Imidazolylidene Cu(II) Complexes: Synthesis Using Imidazolium Carboxylate Precursors and Structure Rearrangement Pathways

Three water-soluble copper(II) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes: toward copper-catalyzed ketone reduction under sustainable conditions

A series of tridentate copper(II) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes with imidazole, benzimidazole, and 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole azole rings were synthesized and comprehensively characterized via X-ray crystallography, ESI-MS, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-Vis and EPR spectroscopic studies. These complexes were then utilized for the optimization of ketone reduction under sustainable conditions using 2-acetylpyridine and phenylsilane. The relationships between product formation, temperature, reaction time, and catalyst loading for the hydrogenation reactions are covered in detail. Reduction of eighteen different aliphatic, cyclic, and aromatic ketones were demonstrated, which were compatible to produce the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. These systems were used to develop related DNA-hybrid catalytic systems, but only supported weak enantioselectivity. Further thermodynamic experiments showed Cu-NHC complexes did not demonstrate specific binding to DNA, which is consistent with their limited selectivity.

Ultra-Long Lived Luminescent Triplet Excited States in Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene Complexes of Zn(II) Halides

The high element abundance and d10 electron configuration make ZnII -based compounds attractive candidates for the development of novel photoactive molecules. Although a large library of purely fluorescent compounds exists, emission involving triplet excited states is a rare phenomenon for zinc complexes. We have investigated the photophysical and -chemical properties of a series of dimeric and monomeric ZnII halide complexes bearing a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (cAAC) as chromophore unit. Specifically, [(cAAC)XZn(μ-X)2 ZnX(cAAC)] (X=Cl (1), Br (2), I (3)) and [ZnX2 (cAAC)(NCMe)] (X=Br (4), I (5)) were isolated and fully characterized, showing intense visible light photoluminescence under UV irradiation at 297 K and fast photo-induced transformation. At 77 K, the compounds exhibit improved stability allowing to record ultra-long lifetimes in the millisecond regime. DFT/MRCI calculations confirm that the emission stems from 3 XCT/LEcAAC states and indicate the phototransformation to be related to asymmetric distortion of the complexes by cAAC ligand rotation. This study enhances our understanding of the excited state properties for future development and application of new classes of ZnII phosphorescent complexes.

SET processes in Lewis acid-base reactions: the tritylation of N-heterocyclic carbenes

Reactions between N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the trityl cation, [Ph₃C]⁺, give covalent adducts of type [NHC-CPh₃]⁺ and/or [NHC-C₆H₅-CPh₂]⁺. EPR spectroscopy, UV-Vis analyses, and trapping experiments imply that adduct formation involves carbene radical cations and the trityl radical. The results demonstrate that single electron transfer (SET) processes should be considered for reaction of NHCs with oxidizing Lewis acids.
