Abstract
Understanding the origin and effect of the confinement of molecules and transition states within the micropores of a zeolite can enable targeted design of such materials for catalysis, gas storage, and membrane-based separations. Linear correlations of the thermodynamic parameters of molecular adsorption in zeolites have been proposed; however, their generalizability across diverse molecular classes and zeolite structures has not been established. Here, using molecular simulations of >3500 combinations of adsorbates and zeolites, we show that linear trends hold in many cases; however, they collapse for highly confined systems. Further, there are no simple predictors of the slope of the linear correlations, thereby indicating that there are no universal linear models relating molecule and zeolite pore structures with adsorption properties. We show that nonlinear models, in particular bootstrapped neural networks, that only use geometric and physical descriptors of the adsorbate and zeolite as features can predict the entropy of adsorption, isosteric heat, and Henry's constant (log(K H)) to within 4.71 [J/mol/K], 3.14 [kJ/mol], 1.15 [mg/(g-cat·atm)], respectively. A SHAP analysis that deconvolutes the effect of correlated features to compute their independent additive contributions showed that framework, rather than adsorbate features, was significantly more important for predicting the entropy of adsorption but equivalently important for predicting the Henry's constant. The largest pore diameter along a free sphere path was identified as the most critical framework feature, while the van der Waals volume (which captures the trend in electronegativity) was the most important adsorbate feature toward predicting the entropy of adsorption.

Abstract
Enhancement of the ionic conductivity and reduction of diffusion barriers of lithium-ion batteries are crucial for improving the performance of the fast-growing energy storage devices. Recently, the fast-charging capability of commercial-like lithium-ion anodes with the smallest modification of the current manufacturing technology has been of great interest. We used first principles methods computations with density functional theory and the climbing image-nudged elastic band method to evaluate the impact of an external electric field on the stability, electronic band gap, ionic conductivity, and lithium-ion diffusion coefficient of penta-graphene nanoribbons upon lithium adsorption. By adsorbing a lithium atom, these semiconductor nanoribbons become metal with a formation energy of -0.22 eV, and an applied electric field perpendicular to the surface of these nanoribbons further stabilizes the structure of these lithium-ion systems. Using the Nernst-Einstein relation, in the absence of an electric field, the ionic conductivity of these penta-graphene nanoribbons amounts to 1.24 × 10-4 S cm-1. In the presence of an electric field, this conductivity can reach a maximum value of 8.89 × 10-2 S cm-1, emphasizing the promising role of an electric field for supporting fast-charging capability. Our results highlight the role of an external electric field as a novel switch to improve the efficiency of lithium-ion batteries with penta-graphene nanoribbon electrodes and open a new horizon for the use of pentagonal materials as anode materials in the lithium-ion battery industry.

Abstract
Herein, the application of granular activated carbon, jujube, and barberry tree stem powder for the removal of gasoline and kerosene from water was investigated. Kerosene removal rates upwards of 68.48, 83.87, and 99.02% were achieved using jujube tree stem powder, barberry tree stem powder, and granular activated carbon, respectively. Besides, gasoline removal rates upwards of 69.35, 55.02, and 95.59% were attained using jujube tree stem powder, barberry tree stem powder, and granular activated carbon, respectively. Isotherm data were further investigated and fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Elovich models. The results indicated that the adsorption onto jujube adsorbent is a multilayer adsorption process over a heterogeneous surface, which is best illustrated by the Temkin (Ave. R2= 0.95) model. It was found that the Temkin isotherm (Ave. R2= 0.81) best describes the properties of barberry stem powder in the adsorption of gasoline and kerosene from water. Moreover, the best models to describe the characteristics of granular activated carbon in the adsorption of gasoline and kerosene from water were Freundlich (Ave. R2= 0.74) and Langmuir (Ave. R2= 0.73) isotherms, respectively. The adsorption kinetics showed that the pseudo-second-order was appropriate in modeling the adsorption kinetics of gasoline and kerosene to the studied adsorbents (R2>0.74).

Abstract
The adsorption mechanism of individual volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the surface of graphene is investigated using nonempirical van der Waals (vdW) density functional theory. The VOCs chosen as adsorbates are ethanol, benzene, and toluene, which are found in the exhaled breath of lung cancer patients. The most energetically favorable configurations of the adsorbed systems, adsorption energy profiles, charge transfer, and work function are calculated. The fundamental insight into the interactions between the considered VOC molecules and graphene through molecular doping, i.e., charge transfer, is estimated. It is found that the adsorption energy is highly sensitive to the vdW functionals. Adsorption energies calculated by revPBE-vdW are in good agreement with the available experimental data, and the revPBE-vdW functional can cover well the physical phenomena behind the adsorption of these VOCs on graphene. Bader charge analysis shows that 0.064, 0.042, and 0.061e of charge were transferred from the graphene surface to ethanol, benzene, and toluene, respectively. All of the considered VOCs act as electron acceptors from graphene. By analyzing the electronic structure of the adsorption systems, we found that the energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbitals of these considered VOCs is shifted backward toward the Fermi level. The interaction of the VOCs with the π and π* states of the C atoms in graphene breaks the symmetry of graphene, leading to the opening of a band gap at the Fermi level. The adsorption of these considered VOCs onto the pristine graphene produces a band gap of 5-12 meV.

