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicate that the adsorbed iodine is uniformly distributed within the Th36M4 cage but not the Th24M2 cage in the form of I3-.

Cluster-Based Crystalline Materials for Iodine Capture

The treatment of radioactive iodine in nuclear waste has always been a critical issue of social concern. The rational design of targeted and efficient capture materials is of great significance to the sustainable development of the ecological environment. In recent decades, crystalline materials have served as a molecular platform to study the binding process and capture mechanism of iodine molecules, enabling people to understand the interaction between radioactive iodine guests and pores intuitively. Cluster-based crystalline materials, including molecular clusters and cluster-based metal-organic frameworks, are emerging candidates for iodine capture due to their aggregative binding sites, precise structural information, tunable pores/packing patterns, and abundant modifications. Herein, recent progress of different types of cluster materials and cluster-dominated metal-organic porous materials for iodine capture is reviewed. Research prospects, design strategies to improve the affinity for iodine and possible capture mechanisms are discussed.

Silver-Rich Hybrid Framework Iodide Based on [Ag8I6]2+ Clusters Displays Low-Temperature Dual Emission and Luminescence Thermochromism

Cluster-based framework metal iodides have diverse structures and excellent luminescence properties, and show promising applications in sensing and solid-state lighting. However, the design and synthesis of these materials remain great challenges because excess I^- ions introduced into the synthesis systems decrease the condensation degree of M-I units. In this work, a new strategy is developed to control the condensation behavior of Ag-I units, and a new silver-rich cluster-based framework iodide [DabcoAg₈I₆(SPh)₂]_n (1) (Dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane) has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions in the presence of silver thiophenolate (AgSPh)_n. Compound 1 features a three-dimensional (3-D) cluster-based framework with a pillared layer structure composed of cationic [Ag₈I₆]²⁺ clusters bridged by SPh^- and Dabco, and displays low-temperature dual emission and luminescence thermochromism.

Nickel(II) Coordination Polymers Supported by Bis-pyridyl-bis-amide and Angular Dicarboxylate Ligands: Role of Ligand Flexibility in Iodine Adsorption

Reactions of N‚N’-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)oxalamide (L¹), N‚N’-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)oxalamide (L²), or N,N’-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)adipoamide) (L³) with angular dicarboxylic acids and Ni(II) salts under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions afforded a series of coordination polymers: {[Ni(L¹)(OBA)(H₂O)]·H₂O}_n (H₂OBA = 4,4-oxydibenzoic acid), 1, {[Ni(L¹)(SDA)(H₂O)₂]·H₂O·CH₃OH}_n (H₂SDA = 4,4-sulfonyldibenzoic acid), 2, {[Ni(L²)(OBA)]·C₂H₅OH}_n, 3, {[Ni(L²)(OBA)]·CH₃OH}_n, 4, {[Ni₂(L²)(SDA)₂(H₂O)₃]·5H₂O}_n, 5, {[Ni₂(L²)(SDA)₂(H₂O)₃]·H₂O·2C₂H₅OH}_n, 6, {[Ni(L³)(OBA)(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O}_n, 7, {[Ni(L³)(SDA)(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O}_n, 8, and {[Ni(L³)₀.₅(SDA)(H₂O)₂]·0.5C₂H₅OH}_n, 9, which have been structurally characterized by using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 exhibits an interdigitated 2D layer with the 2,4L2 topology and 2 is a 2D layer with the sql topology, while 3 and 4 are 3D frameworks resulting from polycatenated 2D nets with the sql topology and 5 and 6 are 2-fold interpenetrated 3D frameworks with the dia topology. Complexes 7 and 8 are 1D looped chains and 9 is a 2D layer with the 3,4L13 topology. The various structural types in 1–9 indicate that the structural diversity is subject to the flexibility and donor atom position of the neutral spacer ligands and the identity of the angular dicarboxylate ligands, while the role of the solvent is uncertain. The iodine adsorption of 1–9 was also investigated, demonstrating that that the flexibility of the spacer L¹–L³ ligands can be an important factor that governs the feasibility of the iodine adsorption. Moreover, complex 9 shows a better iodine adsorption and encapsulates 166.55 mg g⁻¹ iodine in the vapor phase at 60 °C, which corresponded to 0.38 molecules of iodine per formula unit.

Sodalite Cd66-Cage-Based Metal-Organic Framework Constructed by Cd9 and Cd5 Metal-Organic Clusters

A sodalite Cd₆₆-cage-based metal-organic framework (MOF), namely, CPM-9S, has been constructed based on Cd₉ and Cd₅ metal-organic clusters (MOCs), which, to the best our knowledge, represents the first Cd-cage-based MOF that contains the highest-nuclear Cd-based MOC and the largest number of Cd²⁺ ions in a cage. The iodine adsorption performances in terms of the iodine adsorption capacity, adsorption isotherm, and adsorption kinetics, as well as the adsorption mechanism, have been further studied.

