Partial Congener Substitution Induced Centrosymmetric to Noncentrosymmetric Transformation Witnessed by K3Ga3(Ge7–xMx)Se20 (M = Si, Sn) and Their Nonlinear Optical Properties

Pentanary Oxythiogermanates Ba3MGe3O2S8 (M = Ca, Zn) Featuring [Ge3O2S8]8- Trimers and {[MGe3O2S8]6-}∞ Chains: Structural Chemistry and Physical Properties

Oxychalcogenides are increasingly attracting wide attention because they contain multiple anions that may combine the advantages of oxides and chalcogenides. In this work, two new pentanary oxythiogermanates, Ba3MGe3O2S8 [M = Ca (1), Zn (2)], were synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state reaction. They crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pnma, and their structures contain isolated [Ge3O2S8]8- units constructed by one [GeO2S2] and two [GeOS3] tetrahedra that link with M2+ ions to build the {[MGe3O2S8]6-}∞ chain, representing a new type of oxythiogermanate. Notably, a [ZnS5] square pyramid exists in 2. Their structural chemistry and relationship with relevant structures are analyzed. 1 and 2 exhibit wide band gaps of 3.93 and 2.63 eV, birefringences of 0.100 and 0.089 at 2100 nm, respectively, and also obvious photocurrent responses. This work may be extended to a family of AE3MIIMIV3O2Q8 (AE = alkali-earth metal; MII = Ca, Zn, Cd, Hg; MIV = Si, Ge, Sn; Q = S, Se), and further systematic survey on them can be performed to enrich the study of multifunctional oxychalcogenides.

KREP2S6 (RE = Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy): A Series of Polar Rare-Earth Thiophosphates with High Laser-Induced Damage Thresholds and Moderate Nonlinear-Optical Responses Synergistically Contributed by Isolated P2S6 Units and {[RE2S15]24-}∞ Layers

As one of the potential candidates of nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials, rare-earth chalcophosphates have demonstrated promising properties. Here, KREP2S6 (RE = Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy) were synthesized using the facile RE2O3-B-S solid-state method. They crystallize with a monoclinic chiral P21 structure, and their layer structures are built by isolated ethane-like P2S6 dimers and RES8 bicapped trigonal prisms built {[RE2S15]24-}∞ layers. By comparing the structures with related ones, the change of the alkali metal or RE3+ ions can cause structural transformation. Their band gaps are tunable between 2.58 and 3.79 eV, and their powder samples exhibit good NLO properties. Theoretical calculations suggest that the NLO properties are mainly contributed by P2S6 units and {[RE2S15]24-}∞ layers synergistically, in which {[RE2S15]24-}∞ layers and P2S6 units dominate the contribution to the band gap and second-harmonic-generation response, respectively. This work enriches the application of rare-earth chalcophosphates as NLO materials.

Rational Design of Novel Promising Infrared Nonlinear Optical Materials: Structural Chemistry and Balanced Performances

ConspectusSecond-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are currently a hot topic in modern solid-state chemistry and optics because they can produce coherent light by frequency conversion. Noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structure is not only the prerequisite for NLO materials but also a challengeable issue because materials tend to be centrosymmetric (CS) in terms of thermodynamical stability. Among NLO materials, an excellent infrared (IR) candidate should simultaneously meet several strict key conditions including a large NLO coefficient, high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), phase-matchable (PM) behavior, and so on. Achieving a balance between the large NLO effect and high LIDT is difficult, as they have contradictory requirements for chemical bonds. Considering the urgent need of the high-power IR laser market and the drawbacks of the available ones, exploring new high-performance IR NLO crystals is necessary while challenging. In this Account, we first briefly introduce the status and advancement of IR NLO crystals and emphasize the criteria of an excellent candidate. Then, we will introduce five simple methods developed by us to discover practical NLO candidates through understanding of the chemical composition-structure-NLO performance relationship. (1) A rarely investigated system with simple chemical compositions as new-type NLO crystals, namely, adducts containing S8 molecules, are developed. Combining a chairlike S8 unit with other units through van der Waals forces has successfully obtained several high-performance NLO adducts. (2) The main trend in exploring new NLO crystals is that the chemical composition is more and more diversified and the structure is more and more complex, and expensive and chemically active alkaline and alkaline earth metals are usually introduced as counter cations. In contrast, the research on systems with simple chemical compositions, simple structures, and low costs has been continuously ignored. The binary M2Q3 (M = Ga, In; Q = S, Se) family with rich acentric modifications has been systematically investigated, and they all exhibit strong SHG effects and high LIDTs. (3) We first proposed the concept of inducing CS structures transformed to NCS ones by partial cation substitution to design novel NLO crystals. Considering the huge number of CS structures in the database compared to the number of NCS structures, it is an attractive method to apply CS structures as the parents to obtain potential NLO materials via partial-substitution-induced symmetry breaking. A series of chalcogenides with high NLO performances have been successfully obtained by us in this way. (4) We investigated the first NLO-active rare earth (RE) chalcophosphates and developed this family systematically, and they demonstrate wonderful comprehensive NLO properties. (5) We created a novel mixed-anion system for NLO applications, namely, chalcogenide borates. Usually, mixed-anion compounds can engender a synergistic effect to obtain desired IR NLO properties. Our recent progress on this system suggests that chalcogenide borates are potential candidates for IR NLO applications, although the study is still in its infancy. Finally, we state the current problems of IR NLO materials and give some perspectives for their future development.