Abstract
Materials that exhibit both strong covalent and weak van der Waals interactions pose a considerable challenge to many computational methods, such as DFT. This makes assessing the accuracy of calculated properties, such as exfoliation energies in layered materials like hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) problematic, when experimental data are not available. In this paper, we investigate the accuracy of equilibrium lattice constants and exfoliation energy calculation for various DFT-based computational approaches in bulk h-BN. We contrast these results with available experiments and reference fixed-node diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results. From our reference QMC calculation, we obtained an exfoliation energy of - 33 ± 2 meV/atom (-0.38 ± 0.02 J/m2 ).

Abstract
Environmental-friendly biochar (BC) with low cost was obtained by simple pyrolysis of corn stalk core, which was employed as an adsorbent for efficiently removing organic pollutants in water. The physicochemical properties of BCs were characterized by various techniques, including X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), Raman, Thermogravimetric (TGA), N2 adsorption-desorption and zeta potential tests. The influence of pyrolysis temperature on the structure and adsorption efficiency of the adsorbent was emphasized. The graphitization degree and sp2 carbon content of BCs were enhanced by increasing the pyrolysis temperature, which was favorable for the enhancement of the adsorption efficiency. The adsorption results showed that corn stalk core calcined at 900 °C (BC-900) displayed exceptional adsorption efficiency toward bisphenol A (BPA) in wide pH (1-13) and temperature (0-90 °C) ranges. Moreover, adsorbent BC-900 could adsorb various pollutants from water, including antibiotics, organic dyes, and phenol (50 mg·L-1). The adsorption process of BPA over BC-900 matched well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Mechanism investigation suggested that large specific surface area and pore filling acted the foremost role in the adsorption process. Adsorbent BC-900 has the potential application in wastewater treatment due to its simple preparation, low cost, and excellent adsorption efficiency.

Abstract
Fluorinated graphene (FG), as an emerging member of the graphene derivatives family, has attracted wide attention on account of its excellent performances and underlying applications. The introduction of a fluorine atom, with the strongest electronegativity (3.98), greatly changes the electron distribution of graphene, resulting in a series of unique variations in optical, electronic, magnetic, interfacial properties and so on. Herein, recent advances in the study of FG from synthesis to applications are introduced, and the relationship between its structure and properties is summarized in detail. Especially, the functional chemistry of FG has been thoroughly analyzed in recent years, which has opened a universal route for the functionalization and even multifunctionalization of FG toward various graphene derivatives, which further broadens its applications. Moreover, from a particular angle, the structure engineering of FG such as the distribution pattern of fluorine atoms and the regulation of interlayer structure when advanced nanotechnology gets involved is summarized. Notably, the elaborated structure engineering of FG is the key factor to optimize the corresponding properties for potential applications, and is also an up-to-date research hotspot and future development direction. Finally, perspectives and prospects for the problems and challenges in the study of FG are put forward.

Abstract
It is essential to understand the adsorption of guest molecules on carbon-based materials for both theoretical and practical reasons. It is crucial to analyze the surface properties of carbon-based materials with a wide range of applications (e.g., catalyst supports, hydrogen storage, sensors, adsorbents, separation media, etc.). Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) as a powerful and sensitive technique can be used to characterize the surface physicochemical properties (i.e., Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, surface energy heterogeneity, heat of adsorption, specific interaction of adsorption, work of cohesion, glass transition temperatures, solubility, and so forth) of various types of materials such as powders, films, and fibers. In this review, the principles, common methods, and application of IGC are discussed. In addition, the examples of various experiments developed for the IGC to characterize the carbonaceous materials (such as carbon nanotubes, graphite, and activated carbon) are discussed.

