Behavior of the Enthalpy of Adsorption in Nanoporous Materials Close to Saturation Conditions

Adsorption of glyphosate and metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) from water by polymer-based spherical activated carbon (PBSAC)

Glyphosate (GLY) is the most commonly used herbicide worldwide, and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) is its main metabolite. Their occurrence in ground and surface waters causes diseases in humans, while complex physico-chemical properties hinder detection and effective removal. Polymer-based spherical activated carbon (PBSAC) can adsorb many micropollutants efficiently and, hence, overcome the shortfalls of conventional treatment methods. The static adsorption of a mixture of GLY and AMPA by PBSAC was investigated with varying PBSAC properties and relevant solution chemistry. The results show that PBSAC can remove 95% GLY and 57% AMPA from an initial concentration of 1 µg/L at pH 8.2. PBSAC properties (size, activation level, and surface charge) have a strong influence on herbicide removal, where surface area plays a key role. Low to neutral pH favors non-charge interactions and results in good adsorption, while higher temperatures equally enhance GLY/AMPA adsorption by PBSAC. The work demonstrated the effective removal of GLY to meet the European guideline concentration (0.1 µg/L), while AMPA could not be removed to the required level.

Closer Look at Adsorption of Sarin and Simulants on Metal-Organic Frameworks

The development of effective protection against exposure to chemical warfare agents (CWAs), such as sarin, relies on studies of its adsorption on the capturing materials and seeking candidates capable of adsorbing large amounts of sarin gas. Many metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for the effective capture and degradation of sarin and simulant substances. Among the simulants capable of mimicking thermodynamic properties of the agent, not all of them have been investigated on the ability to act similarly in the adsorption process, in particular, whether the agent and a simulant have similar mechanisms of binding to the MOF surface. Molecular simulation studies not only provide a safe way to investigate the aforementioned processes but can also help reveal the mechanisms of interactions between the adsorbents and the adsorbing compounds at the molecular level. We performed Monte Carlo simulations of the adsorption of sarin and three simulants, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), diisopropyl methylphosphonate (DIMP), and diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DIFP), on selected MOFs that have previously shown strong capabilities to adsorb sarin. On the basis of the calculated adsorption isotherms, enthalpy of adsorption, and radial distribution functions, we revealed common mechanisms among the particularly efficient adsorbents as well as the ability of simulants to mimic them. The findings can help in selecting a suitable simulant compound to study CWA adsorption on MOFs and guide further synthesis of efficient MOFs for the capture of organophosphorus compounds.

Airborne Toluene Detection Using Metal-Organic Frameworks

The pollution of indoor air is a major worldwide concern in our modern society for people's comfort, health, and safety. In particular, toluene, present in many substances including paints, thinners, candles, leathers, cosmetics, inks, and glues, affects the human health even at very low concentrations throughout its action on the central nervous system. Its prevalence in many workplace environments can fluctuate considerably, which led to firm regulation with exposure limits varying between 50 and 400 ppm depending on exposure time. This therefore requires the development of technologies for an accurate detection of this contaminant. Metal-organic frameworks have been proposed as promising candidates to detect and monitor a series of molecules at even extremely low concentrations owing to the high tunability of their functionality. Herein, a high-throughput Monte Carlo screening approach was devised to identify the best MOFs from the computation-ready, experimental (CoRE) metal-organic framework (MOF) density-derived electrostatic and chemical (DDEC) database for the selective capture of toluene from air at room temperature, with the consideration of a ternary mixture composed of extremely low-level concentration of toluene (10 ppm) in oxygen and nitrogen to mimic the composition of air. An aluminum MOF, DUT-4, with channel-like micropores was identified as an excellent candidate for the selective adsorption of toluene from air with a predicted adsorption uptake of 0.5 g/g at 10 ppm concentration and room temperature. The toluene adsorption behavior of DUT-4 at low equivalent concentrations, alongside its sensing performance, was further experimentally investigated by its incorporation in a quartz crystal microbalance sensor, confirming the promises of DUT-4. Decisively, the resulting high sensitivity and fast kinetics of our developed sensor highlight the applicability of this hand-in-hand computational-experimental methodology to porous material screening for sensing applications.