From ZnF2 to ZnF2(H2O)4: Partial Substitution Achieves Structural Transformation and Nonlinear Optical Activity while Keeping Short Ultraviolet Cutoff Edge

Exploring nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with short ultraviolet cutoff edges are significant for developing an all-solid-state laser. Here, a noncentrosymmetric zinc fluoride hydrate, ZnF2(H2O)4, was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in the polar space group of Pca21. The compound consists of the central Zn2+ combined with F- and coordination water to form the [ZnF2(H2O)4] octahedra, and each octahedron is isolated from each other to form a 0-dimensional structure. As an acentric compound, ZnF2(H2O)4 shows a phase-matchable second-harmonic-generation (SHG) activity with an intensity about 0.5 times that of KH2PO4. More attractively, it also shows a short ultraviolet cutoff edge below 200 nm, which is rare in reported halide hydrate systems. Interestingly, from ZnF2 to ZnF2(H2O)4, the partial substitution of the coordinated F atoms by H2O molecules leads to the structural transformation from centric to acentric with SHG activity off to on. Structural analyses, NLO activity, and theoretical calculations are presented in this work.

KHg4Ga3S9: A Hg-Based Sulfide with Nonlinear-Optical Activity in the A-MII-MIII-Q (A = Alkali Metal; MII = d10 Metal; MIII = Ga, In; Q = S, Se) System

The search for new high-performance infrared (IR) nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials is a hot topic in the fields of laser chemistry and inorganic solid-state chemistry. Here, a new Hg-based sulfide KHg4Ga3S9 in the family of A-MII-MIII-Q (A = alkali metal; MII = d10 metal; MIII = Ga, In; Q = S, Se) was synthesized. It crystallizes in the orthogonal system of the C2221 structure, which is rare for IR NLO chalcogenides. Its anionic framework {[Hg4Ga3S9]-}∞ is constructed by two types of interconnected helical chains, viz., the inner layer ({[Hg6Ga2S29/3]4/3-}∞) and the outer layer ({[Hg2Ga4S25/3]2/3-}∞). It exhibits a moderate NLO response and a high laser-induced damage threshold. Theoretical calculations indicate that the HgS4 unit accounts for its much larger NLO response compared to RbCd4Ga3S9. The influence of alkali metals and d10 metals on the initial phase-matching wavelength is also discussed. This work provides inspiration for improving the properties of NLO materials' properties.

The first quaternary rare-earth oxythiogermanate with second-harmonic generation and ferromagnetic behavior

The discovery of new functional materials is attractive since they have the opportunity to change some important fields. Of these materials, oxychalcogenides constitute an increasing type of nonlinear optical (NLO) material. Herein, a new rare-earth oxythiogermanate Eu₃GeOS₄ crystallizing with a polar orthorhombic Pca2₁ structure is studied. Its three-dimensional structure is constructed from unique [EuOS₆] monocapped trigonal prisms and isolated [GeOS₃] tetrahedra, featuring a new type of oxysulfides. Its band gap is 2.05 eV, and it exhibits obvious second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and high laser-induced damage threshold. In addition, Eu₃GeOS₄ exhibits Curie-Weiss ferromagnetic behavior in the high-temperature region. The SHG effect is ascribed to the synergistic effect of [EuOS₆] and [GeOS₃] units based on theoretical calculation results. This work is the first investigation of quaternary rare-earth oxythiogermanates as NLO materials.