Abstract
Vast numbers of unstudied hypothetical porous frameworks continue to spark interest in optimizing adsorption and catalytic processes. Evaluating the use of such materials depends on the accessibility of thermodynamic metrics such as the free energy, which, in turn, depend on the satisfactory estimation or calculation of the adsorption entropy, which often remains elusive. Previous works using simulations and experimental data have demonstrated relationships between the entropy and system descriptors, allowing for sensible predictions based on more-easily obtained physical parameters. However, the resultant conclusions were either based on experimental data for industrially relevant alkanes or lacked a significant sample size. In this paper, we evaluate correlations between gas-phase and adsorbed-phase entropies for a larger and more chemically diverse set of adsorbate molecules by using force fields and statistical mechanical expressions to calculate those entropies. In total, we perform calculations for 37 molecules across 10 chemical categories available in the TraPPE force field set, as adsorbed in five siliceous zeolites. Our results show that linear correlations between the gas- and adsorbed-phase entropies persist for the larger and diverse set of adsorbate molecules studied here, proving a broader applicability and justifying the use of simple correlations for many adsorbates and, presumably, adsorbent materials.

Abstract
Recent investigations reported in the open literature concerning the functionalization of graphene as a support material for transition metal nanoparticle catalysts have examined isolated systems for their potential Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) activity. In this work we present results which characterize the ability to use functionalized graphene (via dopants B, N) to upshift and downshift the adsorption energy of mono-atomic oxygen, O* (the ORR activity descriptor on ORR Volcano Plots), for various compositions of 4-atom, 7-atom, and 19-atom sub-nanometer binary alloy/intermetallic transition metal nanoparticle catalysts on graphene (TMNP-MDG). Our results show several important and interesting features: (1) that the combination of geometric and electronic effects makes development of simple linear mixing rules for size/composition difficult; (2) that the transition from 4- to 7- to 19-atom TMNP on MDG has pronounced effects on ORR activity for all compositions; (3) that the use of B and N as dopants to modulate the graphene-TMNP electronic structure interaction can cause shifts in the oxygen adsorption energy of 0.5 eV or more; (4) that it might be possible to make specific doped-graphene-NixCuy TMNP systems which fall close to the Volcano Peak for ORR. Our results point to systems which should be investigated experimentally and may improve the viability of future fuel cell or other ORR applications, and provide new paths for future investigations of more detail for TMNP-MDG screening.

Abstract
Dispersion interactions are commonly included in density functional theory (DFT) calculations through the addition of an empirical correction. In this study, a modification is made to the damping function in DFT-D2 calculations to describe repulsion at small internuclear distances. The resulting Atomic Interactions Represented By Empirical Dispersion (AIRBED) approach is used to model the physisorption of molecules on surfaces such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride, where the constituent atoms of the surface are no longer required to be included explicitly in the density functional theory calculation but are represented by a point charge to capture electrostatic effects. It is shown that this model can reproduce the structures predicted by full DFT-D2 calculations to a high degree of accuracy. The significant reduction in computational cost allows much larger systems to be studied, including molecular arrays on surfaces and sandwich complexes involving organic molecules between two surface layers.

Abstract
Superconductivity in polycrystalline and thin-film MgB2 is strongly affected by the termination of its surface, but a reliable determination of the surface termination is still a challenging task of surface chemistry. Here, the surface properties of superconducting MgB2 were investigated using a combination of inverse gas chromatography and van der Waals corrected density functional theory calculations. The dispersive surface energy was measured as a function of the surface coverage and its value (58 mJ m-2 to 48 mJ m-2) was verified by high-level non-local EXX + RPA calculations, which predicted that the dispersive contribution to the cleavage energy was 56 mJ m-2. The isosteric adsorption enthalpies of cyclohexane, dioxane, acetone and acetonitrile molecules were measured on an MgB2 sample and compared to the DFT calculated enthalpies for the Mg-terminated MgB2, B-terminated MgB2 and MgO(001) surfaces. The close agreement between theory and experiment for the Mg-terminated surface suggested that the magnesium termination is the dominant surface phase of MgB2. Thus, combining inverse gas chromatography experiments with theoretical calculations may provide information about the surface termination.

