Data Driven Discovery of MOFs for Hydrogen Gas Adsorption

Chromium(II)-isophthalate 2D MOF with Redox-Tailorable Gas Adsorption Selectivity

Redox-active metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are very promising materials due to their potential capabilities for postsynthetic modification aimed at tailoring their application properties. However, the research field related to redox-active MOFs is still relatively underdeveloped, which limits their practical application. We investigated the self-assembly process of Cr(II) ions and isophthalate (m-bdc) linkers, which have been previously demonstrated to yield 0D metal-organic polyhedra. However, using the diffusion-controlled synthetic approach, we demonstrate the selective preparation of a 2D-layered Cr(II)-based MOF material [Cr(m-bdc)]·H2O (1·H2O). Remarkably, the controlled oxidation of the developed 2D MOF using nitric oxide or dry oxygen resulted in modified porous materials with excellent H2/N2 adsorption selectivities.

Construction of metal-organic framework/cellulose nanofibers-based hybrid membranes and their ion transport property for efficient osmotic energy conversion

The development of advanced nanofluidic membranes with better ion selectivity, efficient energy conversion and high output power density remains challenging. Herein, we prepared nanofluidic hybrid membranes based on TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers (T-CNF) and manganese-based metal organic framework (MOF) using a simple in situ synthesis method. Incorporated T-CNF endows the MOF/T-CNF hybrid membrane with a high cation selectivity up to 0.93. Nanoporous MOF in three-dimensional interconnected nanochannels provides massive ion transport pathways. High transmembrane ion flux and low ion permeation energy barrier are correlated with a superior energy conversion efficiency (36 %) in MOF/T-CNF hybrid membrane. When operating under 50-fold salinity gradient by mixing simulated seawater and river water, the MOF/T-CNF hybrid membrane achieves a maximum power density value of 1.87 W m-2. About 5-fold increase in output power density was achieved compared to pure T-CNF membrane. The integration of natural nanofibers with high charge density and nanoporous MOF materials is demonstrated an effective and novel strategy for the enhancement of output power density of nanofluidic membranes, showing the great potential of MOF/T-CNF hybrid membranes as efficient nanofluidic osmotic energy generators.

Data Driven Computational Design and Experimental Validation of Drugs for Accelerated Mitigation of Pandemic-like Scenarios

Emerging pathogens are a historic threat to public health and economic stability. Current trial-and-error approaches to identify new therapeutics are often ineffective due to their inefficient exploration of the enormous small molecule design space. Here, we present a data-driven computational framework composed of hybrid evolutionary algorithms for evolving functional groups on existing drugs to improve their binding affinity toward the main protease (Mpro) of SARS-CoV-2. We show that combinations of functional groups and sites are critical to design drugs with improved binding affinity, which can be easily achieved using our framework by exploring a fraction of the available search space. Atomistic simulations and experimental validation elucidate that enhanced and prolonged interactions between functionalized drugs and Mpro residues result in their improved therapeutic value over that of the parental compound. Overall, this novel framework is extremely flexible and has the potential to rapidly design inhibitors for any protein with available crystal structures.
