Low-Valent Metals in Metal-Organic Frameworks Via Post-Synthetic Modification

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide uniquely tunable, periodic platforms for site-isolation of reactive low-valent metal complexes of relevance in modern catalysis, adsorptive applications, and fundamental structural studies. Strategies for integrating such species in MOFs include post-synthetic metalation, encapsulation and direct synthesis using low-valent organometallic complexes as building blocks. These approaches have each proven effective in enhancing catalytic activity, modulating product distributions (i.e., by improving catalytic selectivity), and providing valuable mechanistic insights. In this minireview, we explore these different strategies, as applied to isolate low-valent species within MOFs, with a particular focus on examples that leverage the unique crystallinity, permanent porosity and chemical mutability of MOFs to achieve deep structural insights that lead to new paradigms in the field of hybrid catalysis.

Single-Crystal Transformation Engineering the Spin Change of Metal-Organic Frameworks via Cluster Deconstruction

Spin crossover (SCO) materials with new architectures will expand and enrich the research in the SCO field. Here, we report two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing tetradentate organic ligands and hexatopic linkers [Ag8 X8 (CN)6 ]6- (X=Br and I), which represents the first SCO MOF with clusters as building blocks. The silver halide cluster can be further removed after reacting with lithium tetracyanoquinodimethan (LiTCNQ). Such post-synthetic modification (PSM) is realized via single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) transformation from urk to nbo topology. Accordingly, the spin state and fluorescence properties are greatly modified by cluster deconstruction. Therefore, these achievements will provide new ideas for the design of new SCO systems and the development of PSM methods.

Spatial Distribution of Nitrogen Binding Sites in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Selective Ethane Adsorption and One-Step Ethylene Purification

The one-step purification of ethylene (C2 H4 ) from mixtures containing ethane (C2 H6 ) and acetylene (C2 H2 ) is an industrially important yet challenging process. In this work, we present a site-engineering strategy aimed at manipulating the spatial distribution of binding sites within a confined pore space. We realized successfully by incorporating nitrogen-containing heterocycles, such as indole-5-carboxylic acid (Ind), benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid (Bzz), and indazole-5-carboxylic acid (Izo), into the robust MOF-808 platform via post-synthetic modification. The resulting functionalized materials, namely MOF-808-Ind, MOF-808-Bzz, and MOF-808-Izo, demonstrated significantly improved selectivity for C2 H2 and C2 H6 over C2 H4 . MOF-808-Bzz with two uniformly distributed nitrogen binding sites gave the optimal geometry for selective ethane trapping through multiple strong C-H⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonds, leading to the highest C2 H2 /C2 H4 and C2 H6 /C2 H4 combined selectivities among known MOFs. Column breakthrough experiments validated its ability to purify C2 H4 from ternary C2 H2 /C2 H4 /C2 H6 mixtures in a single step.

A Triphenylphosphine-Based Microporous Polymer for a Wittig Reaction Cycle in the Solid State

The Wittig reaction is a key step in industrial processes to synthesise large quantities of vitamin A and various other important chemicals that are used in daily life. This article presents a pathway to achieve the Wittig reaction in a solid network. A highly porous triphenylphosphine-based polymer was applied as a solid Wittig reagent that undergoes, in a multi-step cycle, in total six post-synthetic modifications. This allowed for regeneration of the solid Wittig reagent and reuse for the same reaction cycle. Of particular industrial relevance is that the newly developed material also enables a simple way of separating the product by filtration. Therefore, additional costly and difficult separation and purification steps are no longer needed.

Tailor-Made Pdn L2n Metal-Organic Cages through Covalent Post-Synthetic Modification

Post-synthetic modification (PSM) is an effective approach for the tailored functionalization of metal-organic architectures, but its generalizability remains challenging. Herein we report a general covalent PSM strategy to functionalize Pd_n L_2n metal-organic cages (MOCs, n=2, 12) through an efficient Diels-Alder cycloaddition between peripheral anthracene substituents and various functional motifs bearing a maleimide group. As expected, the solubility of functionalized Pd₁₂ L₂₄ in common solvents can be greatly improved. Interestingly, concentration-dependent circular dichroism and aggregation-induced emission are achieved with chiral binaphthol (BINOL)- and tetraphenylethylene-modified Pd₁₂ L₂₄ , respectively. Furthermore, Pd₁₂ L₂₄ can be introduced with two different functional groups (e.g., chiral BINOL and achiral pyrene) through a step-by-step PSM route to obtain chirality-induced circularly polarized luminescence. Moreover, similar results are readily observed with a smaller Pd₂ L₄ system.

Post-Nickelation of a Crystalline Trinuclear Copper Organic Framework for Synergistic Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Conversion

Rational regulation of electronic structures and functionalities of framework materials still remains challenging. Herein, reaction of 4,4',4''-nitrilo-tribenzhydrazide with tris(μ₂ -4-carboxaldehyde-pyrazolato-N,N')-tricopper (Cu₃ Py₃ ) generates the crystalline copper organic framework USTB-11(Cu). Post-modification with divalent nickel ions affords the heterometallic framework USTB-11(Cu,Ni). Powder X-ray diffraction and theoretical simulations reveal their two-dimensional hexagonal structure geometry. A series of advanced spectroscopic techniques disclose the mixed Cu^I /Cu^II state nature of Cu₃ Py₃ in USTB-11(Cu,Ni) with a uniform bistable Cu₃ ⁴⁺ (Cu^I ₂ Cu^II ) : Cu₃ ⁵⁺ (Cu^I Cu^II ₂ ) (ca. 1 : 3) oxidation state, resulting in a significantly improved formation efficiency of the charge-separation state. This endows the Ni sites with enhanced activity and USTB-11(Cu,Ni) with outstanding photocatalytic CO₂ to CO performance with a conversion rate of 22 130 μmol g^-1  h^-1 and selectivity of 98 %.

Fully Conjugated Tetraoxa[8]circulene-Based Porous Semiconducting Polymers

Tetraoxa[8]circulenes (TOCs) are a class of hetero[8]circulenes featuring a planar cyclooctatetraene core with a mixed aromatic/antiaromatic motif that governs their electronic properties. Polymeric TOCs (pTOCs) have been the subject of several computational simulations because they are predicted to be low-band-gap semiconductors, but they have not been available synthetically yet. Here, we report the first example of pTOCs, a new family of porous semiconductors, synthesized under ionothermal conditions through the intermolecular cyclization of 1,4,5,8-anthracene tetrone. pTOCs are porous, with surface areas up to 1656 m²  g^-1 , and exhibit light-switchable and tunable semiconducting properties.