Contiguous layer based metal-organic framework with conjugated π-electron ligand for high iodine capture

Herein, a novel 3-dimensional (3D) Cu(II) metal-organic framework (MOF), [Cu₃(μ₂-O)₂(p-tr₂Ph)₂(HCOO)][NO₃]·3DMF·3H₂O (compound 1), which is constructed by directly interlocking regionalized hollow two-dimensional (2D) layers, has been conceived and solvothermally synthesized. Such a distinctive regionalized pore system effectively maintains the uniformity of the pore structure, isolates the counterions and bridging ligands in the partition layer, and endows compound 1 with high porosity. In consequence, compound 1 exhibits excellent adsorption ability of iodine in cyclohexane. The removal efficiency in cyclohexane solution (0.01 mol L^-1) can reach up to 80% in 8 min, and the absorption ability towards iodine can reach about 1.15 g g^-1. Moreover, iodine can also be controllably released in ethanol. The release rate was up to 4 × 10^-5 mol L^-1 min^-1. Furthermore, compound 1 also showed prominent recyclability due to the high stability, and the maximum sorption amount could be retained after 3 cycles. This study paves a new way towards opening up MOFs' potential application in capturing radioactive iodine to protect the environment.

Reversible Structural Transformation of CuI-TbIII Heterometallic MOFs with Highly Efficient Detection Capability toward Penicillin

A Cu^I-Tb^III heterometallic MOF, namely 1·DMF, was obtained via a coordination assembly process of isonicotinic acid with Cu^I and Tb^III. 1·DMF can be switched to 1·MeOH in methanol with a luminescent emission response. Meanwhile, 1·MeOH exhibits a reversible single-crystal transformation to 1·DMF after immersion in DMF. Both MOFs have superior physicochemical stability. The 1·DMF-based biosensor has a remarkable sensing performance toward penicillin.

A rare 4-fold interpenetrated metal-organic framework constructed from an anionic indium-based node and a cationic dicopper linker

A unique 4-fold interpenetrated metal-organic framework, TIF-1, was synthesized by combining an anionic indium node with a cationic linker. This framework shows a rare type of 4-fold interpenetrated dia network, constructed from tessellation of biangular and tetragonal type metal-organic micropores. The porosity of TIF-1 is moderate due to four-fold interpenetration and charge-balancing anions. The cationic feature of this MOF may give good efficiency for selective small anion exchange or separation. In addition, the thermal stability and moderate CO2 adsorption property of the complex were studied.

Reusable fibrous adsorbent prepared via Co-radiation induced graft polymerization for iodine adsorption

Volatile iodine released from nuclear power plant reactors is radiological hazard to environment and human's health because of their high fission yield and environmental mobility. The complexity of nuclear waste management motivated the development of solid-phase adsorbents. Herein, co-radiation induced graft polymerization (CRIGP) was employed in the graft polymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) onto polyethylene-coated polypropylene skin-core (PE/PP) fibers using electron beam (EB) irradiation. This work provides a one-step green synthetic approach to prepare iodine fibrous adsorbents without any chemical initiators or large amount of organic solvent. The original and modified PE/PP fibers were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric (TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to demonstrate the grafting of NVP onto the PE/PP fibers. The capacity of iodine absorbed by the PE/PP-g-PNVP fibers was 1237.8 mg/g after 180 min. Meanwhile, absorbents can be regenerated efficiently by two different means of ethanol elution and heating at 120 °C, respectively. Within 10 min, 94.17% and 90.12% of the iodine can be released from the PE/PP-g-PNVP fibers with these two methods, respectively. The adsorbent exhibited a long service life of at least ten adsorption-desorption cycles, suggesting that PE/PP-g-PNVP fibers might be a promising adsorbent for volatile iodine adsorption from fission products in nuclear power plant reactors.

Recent highlights and future prospects on mixed-metal MOFs as emerging supercapacitor candidates

Mixed-metal metal-organic frameworks (M-MOFs) consist of at least two different metal ions as nodes in the same framework. The incorporation of a second or more metal ions provides structural/compositional diversity, multi-functionality and stability to the framework. Moreover, the periodical array of different metal ions in the framework may alter the physical/chemical properties of M-MOFs and result in fascinating applications. M-MOFs with exciting structural features offer superior supercapacitor performances compared to single metal MOFs due to the synergic effect of different metal ions. In this review, we summarize several synthetic methods to construct M-MOFs by employing various organic ligands or metalloligands. Further, we discuss the electrochemical performance of several M-MOFs and their derived composite materials for supercapacitor applications.

A first new porous d-p HMOF material with multiple active sites for excellent CO2 capture and catalysis

In this work, a new monometallic metal-organic framework (MOF), namely {[Pb2(L)2(H2O)]·H2O}n (1), was prepared via a N,O-mixed 2-(imidazol-1-yl)terephthalic acid (H2L) ligand and Pb(ii) ions. Then, a first new porous d-p heterometallic MOF (HMOF), namely {[PbZn(L)2]·DMA·H2O}n (2), was yielded via Zn(ii) ions and MOF 1 as the precursor because of the different coordination affinity of oxygen and nitrogen atoms with various metal ions. MOF 1 is a condensed packing motif, whereas HMOF 2 is a porous three-dimensional (3D) framework with unsaturated Pb(ii) and Zn(ii) active sites, uncoordinated carboxylate oxygen atoms and two kinds of porous channels due to the introduction of Zn(ii) ions into the framework of MOF 1, which thus endowed HMOF 2 with excellent sorption and selectivity for CO2 over CH4. Moreover, HMOF 2 was explored to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the fixation of CO2 with various epoxides because of the existence of the abundant unsaturated bimetallic sites as the Lewis acid. It is hoped that this work may supply an effective strategy to build plenty of d-p HMOF materials with excellent gas adsorption and catalytic properties.

Crystal engineering of coordination-polymer-based iodine adsorbents using a π-electron-rich polycarboxylate aryl ether ligand

Novel 3D anionic heterometallic frameworks based on trinuclear CoII and trinuclear LnIII motifs displaying slow magnetic relaxation and selective adsorption of methylene blue