Insights into Sorption and Molecular Transport of Aqueous Glucose into Zeolite Nanopores

Liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis using zeolites is important for biomass conversion to fuels and chemicals. There is a substantial body of work on gas-phase sorption in zeolites with different topologies; however, studies investigating the diffusion of complex molecules in liquid medium into zeolitic nanopores are scarce. Here, we present a molecular dynamics study to understand the sorption and diffusion of aqueous β-d-glucose into β-zeolite silicate at T = 395 K and P = 1 bar. Through 2-μs-long molecular dynamics trajectories, we reveal the role of the solvent, the kinetics of the pore filling, and the effect of the water model on these properties. We find that the glucose and water loading is a function of the initial glucose concentration. Although the glucose concentration increases monotonically with the initial glucose concentration, the water loading exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior. At the highest initial concentration (∼20 wt %), we find that the equilibrium loading of glucose is approximately five molecules per unit cell and displays a weak dependence on the water model. Glucose molecules follow a single-file diffusion in the nanopores due to confinement. The dynamics of glucose and water molecules slows significantly at the interface. The average residence time for glucose molecules is an order of magnitude larger than that in the bulk solution, while it is about twice as large for the water molecules. Our simulations reveal critical molecular details of the glucose molecule's local environment inside the zeolite pore relevant to catalytic conversion of biomass to valuable chemicals.

ZrBDC-Based Functional Adsorbents for Small-Scale Methane Storage Systems

Metal-organic frameworks (MOF), potentially porous coordination structures, are envisioned for adsorption-based natural gas (ANG) storage, including mobile applications. The factors affecting the performance of the ANG system with a zirconium-based MOF with benzene dicarboxylic acid as a linker (ZrBDC) as an adsorbent were considered: textural properties of the adsorbent and thermal effect arising upon adsorption. The high-density ZrBDC-based pellets were prepared by mechanical compaction of the as-synthesized MOF powder at different pressures from 30 to 240 MPa at 298 K without a binder and mixed with polymer binders: polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxyl methylcellulose (CMC). The structural investigations revealed that the compaction of ZrBDC with PVA under 30 MPa was optimal to produce the ZrBDC-PVA adsorbent with more than a twofold increase in the packing density and the lowest degradation of the porous structure. The specific total and deliverable volumetric methane storage capacities of the ZrBDC-based adsorbents were evaluated from the experimental data on methane adsorption measured up to 10 MPa and within a temperature range from 253 to 333 K. It was measured experimentally that at 253 K, an 100 mL adsorption tank loaded with the ZrBDC-PVA pellets exhibited the deliverable methane storage capacity of 172 m3(NTP)/m3 when the pressure dropped from 10 to 0.1 MPa. The methane adsorption data for the ZrBDC powder and ZrBDC-PVA pellets were used to calculate the important thermodynamic characteristic of the ZrBDC/CH4 adsorption system—the differential molar isosteric heat of adsorption, which was used to evaluate the state thermodynamic functions: entropy, enthalpy, and heat capacity. The initial heats of methane adsorption in powdered ZrBDC evaluated from the experimental adsorption isosteres were found to be ~19.3 kJ/mol, and then these values in the ZrBDC/CH4 system decreased at different rates during adsorption. In contrast, the heat of methane adsorption onto the ZrBDC-PVA pellets increased from 19.4 kJ/mol to a maximum with a magnitude, width, and position depended on temperature, and then it fell. The behaviors of the thermodynamic state functions of the ZrBDC/CH4 adsorption system were interpreted as a variation in the state of adsorbed molecules determined by a ratio of CH4-CH4 and CH4-ZrBDC interactions. The heat of adsorption was used to calculate the temperature changes of the ANG systems loaded with ZrBDC powder and ZrBDC pellets during methane adsorption under adiabatic conditions; the maximum integrated heat of adsorption was found at 273 K. The maximum temperature changes of the ANG system with the ZrBDC materials during the adsorption (charging) process did not exceed 14 K that are much lower than those reported for the systems loaded with activated carbons. The results obtained are of direct relevance for designing the adsorption-based methane storage systems for the automotive industry, developing new gas-power robotics systems and uncrewed aerial vehicles.