Sb5O7I: Exploration of Ternary Antimony-Based Oxyhalide as a Nonlinear-Optical Material

Metal oxyhalides are attracting extensive interest for their enchanting structures and diverse properties. Herein, a ternary antimony oxyiodide, Sb₅O₇I with the new hexagonal noncentrosymmetric P6₃ structure is systematically surveyed by focusing on its nonlinear-optical (NLO) behavior. Its two-dimensional structure is constructed by {Sb₂[Sb₃O₇]}_∞⁺ layers separated by charge-balanced I^- anions. The second-harmonic-generation measurement result suggests that Sb₅O₇I is NLO-active, and the effect is assigned to the [SbO₃]^3- triangular pyramids' contribution. Sb₅O₇I shows a direct optical energy gap of 3.22 eV, which is the largest among all reported ternary oxyiodides. This work is the first investigation of ternary NLO Sb-based oxyhalides and enriches the study of metal oxyhalides as promising NLO materials.

Pb5(GeO4)(Ge2O7) and Pb3.32Ca1.68(GeO4)(Ge2O7): Two Nonlinear Optical Germanates Induced by Diverse PbOx Polyhedra

Oxide nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals have drawn wide interest for their comprehensive physical performances including wide infrared (IR) transparency ranges, large band gaps, and good stability in open air. Here, two isostructural germanate oxides, Pb₅(GeO₄)(Ge₂O₇) (1) and Pb_3.32Ca_1.68(GeO₄)(Ge₂O₇) (2), adopting the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space group P6̅, were composed via a conventional solid-state reaction. The latter was designed by the partial cation substitution strategy based on parent 1. The whole structures of 1 and 2 are composed of isolated distorted GeO₄ tetrahedra, Ge₂O₇ dimers, and diverse M (M = Pb, Ca, or Pb/Ca)-centered polyhedra. They exhibit second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses around 3.3 and 1.4 times that of KH₂PO₄ (KDP) under 1.064 μm laser radiation, respectively. Theoretical calculation results reveal that the Pb²⁺ cations with stereo-active long pair (SCALP) electrons of 1 favor the large SHG response, while Pb-based polyhedra showing inert SCALP electrons make predominant contributions to the moderate SHG effect of 2.

From CsKTaF7 to CsNaTaF7 : Alkali Metal Cations Regulation to Generate SHG Activity

Inorganic metal halides play important roles in wide range of areas including fluorescence, X-ray detection, and nonlinear-optics. Herein, two new mixed alkali metal tantalum fluorides, CsKTaF₇ and CsNaTaF₇ , have been obtained based on the strategy of cations regulation in A₂ MF₇ (A represents monovalent cations and M is d⁰ transition-metal cation) system by a conventional hydrothermal route. CsKTaF₇ crystallizes in the centric Pnma space group, while CsNaTaF₇ crystallizes in the polar Cmc2₁ space group and exhibits moderate and phase-matchable NLO activity. Both halides possess large optical band gaps above 5.0 eV. The crystal structure evolution, optical properties, and detailed theory calculations of these two halides were elucidated in this work.

Alkali metal partial substitution-induced improved second-harmonic generation and enhanced laser-induced damage threshold for Ag-based sulfides

Two new pentanary sulfides LiAgIn2GeS6 and NaAgIn2GeS6 were derived from parent Ag2In2GeS6via Li and Na partial substitution of Ag element, and their SHG efficiencies and LIDT intensities enhanced concurrently.

Sn7Br10S2: The First Ternary Halogen-Rich Chalcohalide Exhibiting A Chiral Structure and Pronounced Nonlinear Optical Properties

Infrared nonliear optical (IR NLO) materials are significant in laser technology for civil and military uses. Here, we report the synthesis, structural chemistry and NLO properties of a halogen-rich chalcohalide Sn7Br10S2. Its noncentrosymmetric (NCS, P63) structure can be considered as partially aliovalent anion substitution of SnBr2 (P63/m) induced centrosymmetric (CS) to NCS structural transformation. The 3D ∞[Sn(1)6Sn(2)6Br6X6]6- (X = Br/S) channel framework is consisting of Sn(1)BrX2 and Sn(2)X3 trigonal pyramids. It exhibits excellent NLO performances, including strong phase-matchable NLO response 1.5 × AgGaS2 and high laser-induced damage threshold 6.3 × AgGaS2. Structure-NLO performance relationship investigation confirm that the effective arrangement of Sn(1)BrX2 and Sn(2)X3 units predominantly contribute to the large SHG response. These results indicate Sn7Br10S2 is a potential IR NLO candidate, and provide a new feasible system as promising NLO materials.

