Unraveling the Effects of Cobalt on Crystal Growth and Solution Behavior of Nb6P2W12-based Dimeric Clusters

Insights into the self-assembly of giant polyoxomolybdates from building blocks to supramolecular structures

Giant polyoxomolybdates are a special class of polyoxometalate clusters which can bridge the gap between small molecule clusters and large polymeric entities. Besides, giant polyoxomolybdates also show interesting applications in catalysis, biochemistry, photovoltaic and electronic devices, and other fields. Revealing the evolution route of the reducing species into the final cluster structure and also their further hierarchical self-assembly behaviour is undoubtedly fascinating, aiming to guide the design and synthesis. Herein, we reviewed the self-assembly mechanism study of giant polyoxomolybdate clusters, and the exploration of a new structure and new synthesis methodology is also summarized. Finally, we emphasize the importance of in-operando characterization in revealing the self-assembly mechanism of giant polyoxomolybdates, and especially for the further reconstruction of intermediates into the designable synthesis of new structures.

Not So Similar: Different Ways of Nb(V) and Ta(V) Catecholate Complexation

The reactions between catechol (H₂cat) and niobium(V) or tantalum(V) precursors in basic aqueous solutions lead to the formation of catecholate complexes of different natures. The following complexes were isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD): (1) (NH₄)₃[NbO(cat)₃]∙4H₂O; (2) K₂[Nb(cat)₃(Hcat)]·2H₂cat·2H₂O; (3) Cs₃[NbO(cat)₃]·H₂O; (4) (NH₄)₄[Ta₂O(cat)₆]·3H₂O; (5) Cs₂[Ta(cat)₃(Hcat)]·H₂cat; (6) Cs₄[Ta₂O(cat)₆]·7H₂O. The isolated crystalline products were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), FTIR, and TGA. The structural features of these complexes, such as {Ta₂O} unit geometry, Cs-π interactions, and crystal packing effects, are discussed.

Two novel telluroniobates with efficient catalytic activity for the imidation/amidation reaction

We present the synthesis and catalytic properties of two novel telluroniobates {Te₁₅Nb₂₁} and {Te₁₀Nb₁₄}. {Te₁₅Nb₂₁} is the first trimeric telluroniobate with the largest number of tellurium atoms in the Te-Nb system. Besides, both clusters exhibit excellent catalytic activity in the amidation reactions of anhydrides and amines, and cyclic imides and bi-amides can be controllably synthesized, which represents a breakthrough in the catalysis of polyoxoniobates.

Cation-Controlled Assembly of Polyoxotungstate-Based Coordination Networks

The Preyssler polyoxoanion, [NaP₅ W₃₀ O₁₁₀ ]^14- ({P₅ W₃₀ }), is used as a platform for evaluating the role of nonbridging cations in the formation of transition-metal-bridged polyoxometalate (POM) coordination frameworks. Specifically, the assembly architecture of Co²⁺ -bridged frameworks is shown to be dependent on the identity and amount of alkali or alkaline-earth cations present during crystallization. The inclusion of Li⁺ , Na⁺ , K⁺ , Mg²⁺ , or Ca²⁺ in the framework synthesis is used to selectively synthesize five different Co²⁺ -bridged {P₅ W₃₀ } structures. The influence of the competition between K⁺ and Co²⁺ for binding to {P₅ W₃₀ } in dictating framework assembly is evaluated. The role of ion pairing on framework assembly structure and available void volume is discussed. Overall, these results provide insight into factors governing the ability to achieve controlled assembly of POM-based coordination networks.