Performance-Based Screening of Porous Materials for Carbon Capture

Computational screening methods have changed the way new materials and processes are discovered and designed. For adsorption-based gas separations and carbon capture, recent efforts have been directed toward the development of multiscale and performance-based screening workflows where we can go from the atomistic structure of an adsorbent to its equilibrium and transport properties at different scales, and eventually to its separation performance at the process level. The objective of this work is to review the current status of this new approach, discuss its potential and impact on the field of materials screening, and highlight the challenges that limit its application. We compile and introduce all the elements required for the development, implementation, and operation of multiscale workflows, hence providing a useful practical guide and a comprehensive source of reference to the scientific communities who work in this area. Our review includes information about available materials databases, state-of-the-art molecular simulation and process modeling tools, and a complete catalogue of data and parameters that are required at each stage of the multiscale screening. We thoroughly discuss the challenges associated with data availability, consistency of the models, and reproducibility of the data and, finally, propose new directions for the future of the field.

Statistical Mechanical Model of Gas Adsorption in a Metal-Organic Framework Harboring a Rotaxane Molecular Shuttle

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are modular and tunable nanoporous materials with applications in gas storage, separations, and sensing. Integrating flexible/dynamic, gas-responsive components into MOFs can give them unique or enhanced adsorption properties. Here, we explore the adsorption properties that could be imparted to a MOF by a rotaxane molecular shuttle (RMS) in its pores. In the unit cell of an RMS-MOF, a macrocyclic wheel is mechanically interlocked with a strut of the MOF scaffold. The wheel shuttles between stations on the strut that are also gas adsorption sites. At a level of abstraction similar to the seminal Langmuir adsorption model, we pose and analyze a simple statistical mechanical model of gas adsorption in an RMS-MOF that accounts for (i) wheel/gas competition for sites on the strut and (ii) gas-induced changes in the configurational entropy of the shuttling wheel. We determine how the amount of gas adsorbed, the position of the wheel, and the differential energy of adsorption depend on temperature, pressure, and the interactions of the gas and wheel with the stations on the strut. Our model reveals that, compared to a rigid, Langmuir material, the chemistry of the RMS-MOF can be tuned to render gas adsorption more or less temperature sensitive and to release more or less heat upon adsorption. The model also uncovers that, if gas-wheel competition for a station is fierce, temperature influences the position of the wheel differently depending on the amount of gas adsorbed.

Thermodynamics of Adsorbed Methane Storage Systems Based on Peat-Derived Activated Carbons

Two activated carbons (ACs) were prepared from peat using thermochemical K2SO4 activation at 1053-1133 K for 1h, and steam activation at 1173K for 30 (AC-4) and 45 (AC-6) min. The steam activation duration affected the microporous structure and chemical composition of ACs, which are crucial for their adsorption performance in the methane storage technique. AC-6 displays a higher micropore volume (0.60 cm3/g), specific BET surface (1334 m2/g), and a lower fraction of mesopores calculated from the benzene vapor adsorption/desorption isotherms at 293K. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) investigations of ACs revealed their heterogeneous morphology and chemical composition determined by the precursor and activation conditions. A thermodynamic analysis of methane adsorption at pressures up to 25 MPa and temperatures from 178 to 360K extended to impacts of the nonideality of a gaseous phase and non-inertness of an adsorbent made it possible to evaluate the heat effects and thermodynamic state functions in the methane-AC adsorption systems. At 270 K and methane adsorption value of ~8 mmol/g, the isosteric heat capacity of the methane-AC-4 system exceeded by ~45% that evaluated for the methane-AC-6 system. The higher micropore volume and structural heterogeneity of the more activated AC-6 compared to AC-4 determine its superior methane adsorption performance.

