Fabricating Network-Link Acetamiprid-Loading Micelles Based on Dopamine-Functionalized Alginate and Alkyl Polyglucoside To Enhance Folia Deposition and Retention

Constructing network structures to enhance stability and target deposition of selenium nanoparticles via amphiphilic sodium alginate and alkyl glycosides

Dietary selenium (Se) supplementation has recently received increasing attention; however, Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) exhibit poor stability and tend to aggregate in aqueous solution. Therefore, enhancing the stability of SeNPs and their effective delivery to plants remain challenging. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) and lysozyme (LZ) were reacted via the wet-heat Maillard reaction (MR) to obtain amphiphilic alginate-based polymers (SA-LZ). Alkyl glycosides (APG) were introduced into SA-LZ to enhance the deposition of SeNPs in leaves. Thus, a renewable and degradable polysaccharide-based material (SA-LZ/APG) loaded with Se formed an amphiphilic alginate-based-based shell with a Se core. Notably, the encapsulation of SeNPs into a polysaccharide base (SA-LZ/APG) increased the stabilization of SeNPs and resulted in orange-red, zero-valent, monoclinic and spherical SeNPs with a mean diameter of approximately 43.0 nm. In addition, SA-LZ/APG-SeNPs reduced the interfacial tension of plant leaves and increased the Se content of plants compared to the blank group. In vitro studies have reported that SA-LZ/APG-SeNPs and SA-LZ-SeNPs have significantly better clearance of DDPH and ABTS than that of APG-SeNPs. Thus, we believe that SA-LZ/APG is a promising smart delivery system that can synergistically enhance the stability of SeNPs in aqueous solutions and improve the bioavailability of Se nutrient solutions.

Effect of Brucea javanica Oil on the Toxicity of β-Cypermethrin Emulsifiable Concentrate Formulation

Enhancing the performance of traditional pesticide formulations by improving their leaf surface wetting capabilities is a crucial approach for maximizing the pesticide efficiency. This study develops an emulsifiable concentrate (EC) of 4.5% β-cypermethrin containing Brucea javanica oil (BJO). The incorporation of BJO aims to improve the leaf-wetting properties of the EC formulation and enhance its insecticidal effectiveness. The droplet size and emulsion characteristics of β-CYP EC emulsion with varying concentrations of the emulsifier were evaluated, and changes after incorporating BJO were assessed to develop the optimal formulation. A comprehensive comparison was conducted among commercial 4.5% β-cypermethrin EC (β-CYP EC-1), 4.5% β-cypermethrin EC with BJO (β-CYP EC-2), and 4.5% β-cypermethrin EC without BJO (β-CYP EC-3). This comparison encompassed various factors including storage stability, insecticidal activity, cytotoxicity, and wetting performance on cabbage leaves. The results indicated that the ideal emulsifier concentration was 15% emulsifier 0201B. β-CYP EC-2 demonstrated superior wetting properties on cabbage leaves (the wetting performance of β-CYP EC-2 emulsion on cabbage leaves is 2.60 times that of the β-CYP EC-1 emulsion), heightened insecticidal activity against the third larvae of Plutella xylostella [diamondback moth (DBM)] [the insecticidal activity of the β-CYP EC-2 emulsion against the third larvae of DBM is 1.93 times that of the β-CYP EC-1 emulsion (12 h)], and more obvious inhibitory effects on the proliferation of DBM embryo cells than the other tested formulations. These findings have significant implications for advancing pest control strategies and promoting sustainable and effective agricultural practices.

NIR- and pH-responsive injectable nanocomposite alginate-graft-dopamine hydrogel for melanoma suppression and wound repair

Surgical excision, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are the main approaches used for treating melanoma. Unfortunately, surgical excision usually inevitably causes large area skin defects. In addition, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are often accompanied by adverse reactions and multi-drug resistance. To overcome these limitations, a near-infrared (NIR)- and pH-responsive injectable nanocomposite hydrogel was developed using sodium alginate-graft-dopamine (SD) and biomimetic polydopamine-Fe(III)-doxorubicin nanoparticles (PFD NPs) for treating melanoma and promoting skin regeneration. Firstly, the SD/PFD hydrogel can precisely deliver anti-cancer agents to the tumor site to reduce its loss and off-target toxicity. Then, PFD can convert light into heat energy under NIR irradiation to kill cancer cells. Meanwhile, doxorubicin can be administered continuously and controllably by NIR- and pH-responsive. Additionally, the SD/PFD hydrogel can also relieve tumor hypoxia by decomposing endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) into oxygen (O₂). Therefore, photothermal, chemotherapy, and nanozyme synergetic therapy resulted in the tumor suppression. Specifically, the SA-based hydrogel can kill bacteria, scavenge reactive oxygen species, promote the proliferation and migration of cells, and significantly accelerate skin regeneration. Therefore, this study provides a safe and effective strategy for melanoma treatment and wound repair.

Recent Development of Versatile Polyphenol Platforms in Fertilizers and Pesticides

The utilization of agrochemicals has been of significant importance in both the cultivation and disease control of crops. The development of advanced agrochemicals that are both effective and eco-friendly has been made possible through the use of slow delivery platforms and surface modification technology. Inspired by the nature of mussel adhesion, polyphenolic platforms with versatile properties have been extensively employed in various applications, including agro-food, owing to their ability to flexibly modulate chemical and surface characteristics. This mini-review highlights the development of polyphenols, such as polydopamine and tannic acid, in the field of agrochemicals, particularly in the design and production of novel fertilizers and pesticides. The synthetic approach, active ingredient release performance, foliar adhesion, and design of polyphenolic-based agrochemicals in recent years have been discussed to explore their potential applications and limitations. We believe that utilizing versatile polyphenolic materials and their characteristics for agro-food applications can provide innovative ideas and suggestions for developing novel agrochemicals suitable for modern and sustainable horticulture and agriculture.

Nano-based smart formulations: A potential solution to the hazardous effects of pesticide on the environment

Inefficient usage, overdose, and post-application losses of conventional pesticides have resulted in severe ecological and environmental issues, such as pesticide resistance, environmental contamination, and soil degradation. Advances in nano-based smart formulations are promising novel methods to decrease the hazardous impacts of pesticide on the environment. In light of the lack of a systematic and critical summary of these aspects, this work has been structured to critically assess the roles and specific mechanisms of smart nanoformulations (NFs) in mitigating the adverse impacts of pesticide on the environment, along with an evaluation of their final environmental fate, safety, and application prospects. Our study provides a novel perspective for a better understanding of the potential functions of smart NFs in reducing environmental pollution. Additionally, this study offers meaningful information for the safe and effective use of these nanoproducts in field applications in the near future.

Organosilica-based deformable nanopesticides with enhanced insecticidal activity prepared by flash nanoprecipitation