Abstract
Pushing the boundaries of the investigation of hydrophobic attraction (HA) to the molecular scale readily ensures the collection of experimental results free of secondary effects, thereby facilitating the unraveling of the underlying mechanism by providing clean experimental results that truly reflect the hydrophobic attraction. Regardless of the feasibility of this approach, investigations using this promising method are stagnant due to the difficulties in determining the individual contributions of HA and van der Waals (vdW) interactions at the molecular scale. Here, a novel approach was proposed for the first time to determine the individual contributions of vdW interactions and HA by studying the single-molecule adhesion forces of a neutral oligo ethylene glycol methacrylate copolymer on a MoS2 crystal exposed to different water chemistry. The anisotropic surface properties of MoS2 enabled the partitioning of vdW interactions and hydrophobic attraction in total single-molecule adhesion forces and also enabled determining the contribution of electrostatic interaction (ESI). When the presence of ESI is excluded, the study of single-molecule adhesion forces using single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) revealed that the contribution of vdW interactions to total molecular interactions was smaller than 9 pN. The strong single-molecule adhesion forces of oligo ethylene glycol copolymer on the hydrophobic basal surface of MoS2 demonstrated that HA plays a dominant role with contribution up to 89% to the total single-molecule adhesion force. By utilizing the derived theoretical model, we quantified the individual contribution of each fundamental interaction under a variety of conditions. This study proposed a facile approach to quantitatively clarify the roles of vdW interactions and HA at the molecular scale, which may help assist future experimental and theoretical investigations of hydrophobic (solvophobic) effects and vdW interactions in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
We have explored the theoretical applicability of adsorption on graphene for the isotopic enrichment of aromatic compounds. Our results indicate that for nonpolar molecules, like benzene, the model compound used in these studies shows a reasonable isotopic fractionation that is obtained only for the deuterated species. For heavier elements, isotopic enrichment might be possible with more polar compounds, e.g., nitro- or chloro-substituted aromatics. For benzene, it is also not possible to use isotopic fractionation to differentiate between different orientations of the adsorbed molecule over the graphene surface. Our results also allowed for the identification of theory levels and computational procedures that can be used for the reliable prediction of the isotope effects on adsorption on graphene. In particular, the use of partial Hessian is an attractive approach that yields acceptable values at an enormous increase of speed.

Abstract
Nanomaterials have a high surface-to-mass ratio and their surface properties significantly affect their features and application potential. Phosphorene, a single layer of black phosphorus (BP), was the first homoatomic two-dimensional material to be prepared after the discovery of graphene. The structure of phosphorene resembles the honeycomb arrangement of graphene, but its layers are buckled and highly anisotropic. We studied how this difference affects the surface properties of BP, namely the free surface energy and adsorption affinity of various organic molecules. Using inverse gas chromatography, we measured the total surface free energy of BP powder to be 90 mJ m-2 and showed that it was dominantly determined by dispersion forces, but, unlike on graphene, with a notable contribution from specific acid-base interactions. We further measured adsorption enthalpies of volatile organic compounds on BP and rationalized them using density functional theory calculations. Polar molecules showed an increased affinity due to a significant contribution of dipole-dipole interactions to the molecule-surface bonding, because the buckled surface of BP causes higher diffusion barriers than those on graphene, hinders molecular in-plane motion and supports mutual orientation of molecular dipoles over longer distances, in contrast to graphene.

Abstract
Graphene pseudohalides are natural candidates for use in molecular sensing due to their greater chemical activity as compared to both graphene halides and pristine graphene. Though their study is still in its infancy, being hindered until recently by the unavailability of both selective and efficient procedures for their synthesis, they promise to considerably widen the application potential of chemically modified graphenes. Herein, we employ van der Waals density functional theory to study the structural and electronic properties of two selected graphene pseudohalides, namely, cyanographone and isocyanographone and investigate the potential use of the latter as a chemical sensor via electron transport calculations.

Abstract
Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are at the forefront of materials research. One of the most important applications of these materials is their electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution, and these materials are suggested to replace scarce platinum. Whilst there are significant efforts towards this goal, there are various reports of electrocatalysis of MoS2 (which is the most commonly tested TMD) with large variations of the reported electrocatalytic effect of the material, with overpotential varying by several hundreds of millivolts. Here, we analyzed surface properties of various bulk as well as single layer MoS2 samples using inverse gas chromatography. All samples displayed significant variations in surface energies and their heterogeneities. The surface energy ranged from 50 to 120 mJ m-2 depending on the sample and surface coverage. We correlated the surface properties and previously reported structural features of MoS2 with their electrochemical activities. We concluded that the observed differences in electrochemistry are caused by the surface properties. This is an important finding with an enormous impact on the whole field of electrocatalysis of layered materials.

Abstract
Fluorographene, formally a two-dimensional stoichiometric graphene derivative, attracted remarkable attention of the scientific community due to its extraordinary physical and chemical properties. We overview the strategies for the preparation of fluorinated graphene derivatives, based on top-down and bottom-up approaches. The physical and chemical properties of fluorographene, which is considered as one of the thinnest insulators with a wide electronic band gap, are presented. Special attention is paid to the rapidly developing chemistry of fluorographene, which was advanced in the last few years. The unusually high reactivity of fluorographene, which can be chemically considered perfluorinated hydrocarbon, enables facile and scalable access to a wide portfolio of graphene derivatives, such as graphene acid, cyanographene and allyl-graphene. Finally, we summarize the so far reported applications of fluorographene and fluorinated graphenes, spanning from sensing and bioimaging to separation, electronics and energy technologies.