Simulation of the Adsorption and Release of Large Drugs by ZIF-8

The adsorption and release of two drugs 5FU (5-fluorouracil) and CAF (caffeine) into and from the ZIF-8 framework were simulated by the Gibbs-ensemble Monte Carlo approach employing two models for representing the sorbent: one without surface (ZIF-8P) and another with surface (ZIF-8S). The inner pores of ZIF-8S were inaccessible to the drugs, but accessible to the solvents (methanol or water). The ZIF-8P model is not recommended to describe the actual sorption processes because it lacks surface and solvent effects, which are reflected in the poor quantitative agreement with experimental results. The ZIF-8S model yielded results for the sorption of CAF in very close agreement with the experimental loading from methanol solution and release of the drug into water. For 5FU, the computer simulations provided qualitative agreements, which suggests that the sorbent-5FU interaction potentials should be improved. The excellent performance of the ZIF-8S model is due to its adequate description of the surface and by exposing adsorption sites such as undercoordinated zinc ions to interactions with large molecules. This was achieved by applying periodic conditions to a ZIF-8 nanocrystal, instead of an elementary cell, which is easy to generalize and used to describe several surface defects. Furthermore, the combination of this ZIF-8S model with the Monte Carlo method provides a very simple and efficient approach to simulate the inaccessibility of the ZIF-8 inner porosity to large molecules. Namely, any trial moves that inserted the drug within the pore were disregarded. This is a quite simple and general approach that can be promptly applied to a large number of MOF sorbents and of drugs that cannot access the inner pores.

Photons Probe Entropic Potential Variation during Molecular Confinement in Nanocavities

In thin polymeric layers, external molecular analytes may well be confined within tiny surface nano/microcavities, or they may be attached to ligand adhesion binding sites via electrical dipole forces. Even though molecular trapping is followed by a variation of the entropic potential, the experimental evidence of entropic energy variation from molecular confinement is scarce because tiny thermodynamic energy density diverseness can be tracked only by sub-nm surface strain. Here, it is shown that water confinement within photon-induced nanocavities in Poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), (PHEMA) layers could be trailed by an entropic potential variation that competes with a thermodynamic potential from electric dipole attachment of molecular adsorbates in polymeric ligands. The nano/microcavities and the ligands were fabricated on a PHEMA matrix by vacuum ultraviolet laser photons at 157 nm. The entropic energy variation during confinement of water analytes on the photon processed PHEMA layer was monitored via sub-nm surface strain by applying white light reflectance spectroscopy, nanoindentation, contact angle measurements, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) imaging, and surface and fractal analysis. The methodology has the potency to identify entropic energy density variations less than 1 pJm⁻³ and to monitor dipole and entropic fields on biosurfaces.

Efficient Application of Continuous Fractional Component Monte Carlo in the Reaction Ensemble

A new formulation of the Reaction Ensemble Monte Carlo technique (RxMC) combined with the Continuous Fractional Component Monte Carlo method is presented. This method is denoted by serial Rx/CFC. The key ingredient is that fractional molecules of either reactants or reaction products are present and that chemical reactions always involve fractional molecules. Serial Rx/CFC has the following advantages compared to other approaches: (1) One directly obtains chemical potentials of all reactants and reaction products. Obtained chemical potentials can be used directly as an independent check to ensure that chemical equilibrium is achieved. (2) Independent biasing is applied to the fractional molecules of reactants and reaction products. Therefore, the efficiency of the algorithm is significantly increased, compared to the other approaches. (3) Changes in the maximum scaling parameter of intermolecular interactions can be chosen differently for reactants and reaction products. (4) The number of fractional molecules is reduced. As a proof of principle, our method is tested for Lennard-Jones systems at various pressures and for various chemical reactions. Excellent agreement was found both for average densities and equilibrium mixture compositions computed using serial Rx/CFC, RxMC/CFCMC previously introduced by Rosch and Maginn (Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation, 2011, 7, 269-279), and the conventional RxMC approach. The serial Rx/CFC approach is also tested for the reaction of ammonia synthesis at various temperatures and pressures. Excellent agreement was found between results obtained from serial Rx/CFC, experimental results from literature, and thermodynamic modeling using the Peng-Robinson equation of state. The efficiency of reaction trial moves is improved by a factor of 2 to 3 (depending on the system) compared to the RxMC/CFCMC formulation by Rosch and Maginn.