Noncentrosymmetric Ba6In2Q10 (Q = S, Se): Structural Chemistry and Nonlinear-Optical Activity

The indispensable condition for laser frequency-doubling crystal materials is that they crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structures. Here, ternary NCS Ba₆In₂S₁₀ (1) and Ba₆In₂Se₁₀ (2) (P6₃) were synthesized via conventional solid-state reactions. Their zero-dimensional structures feature isolated InQ₄ tetrahedra and Q₂^2- (Q = S, Se) dimers that are separated by Ba²⁺ counter cations. The structural relevance and differences with the centrosymmetric Ba₁₂In₄S₁₉ and Ba₁₂In₄Se₂₀ are analyzed in detail. Both 1 and 2 show obvious laser frequency-doubling activity, and their optical band gaps are 3.72 and 1.78 eV, respectively. This work provides a new type of IR nonlinear-optical materials.

Stepwise Li Substitution Induced Structure Evolution and Improved Nonlinear Optical Performance for Diamond-like Sulfides

One of the key scientific issues for exploration of novel infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals is to obtain ones with good hybrid NLO behaviors. Herein, we report four diamond-like Ag-based sulfides via stepwise Li substitution of Ag in Ag₂ZnSnS₄, including Ag₂ZnSnS₄ (1), (Li_1.22Ag_0.78)ZnSnS₄ (2), (Li_1.58Ag_0.42)ZnSnS₄ (3), and Li₂ZnSnS₄ (4). With the increase of Li content, the sulfide's noncentrosymmetric crystal structure changes from tetragonal I42m for 1, to orthorhombic Pmn2₁ for 2 and 3, and to monoclinic Pn for 4. Accordingly, their NLO responses are improved along with the increase of Li content, viz. from non-NLO-active for 1, to non-phase-matchable for 2 and 3, and to phase-matchable for 4. Their optical band gaps also increase regularly. The relationship between their chemical compositions, crystal structures, and NLO activities is investigated by means of chemical structural analysis and theoretical calculation. This work offers a new systematic case for designing promising NLO-active compounds via rarely adopted cation's stepwise partial substitution and understanding the chemical composition-structure-NLO property relationship.

Three-in-One Strategy Constructing a Series of Hybrid Tetrahedral Motif-Based Selenides with Balanced Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Performance

Concurrently achieving suitable second harmonic generation (SHG) effect and high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) is challenging for infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Here, a series of pentanary infrared NLO materials CsM^IIIM^IVSnSe₆ (M^III = Ga, In; M^IV = Si, Ge) have been obtained by a three-in-one strategy, viz. three kinds of elements (M^III, M^IV, and Sn) in one position, which is first adopted to design NLO materials. Their three-dimensional structures are constructed by the MQ₄ (M denotes M^III, M^IV, and Sn) tetrahedral units. They exhibit promising hybrid NLO properties, witnessed by their moderate/large SHG effects of 0.52, 0.98, 1.05, and 1.12 × AgGaS₂, and high powder LIDT values of 6.9, 4.1, 8.1, and 5.4 × AgGaS₂, respectively. These NLO properties are well verified by the DFT calculation results. The three-in-one strategy of designing high-performance infrared NLO materials will stimulate more investigations in this field.

Hexagonal In2Se3: A Defect Wurtzite-Type Infrared Nonlinear Optical Material with Moderate Birefringence Contributed by Unique InSe5 Unit

The balance between second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity and laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), together with phase-matchable behavior, is the key point for exploration of novel nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. In this work, the NLO property of defect wurtzite-type hexagonal-In₂Se₃ (γ) is extensively explored first. It exhibits a strong SHG intensity of 2.6 × AgGaS₂ (AGS) at 2.1 μm, and a high powder LIDT of 7.3 × AGS. From wurtzite to γ-In₂Se₃, the birefringence changes from 0.003 to 0.075, resulting in the phase-matchable phenomenon of γ-In₂Se₃. This is well ascribed to the contribution of the unique InSe₅ unit in γ-In₂Se₃ from the result of birefringence calculation and analysis.
